299 Avenida José de Diego, San Juan, 00909, Puerto Rico, San Juan
Esteemed art museum specializing in Puerto Rican art, housed in 1920s neoclassical former hospital.
We spent a long time here! Wonderful and affordable experience to learn about Puerto Rico’s art and its history. We enjoyed the diverse collections and the stories they told. For the garden, I would recommend going when it’s not too hot out as we weren’t able to enjoy it fully due to the summer heat. Otherwise, great experience for all ages!
This place was fun to do on a rainy day in San Juan. There were a variety of different art styles and the rooms were well organized. We enjoyed it very much!
Great musuem! There were a wide range of exhibits at the musuem. There is something for everyone to enjoy here. I definitely enjoyed the outdoor sculpture garden!
This is an incredible art museum. The staff here are all enthusiastic to share information about the art. All of the art from the permanent gallery features artists from Puerto Rico
Amazing experience here. They have refreshed galleries there. Love it! One of the you must see museum if you are visiting around.
Wonderful collection in beautiful old hospital building. Floor #s are confusing. Very unprofessional to be asked to see wristband 6x in my 2 hr visit. There were very few visitors so hard to imagine much sneaking around esp with how cheap admission is.
We really enjoyed ourselves here. It was quite the experience and Im glad that we went. The check in process was pretty efficient and informative. The guides throughout the various floors were helpful. We did get on one floor where the woman was a bit aggressive, but we made a good time out of it either way.I hate that we missed the smooth jazz in the gardens because of the rain.
Exhibits with both English and Spanish explanations are well curated, a variety of different styles and time periods are portrayed. I enjoyed the focus on contemporary art that showcases the diversity of Puerto Rican artists experiences! As a bonus the museum is very well air conditioned which makes it even more of a treat on a hot day. Very kind museum staff eager to discuss the art in more detail. Grounds and garden sculptures are also worth seeing. Parking is near the corner of the museum in the garage.
Excellent experience. Check times and dates of operation, and discounts. Parking is expensive, but you can park in Minillas, if visiting on weekdays. Bus stop is nearby.
Its an amazing place to enjoy several forms of art expressions. The staff is very kind and helpful. A great experience!
I adore this museum. It always has the best artworks and the vibe is so calm you really get connected. The museum is very well kept, this one is a must do for art lovers.
The best thing to do on land in Puerto Rico. The art was fantastic, and Im very glad we paid for both exhibits. If you are feeling like paying for two exhibits is a financial burden, please consider that me and my friend were able to buy tickets to both for less than the cost of a single ticket to the museum in Chicago or Boston.
Awesome place...First time visiting...👍
Wonderful collection of art primarily created in PR. We enjoyed the permanent collections as well as the visiting exhibit. As with most contemporary collections, some are quite fun while others are more bizarre. One of my favorites was this bullfighter done with needlepoint.Masks were required in June 2022, and they gladly provided them to visitors who did not have one.
I really enjoyed this museum. There is a wide collection of art, from paintings to sculptures. Theres a nice garden and koi pond outside. And a childrens section. They have vending machines and a gift shop ,but no restaurant/ food served.
Wish had more time in museum. Beautiful place, courteous staff at ticket counter and other.
The people working there are actually passionate about the art they are showcasing. Often they would come over to offer background information on many pieces and also answer any questions you may have had. Please make sure y’all remember, MASKS ARE STILL MANDATORY which is kinda wild considering no one else anywhere requires it but it is what it is. Parking is hard to find so there is that. Besides that, even if you don’t like art at all, it’s a cool place to kill a couple hours
Very high quality museum with interesting and engaging art. Took about 2 hours to see all the galleries. Highly recommend a visit.
The exhibitions were great, it was easy to navigate and very organized. The garden is beautiful.
I just had an awesome experience with this museum. The work arts are really amazing and reflect a lot of Puerto Rican history and traditions. I would also like to leave my especial thanks to the museum staff, mainly to Mr. Jose, who explained to me in depth about those incredible pieces they have in the museum. It’s a place I’ll definitely go back whenever I’m again in San Juan
This museum is absolutely amazing!! It is huge and also has a garden art exhibit in which you can get some gorgeous pictures.
Beautiful location for walk through the back and it’s quiet garden area
This is a wonderful place. Its a very welcoming environment and most of the staff are friendly and helpful. The collections are extensive and comprehensive, with much variety of genres, nationalities and eras. Theres a strong collection of local art, which theyve taken an inclusive approach to, featuring many people not born in PR, but who moved there. At the time of my visit, they had some excellent temporary exhibitions, including one on landscape, one on the plurality of Puerto Rican identity, and one in pre-Raphaelites. Highly recommended.
Hands down one of the best museums I’ve ever been to! The building is amazing from the outside and it doesn’t stop once inside. There is art for everyone at this museum! Price for the entire museum, special exhibits, and sculpture garden was $13. The do not have a cafe, but there are plenty of places around after a visit. Pieces range from historic and contemporary Puerto Rican art to traditional paintings from the 1700’s, sculptures, experiential, and video. They have a program for the blind as well with replicas of some objects to touch (something I’ve never seen at a museum! The artists include queer and LGBTQ+ people and the descriptions use gender inclusive language! 100% THE museum you should visit while in San Juan.
The staff is very helpful. The patio area on the back of the museum is quiet and well maintained.
Very interesting museum with great art and a garden where I photographer this rainbow tree. Two paintings I particularly liked. Just see in person.
Museum of mostly Puerto Rican art with an addition of some European art and a pleasant garden. Was interesting to explore the local artists and the topics influencing them. There were mostly 2 floors and a basement. A bit weird numbering system of the floors (they called the second floor - fourth). There were water fountains and a museum store with awesome jewelry. It was a bit too chilly in the museum, therefore we spent maybe 1.5h.
Absolutely a must see. If you can take the tour, do so! Really great experience learning about the history and culture of the island.
Worth the visit, and 1-1.5hr is more than enough time. Inspiring artwork. My favorite was the "No crying in the barbershop."I was a little disappointed with the garden, though.
Tickets for general exhibits are very affordable, and you can add on additional galleries if you would like. Allow yourself at least 2.5 hours. Staff are very kind and helpful and offered interesting facts about the art.
For gallery enthusiasts, you will enjoy the beautiful multi-level marbled modern interior space. Well managed super clean oasis in San Juan staffed by seasoned & passionate docents. We toured the permanent collections of 20th and 21st century works in about 2 hours. 2nd level has interactive space for youngest visitors. Outside is 2 acre sculpture garden.
Beautiful, beautiful museum! I’ve visited every time I’ve come to the island, and it never disappoints! The current ticket price to visit all parts of the museum is $13 and $8 for the main exhibits. Like everywhere else, you currently have to show your vaccination card and ID to enter, and you have to wear a mask. There are several beautiful new pieces, and about 4 floors to view in this museum. It’s in a good location, so there are many nearby restaurants. Most of the staff were kind; others could work on though customer service. Still a great museum, I can’t wait to return!
Amazing art museum—add this to your visit!!!The permanent collection is curated thematically, which offers a great look at several centuries of Puerto Rican art! It was also really cool to see contemporary artists alongside previous generations, responding to the same ideas.Highlights for me were the paintings by Puerto Rican Impressionist Francisco Oller as well as the numerous woodcuts/linocuts (some of which were displayed with their carved blocks). The sculpture garden is a great break between exhibitions—not just for the art but also for the beautiful plants and landscaping!I’m an art historian so this was an obvious choice for me, but I’d recommend the museum to anyone who likes art or who wants to get in touch we’re their creative side!
Beautiful museum with so many amazing pieces. This place will take longer than you think to appreciate every one of them! The garden is a welcome quiet oasis just behind the museum.
One of the greatest museums I have ever been to as far as the scope of art presented and the gorgeous botanical garden. A million stars deserved.
Excellent exhibits. Diverse artists especially artwork by or in recognition of women and other members of marginalized groups. Try to set out at least 2 hours to get through at least half of the exhibits. The garden is one of my favorite parts. Oh its also bus accessible.
Low price, especially for students. Only $9 for my group of 3! Beautiful exhibitions and a lovely garden to finish.
loved, Loved, LOOOOVED this museo! Theres so much art to take in. From the permanent collection to the temporary modern/ abstract collection. They also have a gorgeous garden of art installations, with a pond that house Koi fish. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time. The museo closes at five.
I was a bit disappointed with this Museo, I’m not a pro in art, but some street art were better than the ones I saw inside. I did get to learn a little about the journey of Puerto Rico art, but on a micro level. Somethings were creative and then others were just annoying at and was looking forward to leave. However, I did appreciate the garden in the back which was refreshing so I’m grateful for that.
Super cool place to visit. The art is beautiful and its an awesome way to learn about the island.
Really cool museum! Pretty outside garden with sculptures and a koi pond, and inside there are 3 floors of art.
I visited here a few weeks ago when the island was still on lockdown. It was a great experience but you have to buy your tickets online at their website, it cost around $6. Parking can be found in a nearby lot or you can take the chance and park on the street. It opens at 1pm on most days due to the current Covid situation but I recommend calling them in advance so you can plan your visit.
Wow. So impressed by everything we saw here. The gardens alone are worth the visit (no fee for that portion)... We will be back.
It is walking distance from the hotel Im staying. It had a lot of great art. Some of it was graffiti, which I am very partial to. They also have a Banksy in there, not sure how exactly and I would love to know, if anyone has an idea. Please share! I would love to know about that. The place is beautiful and I actually plan to go again before I leave. Gorgeous and the tour guide was very sweet and knowledgeable.
I highly recommend a visit to this museum. The art is amazing. Give yourself enough time to see the different collections of Puerto Rican art available. If you get hungry you can cross the street and have a sandwich at a local shop. Then take a stroll in the sculpture garden when you return to the museum.
An absolutely lovely museum to go to. Great art from Puerto Rican artists. The staff is super friendly and happy to talk about the artwork. Also nice are the interactive works on every floor. In addition there is a lovely garden with a koi pond to wander in. Its only $8 to enter and absolutely worth it.
A lot of variety in art styles and media! The theme is representation of Puerto Rican artists and encompasses both contemporary and historical works. There’s also a sculpture garden that’s not huge but provides lots of private seating spaces. The landscape design was really enjoyable and reminded me of dr suesse illustrations.
Only the main floor was open when we visited, but it was still a good collection inside the permanent exhibits. There was a mixture of historic and contemporary pieces and good interpretative information in both Spanish and English. The real highlight for us was the sculpture garden that was full of many interesting plants (and quite a few large, entertaining iguanasin addition to the art itself.
Great place to get a sense of the culture of PR. It was practically empty upon visiting. Staff hangs out in each area and all spoke great English and offered history on the pieces of art without being too pushy. I recommend for locals and tourists alike as there is some wonderful and odd art.
I love this place! Its my favorite musuem so far. I been a couple of times and its amazing. The lady in the welcome area is obviously passionate about her work, and she explained how to best see the different exhibition and the layout of the musuem. They speak Spanish and English, the art description are also in Spanish and English. My favorite part is going to the kids area and garden. And the big mural about the "Plenas" of Puerto Rico and the area that hold old "Pantarcas"
