MoreIt was different and fun and free
MoreBeen here a couple times. There wasnt much on display and not much to see on my first visit, but recently there was a new exhibit full of great artwork and immersive experience rooms. It is free to get in and there are nice murals in the back lawn area. Probably need to visit periodically to catch the changing exhibits.
MoreI visited today and currently they dont have an exhibition on. But you can enter to look around - the building itself is pretty, with a couple of nice internal courtyard/garden things with a few sculptures, so its worth a little visit if youre nearby.Presumably there will be an exhibition of art there again soon
MoreNice exhibition
Located off Parque San Sebastián in Cuencas historic center, the modern art museum features immersive art work by South American artists.Historically, the beautiful white building has been home to a recovery center for alcoholics, a male prison, an assisted living facility, and a foundation for impoverished mothers. The museum was inaugurated in 1981.Although I had seen a $2 entrance mentioned online somewhere, I was only asked to sign the registry (without chargeat the entrance. I visited on a Friday morning and there was a preschool group visiting as well as a handful of individuals wandering on their own. Apart from a museum brochure, all information about the art was in Spanish.Small exhibitions, including textile sculpture, video, audio, photography, and painting can be found in rooms surrounding open-air courtyards. Its a very nice atmosphere. Many of the works had a focus on environmental justice and awareness. The museum appears to be open Monday through Saturday from 9am-1:30pm with additional hours from 3-6:30pm on week days. For more recommendations on what to do and where to eat in Cuenca, find our blog posts by searching: "Intentional Travelers Cuenca"
MoreGreat place to visit while in Cuenca
MoreClosed for remodeling
You need to visit..
Awesome slice of Ecuadorian art. Many different mediums placed in a unique viewing experience. Engaging and fun museum.
MoreSuper!!!!!!!!
Nice place to appreciate the arts. They hav e a “create your own” wall room which is very interesante.
MoreAwesome place!
Simply put, this place is a gem! The building itself is lovely to walk through and the curators and planners have made brilliant use of the space to showcase an excellent variety of high quality art in a variety of media. Highly recommended. I’ll be back many times.
MoreWe visited this museum several years ago, and its a beautiful little museum! We returned today especially for
MoreLove the neighborhood. Easy access.
Interesting.
Closed for remodeling. No community notice, just a sign on door.
Peaceful and varried displays.
I loved the building, the art was modern, nuff said.
The current exhibit is not very engaging. In fact, the architecture of the colonial building was by far the most interesting part of our visit.
MoreMixed reviews about this museum. There’s tons to see and think about when visiting this place. Some things one would never think of as art. They have many exhibitions from different artists from over the world. The entrance is free, just have to sign in.
MoreJust really wasnt for me. The space, a former prison and rehab facility among other things in its long history, somehow feels alternately too wide open and also claustrophobic. The collection, while maybe to some peoples tastes, didnt strike me as particularly interesting.$1 suggested entry donation is fair, and wandering around the museum took about an hour.
MoreInteresting building that houses interesting modern art from local artists. Formally a prison, the art is spread out in many rooms, that were formally prison cells. It has a nice sculpture garden to sit in. And is located next to a surprisingly nice plaza, with a variety of stores and restaurants.
MoreHad a very nice visit. No set price, they accept donations.
A delightful free experience in the center of Cuenca. Sign in and give your passport number. A guide offered and declined. The gardens lovely, birds were happily singing in the mist. At least 19th century, the style was colonial with simplicity. A former hospital? Many small galleries showing local artists. The reaccuring theme was loss of heritage and culture. The art amazing. High quality.Human spirit realized in earthly utensils.
MoreIt is very nice that there is no entrance fee for this museum. But unfortunately there werent many exhibitions at the time I met this place. I would have loved some kind of an overview what expositions taking place at the museum at the moment. Without something like that it was more wandering around and hoping that some of the rooms contain art
MoreI liked the architecture of this old building
So nice!
This modern art museum made no sense to me. There wasnt any art to speak of. The structure was pretty though. As with lots of things in Cuenca, there was work being done, so Im optimistic...
MoreWalked there on a Friday around 11am only to be told by a grumpy security guard that its. It open???
MoreWe went there 3 times in 3 days and its always closed ! 8-(
This is mixed bag in my book. There are some great exhibits. Then there are the exhibits that look like a homeless person was rooting through the garbage. But I guess that is modern art for you. Does not make the best use the scale space. Lots of empty rooms. You can move through the museum pretty quickly.
MoreA great museum
Plenty to see, odd hours.
There were very few pieces when I visited. And what there was, was not very interesting. At least it is free.
