Viewed Beautiful painting, beautiful house, beautiful secene.
After having the pleasure of meeting Lady Lindsay, author of Picnic at Hanging Rock, many years ago, it was just also a pleasure to walk around their house and garden (artist husband Sir Daryl Lindsay)The house left to the National Trust, intimate and nostalgic.National treasures both
MoreIf the walls could speak - they would regale interesting stories of both owners (reknowned artist Sir Daryl Lindsay & author wife Joan Lindsay& Hollywood superstars like Gone With the Wind Vivienne Leigh & partner Laurence Olivier. The only visitors room downstairs has hosted "who is who" of the artistic, literary & other worlds - you will hear the engrossing anecdotes from the Heritage Trust volunteer guides. This lovely 1926 US Colonial style home re-opened recently on 10/4/22 after being closed during Melbs interminable lockdowns. Note: only open every 2nd Sun of the month. Website lists entry fees (free for members& tour times. Join one of the 30-45 mins guided tours at various intervals run by knowledgeable, friendly volunteers. You will be given footwear covers to preserve carpeting or you can go in barefoot which I did.The house & contents are originals - frozen in time since Joan Lindsays passing in Dec 1984! Garden is not extensive - the original vast acreage has been subdivided. It is a lovely setting amongst gum trees & high hedges. 1 hour + is enough to view all. Did see some having a picnic on the grounds afterwards.Free parking entry is just past the roundabout corner of McClleland & Golf Links Rd. Walk up the hill to get to side entry meet & greet area. Probably difficult to get upstairs or navigate steps into the main entry in wheelchair - do enquire ahead. The original smaller 1800s cottage annexe previously built by colonial artist McCubbin is the official art studio. There are original paintings by Daryl Lindsay as well as those gifted by other artists. Joan Lindsay was the famed writer of Picnic at Hanging Rock & Time Without Clocks. Absolutely delightful vintage home to visit👍🏼👌🏽

Miranda, are you here?
A beautiful home. Great but not grand. Wonderful that things and personal items have been left as they were. Some wonderful art works on display. It deserves more attention as the home of two notable Australians. A talented artist and renowned author of picnic at hanging rock.
MoreI visited on Sunday and loved it as I have in the past. My favourite Trust property due to its casual elegance, artwotks and the friendly guided tour thst is included in the small admission fee. Good coffee too😉!
MoreDelightful house and gardens; the former home of the artist Sir Daryl Lindsay and author Joan Lindsay. The volunteer guides gave a lively and interesting background to their lives and work in this house.
MoreMy dad was the gardner there for 30 years I spent my childhood playing and exploring the grounds. I learnt to whistle under the old water tower at the back of the house. My sister was married there, it is one of the most beautiful places.
