Carrer de la Força, 8, 17004 Girona, Spain, Girona
Museum with Jewish history exhibits ranging from the religion's origin to culture, plus a gift shop.
Great way to learn aout Jewish life 15th century.
Very good perspective of Jewish community establishment in Girona, including their persecution and losses during the Inquisition. Enjoyable experience
Learned a lot. Great museum.
Wonderful, cheap experience. Lots to learn and very informative audio guide. Very interesting history, some interactive portions.
The museum was small but we found our short visit here quite educational. There was a moment at the photo exhibit that was an emotional experience. The reception staff was lovely.
Very interesting and a window to rich cloture that is gone…
This was a very informative and heartbreaking museum right in the heart of the Oldest part of Girona. One is transported back in time and the history was well presented without a lot of sentimentality.
Moses ben Nachman, aka the Ramban, one of the Rishoniem, was from Girona.
A definite must if youre of the Faith or not, a definite piece of history
Beautiful museum situated in the old Jewish quarter. Included parts of the old Jewish baths, synagogue and excavation site. Highly recommend. Also let’s you store your luggage. This museum left no stone unturned. The research done was incredible. Detailed descriptions of Jewish life in Cataluña. Some obscure facts including on Jewish mysticism, womens contributions, specific customs & celebrations, even listing specific names of different kinds of trades people. And they did not gloss over the treatment of the Jews by the dominant Catholic rulers and during the Inquisition. The peaceful rooftop garden counter-balanced these brutal stories.
Very interesting, audio guides were cool
Historical Jewish museum and Jewish quarters makes this place an interesting visit in Girona. Narrow alleys and mysterious turns make this place an unforgettable experience.
It depends if you’re interested in the history. Still a nice place to look around and there is free wifi and audio guide
An interesting and moving bit of history. The signage could have been more consistent.I do not understand why museums do not do a better job of lighting here in Spain. BIZARRE,really, as one is there to see things on display,no?
The museum is Quite nice but the guide is not polite and people really distracted. Lots of people with bags, including in the group the complaining guide was working with. She complained only about my bag not in the locker. I dont bother why but I bother a lot when others are not treated the same way. It happened at 11:15 of Oct 28th.
Very well done museum with an excellent audio tour in English and a beautiful courtyard. There is also an elevator available for those with strollers or wheelchairs (ask at the front desk)
A lovely place sharing the history of my people who were expelled in 1492, or forcibly converted or murdered. Very informative. A definite must see!
Good display - but quite a few printed board, little low on actual exhibits.
People listening to their audio guides loudly without earphones and ritually reciting texts in groups, along with small print explanations in English made this museum, although filled with props and in a pleasant building, rather difficult to enjoy. The audio guide also just babbles on forever rather than guiding you through the exhibits. Came to learn but cant say I have
Very interesting audio guide in several languages
Very good experience, tickets for students are only 2€ with an audio guide included. Museum is very interesting and takes about a hour to visit.
If youre jewish or religiously tolerant, this will probably have 5 stars; as a catholic, youll find the Spanish Inquisition section a bit too harsh; as a history enthusiast you should put this place as a 5th must in touring the city, after the Cathedral, the old quarters, the Archaeological Museum, and the City Museum.
Its really interesting, has a lot to give and also has two small gardens perfect to take pictures during the summer time!
Excellent experience! Really great job of discussing and showing the history!! The entrance was 4€ and there is a audio guide. I learned so much about what happened to the Jewish community in Girona. Definitely suggest all tourists to visit. It is very organized and well thought of. Very informative
Much historically significant Jewish artifacts are housed in this former temple. You can view the mica along with numerous grave stones which have been preserved. Allow a minimum of 1-2 hours. Free on holidays.
If you are interested in learning about the quaint Jews as if they are objects and not actually people, this is the museum for you. The way they portrayed the history of the Jews of Spain was exceedingly problematic. As if there was a tiny little disagreement between those silly little Jews and the righteous Christians, and those cute Jews decided to leave of their own free will (rather than get killed.Things like an edict from the king of Spain not being translated into any language would have made a big difference, for example. Or not referring to female Jews as Jewesses. In short, its dated, its offensive, its objectifying, and they need to have another think about the importance of language.
Extraordinary story of the history of the Jewish people in Catalonia told excellently. We didnt use the audio guide, but every display is well described in English. Very interesting, horrifying and haunting, perhaps forgotten, story. Really glad to have gone, I learnt a lot. Reasonable entry price too.
This museum has one of the most impressive collection of artifacts, objects and jewish heritage Ive ever seen. The whole place is like going back in time! If youre taking a history trip in Girona, this place is a must. The people who work there are polite and friendly.
This museum is a jewel in Girona not to be missed. Effectively presents the story of the Jewish community in this medieval town, from the 10th century to the Inquisition ion 1492. Through artifacts, stories and well described displays, it tells the story of the Jews growth and persecution.
Tip: teachers with identification get half off the admission fee. I spent about 1.5 hours learning about the 600 years that Jews lived in Girona. Many artifacts help to tell the story, including the mikveh used by the community so many years ago. I appreciated that most of the museums displays included English alongside Catalan and Spanish.
The museum is interesting and full of ambient. It’s located in what used to be the synagogue of one of the famous Jewish communities of medieval times. It tells the story of its greatness and its demise by means of torture and forced conversion.
Must visit place in Girona to understand the Jewish culture that existed in Girona in particular and Catalonia in general. N.B - Girona is known as the Mother City of Israel for its highly intellect findings of the Jewish heritage!Aaaand - The City of Braavos and the Old City (High Septon of Baelor in the popular TV series Game of Thrones have shooting locations in the Jewish Quarter!
Very important location to visit.
interesting experience. this two Mannequins from the museum looks like characters from the book (or series"The Handmaids Tale" no? Offred and Selina
Wasnt really interesting or worth the money I paid. Often times there was no translation to English and the AC wasnt working. I dont think that this is the right way to learn about the interesting past of the Jewish community in Spain.
Such an interesting place Hard to believe there was such a Jewish presence here
It was very interesting to see the Jewish history in that area. We were shoked by some on the information.
The main aim of the Museum is to preserve and reflect the history of the Jewish communities of Catalonia, which throughout the entire medieval period formed part of, and made a decisive contribution to, the history of the country and its cultural and scientific development. The Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492.
This museum tells the history of a vibrant and significant community. Girona was known as the Mother City of Israel and many scholars were based here. It also tells the painful story of the expulsion of the Jewish community from Girona. I will never forget the collection of grave stones which were taken from the Montjuic grave site and repurposed as building materials in the city. The museum has reclaimed and restored these stones. A painful lesson that we must remember.
100% recommend this museum. It was interesting and covered a lot of history. The layout was nice and easy to follow. Everything is in Catalán, Castillian, English and French. Staff were very friendly. Great visit!
Had a lovely experience, and joined group with a tour guide. Unfortunately didnt catch the name of the lady who took us around, but she was so lovely and informative. A beautiful building, finished off with a walk around the city learning about its Jewish history. Would highly recommend. Also reasonably priced and worth it!
its good to see that history was preserved so next generation will learn from past mistakes, hopefully. nice building, expo, friendly stuff. if you like history you will enjoy.
This Jewish museum is amazing , especially to people that are interested in history and culture , inside it there are lots of antique pieces which explain the old jewish civilization in this area at that time . Returning back in history , exactly to the 12th century , when the Jewish community of Girona had flourished, they had one of the most important Kabbalistic schools in Europe
Very impressive and concise museum presenting the history of the Jews in Spain & Catalonia, and of specifically of Girona. The museum is intended for Jews and non Jews alike. It is located in the well-preserved Jewish quarter of Girona, over an old Jewish house with a recently-discovered mikveh (ritual bath).
Interesting museum, to know the history of Jews in Girona. Nice artifacts and memorabilia
Among best Girona Museums.Clean, modern design. Interesting exhibits.I recommend reading the "room notice boards" - very accessible readings about every day habits, values of the Jewish society.
Beautiful Museum for the History of one of Catalonias largest Jewish Community or Cal as they were called in the Past, has a lot of Artifacts from the Citys Historic Community which once was able to produce true Kabalist and Halacha Giants such as Nahmanides (Ramban)The Museum Shop is packed full of Information about the community and the salesperson were kind and attentive. definitely worth the visit if Jewish History in your Thing.
Really informative and sad museum about the Jewish history in Barcelona. The museum has a lot of reading so small kids might get a little bord. There are many old manuscripts and artifacts in the museum from the time of the Inquisition.
The museum depicts in an educative manner the Gironas rich Jewish history.A very nice museum, with beautiful collections, with a clear itinerary through the Gironas Jewish history. It is a pity there is no restaurant or tea saloon (on the nice and relaxing terrace for instance)The museum offers an audioguide and a shop / bookshop.Dont miss that cultural place in Girona!
This quiet, 3-story museum is mostly information oriented. The story of the Girona Jewish quarter is an important one and needs to be told... the population was mostly expelled during the inquisition. Surprisingly, there is an important collection of Jewish tomb stones from this period that survive and are preserved by this museum.
