32 Bd Carde, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Abidjan
Large state civilisation & craft museum with over 10,000 carvings, ceramics, statues & artworks.
The entrance is 1000fcfa , the only place you are allowed to take pictures is at the front desk anything after that is prohibited , the guide only speak French so if you dont understand french there are no translator in sight .
Quite a small museum but well worth the visit. One can learn about the Ivorians and their interesting culture. It is divided into three different rooms, which showcase items such as instruments, types of houses around the country, types of coins used throughout time, among other items. These rooms connect to the lobby, where we can see several items in cases, an elephant skull and femur, and, on the walls, several Ivorian proverbs, which, as explained on the boards, are teachings that are passed on from generation to generation. One is not allowed to take pictures of the items, but it is fine of the boards. All labeling and texts are unfortunately only in french. I consider that the labeling should always include the date if the item because it helps visitors understand what it is, and where and when it was used. Some of the items are very frail and are starting to show some wear; these need to be repaired so they can live on for future generations.
The musée des civilisations is agreat place. Great historical collections in Abidjan. Had a chance to see traditional stuff and travel down the cultural lanes of different communities and clans of Ivory Coast.
Very good museum. I enjoyed seeing proverbs from the various ethnic groups of Cote DIvoire !
I went there during the week and paid for a guided tour. It was very instructuonal and just a good time all around. I recommend if you are interested in the cultures of Ivory Coast
Good
A nice local museum focusing on the cultural groups of the surrounding area. Unfortunately you are not allowed to take photographs of the artifacts, but overall worth a visit if you are visiting. Finally make sure that you bring cash when you visit, credit is not available on location.
Nice place
The museum is an interesting place to visit while in Abidjan. Theres a limited but rich history of the countrys culture. Its small and quiet, so you can easily end your tour withing 15 minutes. It wasnt a very interesting experience, but its a good distraction if youre in Plateau and have some time to kill.I was surprised that there were no animal remains, despite it being an African country (in which animals played a big role); except for the single elephant skull and a few bones.
Interesting but very small museum.
+Worth to visit. Near to St.Paul Cathedral Price for adult 2000cfa. 1.5h to see all.-Stuff warned that its not allowed to make photos even on smartphone.
Very Good
Very good
It was closed on a Saturday afternoon. Security guard said we couldn’t go in.
awesome croissants
Amazing
I believe the museum might have a lot to offer but i unfortunately couldnt visit because the workers are on strike and since there was no notice saying that in english I went there twice :-(
Its a really cool but small museum.
Basic , african tribal
When I got to this place, I was informed the museum was under renovation. I was slightly dismayed as I came a long distance just to see this place. My French isnt so good so it took a while for me to understand what was been said.Fortunately I was directed to one of the staff and not only did he communicate in English he also offered to show me around the Museum.Indeed it was a pleasant visit and Im glad I came.Thank you.
Nice but need to improve
Is closed for redevelopment until November 2019
Closed for renovation, not clear when will be open again
interesting, this is the history.
Cool
Very small museum with some traditional things and many things about our history but its not enough for this country. Our country is one with best histories in Africa but with relate a small part of these histories.
Cool little museum with cool masks.
Cool
Beautiful
It was very enriching
foreigners entry fee is 2000. Can not take pictures inside except the 2 big elephant teeth. outside theres a small gift shop. it has parking lot inside.
This place is small.
Good!
I like this place but I would love it if it had enough traditional and local object. I think it doesnt represent enough the national heritage
Cool
Very small museum, cool knowledgeable guides that seem to master a lot of the countries historic, traditional and mythological stories. In an hour you can see most part of it. There is a little shop outside of the museum where you can buy some artifacts that are also available elsewhere at lesser price.
Very interesting, I enjoyed it
It was nice. The museum has a lot to offer in cultural history and I was happy to see them opened on a Sunday.
It ok
I loved visiting this museum. I wish I couldve taken pictures. Nevertheless, our tour guide, William Dayo, was very well versed in each of the exhibits. It was really nice to have someone with us who gave us in depth information on what we were viewing. It gave us a deeper understanding and appreciation for each of the artifacts.
Cool
Good food
This museum is not from the biggest. Entry is just 2000 CFA. There are 3 small exhibitions inside, visiting time is about 30 minutes to 1 hour. They don’t have Big number of exponates But is worth to visit. Shows the history of civilisations settled in Ivory Coast.
Definetly worth the visit! Really great art!
This museum continues the tradition of equating Western African culture and history mainly with masks (sarcasm). It could almost be interchangeable with the museums in Dakar and Bamako except they both have a second floor dedicated to textiles.Granted, the masks are interesting and high quality, but they are completely decontextualized with cryptic captions an little explanation tying anything together. There is one table showing the evolution of money that was nice. Its one of the few times I wished there was a museum gift shop with some books.Weirdly they dont allow photography either, as if history should be hidden.Avoid the restaurant out back it is way overpriced and there are better maquis around.
It was an amazing experience!!!
Really nice place
Very interesting stories... So worth the visit. Get a guide if you can.
Still closed (December 29th 2016)
A good step into the direction of conservation of cultural heritage, but poorly carried out. The explicits have no description or dating on them, the tour guide is not so sure either.
