18 St Nicholas St, Bristol BS1 1UB, Nailsea
Warm, 1920s-themed British steakhouse with wood panelling serving chops, seafood, wine & cocktails.
The staff were brilliant, really friendly and there when you needed them. All the food was absolutely delicious. But, say upstairs (rather then in the basementlacked atmosphere, we didn’t really get the 1920s feeling. And, the side portions were inadequate, particularly the chips where you only get 5 or 6 chips, it works out at over 60 pence a chip!We had an early sitting for dinner, so were on to pudding by 9pm but by that point they’d run out of pretty much every pudding, they didn’t even bother bring the menu as they had two left of one pudding and ice cream!
Great location, dining experience, fantastic food and super friendly staff.Only criticism, dessert options could be more varied but maybe people cant usually fit one in so theres no need 😆
I went to this restaurant at lunchtime with my two Sons. Apart from the great decor, the staff were exceptionally welcoming and friendly. It is within the old part of Bristol which adds to its charm. Our waiter was charming, genuinely friendly and super helpful. The food was exceptional. The meat melts in the mouth. I had the fillet and my Sons shared the Chateaubriand. They loved the experience of the hot stones and we all agreed it was the best meal we’d ever had. Superb.
So amazing!FoodAromaExperienceCould not beat it.Only thing stopping a well deserved 5 stars was having a trainee waiter cutting our cote de bouf on our 4 year anniversary. Not discriminating against new employees haha but a cut of the steak fell and the cuts were not very equal/consistent.This did not ruin our amazing experience though as you gotta learn sometime!
Food was amazing! Best steak I had so far and the service was great 👍 service charge is a bit pricey though and I wish they can accommodate bigger groups. We tried booking a group of 10 people, unfortunately they can only accommodate max of 6.
IncredibleBrill idea had lots of fun would definitely come again
The model (of cooking your own meat on hot stonesis flawed. Steak needs a constant very high heat which the stones dont provide. The Ox remains the best steakhouse in Bristol.Their sister bar The Library is cool though
My boyfriend has a stomach bug and the woman on the phone told me she didn’t believe he was sick and would still be charging £40 for the cancellation. I’d like to know when your staff got their medical degrees. Extremely rude over the phone, wouldn’t recommend unless you know you’ll be sick at least 24 hours in advance.
The restaurant seems to operate a policy whereby they attempt to extract a tip from you on top of a service charge. Service charge is added to your bill automatically, they then attempt to get a tip added on the card machine. If you are not paying attention youll end up tipping twice. Pretty underhand tactics. Be careful and aware.
Excellent place for the best steak around. We travel 70 miles each way to come here. Been before too. Great steak, very helpful and kind staff who male it fun, amazing experience of cooking your own steak on a hot plate with dipping butters. Will be back.
Wow, what an amazing place, my wife and I went to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and were met with warm hospitable staff. The food was absolutely fantastic, the best steak I have ever had, the hot stone cooking was brilliant. Highly recommended place to go with an amazing atmosphere.
Whats better than a well cooked steak? A steak freshly cooked exactly how you like it from one mouthful to the next! Its a fun dining experience with some superb food.
Took my dad there as it was his birthday and I couldnt have picked a better venue, we had Danielle as our waitress and she was incredibly friendly and inviting, the food was amazing from starter to finish and the atmosphere was perfect, its very clear the design of everything has been carefully thought about to give the best exeperiecne. would recommend for anyone looking for a meal out.
We had ribeye steak.I am not a fan of the hot plate procedure. However they did everything by the book. The butters were also excellent.Really good experience.
Would highly recommend as a fun dining experience on a hot stone! Shared a chateaubriand between the two of us, which was more than enough with the chips included. The iced tea was also lovely, though its very sweet so brace yourself. Service was very nice, attentive and informative!
I am so so surprised by how tasty the food is. The serving is absolutely brilliant. We had Tom as the main waiter which is just a lovely gentleman, but all the other waiters have paid attention to us and took care to make us have a great experience, which we had indeed!I am definitely recommending this place to anyone visiting Bristol or if you just want to have a special date night. There is a great value for money.
Went to Mugshot for a Birthday meal. All of the staff were friendly and very helpful with telling us about the different menu options. Food was absolutely delicious - one of the best steaks Ive ever had (and thankfully I didnt ruin it when cooking it on the hot plate! The butters that came with the steak were very flavoursome, and the sauces were the perfect accompaniment.Highly recommend for a great meal out, in a quirky environment and with some of the loveliest staff Ive ever met. Thanks for a great meal !
Phenomenal ❤️Went for my partners birthday and couldnt fault a single thing. From the moment we arrived , trough out dinner, till we left, Absolutely fantastic.Great atmosphere ✅️Delicious food✅️Outstanding service✅️We had Tom as our waiter and that, without a doubt made our night so much special!!Tom guided us though the menu and all the process with great knowledge and awesome suggestions. We started with the pork belly bites and we werent disappointed!! What a burst of flavour!! Totally recommend them, although Im sure the camembert would also had been on point 👌My parter had the fillet and I went with the ribeye, both of great quality. The hot stone they bring to the table for you to cook the steak to your own preference..come on! What a touch❤️In all a amazing (newexperience! And tom will make you feel like you are the only guest on the room.Thank you for a fantastic night!!We will without a doubt be coming back!
Obviously not the cheapest place to eat but I can safely say the prices are justified. Had a great lunch time experience, staff were very professional yet personable. If youre thinking of taking someone out or meeting for lunch etc, couldnt recommend Mugshot highly enough.Keep in mind prices are inline with the level of service and food, yes £30 for a steak seems high depending on how you usually dine, I certainly thought that was going to be hard to justify, I was however pleasantly surprised and very happy with what I got for my money. Definitely going again.
Absolutely fabulous, the decor is very alternative, the food and service was excellent. Price was reasonable for what we had ,good lager and a nice selection of wines and spirits. Good toilet facilities very clean. Not wholly accessible if you are wheelchair bound but can accommodate you on the first floor but would be advisable to book well in advance. I will certainly be going again
One of the best steaks what we ever eat! beautiful service 👍
We dined at Mugshot on a Sunday evening as a party of 5. From the get go staff were welcoming and attentive, being greeted by the owner was a nice touch. The menu was explained in great detail by our friendly waitress, incudling the sourcing of the beef for our steaks. Drinks orders were fulfilled quickly with empty glasses also being removed from the table in sort order. This attention to detail was appreciated by the table. The starters were exceptional, with the mushrooms on toast being our personal favourite.Upon arrival of the main course there was palpable excitement and the steaks certainly did not disappoint. The steaks were so tender and juicy I found myself neglecting the delcious sauces! The side dishes were also fantastic and it was nice that these were not simply an afterthought. The one minor blip on the meal was an incorrect side dish being delivered to the table. However, once this was flagged to our waitress this was corrected quickly. In summary, the food was fantastic and the exceptional service contributed to our enjoyment of what was a very special evening and we will certainly return.
The best food I have eaten in a long time. I would highly recommend to anyone. The baked camembert was outstanding. We shared lamb and steak for main and it was excellent even my part-time veggie partner got involved.
Absolutely beautiful place with superb service!! Went for my partners birthday and we were both very please we chose this location for for the occasion. The food is absolutely beautiful and the staff were all so lovely! Will definitely be returning!!
An amazing experience!Great steak, great atmosphere and overall venue setting! The customer service is equally impressive! Some of the best steak around!Check out @Bristolfooddude on insta for more recommendations
First visit to Mugshot and the food was every bit as awesome as we’d heard! What really made the experience special though were the amazing staff. So friendly, really attentive and nothing was too much trouble. We only caught the name of our waiter Andy but he and the guy with the impressive beard who greeted us couldn’t have been nicer! They seemed to genuinely care that we enjoyed our experience and we really did. Thanks, have been singing your praises and will definitely be back.
What a fantastic meal! This is something as far as I know pretty unique within Bristol and it delivers 100%. Can’t give much a review of how well the steaks were cooked as that was all down to me, but the meat is excellent quality and once I nailed the hot stone timings it was like butter! Really nice and creative cocktails too, came here for my birthday and I’ll definitely be here again.
Went for birthday treat was so much more than l expected. Starters were delicious. Steak was so nice and tender. Butters and sauces lovely.
Comfortably what can only be described as the best steak eating experience weve ever had. Highly recommend. Atmosphere is gloriously 1920s coupled with subtle modern touches and a truly delightful, relaxed place to be, the service was excellent, attentive, in-keeping with the theme and slick, special thanks to Jamie who certainly completed the dinner. Food was simply sublime, drinks selection varied and delicious. Will be visiting again.
Came here for food before going to Bristol Hippodrome for a show. The decor in the reatuarant is lovely. It felt very warm and inviting. The staff there were brilliant and very friendly. The best part about it though is the amazing quality of the food. We had a sharing porterhouse (T-boneand it was delicious. Unfortunately I only have a picture of it half eaten as we could not wait to get stuck in. The steak was so tender and the flavours from the butters just made it even better. The chips were also very delicious.I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone and I will definitely be returning again.
Very nice place and people.. from when you go in until you leave, everyone make sure you enjoy your experience..Ive booked in advance for celebrate mine and my partner birthday and even the days before they were contacting me to make sure I had everything I needed for the dinner..the food was really good, I forgot to take a picture of the steak, but Ill definitely go back and do it next time😅..
Andy our server was amazing!Genuine and excellent service. Been meaning to come here for a while and was not disappointed.Thank you for a great night.
Nice steak and friendly staff. Beef dripping was the best sauce and lovely to have different butter. I liked the garlic and honey better most
I couldnt decide between Mugshot or the other steak eatery by St. Mary Redcliffe, so I choose this place for the service and the cosy, intimate interior for my husbands birthday. Perfect setting for a small family meal, as we have outgrown cheap and cheerful family pub chains a long time ago (thank goodnessand I wanted something special but not stuffy and pretentious. As the other reviews state, the steak was absolutely heavenly and theres nothing more I can add, except we had the chateaubriand which came recommended by a colleague of mine. All the sauces, butters and sides were as equally delicious and though I knew what to expect from the hotstone, we were glad to have a demonstration from the member of staff when it arrived. Their cocktails were on par with the standard of food and the parmesan and garlic sauce that came with the kids pizza could quite easily be guzzled by the pint.
Amazing steak! Staff are really welcoming and friendly. Service was second to non. Went here for my 30th birthday and I’m glad that we chose here. Great experience and great food! Highly recommend visiting this place. Not too pricey either.
Lovely experience. We really enjoyed the hot stone experience with our steaks something different. Nice ambience a sort of 1920’s theme, staff are lovely. It’s reasonably priced as well. We loved it.
Amazing steak experience at Mugshot! We had the Chateaubriand sharing platter and loved the hot stone feature to cook as you go along to your personal liking.Lots of choices with sauces, butters etc too. Thanks to Elliot for a good personal touch. Will be back when were in Bristol again!
WOW, AMAZING, EXCELLENT and so on......We visited The Library on Tuesday night pre-cocktail drinks before going to the Mugshot Steak restaurant.I dont know where to start. We were greeted after a bookcase opened. The interior decor is out of this world. It is exactly as described by some local reports. All staff are amazing. ADAM AND ZOWIE are fantastic hosts and owners of this amazing place. They worked so hard during lock down last year and opened approximately 5 weeks ago. If you book a table at their equally amazing Mugshot restaurant you will be invited to this mystery location a few doors down. Please visit. You wont be disappointed.ZOWIE and ADAM take the time to chat. I had a little heart to heart with ZOWIE.The cocktails are amazing and are very reasonably priced. They have a Gin distillery downstairs. You are welcome to look around and take photos.Thank you all. We had a lovely time.We will be back.STAY SAFE everyone.Love Cliff and Kerry
Wow, wow, wow, so good I had to say it three times! The evening started with a lovely, friendly greeting from Gabriela, who showed us to the table, introduced our waiters and made us feel soo welcome. We ordered drinks and my Mum said the Australian Shiraz was one of the best shes ever tasted. I had a French 75, which was perfectly made and very tasty. Our fantastic waiter Lucas then explained the menu and how the hot stone works. We were both going to get a ribeye so he suggested the Caveman, which was a sharing option. We went with it and were soo glad we did. He also explained where the meat is sourced, all local and how long its aged etc. Another extra touch that made the evening special. The food came out quite quickly considering it was a large cut. The waiter who brought the steak showed us how best to cut and cook it on the stone and gave advice on how long to cook it each side depending on how you like it cooked. The steak itself was delicious, melt in the mouth good. Definitely up there with the best steaks Ive had. All in all the exceptional service and food made the evening a outstanding experience, one Id recommend to any meat lover. Special mention to Lucas and Gabriela but all the staff that served us where amazing.
More than just a great meal, its an experience! The atmosphere and setting is brilliant, the food amazing. The steak was superb, and the fact you get to finish off cooking it to your taste, is fun. Defo recommend going here. Give it a try, you wont be disappointed...
Weve always considered visiting Mugshot after the many good reviews and recommendations, but were put off slightly by the hot stones, something that weve previously experienced in the past. Also after visiting Pasture, we had no reason to go anywhere else for steak. When Mugshots opened up the Library, we were persuaded to give both a go (steak and cocktails afterwards... why not!)It was nice to hear Mugshots complement Pasture for their steaks, and they were able to explain the differences.Whilst unsure about the hot stones, my wife went for the steak to be served cooked and I went for the hot stone. Got to say, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the hot stone, I went for Rib Eye and Chips, and the wife choose Fillet and cheesy mash, the cheesy mash was much better than the aligot that we had in Little French.Overall, we are 50/50 on whether Mugshot or Pasture, so I would say give both a go, they are both different, but I would be happy to return to Mugshot and recommend this restaurant to friends, overall it was a great evening. We finished the evening in the new Library and got to say, we loved this place and would highly recommend people to try both, absolutely no complaints at all.Would be good to see more varied cocktails on the list, but they have a full bar and the Old Fashioneds were top notch....Also, shout out to all the staff, fantastic service.
I visited their library down the road, they had an exquisite selection of books and unlike most establishments of this type - were warm and not critical of conversation, in fact not a “keep quiet” sign in sight.I particularly enjoyed the London Stock Exchange Official Intelligence- they will certainly be able influencing my investing decisions over the coming quarter. You must check out the basement, and unlike most libraries they have a bar, rather than a vending machine - which I think local authorities across the country should consider adopting.
Excellent! Would highly recommend if you love steak! The steak was some of the best weve had and the service was faultless! (Im from America so my standards of service are very high.We also had cocktails when we were there and they were the best we had this entire weekend! A must visit in Bristol! Thank you! 😊
This place was amazing, I cant put it in any other words, simply amazing. If youre on the fence about booking, dont be, go for it and youll soon be booking a second visit. We had the Sunday lunch when visiting and it was lovely, finishing your meat off to just how you like it is a genius idea (highly recommend the garlic butter option). Finally, a huge shout out to the staff. They were so friendly and helpful. Always on hand to get you new hot plate or a fresh drink.
We had an absolutely amazing meal here. The people waiting on our table were so attentive and patient, the explained everything to us and were really fun, it added so much to the evening. We decided to share a pizza and steak between two, we were very glad we did. The pizzas are incredible and the steak was delicious. Really cool venue downstairs as well
The environment is really nice, good for family party and dating. The music is very chill and joyful! The steak is really delicious especially on the stone and the special sauce. I ordered the fillet with garlic and chive butter, they are all homemade and taste very fresh and creamy. The beef dripping sauce is very special and unique. Also, the steak served with chips which are very yummy! I’m so full at the end of the meal and the price is so reasonable!!Staffs are very friendly and helpful! They always tell you how to cook the steak on the stone and introduce signature dishes!
Very nice food although a little novel with the hot stones for steak. First time I have ever not been asked how I want my steak. I had to get it without the stone so I could have it Cooked for me by the chef rather than do it myself. I like my food cooked for me when eat out. Unfortunately we did have to wait for our table to be ready for over an hour but Im sure thats not normal. The staff were very nice and the atmosphere good. It does get a little hot downstairs especially with all the table top cooking going on. They had a good selection of steak including those to share. All in all a really nice meal. Would eat there again.
Wow! I write a lot of reviews, but this is without question the beat steak restaurant we’ve been to in the UK. We’ve done a lot of the classic London spots, but we had to travel to Bristol to get this experience. The hot lava stone concept is great and the staff were very friendly and welcoming as they talked you through it. Try the honey butter, it’s incredible. Go here.
Wow... just WOW! Mugshot did not disappoint. Mugshot is an independent restaurant which caters to meat lovers, pizza lovers and vegetarians and has a 1920s twist. Me and 2 of my best friends went to Mugshot for dinner and it was literally incredible. It was by far the best steak I have ever eaten. The condiments and sides were AMAZING and it was just a lovely place - I would definitely go back! Still thinking about how good that steak was... literally melt in the mouth! I had the Sirloin Steak (225 gramsserved on a hot plate with garlic butter, honey butter, sweet potato fries peppercorn sauce and mixed leaf parmasan salad - all of that for £22. We tried 2 of their Steak Sauces; Peppercorn & Beef Dripping and oh my gosh both were amazing, I wish I had of tried some more as I bet they are all delicious. My friend had the Porterhouse Steak to himself (800 gramswhich looked incredible and my other friend had the Mad Dog Pizza which looked amazing and she said it tasted like a proper italian pizza and the Garlic & Parmesan pizza dipping sauce she had with the pizza was “banging” if I ever went again I would order that just to dip my chips in! Their drinks are also amazing - especially the cocktails. The staff are all so friendly, welcoming and accommodating and they contributed to our amazing dining experience at Mugshot! They sometimes do specialty steaks too so give them a like on Facebook to make sure you don’t miss out on knowing when they have the steaks in!
Absolutely fantastic from start to finish. The place looks brilliant and the food is even better. My wife had the ribeye and said it was the best steak she has ever had. I had one of the pizzas and it was outstanding. Staff were friendly, cocktails were good and the homemade butters were a highlight (especially the honey butter!I wish I could give this more than 5 stars!
