Nice history and you find a lot about Portuguese exploration but its not for children and it has almost no interaction. Lot of reading and lots of miniature boats. Student ticket is around 3 euros

This was amazing. They have such a massive collection of artifacts, paintings, informational signs, models, clothes, etc. None of us were really big into boats but its just amazing and really well done. Way cheaper than it needs to be!

Well presented history of Portugals exploration of the world. Some questions remain: There were plenty of instruments on display but no explanation of how longitude was determined before chronometers were developed. There was no information I could see about a particular longitude agreed upon with Spain with the Vaticans aid to divide the world between the two countries. It would have been nice if there docents to answer questions. The cafeteria fed us well.

Cool place, but way too big! Yes, too big, at first you read everything, every ship, every king... Then you skip some "less important" things to you... And then there are 2 more rooms.... . All together its at least 3hrs trip, maybe 2hrs if you skip a lot of things.

A must for ship enthusiasts. Lots of detailed models, maps, military history, and antique ships. The first section is about Portugal’s growth as a naval power, and it’s very detailed (with good English translations— except that it almost completely sanitizes and ignores Portugal’s massive role as a colonial power and participant in the slave trade. A huge (and purposefuloversight. Also, Portugal wasn’t randomly and “suddenly” kicked out of Nagasaki, Japan. They were aggressively trying to spread Christianity, and had been warned to stop. :)Enjoy the exhibits, but remember that museums are not neutral.

This was a very fun museum covering 500 years of Portugals maritime exploration. Huge number of small and very large model ships, and some actual ones as well. Housed in a former monestery in the Belem area of Lisbon, not far from the Belem Tower. Definitely recommended.

Have visited this museum a few times, and its often overlooked among all of the museum options in Belém. It has a really nice collection of exhibits on the history of Portuguese navigation instruments and age of discovery. I recommend to anyone interested in sailing or 15-16th c. history... Or if youre just not interested in waiting in line for the monastery!

An amazing look into the history and culture of the area. I would strongly recommend it! There are place to sit and relax around the area with shade as well, so even if you don’t go inside, it’s a great place to rest, sit, and appreciate the beauty of the entire surrounding. It’s a quick walk to several major monuments in the area as well.

Already a very interesting experience. There is still potential in it and the view is very military based, which is a bit biased. I would have loved to learn more about the history of trade and the imported goods.

very oldschool museum. no multimedia installations, only models and rudimentary descriptions. mainly a museum of war without any thought about the cruelty of the Portuguese during the time of discoveries and fights. it is actually worth going only to the big hall at the end of the exhibition, where there are several original ships.

The Maritime Museum was on my way and as I had over an hour to the next ferry, I decided to pop in here. Enjoyed the visit, there are a lot of interesting things to look at (although not all objects have a description translated to English). I think it is rather a boyish place 😄 but it was nice to spend time there in my own girlish company 😁. It was great to learn more about the period of discoveries of new territories by Portugal and how the ship construction has been developing. The prices are more than generous - for a student I paid €3.25. And there was no queue on Thursday summer afternoon. The only suggestion is to have more interactive objects - for museums this is super important to be more entertaining and inclusive. For example some areas could be created where kids could crawl and try to turn the ship’s steering wheel or experience how it is to be inside a submarine.

Actually a quite cool museum detailing the history of Portuguese naval exploration during the Age of Discovery. Its also not very touristy at all, there werent many people in here when I visited. The exhibits are very informative and detailed, and almost all of them have English translations.Theres a lot more than just the Age of Discovery exhibits. There are model ships, instruments used during the times, artifacts bringing to crewmen, and even modern navy exhibits. The barges at the end were interesting but I wouldve loved to see more historic ships from the 15th and 16th century (none of which are in the barge pavilion, unfortunately).

Very informative museum with a wide range of information and objects, including the history of seafaring from 15th century to the present, military implications, navigational advancements, hundreds of model ships, and even a plethora of actual royal barges. The first 1/3 with the history and last 1/3 with royal barges were great, though the middle could use a little TLC on the displays as the small signage and variety was a little lacking. The royal barges were also quite interesting though some signs are minimalistic. There are some benches to sit in throughout though sparce in areas. It was also a lot less busy than the other museums - not sure why as there was a lot to see! We spent 1:15 with reading a lot from the first 1/3 then speed sightseeing the rest.

Very beautiful museum with a broad collection. The visit begins with the explanation of the Discoveries around the 15th century, and continue until nowadays with the marine army. I preferred the first room with plenty of historic explanation, reproduction of old boats and some historical pieces, but the rest of the visit is also worth the time. The last "room" is a warehouse with real size boats and planes.3.5e for students, it takes 1h30~ to visit.

An amazing place if you like the history and boats. One of the World’s largest exhibition of boat models: from tiny ones to the men-sized ones. As a bonus you get to see few airplanes too. Also great cafe at the end of the museum. Definitely recommend! Entrance was 6€ and we spent there 1.5 hours.

The Museum of the Navy is a great attraction. A great surprise indeed. Loaction couldn´t be better. It is located in the left end of the building of Jeronimos Monastery and it is within short walking distance from other major attractions such as the Torre de Belem, Museum of Moder Arts, etc. The Museum is very impressive with old artifacts, amazing replicas and a big adjacent area with incredible original boats. Staff was very welcoming. They also have a store and the food in there (lunch was fine.

Honestly, I had never heard of this museum prior to visiting Lisbon. I am now so glad that we visited this museum. We were out on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in mid-September in Lisbon, when we decided to visit Belem and visit the old facilities around that part of the port, since there is a lot of history there. Unfortunately, the skies clouded up and it started to rain. However, because of the rain, we decided to duck into this museum and wait out the rain. That was a great decision. We now love this museum.Since Portugal is a seafaring nation, it is only natural to showcase the history of these great navigators and explorers. Those exhibits are on display here in abundance. This is the first time I have ever seen real pieces of eight. I knew what they were but had never seen them. There are charts and paintings and various pieces of ships navigation equipment and uniforms and armaments. It is just amazing. But my favorite part of this museum is the barge pavilion. Within these walls are some exquisite vessels used to transport royalty on various trips, both leisure and business. There are also a few very historic aircraft, which was my favorite part. I have attached a few photos to this review. We spent far longer here than we thought we would, and we enjoyed every minute of it.I highly recommend this museum. It is easy worth a visit.

Great museom for anyone interested about sailing, history of sailing and beautiful ships. This museum has great collection of anything sailing related from maps to equipment, minuature models of big ships. Museum has incredible collection of old time ships, which are in the last part of the museum. Many of the artifacts are actually copies, which is a bit disappointment, but theres many that are real and used in the old days.

This is a MUST SEE when visiting Lisbon / Belém! We were very impressed with the museum, model ships & royal barges. The history was thorough and you really get a grasp of how the Portuguese pioneered the discovery of new lands and invented navigation hundreds and hundreds of years ago!

Instead of having a long wait trying to get into the monastery, I rather advise to visit this museum around midday. It holds some incredible treasures the Portuguese navy have used or built! Some of these must-see accesories have great age and are definetely precious enough to see! The big museum uses up enough time to go and see the monastery at much shorter line (and waiting time). It therefor leaves enough time to go and see it in its last opening hour (which is enough time!).

The museum is small, and only part of it (the exhibit as of April 2018has translation into English. Overall you could spend one hour here and be in and out. I would spend the time wandering the inside of the monastery instead. There is some really well thought out history and story line in the off-chamber rooms that made for a good read! Get the combo ticket for 12EUR here and then you can SKIP THE QUEUE at the monastery!!! So amazing.
