This museum in a former convent offers eclectic exhibits of historical artifacts, art & taxidermy.
Very interesting Natural History Museum in a nunnery. Many animal exhibits that are endemicat the Azores. There are also interesting facts about the formation of the islands.
A very interesting place. The church itself is intricately ornate, with the historic paintings fascinating.
Very interesting nature history collection, worth a visit.
If you dont know what to do with your child when it rains, this museum is a very good idea. It contains many naturalistic relics: stuffed animals (among which a huge scaring white shark, sunfishes, a young spermwhale, strange creatures from the abyss, stuffed priolos, a calf with two heads, cows, a panther, lots of birds etc...and bones of dolphins and spermwhales. There is also a room dedicated to the geology and history of the island, a room dedicated to rocks, another one to insects and invertebrates. If you like stuffed animals and skeletons and you visit Rome (Italydont miss the "Museo Civico di Zoologia" next to Villa Borghese.
Small but very nice natural history museum with a lot of animals like fish, birds, insects and mammals. Enjoyed it very much
Definitely worth the 5 EUR for the complete visit! No lines and no reservations needed. There is a lot to see, I was especially fascinated by the natural part of the museum with all the taxidermied animals and also the natural history of Sao Miguel and the Azores. They let us keep our bags in a locker for free and there was also a clean bathroom available. The staff members were friendly and helpful.
Interesting museum with a mix of local and natural history. Free on the Sunday we visited but entrance fee modest at other times
Highly recommend for anyones first trip to the azores. 1.5 hrs well spent.
I like this place!
Went to all 3 locations of the museum, convent was very impressive
Nice animals collection. Shark and cashalot jaw are really cool.
We didnt get a chance to visit inside.
I been to Sao Miguel Azores few time, this my first time went to the Museum it amazing a lot to offer, the history and culture, I spent two hours there … highly recommend 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Very nice building, I arrived late to this museum, maybe next time.
Interesting Museum in an old convent. Rich exhibits of natural history.
Free entrance to all 3 museums till 5pm for anyone. Interesting collection of local fish, world collection of birds and other stuffed animals. Worth the visit
Very nice museum. With an surprisingly collection. The natural history post is really worth visiting. Also nice for children because of all the stuffed animals.
What an incredibly beautiful old church and convent! Hard to believe but in the historic cloister they have these ridiculously ugly plastic chairs. It was built around 1795. Its an absolute disgrace that they have those in such a beautiful historic building.
Very interesting Museum! You get to know many things about Azores island. If you have time, check it out.
Very nice and interesting museum! Definitely worth a visit! It covers the history and fauna of the Azores and Sao Miguel island as well. Sadly we arrived just an hour before closing, I could stay a lot more! Thank you!
The convent was a bit of a busy, but the contemporary art museum, although small, was super, especially the work of sculptor Ernesto do Canto
One of the weirdest museums l have ever visited in Europe- the taxidermy section is in the usual unfashionable display cabinets and all exhibits rather disgusting, especially the false eyes and teeth. However, they do add a bit of humour to this morbid collection and the freaky disabled calves are a rare sight. The rest of the museum is the convent which has a beautiful chapel with a spectacular wooden carved alter. For anyone wishing to visit this alongside the other 2 local Carlos Machado museums you can get a reduction- a mere 3€ for all 3, so go to all.
Its a neat museum! We spent about an hour there and found things really interesting, it exceeded my expectations greatly. They have taxidermied animals and fish from 1700s! And more cool stuff. It is affordable - its 2 euros per person for just this part of a museum or 5 euros to cover the entrance to 3 museum in a center of Ponta Delgada
2 euros for the taxidermy museum. It’s was ok. Lots of critters. Weird dead two headed calves might be the highlight. Unless you like rock and bug collections.
Very nice museum, with a great variety of bird and fish species
Not much to see. Really dark inside. Doesnt really tell you about Azores history.
Great price, cool eclectic mix of history, geology, and biology of the Azores.
Unless you really like the sculpter there are better more interesting places. Its only one gallery and you are strictly informed that you have seen it all at the end! His clay masks are beautiful but it is rather dull.
Its quite a small museum but its packed full of interesting artifacts and taxidermy. The staff were lovely enough to point us in the correct direction multiple times but I do think it should be signposted better as we did still manage to get a little lost near the end.
Very detailed museum, filled with a lot of information and very unique things. Its not very big but if you like to read and see everything then it should take you almost 2-3 hours to complete the museum.
Beautiful place. definition of beauty has many interpretations. One of the ponta delgada, Açores
Nice museum with a lot of history from azores and from the place where it is housed.
Natural history of Azores. Good for children and adults.
Great way to spend a rainy afternoon meeting about local history.
Very small museum. Has rooms of stuffed small birds and fish. Was hoping for more local history.
One of the great surprises of our stay in Ponta. The biology / nature part is so great. Lots of stuffed animals and interesting insights on the history of the place. Absolutely recommend this when you want to do something else than be stunned by nature in the area. Super welcoming staff as well. A great 10/10 !
Verry intresting
Lots of interesting things to look at very reasonable price
It was fascinating place especially people who are interested in nature history. I would say the inside is not big, but there are a lot of things to see. Sometimes I was confused because I didn’t know which nameplate to be referred. In general, I enjoyed a lot!
Sunday is free admission at all 3 Carlos Machado Museums. We truly enjoyed all three today, a must see.
Lots to see, well presented information but routing through the museum could be better signed.
The natural history museum was our favorite. But there are actually 3 separate museums and you can visit all three! We didnt particularly like the religious art, but going in the old nuns cloister was also very interesting. There wasnt a lot of narrative text provided on the walls or with some of the exhibits, so I would recommend getting a printed guide or asking the docents lots of questions!
A museum composed of three separate houses, from art, history to natural sciences and religion. Worth spending time there.
Free on Sundays. There are creepy stuffed animals but it is still interesting. The staff is nice.
Museum of natural history. Very oldfashined collection. Entertaining in a weird way 🤔
Nice and peacefull garden
Really nice place, it had many diversity and cheap tickets. The staff was really kind but they were following us like we were criminals hahahIt had a different person in every room and they were looking at us the whole time. But despite that it was a nice experience.
Interesting. Still, the staff are going behind you like secret services.
Nice use of the old nunnery. Interesting and well presented exhibits on the history of the azores and their nature and the building itself. Good value too.
So many rooms and specimens to see. My favorite room as a locked Cabinet of original flora catalogs dating back at least 200 years. Amazing!! I loved how the museum segued into a convent with a courtyard and many religious artifacts. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
