Museum concentrating on the Dutch Christian experience with master paintings & modern artifacts.
We went to visit the (temporaryGospel exhibition. This exhibition has been carefully curated and shows tells the history of gospel. It focusses mainly on a few "heroes" of gospel, whose stories are told very thoroughly, but sometimes that takes away from the story high-over and makes that recent history is a bit more overlooked. The museum as a whole has a clear theme: it focusses on Christian art and history. There is so much to read, view and listen to (even the Gospel exhibition alone could take you hours). When visiting Catharijneconvent, make sure you take the time and decide on forehand what you want to see, as not to become overwhelmed. Its a good museum in their niche topic, but it is quite niche and signage and routing is not always very clear and many texts are quite small, so audience information could be a little more inclusive.
We grossly underestimated the size of the exhibitions. If you are planning on visiting, make sure you allow yourself a few hours to go through it. Although the pieces in their collection are exceptional this museum is definitely aimed at a specific audience.
Such a wonderful museum and fascinating information. We loved it. Well worth a visit.
Audio guide is provided but most of the content is in Dutch. It is a shame because you can see there is a lot of content in the museum as well
Some nice medieval codices. Theres little historical integrity left in the interior of the cloister. The special exhibit on the 1960s and Christianity was surprisingly good. Dont miss the short documentary on a nun who spent 5 years in the former Dutch New Guinea, 1955-1961. Free English language audio guide, but only of select items in the permanent collection.
Museum is great for lovers of christian art. You will learn a lot through out the 3 floors. They offer free audio guides in english. Not all of the displayed art has signs in english. When we visited the rooms were really cold so I wouldnt recommend wearing just a tank top. The staff was very very nice.
If you like Christian iconography from the middle ages this is the place for you! Beautiful, peaceful and serene.
Would highly recommend. Highlights for me were the unusual collection of wooden statues from c.13th to 15th century. Also the treasury with richly jewelled bibles and alter prices from 12th century onwards. Museum set in picturesque historic red brick building around a quiet courtyard with impressive adjoining church. Interesting galley about reforming the church from the 1960s onwards, on the upper floor.
Unfortunately most of the text accompanying the paintings, objects and monuments are not translated in English.
Not crowded.Beautiful and worth visiting.
Beautiful & historical location, found in the city center of Utrecht. We had lunch here which was very good, after we visited the museum. The pieces all revolve around Christianity, with some very nice pieces. The collection is a bit one sided but what they have is very well maintained. The top floor had an large exhibit revolving around the 60s which was sort of interesting, but a bit long. From the crowd probably only really interesting if you lived in that time. All in all well worth your money, for the location alone is worth the visit!
Lovely little museum, a bit confusingly organised but once you work out how to get around there are some absolutely fabulous paintings. Look out for the Catholic cats.
There were some cool pieces here. I was especially surprised by the treasure room and amount of old paintings. Was not a big fan of the more modern installations though. The building is beautiful but its too bad you cant see too much of it when youre walking around. If youre in the vicinity i would recommend visiting it, but not going out of your way.
I Basically paid 17 euros for a permanent exhibition presented in Dutch (only very few english, unlike what the lady at the entrante said)The collection is not worth it at allWould not recommand if not dutch native
I came here for a lecture i signed up forThe staff was very friendly, the food in the restaurant great and the lecture very informative. Also the museum is very educational..Definitely worth another visit..
Great new exhibit
Another world class exhibition in Medieval Bodies. Art and artifacts collected from all over Europe to tell the story of blood and milk, heads and the headless in a medieval religious context. I learnt a lot, and loved the design and curation.
Outstanding exhibitions! Could have spent many more hours!
One silent and humbly light place, within the heart of the lively and optimistic, beautiful city of Utrecht. The ancient monastry hosts - amongst a lot of further breathtaking iconic and precious works - the shining, eminent dome treasure - impressive, representative and partly slightly morbid pieces of art, as well as craft. The museums concept is rather subtle and profoundly demanding: Spiritually and historically vibrant phenomena are symbolised and materialised in (mostly historicalworks of art which have to be deciphered by the visitors themselves. The bare texts (more or less directly attached to the objects, and provided by the well done guide bookhave to be filled with spirit and meaning by us, the spectators. A contemplative place of atmosphere, vibrance and intellectual challenge. Encouraging a wider range of learners would possibly be a great idea. That is still done by the personnel (though not necessarily by the admittance fee).
Fantastic exposition about wonders, from Egyptian artifacts to David Bowie, lots of arts from 15-17 century, well made exhibition! Loved the modern art part and how it played with the historical art!
The spaces are beautiful, the collection historically beautiful. Occasionally a nice exposition...
If you are into medieval art and Christian artifacts this is the place to be. It has a nice permanent collection spanning from soms Rembrandt works to some very early Christian era statues. The fact that they have a permanent collection also means that there isnt that much variation a second time around if you would decide to visit it again in the near future. I think the treasure chamber was my favorite of the collection.
Friendly Check in. Free lockers. For people Who are interested in Christian art it is amazing. Should take hat least 2 hours for a thorough visit.
Great exhibitions. You can for one in an hour or two, or for several in a day. There is a nice balance between visuals, interaction and information.
A very surprising museum with a lot of exhibits. Especially the schatkamer, very attractive.
Fantastic insights into Dutch and European Christian history from the Middle Ages to modern times. The Reformation exhibits and the special exhibition on the Dutch "Bible Belt" were my favourites.
The museum surprised me in a positive way. We were here for a special tour with children, and it was very engaging. The tour guide was enthusiastic and had a great connection with the children while explaining things about the exhibition (about festivities)
Visited this museum several times over the years. Nice collection and friendly staff.
Went to the relics exhibition. Nicely setup and great on telling what worship is about. The museum is as a Total wonderful to visit. Situated in an historical building safeguarding several beautiful artifacts. Love visiting this museum multiple times a year.
This museum is always a great place to bring kids, but they are truly on top form during the school holidays. Offering an interesting range of activities including various arts and crafts means that several hours can be spent exploring here. There is also a nice cafe on site that offers a good menu of tasty food and hot and cold drinks. The staff are always polite and helpful.
Very interesting museum! Interesting artifacts, relics, paintings and religious items. Regardless of your religious inclinations, this is a worthwhile stop. The permanent exhibits are only described in Dutch, but the rotating exhibit (‘Relics’ - when I attendedhad great descriptions in English.
We were here for "de huis van sinterklaas". It was so well done. With real attention to detail. Incredible. The story teller even captivated the adults. If you plan to go make sure you reserve on time as it is sold out rather quickly. I cant say much about the museum itself. The cafe was lovely and all in all the 5 stars worth.
If you are into religious artefacts, the permanent exhibition is quite nice. I would however have liked some more guidance through the various types of artefacts displayed, something which was done very well in the temporary exhibition on relics. I also enjoyed the cafe a lot, very nice atmosphere.
Museum with a great collection of artifacts.
Extensive museum with a deep range of Christian artifacts and art that traces the Netherlands history in faith. Some remarkable and important artworks are peppered in with the very impressive collection of church artifacts. Possible to see much of it in 2-3 hours. If you dwell with the displays, it could take a whole day. Make sure to get the guidebook in English with your ticket--it covers, perhaps, 1 out of 5 works. Only some of the explanation cards are in English throughout the museum.
Nice museum with a good range of artifacts
For a foreigner the audioguide was essential- yet added v little useful info. The blurb said that understanding the history of Christianity in the Netherlands was key to understanding the country. However nothing linked the items on display to anything else let alone the countrys evolution. Only a very few items had the sound links and often the link numbers werent identifying themselves on the monitor. To cap it all upstairs closed without any warning. It promised a lot...loads of staff, but if you dont speak Dutch..would suggest you save your time and €14.Big disappointment..
Beautiful and relevant objects around Church history and history of Christianity in The Netherlands. I visited the Maarten Luther exhibit which was very well done and laid out. The objects contemporary with Luther brings you closer to this historical figure.
Museum of Religious History in the Lower Countries. Compact, world class collection of religious artifacts, paintings and statues.
This is a beautiful medium sized museum. Usually it will take 2-3 hours if you go into details a bit. It nicely illustrates the Christianity in Netherlands. Unfortunately ALL the labels are in Dutch without English translation! There is an English audio headset that you can borrow from the front desk but it only has very few items in English and does not include all the labels. Regardless, you can still enjoy the collection. I was there at the time of a temporary exhibition about Maarten Luther, there was no audio translation but a text book to follow the description, which was helpful.
Amazing collection of artifacts, all well displayed. Exhibits are labelled in Dutch only, so consider using the audio guide. We ran out of time in 90 minutes, there was so much to see. Will be back soon.
The museum has perhaps the largest collection of Liturgical implements in Northern Europe along with numerous Medieval and Renaissance artworks.Currently there is also a special Marian exhibit that runs to the end of August / first week in September 2017.The museum also has a small gift shop / bookstore and restaurant with indoor accommodations and terrace seating.
Catharijneconvent is a lovely museum. It has permanent collections on the history of Christianity, and shows great temporary exhibitions on current and interesting themes.
A nice place to see the history of Christianity in Netherlands. Interesting artifacts displayed. The treasury part is really worth a visit. Free for Museum card houlders
Quite a collection! A beautiful range of paintings in varied styles. Captures all the wealth of the church, so much gold and fine clothing!
Interesting place for those interested in religious artefacts, some great art and sculptures. Spent a good part of the morning wondering around the various displays, and found loads to interest me. Was well worth the visit
Great museum for art lovers. You dont expect to see such versatile collection in a former convent. Both main and temporary exhibitions are worth visiting.
Nice museum on the history of Christianity in the Netherlands. Especially the treasury houses multiple important artifacts. Must have some interest in the subject to appreciate museum.
Although theyre very well presented, the permanent collection works of art are the worse Ive ever seen, just some Van Scorel, illuminated books and medieval objects attracted my interest. In my opinion, this museum doesnt worth the visit, might be only interesting for its temporary exhibitions.
Museum Catharijneconvent is a very interesting museum with a unique collection of Christian art. The art is presented in such a way that it is interesting for a broad range of visitors. The museums vast collection shows in an attractive way how the Catholic church and the Protestant church had their influence on Dutch society. The collection includes some masterpieces like a Middle rhine altar piece and a medieval statue of St. Ursula. Also the museum has interesting temporary exhibitions. During our last visit we enjoyed the exhibition ontsnapt aan de beeldenstorm / surviving the Iconoclasm, this exhibition can be seen till the 24th of february 2013.
