Charming 17th-century timber-framed museum & tearoom with exhibits, paintings & folklore cures.
Good on Georgian and Victorian daily life as it was lived in Cambridge.
Good
Quirky volunteer run museum!
Interesting to learn more about Cambridge history.
Fabulous museum, intimate space reflects history of coaching inns. Crammed with curiosities to delight all ages. Toy room in attic perfect for kids.
The museum is free to enter, but you will need to book a time to enter or hope that theyve got slots available when you walk up. The museum currently has a temporary exhibit for Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei, which includes some documentaries with a run time of about 1hr 45mins. I found the museum small but well curated and thought provoking, and worth a visit.
Such a treat to stumble into, I only wish I had more time! Its an amazing collection of local curiosities, housed in an authentic 17th pub building. It tells the local narrative of Cambridge, and a breath of fresh air from the university story. Volunteer David was a true wealth of information and enthusiasm
Very interesting museum, where you can get to know the way of life of Cambridge past times.
A really interesting collection of all sorts, fascinating stories about Cambridge and a v informative guy on the front desk. Highly recommended
very friendly staff, quite small, ideal for something to do if passing by
What a charming little place. Well worth a visit just for the charming staff who were both knowledgeable and helpful.
I only went because my wife wanted to. But I was pleasantly surprised how interesting and varied it was . Quite small so its not overwhelming. I would like to borrow their mechanical apple corer. Combine with this Museum with a visit to the adjacent Kettles Yard
It would be easy to pass this place by in all the splendor of Cambridge but to miss it would be a shame. Its a traditional folk museum focused on Cambridge life and history (and the Fensbut not on the university. Its in a very ancient building (17th Centurythat used to be an Inn and has narrow wooden steps and small rooms with low ceilings and wooden beams so you feel like you are exploring the history of the place as you go around. The exhibits are curios and objects from the past and its packed with interesting things. You could spend a long time in there if you wanted to. They are well labelled mostly and varied. Highly recommended.
Very small and not worth £6 to get in. Its full of old stuff but theres nothing of any real interest. Its just rooms full of things, theres no connection to cambridge, you can see items like these in any museum or even in some pubs !! My advice is spend your £6 somewhere else.
Fine collection of historical artifacts and trivial. It couldve been a lot bigger. It felt a lot more like someones private collection than a musium.
Small and limited but all museums are good so still worthwhile to visit.
So interesting items and the building itself has a lot of history.
Pretty small and expensive for what it is, just a house but some interesting facts. You get a ticket which allows you to return however youll be able to see everything in one visit in no time.
Small local museum in an old pub - plenty of interest for children and adults alike
Lots of items from Cambridges past. Arranged a little haphazardly, but interesting things if you spend tome looking. Tge section in the Fens is very informative.
Shows the character of the place. Quaint.
My best place in Cambridge, very interest things! I go every month!
Full of interesting things and settings within the old pub building. Really fascinating and down to earth on a scale thats accessible to adults and children. I recommend it to anyone who is curious about life in past times. Its next door to Kettles Yard so you can enjoy both. Entry fee (which is very modestallows for return visits in the 12 months following your first one.
Worth a visit and the 5£. The 3-story building itself is a piece of history. Very cool displays & items Ive never seen nor heard of.Really liked the mayors chair, the spit jack, and the massive punt guns.Staff were exceptionally friendly.
Amazing place. Some really old gadgets that I thought were invented about 50 years ago but no, we had them for around 100 years. Not to mention some of the old creepy dolls in the glass, now thats something you only see in Annabelle films.Really nice staff, made my day today. If you like museums, you must visit this one in Cambridge, its just amazing. So many well preserved housing stuff from more than 100 years ago, just great. Glad I could visit today. Also, if you pay contact-less, be prepared to wait couple of minutes because their contact-less machine plays up at times because of the bad network down there, anyway its worth it.
Very interesting and enjoyable. Great insight into Cambridge of the past. Well worth a visit.
So many hidden treasures, well worth popping in, or even check whats on as they do alot of special events.
A gorgeous little independent museum amongst the University funded headliners.
Cute little museum well worth an hour of anyones time when visiting cambridge. Certainly get a feel for what an inn would have been like back in the day. Please support our heritage!
Six pound charge to see household items from the last 100 years. Save your money and go to a yard sale.
Really interesting place to visit with very knowledgeable staff. Would highly recommend a visit.
Was not as good as I expected. Felt like it was more "here are old things they used in Cambridge" rather than a museum about old Cambridge.
Small but interesting museum that gives a good overview of the history of the surrounding area and university.
Really good museum to visit. Generally when my kids go to museums its a look round then leave but after 2 hours they didnt want to leave. I would highly recommend this museum. The lady in the gift shop was extremely helpful. Only gripe I have is thebprice to get in. If a child is over 12 they have to pay adult price. I would change that to 16 years old. All of my 4 children loved it. Apart from kids price it is well worth it.
Small, but spent a lovely 3 hours in a visit. Might be a bit awkward with a mobility scooter as its a bit cramped in places.
Quite a nice museum, I dont mind the 5£ admission.Very interesting information about the towns history.
Nice small interesting museum. Doesnt cost much and if you are local you can pay a little more for an annual card. Nice place to spend an hour and my 6 year old found it fascinating.
As a historian, local museums never fails to intrigue me. Unlike other museums in town, which relate more to the University, this museum is about the town itself. I like the exhibition showcasing the life ordinary Cambridge residents lived throughout the past 300 years. The museum, including the building, the items on display and even the smell, make the history alive. You would learn a lot about the historical development of Cambridge shaped by its unique geographical features - the fens and the interaction between the gown and the town. But I agree with some other local guides that the ticket (£5 for adultsis pricey. Given the size and the niche focus of the museum, it is quite hard to compete with many other free museums in town. I think it might be a better strategy to make the access free, attract more visitors and get funded from donation and selling souvenirs.
Excellent secret location my grandchildren loved it especially the play room
Great for a quick stop. You learn alot from one visit. Only down side is that its a bit small and its not free to get in. Overall good place.
I loved this place, it was like going back in time! Very informative museum displaying all sorts. Highly recommend.
A most interesting visit, well recommended, worth the £4 fee. Also home of a most beautiful painting by Ward, a view of Cambridge a very long time ago.
Some good old artefacts here. Bit pricey for what it is though. (£4 per adult). Tea room only open at weekends!
Lovely little museum with some interactive displays
Very cute, modest, little museum at a modest price. Plenty of well curated artifacts to keep you entertained for about an hour to an hour and a half. Stop in as you meander through Cambridge!
Fantastic range of exhibits giving an insight into daily life in Cambridge over the last couple of centuries
Small museum in a historical house. Loved the Twilight night candle making activity. The staff is very dedicated and caring.
I was there on my own today.I must say,I really enjoyed the it.The man Tom in the shop was very friendly, and very helpful. The museum was full of local artifacts, and there was also audio information. Ill be back next time Im in Cambridge.
If you have a couple of hours to spent in Cambridge it could be worth the 4£ of the admission ticket.Nothing special but still you can find some interesting old stuff. Its basically a collection of tools and amenities used in daily life activities from the former owner of the house.
Wonderful place to visit if youre in Cambridge. So many great things to see and all in such a lovely environment. The staff couldnt do enough to accommodate us and there were lots of things to keep the children amused. If you visit on Saturday or school holidays you will be able to visit the tearoom for some fantastic tea and super yummy cakes. Theres even a lift so the whole place is easily accessible.
