Museum St, York YO1 7FR, Mirfield
Large gardens surrounding Yorkshire Museum, with mature trees, Roman ruins and medieval abbey.
Lovely oasis of calm away from the busy shopping hustle and bustle. Good for a picnic or just to chill. Went back yesterday with the camera as its a magnet for squirrels and the like.
Nice garden to walk around, though I definitely wouldnt call it a botanical garden. More a park around the museum, with some ruins to have a wander around. There were lots of squirrels when we visited which were cute and fun to watch. The ruins are really nice to look at and interesting, however it would be nice if there were some information boards nearby with some of the history around them.
A beautiful place to join the citizens of York as they disport themselves on a sunny afternoon.I particularly enjoyed the ruins of the old church (St Maryswhere there is currently a display called Ghosts in the Garden (see pictures), which I really enjoyed.
Can you spot the ghosts in these pictures? 👻In this park, cleverly installed by artists are ghosts, which is in line with Yorks theme of being the most haunted city in the world. Haunted is a term most nonchalantly used here. I stick with the word serene. 🌸York Museum Gardens is located in the heart of York, just next to the River Ouse. The ruins in the pictures, St Marys Abbey, have lasted a millennium - since 1088.Truly, York is a quaint city filled with history and lore. 🏰
Relaxing place for a walk or to watch a million squirrels bounding around. The ghost sculptures is a great idea. It would have been nice to have a clue where they all were or how many we could find.
Well maintained park. I love the ghosts chicken wire statues.
Beautiful place. Great for a walk round and a great place to chill out. The museum is well worth a visit and the ruins of the Abbey very impressive. Currently hosting most of the #ghostsofyork and theyre great.
Nice compact but close garden walk. Feels much bigger than it is! Lovely old building remains hidden throughout!
I got to hold 3 owls! Which was very cool. The gardens are great. Very cool ruins and lots of nice flowers.
Lovely relaxing place with the excellent museum plenty to see very interesting well informative guides
Very quiet park with ruins. Good place to sit down and chill for a while. The edible and rock gardens are also nice to walk through
Great place to visit, located right in the center of York and completley free to enter. Plenty of historical points to see, paths to explore and places to just sit and relax. Great spot to have a picnic right next to the river as well.
A very lovely park. There are beautiful flowers and grass that is not afraid of people in the slightest. Quiet and peaceful.
Beautiful gardens. Great spot for a picnic.
Very pretty gardens, and a lovely place to walk. If you want to visit the museum, there is an admission charge. York is a place of great history, so there are lots of places you could visit, but, so often, there is a charge, so you may have to prioritise. Nevertheless, a walk in the museum gardens is free and well worth your time, very peaceful.
A peaceful place to take a stroll or picnic amongst the medieval ruins of St. Marys Abbey. The entrance is free. Rest here and be thankful. Also theres an opportunity to visit Yorkshires oldest working Observatory and award-winning Yorkshire Museum. Beautiful garden, indeed.
Really nice gardens, with birds of prey exhibitions. The museum is also really interesting. If it’s sunny enough a picnic is lovely in the gardens!
Loved it, took our toddler there for a picnic. Plenty of open spaces and lots of history as you would expect from the city. The weather was gorgeous and we walked back into the city centre by the river with an ice cream treat. Easily spent a couple of hours there.
Always beautiful here. Make sure you pop down to the river to get an ice cream from The Full Moo ice-cream boat too. Ive added a picture of my favourite tree.
Well maintained park, feels like you are far out in the country side, even though you are in the middle of a major city.
Absolutely stunning garden park, full of beauty, life and history. The ruins were amazing to look at and study.
A beautiful botanical garden that compliments the museum, you can see the ruined Abbey and the Hospitium and a few churches ⛪
A magical spot. Ive always loved the museum Gardens and have visited regularly since being a young girl with my parents. Now I love to bring my daughter. The ruins make for the perfect talking point. The gardens are beautifully maintained, they allow picnics and on warmer days theres always a bustle of atmosphere and its great to see a free area that is so popular, clean and pleasant. The birds of prey are great for kids and theres always lots of wildlife to spot too. Just a lovely way to soak up some sunshine, culture and spend the day!
Beautiful gardens and museum! You can even take a little stroll down to the river and you can find Moo York, the floating ice cream shop!
Beautiful..its where my late Father in law used to feed the squirrels.
Beautiful gardens and ruins to wander be and eat lunch ,,,,,bonus it was the yearly re enactment of the Roman Army and and march through York absolutely amazing day with the munchkins who got to dress up and see the amazing costumes and make flags,Roman vine leaf laurals, lots of stalls to show how they lived their lives
Stunning green space just a walk away from the city centre.. the Yorkshire museum within the grounds has a dinosaur display at the moment which our grandson loves.. one day hell allow us to explore more as the admission ticket allows free entry for a year.!! We had a lovely picnic on the extensive lawn area.. there are a couple of refreshment vans with tea, coffee and ices etc. on offer.. 👍
I absolutely love coming to these gardens and seeing the ruins of the past, especially the little plaques you see in the ground labeling where old buildings used to be.
Was a nice walk around the garden and its steeped in history
Beautiful gardens for rest and relaxation after a busy day exploring the city
Ive been to York many times over the years and this was the first time to the museum gardens, Im gutted to of only just discovered it. There is lots to see and on a clear sunny day the scenery is spectacular.
We climbed off Cliffords Tower, walked back to the entrance of the old city centre and walked into a beautiful suprise, the Museum Gardens. A beautiful garden with a mix of ruins, a cottage, a church, some Roman ruins, an observatory and ofcourse, lots of green and flowers. Well done that the city has made this an haven of peace and quiet. Bravo 👍🏻.
Beautiful and unique. It has ruins of some old castle or building which are preserved somewhat and and park itself awesome.
Lovely outdoor space - beautiful flower borders/pots - owl handling was a hit. Room to play catch, grab a coffee and have an icecream.
Really enjoyed the museum thank u national windows for the free pass a lovely place for what people did in the war I was astounded with the planes my mind was wow in a beautiful way but with respect to the place of remberance well worth a visit my only down fall was the cafe very disappointing the specials they had when I ordered was told that was yesterday specials then I asked about the special on sandwiches same reply yesterday so ordered sandwiches they were horrible to much salad and ordered coffee only very small coffee and the price was very dear moan over but was a enjoyable time paying our respects
Beautiful gardens very well maintained. The ruins of the abbey are well worth a visit. Plenty of benches and sun spots to enjoy some time here. The birds of prey charity were there and their donation suggestions for holding/flying are very reasonable. The flowers had just come out around the gardens and they were just stunning, you can see the gardeners put in a lot of time and effort
Nice part of York to stroll through a visit to the Yorkshire museum is a must just to see the Middleham jewel
Lovely place to spend some time reflecting on life and the world going by around you.Lovely spring flowers in a well maintained park within the city centre.
Really lovely setting, at this time of year the gardens are full of daffodils and there are plenty of birds and squirrels around. Great place to sit and have a coffee or lunch, very peaceful too.
Large, lush, beautiful park. Lots of seating available. Sit and watch the squirrels darting about. Very peaceful despite being so close to the main road.
What a lovely place to sit after walking around York! The riverside walks were closed due to recent flooding, but the park was still beautiful. I imagine it is fantastic when the trees are green again.
Beautiful park on the north side of the city centre. Attached to the museum which was closed on my visit (possibly due to nearby flooding).Lots of benches to sit on and wide open areas so you can avoid people if needed. There was a bird of prey display in the gardens which was really cool.
Really lovely place in the heart of the city. We only walked through to get back to our car but so glad we did, it was a really nice short walk and even when we took refuge from the rain under a tree the squirrels came down to say hello.
Been here a few times in the last few weeks. Really easy to get to, giving you a lovely park to walk around and visit some local history (with St. Leonard’s Hospital, Multangular Tower, York Observatory & St Mary’s Abbey in the gardens). This is definitely a place I’d like to visit in all the seasons to see the changes they make. There are a lot of cute squirrels around (hunting for food when I’ve been), as well as other wildlife/nature so I have been practicing with my camera.Plenty of room if your trying to social distance.
This is a very pretty area between the river and the Minster. It is very popular with both locals and tourists, and is often used as a venue for picnics and lunches. I went especially to photograph squirrels for an upcoming photographic exhibition, as there always seem to be plenty about, scurrying from tree to tree. Well worth a visit, but it can get very busy, as can the rest of the city
Great place to visit, nice garden and open space, many events happens regularly.
Always a joy to walk around even when I now visit as a tourist. Every season changes the place so its aways a little different. At the time it was set up for a spooky Halloween 👻
Beautiful gardens in the city centre. If you like to take pictures, this is a fantastic place where you can enjoy yourself.
Serene picturesque ground. Amazing ancient ruins with free local entertainment. Calm the n a busy city. Great for picnics over looking the Riverside.
Lovely gardens and walk with plenty of places to sit and relax.Very clean and pushchair friendly.Gardens are much bigger than they appear initially which was a nice surprise. We did not venture into the museum its self just the gardens. The river runs very close the the gardens which leads to nice views.
