Calle 63 506, Centro, 97000 Mérida, Yuc., Mexico, Izamal
This stately, restored 16th century house-turned-musuem features art exhibitions & cultural events.
Only the facade remains true. The inside is pretty much a modern building that houses historical artifacts mostly relevant to the region. A visit to this museum will be quick, but I think it’s ok to miss it if you don’t have enough time in your schedule.
Its for free! Nice window in the past of Merida.
Not much to seeNo guidesIts also a bank branchSecurity personnel rude
Beautiful
One of the first places I saw in Merida. To visit, the tour is well thought and you can enjoy original furniture
Beautiful museum with original furniture and decor.
If you are staying in Merida for a couple of days and you have 30 min free , this is something you shouldnt miss, you would be able to see how this family used to live and learn their history. There is also a photography exposition at the end that is worth visiting. If you are into photography, there is a beautiful garden where your portraits will look absolutely gorgeous.
This is a 16th century building which has been restored repeatedly and now it is used as a bank, though open to public visit. The architecture is just splendid.
Its a nice place and great that its free entry
Former house of the citys governor, which had to be sold by the family after several generations and is now in possession of the Mexican National Bank. The villa was restored and is now available for public for free. Note the exhibition opens at 11am - before only the bank terminal housed inside is accessable.
Impressive how rich people use to live
A gem in the middle of the city. It reminded me of Hearst Castle in California. Why not 5 stars? Eventhough the museum is free, I felt rushed
Not much of a museum to be honest. It takes about 2 minutes to walk through and has no signs or plaques to describe anything. It is also a bit weird that half of it is now a bank. But hey, its free I guess and its quite lovely to look at for 5 minutes if youre passing by.
Intersting. In every room you can stay only 5 minutes.
Complete misunderstanding. The visit took more less 10 minutes. There was a guy who didnt let us watch the exhibition in our own time - he was hurrying up those who wanted to take a closer look or shouting at those who were less interested in that certain place and wanted to move on.And children under 8y.o. must be carried by the hand by the parent even if they are walking calmly and not touching anything. 🤦🤦🤦If not the second part of the exhibition (the art partit would have been a total waste of time.
You have to wait and be led around in small groups. It took less than ten minutes, because the guy taking the group around kept everyone moving way too fast."Hola, hola, hola".It is pretty much impossible to appreciate the exhibits at this speed.Disappointed.But it was free.
Cool art to check out if you have some down time in Merida! Also free & doesn’t take up too much time.
This is a must visit for anyone visit the city. It is a fun and great morning activity.
Cool architecture
Dont miss this museum, with beautifully preserved interiors and its dramatic facade. On a very warm day it is a great place to walk in the cool interior and learn about its rich history.
📝Free tour Tuesday – Sat 11:00 – 13:00 | Sun: 11:00Built between 1542 and 1549, it showcases four permanent rooms; the office, living room, bedroom and dining room all furnished showing the style of those centuries. There are also three temporary exhibition halls that change. They need storage lockers however - because I didnt feel comfortable leaving my backpack with everything in it just at the front of the office and had to return at a later date without it.
First of all, this place has a long interesting history. That alone should be enough for you to visit. My favorite part the entire place was the incredibly detailed painted animal exhibit. This was awe inspiring! The remainder of the tour was a self guided journey through the house showcasing room after room of antiques. This is the area that I lost interest quickly.I wish the staff had given better guidance and they could use some training on their customer service skills. I wouldn’t return but it was worth seeing.
I really liked this attraction, it has an impressive history and is one of the main attractions of Merida
This is my favorite museum in Merida. Its the original House of the conqueror of the Mayan city of tho, later called Merida. Don Montejo lived in the colonial House with his family and brought a lot of different objects from all around the globe. In here you can find the original arrangements of the principal rooms of the house, and on the back you can find two different galleries with local art or crafts expositions and a bank.
Beautiful museum, very entertaining and excited to have known a little about the life that the ancient conquerors of Yucatan led. The place is very well set towards the old times, the furniture and the decoration of the house very well maintained. I really liked the fact that access is free, because I think it is an effort made by the inhabitants of Merida to make their history and culture known and prevent them from being lost
A great museum to see how the elite used to live in Merida. They have great air conditioning and it’s free! I highly recommend.
ITS FREE. Not a bad museum and again, it would be much better if there is English subtitle bc there are many english speaking visitors
Free entry. Cool little inside to the quality of life for rich families during the colonial times. Explanations in English.
Beautiful period furniture and other exhibits.
Beautifully preserved and ornate look at the history of the Montejo uprising. Free admission and self-guided tour through the Montejo house. Take time to notice the large mural off the dining room and ask someone about the story behind the Shield of Montejo and the leopard skinned guards above the door. Both Montejo and son are standing on the heads of Mayan men whom they overpowered and integrated Aztec blood with their uprising. Sad and haunted history.
This place is truly breathtaking. The gorgeous entry is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Entry is free and they offer guided tours for those interested in the history of the house. If you’re more interested in photos i would recommend doing a self guided tour as it was a bit tricky to get decent photos when you’re crammed in a room full of other tourists. Bonus: it’s air conditioned!
Small museum in the center of Merida, entrance is free and there are a few rooms to visit.
It is ok to see things and objects tipical of Merida and the life of this epoque, with and little and cosy garden
Great museum in center of Merida, across main square and park. If you love hispano architecture and style its place for you. You can see many different rooms with antiques and all is for free! Must visit in Merida!
Very nice and small museum, but worth a visit. Free admission.
Beautiful Museum in the House built by the Conquistador of Yucatan and founder of Merida: Don Francisco de Montejo. Today is a gorgeous Museum displaying an elegant furniture brought by its famous and wealthy tenants over the past centuries. Today is part of the Banamex Banking Foundation, it houses a full service bank as well as the Museum. Theres free guided tours in Spanish. Well worth the visit, right in the heart of Meridas main square.
Its free. If you see a line, its for using the ATMs. (Most of the building is converted to a bank now).Just go in and check your bags. The guards were super sweet and helpful. The art was a great collection and it was cool to learn a little about the colonialist history by walking through the home.
Very nice
Great location, good history and properly maintained. Staff is very good and courteous and best of all its Free!Citibank/Banamex right next to them so it was very convenient
A beautifully restored colonial mansion built during the viceroyalty and occupied by generations of the Montejo family. The three rooms facing the Plaza Grande are filled with beautiful Victorian antiques, as is the formal dining room across the courtyard. The other rooms serve as galleries for temporary art exhibitions. The museum is free to visit and is a welcome respite from the sweltering streets.
Very cool example of what life for the very rich was like in Merida a 100 years ago. Well worth the visit
Excellent museum, with free entry! My wife and I were blown away with how impressive this old mansion turned museum is. Part of the mansion is set up in the way it would have looked like when it was a residence, and the other part is an art exhibit. I have already been a couple of times in the last month, and I plan on going back more. The current exhibit featuring Jorge Maríns bronze figures are amazing, its a beautiful modern take on such an ancient medium.
Quite nice colonial house, free to visit. Three rooms can be visited, with 19th century Victorian furniture and glassware on display. Diagrams are provided which explain what came from where. Neat short stop from the Grand plaza. Was originally a soldier barracks, but was inhabitated by the Montejo family later
Nice and small museum to get an idea of the inside of casas! Also there was a great photography exhibition on the top floor. And it was free. So why not go!?
Small museum with a great outer facade. See some of Montejos opulence in comparison to the Mayans. Also some great photo exhibitions at the moment. All free.
Free and beautiful house! Some very strange art on display! Don’t know if it is permanent though, very interesting place!
Very interesting museo and casa. Free entrance. The visit is about 30 min.
Vigilancia excesiva y desagradable. Female guards watching you like hawks, controlling every step you take. Quite unpleasant.
Excellent small museum. Lots of house hold art facts. Worth stopping in. Free mission.
The facade of this building is really impressive, such beautiful detail. I didnt go inside but I spent quite sometime admiring the sculptures on the outside.
