The largest museum of European art in the Caribbean
I would like to preface this review with we were the first tour after the quakes. I would have liked to have had the knowledge of needing a reservation prior to arrival; this should be updated in all forms of social media, website, and Google maps. The first person attending us misused the word website with app, and it took me forever and the actual curator to help me make a reservation. Unfortunately, you MUST follow the group BEFORE, viewing the art at your leisure. However, given the circumstances the team has with the buildings conditions, they did a good job with what they could in the annex building. The art selection, I was glad to see, had some of the classics.
Its my favorite museum, dont get me wrong. Ive visited this museum 3 times but the last time I went (4th visitit was temporary closed and I wasnt aware because that detail was not updated on Google. Like I said, dont get me wrong, its an amazing museum.
Definitely a few hours is not enough to enjoy this museum! It is gorgeous!!! From the architecture of the building itself to the art inside! The souvenir shop is slightly expensive but dont miss it!!!! I would recomend you to call prior so you can get a tour guide. Also: if youre a student with a valid ID you get a discount! If youre going to Ponce dont miss the museum!!! P.S all the paintings, particularly scenery ones look way better live!
One of the few art museums in Puerto Rico, it has a permanent collection of Puerto Rican paintings from 19 and 20th century artist such as Campeche, Oller and Frade and also a large collection of European Renaissance art. Very nice architecture with small garden and outside open spaces but beware of the hot sun.
A real gem for art lovers. European masters and Puerto Rican artists prominently featured. From the front desk representatives to the tour guides, guards and gift shop staff you will encounter pure professionalism and pride in their beautiful museum. Definitely worth the trip from San Juan.
Amazing museum and highly highly recommended. From Velasquez to Durrer to El Grecco and number of others. The art is great, the building is as good as any other major art museum I have seen. I am blown away...
Great collection of art, including a couple of works by impressionist Francisco Oller. A must see for any art connoisier. Admission is cheap and students as well as seniors over 55 get in for half price...beautiful works of art...
It has good cuality art place, its has alot of security is easy to find and there are alot of activities isnt as big as an moma but is a exelent place for visit like tourism or in family... it has nice things in the shop... enjoy... this was moust an tour of local mundillo art... compare with old ones very interesting...
Excellent museum! Extraordinary art and we learn a lot! Extremely inexpensive $6 per person for an enjoyable afternoon! Thanks!
One of the best experience related to art. You can see some of the best Puerto Rican art with a tuch of peace and quite. They have special section every now and then you need to pay for that part of the museum extra. In my opinion its worth the money because they have usually intresting activities related to that art section.
I loved my last visit to the MAP, as a group we saw one exhibition and then participated on a workshop. It was a guided tour about Zilia Sanchezs work...exquisite!!
I would like to see more arts of the Caribbean painters in a museum like this one. There is a lot of paintings and sculptures from Europe. The place is well organized, youll find a little garden area through you tour. There is a cute food store as well, to grab a bite after your visit. I recommend to take a look in the museum store, it is a retailers of only locally made products!
Pretty good... I only wished they had more guided tours or headset with a more in depth explanation and stories. The price is more than adecuate and the interior is in great shape!
Beautiful paintings and classical works with a touch of contemporary art in the first floor. The place is also very esthetic. You can even see wild Puertorrican parrots around, which are endangered species.
The museum is beautiful and the art is world class with a dash of Puerto Rican! So many things to learn here, but I have to say that the tour process is a little muddy. The website says tours in English and Spanish are offered at 11:00 and 2:00, however, good luck getting a tour in English. First time we went, they told us there was no English speaking Docent that day. So last week I sent an email AND a message on Facebook requesting a tour in English at 11:00 on Wednesday... no reply. So we showed up at 10:30 and were told that the tour just began in Spanish. The process seems to be this: Show up at some time prior to 11:00 and if you express interest in a tour, you get to choose the language and the start time. After a lot of phone calls and attempts to put us off, we were finally given the tour in English, and it was awesome! Im sure you could take the tour 50 times and learn something new and wonderful each time. While I understand that Puerto Rico is on "island time" and I fully embrace that... being a tourist attraction, they could be a little more understanding of their audience and try to be clear and precise in their posting of tour times. Fabulous Museum, so-so customer service.
Beautiful interior. Two lovely outdoor gardens. I enjoyed the smaller of the two. The art is beautifully displayed in well lit rooms. Descriptions are in Spanish and English. The are daily tours. Well worth it. The tours are conducted in English and Spanish. At separate times. Call beforehand to learn their schedule. The is parking. Photos with smartphones are permitted. Without flash. There is a cozy little coffee bar. Beverages, sandwiches, cupcakes are among several delectable items. There is an admission fee. Seniors and children are discounted. Go. You’ll be glad you visited one of Puerto Rico’s jewel museums.
This museum is up to the standards of any museum in Europe. Trust me, I’ve been to many of them! It was a delightful surprise to see works of arts from Rubens, Dorè, Jose Campeche, Francisco Oller, Hiram Power, Van Dyck and the masterpiece Flaming June!! It’s a wonderful museum and it’s a must visit if you’re in Puerto Rico and of course if you enjoy art/history.
Great collection of Puerto Rican art and a very decent collection of European art. A beautiful building and very easy to navigate.
Great arts, well maintained but I dont give 5 stars only because the first floor mens bathroom privacy walls have a lot of separation and it feels like you are part of the naked arts. 😅
Loved the museum! We took a guided tour (offered in both English and Spanish). The staff is welcoming, informative and gracious. Excellent collection of European & Caribbean works of art; over 1000 on display! Lovely and reasonably priced gift shop. Cant wait to go back!
I was floored at the art exhibit from a collection of Puerto Rican Artists. Beautiful and very popular art from England, France, and Spain.
The museum itself is a piece of art. Beautiful pieces all around the building. There are all kind of pieces, from small to big and from dark to bright. A must go if you love art. Loved my experience from start to finish and definetly I consider it one of my favorite museums in Puerto Rico. Will visit again soon.
Fantastic collection of art with a beautiful courtyard.
Lots of classics and always a fresh exhibit. The best part is that it isnt too big a place that you cant see it all in a few hours. Oh, and bring a sweater. Its very cool in there.
A MUST SEE IF YOU ARE VISITING THE ISLAND OF PUERTO RICO! Extremely surprised with the quality & quantity of art from the last 400+ years!
Excellent collection, very well-maintained and attentive and knowledgeable employees.
#ArtinPoncePuertoRico This museum is so rich in art history on the island and in all art Ponce, it was modern clean and well run. The art was amazing, I even saw a marble sculpture older than 100 A.D. fantastic to see something like that. A definite must see if you are ever in Puerto Rico.
Solid art museum. I see why its so renowned. Surprisingly not very busy either. Its not super extensive, but for the size of the island it is very impressive. Dont miss the parking lot. Its tiny and right before the museum. Also bags need to be checked at the main desk but its free so not a big deal. They have staff to let you know what can be photographed and what cant be. Make sure you go to their outside exhibits as well. Not many but worth your time.
The Museum was an excellent experience. The staf are very nice very helpful, the tour was very enlightening. The museum is small in comparison to other museums like the MET in New York or the Louvre in Paris or the Prado in Spain but it has some excellent exhibits and I think its worth the visit
A jewel in the crown of the Caribbean for art lovers! Unfortunately when I went with visiting family members there were no guides in the halls to explain the displays. I remember them being present in every hall in my previous visits. Hopefully they come back!
Puerto Ricos top art museum. Such a great collection of art. Not only from Puertorrican artists but a large representation of Europe as well. Considering the contents this place exhibits, the admission price is cheap. This is a must visit for all born here and for our esteemed visitors.
Would be five stars if not for the shameless self promotion by the former owner. Could he have praised himself any more? Que declasse! The museum holdings are world class. Skip the gift shop. But, stop for a coffee at the little concession. And, dont miss the gardens!
Great, modern museum out of the way in Ponce. However, I dont understand the super strict nature of silly rules like, "please stay on the right side of the stairs". Its meant to protect the place but your staff comes off as trying to create an air of self importance. That aside, its a great place to come and see some beautiful artwork in Puerto Rico. Much of it purchased from local churches during the 50s and 60s.
Had a good time here. Definitely worth it. Plenty of art and paintings to keep you interested for hours.
Super interesting, great history, great art.
I was very happy with the collection they have here! The facility is modern. I really enjoyed my visit. Recommended if you are in the area, see some art. Enjoy the great AC!
Decent sized collection of art. The masks exhibit waa my favorite. Some of the art can be easily photographed other pieces will earn you a talking too by security. Photographed everything to post on social media. Was fun exercising my freedom of speech rights.
We arrived an hour before closing, but as it was going to be our obl chance to see the collection we bought tickets to see the permanent collection only. I guess you can buy a more expensive ticket to see visiting exhibits. We spent the majority of the hour viewing only one small section of the collection. With 10 minutes left we went upstairs to be informed there was another ENTIRE floor of art work. Most of the second floor was older religious related works. Which were amazing, as I raced around and saw them... When we return to PR we will set an entire day to visit.
Wonderful collection of Victorian art, masterful pieces of Puerto Rican artists, beautiful gardens, convenient parking. Came with mom and a 6-year old and we had a great time learning about our heritage and legacy!
It is a very pleasant place to visit. There is a huge and impressive art collection. The place is well kept. I enjoyed my visit. There is only one thing that I dont understand. I am a retired veteran of war. When I asked if they had a military discount, they answered me that it was only available for active personnel. I find this unbelievable. It is not about the discount, it is about the fact of equal recognition.
Great art. The prices are very good if your a member or student with ID you get better fairs. It has a great cafe inside but you dont have to pay to visit the cafe so thats a big plus. The coffe is soooo goood! The customer servise is A+ very elegant place. If you are in Ponce this is a must go to. The gardens a very beautiful and the gift shop has some books that are perfect. And dont forget to buy a tshirt wich theire cheap priced.
This is a wonderful museum of mostly Puerto Rican and European art. Definitely worth the trip from San Juan to see it. Employees are among the most friendly and helpful Ive ever experienced in a museum (and Ive been to a quite a few of them 😁).
The museum is well laid out. It is small, but it has different sections. It has a nice ambience, well lit and cool ac. There isnt much diversity in terms of painting style, periods or themes.
It may be the biggest art museum in the Caribbean, but ... I didnt find it all that impressive. The building is beautiful. We found one of the temporary exhibits significantly more interesting than the permanent collection.
Nice permanent and visiting collections make this a great destination for art lovers. My 8 yr old and I enjoyed wandering and discussing the art styles thru the ages. The Granada garden is a nice outdoors space. We spent ~2hrs.
They have a large collection of highly valued historic paintings, as well as sculptures and other forms of art. The museum also has a coffee shop where you can find delicious coffee (truly!), home-made muffins, a selection of sandwiches, croissants, hummus toasts, among other tasty things to eat. You can also find a store where you can find many interesting gifts or souvenirs and a restaurant. Overall it is a great experience to just either have coffee with a good book and/or enjoy the majestic collections.
Perfect for a rainy day outing!! Great works of art and cool layout, especially the upstairs. Love all the different gardens. Highly recommend going soon during the Isabel exhibit. Amazing history told through the art and there are dresses and other clothing to dress up in and take pictures with the art in the exhibit! Super cool and fun
Its no smithsonian, but it was very high quality, beautiful art. I had wished that some of the pieces had a little more back story to them, but the ones that did were very informative an interesting. All of the signs are in English and Spanish. The price is very reasonable, and if you are a student there is a discount. I would say that this is a must-see site in Ponce.
Great collections and expositions! Lights are set according to each artworks designated perspective. Very kind at the reception and they give student discounts! They have a lot of wonderful surprises.
Very friendly staff and amazing collection. Even kids have a good time. If you really want to enjoy this museum, you will need at least three to four hours to see everything at a good pace. The museum has a coffee shop, restaurant and a gift shop.
