متحف البريد المركزي، يتوسط مبنى «البريد العام»، كما كان يسمى في الحقبة الاستعمارية الفرنسية، أرقى أحياء العاصمة الجزائرية، ليلتقي عنده شارعا الشهيدين "العربي بن مهيدي" و"ديدوش مراد"، منفتحاً على حديقة قصر الحكومة الواسعة والتي تنحدر بأشجارها الباسقة إلى أسفل الجبل لتلامس جذورها مياه البحر الأبيض المتوسط.

متحف البريد المركزي[1]، يتوسط مبنى «البريد العام»، كما كان يسمى في الحقبة الاستعمارية الفرنسية، أرقى أحياء العاصمة الجزائرية، ليلتقي عنده شارعا الشهيدين "العربي بن مهيدي" و"ديدوش مراد" (إيزلي وميشلي سابقاً)، منفتحاً على حديقة قصر الحكومة الواسعة والتي تنحدر بأشجارها الباسقة إلى أسفل الجبل لتلامس جذورها مياه البحر الأبيض المتوسط.تم الشروع في بناء البريد العام على هيئة قصر فاخر عام 1910 وتم إكمال تشييده بعد ثلاث سنوات قضاها البناؤون والمعماريون في تنسيق ردهات المبنى وأعمدته وأسقفه التي تتألق حاملة زخرفاً عربياً أندلسياً راقياً، ليتحول مبنى البريد المركزي رويداً رويداً إلى تحفة معمارية متفردة.هندسته المعمارية تنبض بدقات قلب المدينة حيث استلهم المهندس «ماريوس تودوارد» المعمار العربي الإسلامي في تشييد هذا القصر الأنيق، كانت الفكرة تنطلق من محاولة الحاكم العام للجزائر في بداية القرن العشرين «شارل جونار» توطين المباني لجعلها جسر عبور إلى قلوب الجزائريين الذين كانوا ينفرون من التعاطي مع الإدارة الاستعمارية بمبانيها الفكتورية ذات الطراز الأوروبي الصرف.يُذكر أن جونار شجّع إحياء فن العمارة الإسلامية، والتقرّب من طبقة المثقفين التقليديين، وشجعهم على القيام بمهمتهم القديمة، كإقامة الدروس في المساجد ونحوها، أشرف جونار على فتح المدرسة الثعالبية سنة 1904م، بجوار مقام "عبد الرحمن الثعالبي" في حي القصبة بالعاصمة الجزائرية، واستهدى إلى فكرة تشييد مبان على شكل قصور ذات طراز معماري أندلسي ومغاربي لعله من خلال ذلك يجد طريقاً إلى قلوب «الأهالي»، وهو النعت الذي كان يطلق على السكان الأصليين في العهد الاستعماري للجزائر والذي امتد لقرن وواحد وثلاثين سنة كاستعمار استيطاني كامل الأركان والأوصاف، حينها شيدت بعض مبان تخدم فكرة التقرب من الأهالي باستنباط المعمار المحلي والإسلامي مثل مبنى المحافظة (الولاية حالياًالواقعة في واجهة البحر أو بعض المدارس المتناثرة هنا وهناك في أحياء الجزائر العاصمة المختلفة.استُعمل مبنى البريد المركزي في كل أنواع الخدمات البريدية والمالية منذ افتتاحه في سنة 1913، فكان قبلة لكل من كان يريد أن يبعث برسالة أو طرد أو برقية أو يستقبل مثيلاتها، كما كان محجاً مع تطور الزمن لدفع فواتير الهاتف أو تخليص المعاملات البريدية المختلفة من برق وفاكس وتلكس أو أي معاملات مالية إذ استعمل المقر لسنوات طويلة لتسيير الحسابات الجارية للموظفين سواء في إيداع أموالهم أو في سحب رواتبهم.

Such a beautiful place with great architecture all around it. Bit the stores and restaurants around it are extremely expensive, would not recommend eating there.

Histoire de La Grande Poste dAlgerLa grande poste dAlger est une construction de type néo-mauresque, œuvre de larchitecte Voinot et Tondoire, inaugurée en 1913 !Les architectes Voinot et Tondoire étaient chargés de réaliser ce monument dédié exclusivement aux PTT (Poste, Télégraphe et Téléphone), puissante institution du service public durant l’époque colonial Français. Cette nouvelle poste devait remplacer l’ancienne située rue de Strasbourg, devenue trop exiguë pour une ville en constante expansion !Voinot et Tondoire ont réalisé une magnifique œuvre d’art.... Avec sa grande coupole et ses deux faux minarets, la Grande-Poste est d’une beauté saisissante. La façade principale est ornée de trois arceaux et d’une galerie supérieure à colonnes jumelées. Un large escalier de marbre couleur ambre permet d’accéder sur le parvis qui donne sur trois portes monumentales taillées dans du bois précieux. A l’intérieur, le précieux est conjugué à toutes les formes. Avec ses faïences, arcs, coupoles, stalactites et stuc ciselé, le plafond de la salle principale est un joyau architectural. Les plans ont été tracés par les Européens mais l’essentielle de la main-dœuvre était Algérienne et Marocaine. Certains ouvriers y laisseront la vie...Jonnart a tenu à marquer les lieux de son "empreinte"... (La hauteur de la construction qui a embelli l’œuvre avait été choisie par le gouverneur général Jonnartpeut-on lire dans des cartouches polychromes !!La religion est également très présente dans ce décor oriental à travers les inscriptions suivantes : “Dieu est vainqueur”, “Le pouvoir éternel Lui appartient” ou encore “Il n’y a de puissant que Dieu”...Dans leur œuvre, Voinot et Tondoire ont su allier art, spiritualité et fonctionnalité. Car la Grande-Poste est avant tout un bureau de poste qui offre une multitude de services à la pointe de la technologie du début du XXe siècle !Sur le plan politique et culturel, le résultat n’est pas fameux. Dans l’esprit de l’administration coloniale, l’adoption du style néo-mauresque devait être un facteur de rapprochement avec la communauté musulmane. Mais cela n’aura finalement aucun effet sur le quotidien des “indigènes”, devenus étrangers dans leur propre pays...A titre d’exemple, la quasi-totalité des employés de la Grande-Poste étaient Européens. Seuls deux emplois étaient ouverts aux Algériens : manutentionnaire ou télégraphiste !

If its your first time in Algiers, then this is a good opportunity to visit that iconic historical building located in the middle of the capital. Plenty shops and cafés in here. Gardens and highlights of touristic spots are just nearby.

It is so known landmark at the whole Algiers city, very amazing architecture style, nowadays, it is one of peaceful revolution symbols of Algerian people where the Algerian going out in streets all over the capital manifesting against the state corruptions.
