Heinrich-Böll-Platz, 50667 Köln, Germany, Langenfeld
The formerly private collection of Peter Ludwig, with paintings, ceramics, sketches & prints.
A nice surprise of a museum in Cologne. Great collection of various modern art pieces well worth a visit. Three floors of art in a great space next to the Cathedral. Consider a museum pass if you plan to visit here and another couple museums.
Very nice museum. Worth a visit.
Great selection of modern western art.Friendly staff, and thanks to the lay out the outdoor light adds colour to the works, so my advice is to visit before dusk.
It is worth a visit. Everytime occurs an interesting event or a gathering of art pieces. A small shop also available for buying some gifts or informative stuffs. There is also locker place for keeping valuable things inside. The staff are welcoming and kind. Access from both side of the building is possible.
I’m not sure what happened to this place, but it was terrible. The staff was polite and friendly but the actual exhibits were terrible. They had a bunch of art from socialist and climate leaders, which is fine, if they have good art than cool. But the exhibits weren’t about the art, not really, it was about pushing specific political agendas and most of the art was mediocre at best.It once had Van Gogh and War-hall, now it has nonsense. It’s very sad to see the intense decline of this once wonderful place. If they bring back Van Gogh or Monet I’ll be happy to return.
You can purchase ticket at the entrance. No queue. Interesting exhibitions. Highlight is definitely Picasso.
Great museum, overall a nice collection, but the temporary plant exhibition wasnt as good as expected
Amazing modern collection. Also, huge shout out for being the only fine art museum we visited in Germany that addressed the colonial and problematic tendencies within the museum world while also giving voice to those often under represented in the fine art world.
Excellent modern art collection in great architecture. We liked the cafe as well, it’s possible to have a drink and hop back into your visit. Terraces are great to catch a view over the dome and get some fresh air. Basement has changing collection. All together great place for a 3-4 hour visit, highly recommend.
Giant white painted exhibition space. There were a lot of guards everywhere, and alarms going off when people crossed the black painted lines by mistake.A great place as long as you follow the rules.Watch it for the 2EUR locker charge. They dont tell you about that one in advance.
We visit a different floor each time we come to Cologne. The current show, showcases the museums relationship to the environment, including unusual plant art.
Great museum with amazing pop art exhibitions
Great variety of artwork and an interesting exhibition on plants. Dont think I will ever understand certain types of modern art or pop art though...
Wide ranging collection of modern art, equivalent to Tate Modern or similar in terms of size.Could have had an accessible plan available. Also shop was more of a bookshop and gift section was comparatively small but these were minor quibbles.
The museum Ludwig offers an exquisite selection of fine art from the 20th century. Spectacular art pieces and paintings from Roy Liechtenstein, Pablo Picasso, Bacon, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol, Dali etc. If you like modern art this museum is a must. It’s worth wile. Highly recommended.
Awesome collection of modern art - a range of mediums, genres, and eras. A neat collection of Picassos work but really just about everything here was worth admiration. Not a stuffy as more traditional galleries in Europe!Worth probably 2-3 hours at least!
Pretty art museum, with a lot to offer.
My place to connect with myself through art .I recommend top floor first, save your brain to surrealism and enjoy.
Honestly? Great location with views of the hustle and bustle of the city nearby. Exceptional artwork, too. But relatively small. And above all, outdated ways of presenting the work. There are many galleries in the Ruhrgebiet region that surpass Cologne in quality many times over. I divide the galleries into those I want to visit again. And those that you really only need to see (at mostonce. Where to put the Museum Ludwig? 😔🤔
It was really interesting. A lot of Picassos work which was great. There is a really cute rooftop balcony! I recommend coming on week days.
Very interesting building design inside. Worth visitingGood art collection.
Stunning collection and presentation of the major art works of 20th and 21st century. Also, great activities for kids, especially in the Pop Lab! Thank you
Our visit to this excellent art museum was tie well spent. We are normally happier spending many hours going round galleries of old masters, so I was astonished to find so much of interest in the modern art collection of the Ludwig Museum. Many excellent objects were very well-presented. In addition, we were delighted by the special exhibition of the work of Isamu Noguchi, which contained some most extraordinary images and items.
Wonderful collection. Mecca for modern art lovers. Photos of the art probably infringe on copy rights.
One of Cologne’s gems for sure! Loved everything about my visit at the museum. I was also pleasantly surprised by the Naguchi exhibition that we managed to explore. I felt truly moved by his art. 💫
A fabulous collection if modern & contemporary art, surreal, unique.
One of my favourite museums in Cologne. It has great art, an interesting way of presenting it and nice projects.Ive been there multiple times and I think its absolutely worth it.
I really enjoyed this gallery. Make sure you allow 2-3 hours as the gallery is quite large.
I love this museum of modern art! Great collection of Picasso, really cool Pop-art part, you can find also Rothko, Kandinsky, Dali, Malevich, Otto Dix, Warhol and many others. You need at least 3-4 hours to see all. There is free admission every first Thursday of the month for those who is registered in Cologne (Anmeldung required)
great locations and lots of art. that’s the point of a museum but they really did a great job.
Really nice place to walk around. One of the paintings was just the bluest blue Ive ever seen.
Great Picasso exhebition with great insights. Also always great the permanent exhebition with really all the big names.
Although I’m not a huge fan of modern art, I enjoyed this place so much. A lot of themes you can enjoy, especially I loved the “In Situ” temporary exhibition!
Quite a fun and interesting museum. It has a rather large Picasso section, along with inherent rotating collections. When we visited they had a photography exhibit for migrations, specially the Turkish migrants. A wonderful museum to visit when in Köln and a must when visiting. Takes at least 1.5 hours to do a quick walk through, more if you really want to digest everything.
Since 1994 the Friends of the Museum Ludwig have honoured each year an international artist with the ‘Wolfgang Hahn Prize’, presented during the citys art fair Art Cologne. Both the annual highlight of the Friends activities and one of the cultural features of Cologne and the Rhineland, this purchase prize is dedicated to the memory of Wolfgang Hahn 1924–1987 chief conservator and painting restorer at Wallraf Richartz Museum / Museum Ludwig and one of Colognes most far-sighted collectors. The budget for the prize amounts to a maximum of 100,000 euros per annum. The museum also acquires a work from each prizewinner. The building is also home to the Kölner Philharmonic. The Heinrich-Böll-Platz, a public square designed by Dani Karavan, is above the concert hall at the north-east of the building. Unfortunately, during concerts people cant walk upon the square as it creates acoustic disturbances for the concert goers below. In 2016 the museum joined forces with the Bell Art Center to organize an unofficial retrospective of Anselm Kiefer, which opened at Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts. The last stop on the tour in China was to be the new Jupiter Museum of Art in Shenzhen, but a delayed museum opening caused the works to be put into storage. At this point the museum lost track of the pieces and began to search for them. In January 2020 they finally located the pieces in a warehouse in Shenzhen and attempted to retrieve the piece. They were stopped, however, by Chinese authorities. Diplomatic action has been undertaken by the German Government, the City of Koblenz, and Kiefer himself, to secure the return of the pieces, which include the monumental work Pasiphae.
Whenever you need to be in Cologne, then its absolutely worth visiting this museum. Nice collection and a large variety of great masters... from Picasso and Modigliani to Donald Judd to Gerhard Richter ... but also Rothko, Delaunay, Buren, Lewitt and not to forget a magnificent Dali ...
Nice art collection mix. Awesome spaces and beautiful architecture. The building is a work of art in itself. Good COVID precautions in place. Friendly and helpful staff. A must see if you’re into art.
Great museum with a lot of great pieces. We came for the Picasso’s but there is so much more to see here.
An amazing museum of a wide variety of art over 4 floors. It took us about 3 hours to walk around at a very leisurely pace.I would definitely come her again. There is a cafe/restaurant here, although we didnt go in. And a gift shop, full of a wide variety of books.
Is it in a museum because its art, or is it art because its in a museum? The only real art museum in Köln. Massive rooms bringing great painters/artists of all times. Definitely worth the visit. Polite staff, clean facilities & in the center of the city.
A great contemporary art museum that explores the many different art styles present throughout the 20th Century from expressionism to dadaism to surrealism to pop art. It also holds many Picasso pieces, which also include some of his sculptures and pottery as well! It is quite expansive and a very interesting museum to visit. Not to mention, there is an outside terrace that offers a beautiful view of the Cathedral
In general its a very nice museum but there are exhibitions there that I cannot see the point of presenting them (with all do respect). For me the interesting part was the Picasso / shagal and etc.. part as well as the Andy Warhol part...
Excellent collection, nicely displayed with easy access and uncrowded space to observe/admire the art of a wide variety of styles from Andy Warhol to Monet, Matisse, Picasso and Many others. Audio guides are available in German or English (for €3 + €10 deposit)Lockers are available but machine dispensing deposit tokens was out of order so a 2nd visit to Info/ticketing was required to pay/refund deposit of €1.
Museum is worth visiting because it guarantees that you will have a chance to experience and learn about different styles, their characteristics and artists who were creating in them. The most interesting moment for me was collection of creations made by Pablo Picasso. If you will want to see whole museum without need to rush... its better to plan whole day to spend it there (its worth it).On photos mostly views from the rooftop and windows of the museum.
Museum Ludwig, located in Cologne, Germany, houses a collection of modern art. It includes works from Pop Art, Abstract and Surrealism, and has one of the largest Picasso collections in Europe. It holds many works by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Im not crazy about the type of art presented but it was interesting to say the least.
Really good modern and contemporary art museum based on an amazing private collection. Well organized with lockers, restaurant, although the shop is too small.
Very modern and well designed. Coming into the lobby this placed looked like it was going to be empty. Once inside you really can admire the architecture of the building. The art is modern so some of it may not be enjoyable or appreciated by all but art is art. Great collection of Picasso’s on hand and some great other pieces scattered throughout. A definite must visit if in Cologne. 11€ admission seemed more than fair as well.
I can say it was the best modern art museum in Cologne to visit. It has a various number of pieces of art from different well-known artists like Picasso. Theres also a pop art unit which is showcasing advertisements which I personally found really interesting. In general I can say its a must-see in Cologne especially if youre interested in Modern Art.
Located next to the Cathedral, great collection of modern art. It includes works from Pop Art, Abstract and Surrealism, and has one of the largest Picasso collections in Europe. There are painting from Dali, Warhol, Mondrian and many others. If you have the chance, it is very nice place to visit :)
Pretty decent modern art museum. Has a good picasso collection. Not too crowded and the place is massive! Perhaps too many things to take in. Price of admission is a little steep. As an added bonus you can get great views of city from the museum.
