Calle Beneficencia, San Juan, 00926, Puerto Rico, Fajardo
Exhibits in an 1800s army barracks showing pre-Columbian to modern art from the Americas.
Under renovation but still a really interesting museum
There is a pro Marxism anti-US display that should disgust every free person who enjoys the benefits of democracy. Why would you embarrass yourselves with this display? It is only because of the freedoms of a democratic republic that you can display such vulgar images. In the Marxist Socialism you are celebrating, with the Garvin José Sierra Vega, such expressions would be forbidden.
Much of the museum was under construction and many rooms blocked off. I suspect the experience would have been better in the peak tourist season.
All you need to do is open your eyes and explore the art enjoy my photos
Alonso was THE BEST tour guide! Im so glad that I had a chance to take a tour with him in Antonio Martorells exhibit! Great museum!
Incredibly knowledgeable, thoughtful staff. A must visit museum.
Incredible building & collections! They had an event so made us leave earlier than posted closing time. Was disappointing & unprofessional as they made us pay again to return the next day.
The interior courtyard is gorgeous, unfortunately the museum was closed the day we visited. We were still able to sit and enjoy coffee in the courtyard.
lots of beautiful architecture and art galleries to explore ☺️
Very cool unique museum. Wish wed had more time (tried to do the whole thing in less than 40 minutes because of a reservation across town).
Beautiful art museum. At least 6 different exhibit spaces. Modest cost.
Park the car and Walk! Enjoy the Old City.
Mask requirements are reason why this is 4-stars, besides that, amazing museum, absolutely beautiful, especially I believe exhibit #6 or #7 with the Latin American items, like Colombian Dresses and neat stuff like that.
Amazing place to visit, this Museum has 8 galleries and the staff is great.
A must-see when visiting Old San Juan, beautiful and thought-provoking art, and good value.
Loved how they remodeled everything. Its wonderful to see the care they put into each room.
I really liked that many of the galleries were very recent (pandemic related exhibits and newer). I was surprised there was not more gallery space devoted to PR history and pre-colonialization people. Also there were less English translations in the PR history exhibits, seemed to just be summarizations of the more extensive Spanish placards.
An incredible museum, a very interesting building thats been thoughtfully decorated as they renovate it. The exhibits were very well done and it was a good size, not too small, but varied enough to hold our interest for an afternoon.
Great place to learn local art and Puetro rico history. Also, learned very sad history about the slave trade. Some parts are only in Spanish though. Still, I believe this museum is a great place to learn history and arts of Puetro Rico.
This is a very cool museum! They had eight galleries open today when we went. The cost is only $6 per adult to get in. Each gallery has a completely different theme. Lots to see in this museum.
Very impressive museum! We got there about 45 minutes before closing and were able to at least walk through each room! Could have easily spent a half day here. Perfect mix of art and archeology!
Meh! Most of what they are showing is not interesting or worth looking at. The price matches the value.
We enjoyed our visit at Museo de las Americas in old San Juan. Presents works 20th and 21st century Puerto Rican artists. Has an African culture and slave trade exhibit. Excellent docents who enhances understanding of the exhibits. Located in former Spanish garrison with large central open air courtyard. Food available inside museum. Has an unique pre-Columbus indigenous erotic clay figure sculpture exhibit.
has good information about PR and the caribbeans. Yet they dont open on time - be sure to arrive a few minutes late than the opening hours.
Not a big art museum, but it had a great variety of work. Local artists and ancient pieces were featured in individual galleries throughout the building. Allow a couple hours.
Great place to enjoy some local art and learn about the history and culture of Puerto Rico. In addition, there are several salons that rotate every so often to show new and exciting art.If you are visiting or just having some good time in the Old San Juan take a little time and visit the Museo de Las Americas.
Beautiful building!! Love the Architecture
It has 5 different small galleries displaying the works of various local artists and other themes like the African influence, etc. Unfortunately the gallery depicting the history of PR through the 1500s does not have English translations.
Small, well curated art museum. Only five of the eight exhibits were open but they were well worth the visit. We spent about two hours there before they closed for lunch and could have easily spent more time. I wish they had more information on some of the artifacts and a more robust gift shop. However for just a few dollars per person entry and a truly moving experience, no complaints.
This is why this whole city reeks of urine... the "public" bathrooms at the museum are all out of order long term. There are restrooms for the staff who you are supporting with your admission fees but your not allowed to use those.
Very eclectic museum showcasing history, culture and art. We learned a lot about history of the island and the African slave trade. Also learned about African culture and saw Puerto Rican native and Christian art. Great experience for only $6.
Awesome heritage museum!!
Roberto and a couple other staff were very friendly and had some good stories to share. Just the one room with art by Rafael Trelles was worth the entry for me (compared to the other museums we visited in SJ). Hopefully theyll get the Taino room open soon, too
Such a stunning museum! I learned such a great deal here, it was very expansive. Living in DC, I wish we had better representation there (although the new National Museum of the American Latino is coming!!). This was one of the most beautiful museums I’ve been to with striking social and historical commentary. So grateful for this museum! The staff were also very helpful and kind.
Had a good experience overall at the museum. They have some great artifacts and I loved the embrace they have for the African heritage on the island. I wish the staff was as nice. Various personnel were fairly cold to my wife and I. Not sure why.
There is a bathroom inside there. Go by the water get a fresh coconut. They will chop the end off stick a straw in it. Most people dont know coconut water hydrates you better then Gatorade or water. You can also get passion fruit icee or coconut mango. Go!
This is a huge museum with fascinating exhibits!! It will actually take you at least 2-3 hours to get though it. Very interesting history and also modern art exhibits exploring the resilience of the Puerto Rican people and their connection to nature.
Very well maintained and managed local museum, we experienced a local collection of artwork contributed by student/staff community which was an insightful experience into PR..
Although on the second floor of an ancient military barracks the museum is clean fresh and informative.I accidentally left my chang from admission tickets behind and a guard chased me down the block with it as I left.
It’s been a few years since my first visited this museum. Just the scenery brings back memories. It’s all beautifully keep!
Nice museum $6 for adults, I wish I had taken pictures of one of the rooms they had 5 gallon butane tanks with notches cur in them and when you hit them with a drum stick they made beautiful bell tones. It was a nice place to to visit and I would go again as the exhibits change.
A wonderfully maintained building, rich with history. Fascinating that it was occupied for years for Spanish colonized families, then Queen America joke over they gave it immediately back to the Puerto Rican government. You can use the bathrooms here as well by the way.
Wonderful small museum with 6-7 separate galleries. A very nice variety of paintings and media used. There is a coffee shop/snack shop in the building with the museum. The museum is a short walk from the fortress. We spent about 2 hr. in the museum and enjoyed the art and cultural expression. See this museum and the fortress in a single morning; fortress first; museum second - most galleries have AC!
Being part of a small community is a wonderful thing! Being able to travel the continent without leaving the building and learning from hundreds of ethnical groups in just one room its even better! When you visit, make sure you talk to the guides for extra experience. Write to me if you need more information.. Used to work there and I miss it deeply..
Inside a quiet square (also containing a small cafe/coffee shopand currently being renovated from storm damage, there is still an exhibit open called Catharsis. This exhibit was beautiful and full of pieces from local artists and students to express their feelings from the storm, aftermath, and recovery. Some were hopeful - others more critical of the storm recovery efforts - but overall helped us as tourists empathize with the local culture.
Wowzer, this place is gorgeous and informative and cool. They have so many artifacts from native tribes, folk arts and crafts, information about the abolitionist movement. Its mind-blowing. They have a couple of contemporary exhibits too, which is neat. Bargain at 6 bucks per person.
This place is simply beautiful... Its a must see if you are ever in San Juan....
8 different rooms that each have their own focus. I believe that the focus of each room change from time to time, although Im not sure. The entrance is $6 for adults, $4 for students, kids and +60 which is acceptable.
The museum has 8 exhibits in total to visit (2 static & 6 rotatinghowever a recent fire has removed one of the rotating exhibits, and there is always the chance that a rotating exhibit will be in transition. Nevertheless expect to find at least 6 exhibits on any visit to the museum. The building itself is quite historic and had been used as hospital during past wars. The lower Plaza remains open to the public all day and is lined with restaurants, you will often find people gathering here for art or music lessons, the second floor contains the museum, though be sure to pay for your tickets in the gift shop or you will be making an extra trip up the stairs. The third floor is used for government offices.Plan for a 1-3 hours here depending on how much time you like to spend on each place. This is a good midday activity as it will keep you in AC and out of the sun.
Must go while in San Juan. They got interesting history about native Indians and history about "plantations" etc. They used a combination of artifacts, figures, video etc
