Mountain Zebra National Park - National park in Umtata, South Africa
Beautiful park. We saw lots of animals. Amazing views. Will definitely go there again
Great camping site. Most enjoyable stay
Spectacular scenery, very nice accommodation options. Also some great picnic sites and facilities. The 4x4 trails are also highly recommended.
Chalets very comfortable and clean.Did not see many animals and birds.
Wonderful! Accommodation perfect. Staff helpful & friendly. And we were lucky to see so many animals in their natural habitat. Everyone must go.
Mountain Zebra National Park visit is always great. This was my second visit. I enjoy the Serenity of the Nature. I love the Natural views, and enjoy seeing the wild animals. Their mischievous monkeys, on the other hand are very interesting 🤔 😏 😉 🤣. Ill definitely visit again💃
Wonderful well maintained roads and great game viewing. Camping facilities clean and neat in spite of renovations of the ablutions. The staff were friendly and helpful. A first time for us to see aardwolf and finished off with an amazing caracal sighting on our way out. Will certainly be back for more
Worth a visit. Wonderful scenic routes. Mountain zebras aplenty with lots of other game. Lions very elusive though..
Superb 4 days, the parks cleanliness was most likely the cleanest I have seen in the world. Very friendly staff, its lovely to be away from the crowds. The scenery is stunning. We saw most of the wildlife in 4 days and would say that 2 to 3 days is better . Its unlikely you will see the cheetah as there is as if 2022 just 4 and only 10 lions but we did not go to see the cats .Highly recommend for all the family. Be aware there is virtually no Internet or mobile signal cafe is limited in choice. The longer hike is very steep and quite challenging especially on the way down, best not attempt unless you are fit and wear good shoes.
What a fantastic experience. We visited after lots of summer rain so the park was lush & green. Amazing chalet. Most beautiful swimming pool.
Fabulous national park with lot of wildlife. Pretty remote and the closest city is Cradock. Recommend spending 2 days to totally experience everything the park offers.
Great experience viewing wild life. An absolute must! Campsite pretty good, however they were still busy with bathroom maintenance. The showers have no doors and no where to put your clothes or hang a towel which is a bit disappointing, I would definitely come back for another visit.
Awesome place to relax go for game drives and view various animals. Spectacular views. Lovely chalets
Brilliant sightings, stunning people, great service and an amazing view from our cottage.
A beautiful park with great accommodation. The scenery and silence is amazing. Mostly buck and zebra.
This must be one of the most hidden perfect national parks in the country. Friendly staff. Plenty of animals. Clean well kept houses. Sparkling, cool pools. A must add bucket list destination without a doubt.
Love the game drives nut also the guided night drive is a must. Room with mountain view
Excellent for a few days beautiful scenery, lots of game especially on the upper loops we had 2 lion sightings 4 females made a kill near main gate then 2 handsome males at Graham’s corner. Accommodation is rustic but well stocked. Very friendly and positive staff from main gate security, reception everyone we meet. Can’t wait to return and hopefully do cheetah tracking.
Beautiful park , lovely campsite , great pools for hot days , the restaurant has delicious cake options , I recommend the cheesecake!!
What a wonderful surprise well worth the trip. The Park is located in a pristine eco friendly Karoo like setting with interesting drives between valley and mountain top scenery. The area has plenty of good bush, trees and streams. The sightings of various antelope and Zebra were plentiful. Other species were a nice surprise. Accommodation in the chalets is excellent by Sanparks standards. Fully self catering, peaceful atmosphere and great outlook. Camping facilities are available together with a shop and restaurant and swimming pool. Great 2 night stay.
This is a SANPARK and one of the best our country has to offer. The park is beautiful in a dramatic and eye-catching way. The family cottages is very neat and clean and worth the stay but all the accommodation the park has to offer is of top quality. The staff and game rangers are very friendly and helpful. The park contains a lot of different animals and there is always some to see on a drive or 4x4 trail.
What a fantastic park!Great wildlife, knowledgeable rangers and lovely facilities.Spend a few days camping or at the chalets and enjoy yourself driving the various routes. If you have a 4x4 and are feeling adventurous, you can tackle some of their tougher routes.Plenty to see and do!
We loved the "forever" views of Mountain Zebra Park.....Feels like you can see til the end of the earth! We had an amazing time and enjoyed every minute of the peace & tranquility of the bush, being quiet with nature and all the animals and the sky was forever beautiful. Lovely clean cottages, would go there again and again! Thank you for a wonderful stay
The chalet we stayed in had the most amazing view and is newly renovated. There are two neat pools and a nice picnic spot in the reserve. The staff is friendly and helpful. I would recommend Mountain Zebra for any person who is on their way on holiday or who just wants a bit of a nature break away.
Went there for camping. Camping site were a bit crowded during December and there were not always hot showers at cold nights. Saw a few animals during drive. There is a petrol pump, gift shop and restaurant and drive over mountaints were beautiful
A lovely piece of nature that is worth visiting. If you are a camper, please note that the campsites are very close to one another. The bathrooms and kitchen is clean and tidy.
Really enjoyed this SANPARKS national park in the Karoo. One of the smaller parks but definitely no less scenic for it. Some of the views from the higher passes are breath taking. Must see for nature lovers when passing through the area.
Accommodation is excellent. Very comfortable. Fire place that shares the living and sleeping space with an air con for hot days. Oversize bathroom and large sleeping room. Very nice view as per the picture provided. Not a very busy park and a mixture of biome that will excite anyone. The Ubejani route was a misty paradise early in the morning while the afternoon brought hot grasslands and grazing animals to life. Loads of small animals like bat eared fox, mongoose, spotted ganette, brown hyenas, secretary birds, carakal were all spotted during the day or on the night drive. Its also a very historic area for the boere war.It has a beautiful well kept series of pools and camping sights that are very enjoyable. Again not very busy so you can relax. My partner and I fought over the placement in rankings of this one over the other parks we have visited and we conclude that this is a firm 2nd to Kruger.Animals can be seen all over, many mongoose families are around. The usual suspects can be found at almost every turn. If you are an avid flora enthusiast then check the time of year you come because they boast a unique and massive conservancy of indigenous wild flowers and bulbs that are magnificent. Loved the stay.Edit: after doing the Roouplaat/Kranskop loop we are in love.. Absolutely beautiful. Excellent facilities.
Best kept secret. Lovely paved caravan stands with electricity, kitchen with fridge, stove and scullery. Coin operated washing machine. Porta potty friendly. Various picnic spots where you can swim, 4x4 trails and other mountain trails accessible to normal vehicles. Ablution block a bit old school. Staff friendly and helpful.
Badly corrugated road to reception.Map is accurateCampsite functional and facilities clean.Lots of monkeys -grabbed our coffee container right in front of us!Do the 2 hikes👍
A park with stunning views with dolerite capped koppies and a wide variety of animals. Also excellent for seeing endemic Karoo birds. We camped but have stayed in lovely cottages. The new ones are even better. The remote mountain cottages would be interesting to stay as they are open to all the animals and require 4x4 to reach. The more interesting drives are 4x4 but all the other roads are sedan friendly
Beautiful fenced picnic spots with a swimming pool. Very clean ablution facilities. Big camping sites with electricity. Bad corrugated entrance road
Fantastic views and vistas.Excellent facilities. Lots of animal life.Restaurant hours of business not customer friendly Restaurant and Shop prices are an insult to customers. The 10 kilometer corrugated gravel road from the main road to reception is a nightmare. Definately not for caravans. The road has not been tarred 40 years after Sanparks took it over.I wont visit this park again.
Visiting during Covid times, and we were pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness and safety measures put in place. Staff were wearing masks, sanitizer available in all public areas. The views are breathtaking. The units are clean and well appointed.
Camp site is 5 stars, but the ablutions are tired and in need of renovations. Hot water in ladies bit scarce at times and park was not full, so unsure if there is not enough geyser capability.Other than that, the park is amazing. We did the cheetah tracking guided drive with Richard and it was legendary! Customer service all round superfriendly and will definitely be back.
Magnificent place. Very comfortable accomodation. Reception was very friendly and efficient. 2 nice mountain walks close to the main camp, well woth doing. Swimming pool at main camp. Game was a bit sparse and distant but thats the name of the game. Spectacular views all over. Generally a pleasant experience.
What a wonderful stay!We stayed in the self catering lodges which were very comfy. No 18 was very private and had a spectacular view.Useful stuff to know:1 There is a petrol pump at reception.2 The shop at reception sells charcoal, wood, firefighters, matches and spices.3 The lodges have dishwashing liquid.4 The roads in the park are 100% fine to drive with a sedan (we drove in a vw polo). There are 4x4 tracks too if that’s your thing.5 If you do stay over the camp gate opens at 07:00 and closes at 18:00.6 There is a restaurant at reception.7 Book your game drives in advance because the spaces get taken quickly.8 Double check your game drive booking. We got double booked and nearly missed out.9 The night drive is something totally different. You will see many nocturnal species including bat eared foxes. We were fortunate to see an aardwolf.10 The cheetah tracking is amazing. Definitely worth it. It’s pretty much a morning game drive while your locating the cheetah, then you walk through the park on foot to get close to where the cheetah are. We viewed cheetah from about 30m away. It was magical.11 The cheetah were so remote and camouflaged that we would never have located them without a tracker. We would never have seen them unless they moved. So if you want to see cheetah then do the cheetah tracking. You’d have to be incredibly lucky to see them otherwise.12 Check the board at reception for recent sightings of game so you know where to look. Drive slowly and look carefully. Ask other people what they’re looking at. It’s how we saw lion.13 Get the mammal and bird checklists at reception.14 Take binoculars / a zoom lens.15 If you can get Richard as your guide on any of the game drives do it. He’s amazing.16 Don’t hide away in a storm. Drive up onto the top parts of the park, the views are spectacular.
We love the place so much, camped 3 NTS there and joined a night drive. Unfortunately we didnt see any lion. The camp site is very dusty, suggest to stay at their lodge.
The roads are so well laid out n almost invisible in this beautiful landscape. We enjoyed the views as much as the game. To top it up, the 4x4 route was an adventure. The accommodation spacious n comfortable with kind n helpful staff.
The drives and the 4x4 trails are exceptional. The campsites are less than ideal being situated right next to each other and could do with another ablution block. The campsite is the only reason this amazing place loses 2 stars, the rest of our experience was incredible.
As the name suggests, there are abundant zebras and other prey such as; impala, ostrich, spring buck, kudu, etc. There are predators like lions, cheetahs, but due to the heat we didnt see any.
Lion, Zebra, Rhino, Kudu, Buffalo etc... all to be seen in this magnificent park with wide open Karoo landscapes unique to this area. The park facilities are all really well maintained and the pricing is extremely fair for a game reserve with this variety. Make sure to take a dip in the rock pool and enjoy a braai at the picknick facilities located close to the center of the park.
We stayed here for 5 nights. Every day was different. Saw loads of animals. Went on an amazing night drive with Richard. Game rangers were informative and willing to point out sightings when they out during the day managing the park. Chalet spacious and comfortable. Game visible from verandah. Two walks available and stunning pool area. Shop not very well stocked but has the basics.
As in all SANParks the tariffs are overrated!Beautiful park and roads well maintained. The 4x4 routes are REALLY 4x4 and for experienced drivers only.Maintenance in our chalet needs serious attention.
A hidden gem. I love this park and have always left with awesome photographs. The mountain huts are first choice... but the camp sites have become a regular fall back. Only had snow once and loved it!!!
This park is a must-visit destination. Although we were there during a drought, the animals were abundant and all looked to be in a healthy condition. The ablution facilities in the camping area is getting on in age but is maintained in good working condition and kept spotless. The picnic site close to Doornhoek is a delight and the pool water is crystal clear. It is worth to note that the 12km gravel road leading to reception is badly rutted and road caravans run the risk of damage if care is not exercised on the road.
This is a beautifull park with vast open spaces and a lot of gravel roads to take you on scenic drives. You can see the animals and birds easily since the bush is not very dense. There are three 4 X 4 routes of which one up the mountain is very challenging. The other two routes is about 3/5 difficulty rating. The Restaurant have basic meals available and can be strongly recommended. A big camping site is available with power and clean ablutions. The chalets have a good view on the mountains and are clean and will ensure a comfortable stay.
One of my favourite parks in the Eastern Cape. Beautiful setting, great 4x4 tracks (no special permit needed for useand wonderful sightings of birds, antelope, bovines, small cats and lions. We stay at the self catering cottages which are well equipped. If you happen to be a vegetarian bring your own food as the restaurant has a very limited choice.
Bitterly cold at times, but well worth it. The chalker had a great fire place & oil heater to help with the cold when in. There was great game viewing & beautiful vistas, along with a quaint affordable restaurant. The staff did loose our night drive booking, but they resolved the issue amicably. The beds & picnic spots were amazing.
This national park is a gem .chalets are spacious and tastefully decorated. the ones on the right hand side of the road have great views into the park. Two walks inside the rest camp give a perspective of the camp from the high surrounding rocks .picnic areas are not as spread out as they should be but i think they are water dependent. staff friendly and eager to please. Lion and different buck species. All in all worth the drive .i will definitely be back
