Mount Takao - Tourist attraction in Odawara, Japan
Standing at only 599m it is not as intensive as Mt. Fuji hike but Great for casual hike and can be used as a starting point for first time hiker aiming to climb Mt. Fuji. The hike itself is very easy but if you are tired or have children with you, there are options of using tram 🚈 or cable car. I went during autumn and the views were simply stunning. During hike, the trees we orange and yellow with a slightest remaining tint of green and at the summit you are bombarded with stunning views of mountain ranges and one a clear day, you can even view Mt. Fuji.
Very cool! You should visit it once!
Nice day trip from Tokyo, 8 km trek return, crowded during fall.
The scenery is really nice in autumn. The hike is family friendly while being not too easy. However the tree line slightly restricts the views. Highly recommend this hike/trail for beginners.
A short train out of Tokyo, and soon you are back to the magic of Nature. A beautiful mountain with many choices to hike to the top, each full of different surprises to discover. To be surrounded by the most unusual trees and the legends of Mountain Tengu, this is an unforgettable experience
Really glad that I made a trip here. Mt Fuji can be seen from afar on a clear day! From the cable car station, it is about 2km walk up. From the chair lift station (mid way between foot and peak), depending on the trail you choose, it is an average of 45 minutes walk up. On a cool day, it is not a problem. There are rest stops which sells drinks, ice cream and dango on the way.
Beautiful mountain thats quite an easy ascend. With the chair lift, you can expect to reach the top within 1h to 1.5h, depending on how long you stop to take pictures. Id recommend for you to go a bit earlier as the trails do not have light after sunset, and it will be pitch dark. We took the number 1 trail up and most attractions were along the way.On the Inariyama trail down, we couldnt see anything as we left the summit during sunset. We had to rely on our phone torchlights and the path was mostly unpaved and quite dangerous at night. Please make sure to leave the summit an hour before sunset to ensure enough time to make it to the bottom. The Inariyama trail took us about 1h to descend, although we were in a hurry. So, if you are not rushing, it might take even longer, so take that into account. The Inariyama trail also does not stop by the cable car or chairlift down, so do take note if you buy a return ticket. The chairlift does not have any barrier to keep you from falling, so be careful of your belongings. Its quite steep at some places too.
We walked all the way to the top and back again and it was very hard work in places because its so steep. It was extremely busy and crowded at the top as lots of people arrived by cable car. However, the views are superb so it was worth the effort.
Super fun experience to hike the trail to the top of the mountain, it become more fun to ride the cable car during descending trip
This was a great family hike. We went up here last weekend (2nd weekend of October), Im sure the timing was perfect in terms of the weather, not too cold and not too hot. The hike was really fun and we got to see another side of "Tokyo" that really charmed us. There are a lot of fun places to visit on the hike up and grab a bite to eat or souvenirs or sight see.Warning...theres a ton of stairs, so if youre looking to burn some real calories this is a great trip but the kids almost died. We took the chair lift up the mountain (which I highly recommendand the cable car down which wasnt as exciting but fun non the less.As you can see in the other reviews its easy to access via train or car. We drove and that may have been a mistake since we left at 10am and the highways were totally packed on the way out. It took more than 2 hours there but coming home it was just over an hour back. So next time well take the train.
I hiked up via trail 1 and came down trail 2. Both are interesting and fun trails with wonderful views. The little cafe on top of the mountain is inexpensive with killer views. Highly recommended!
I hiked trail 1 at Mt. Takao, with my wife and daughter yesterday. We reserved a parking spot at a lot about 20 minute walk from Takaosanguchi station, but when we got to the area, we found an open spot at a lot right next to the station, so we took it. The wasted money was worth it, to avoid schlepping it up and back to a far away lot.We started out mid morning, and went up route 1 in good weather. Route 1 is fairly steep for the first couple of km, but its paved pretty much the whole way, with either slope or stairs, and one section with a kind of wooden deck. Its very different from a typical single-track trail with mud or rocks. It felt more like a sightseeing walk through a beautiful forest, than a typical hike. There are plenty of places to rest with benches or shops, and you can get some delicious food along the way or use the toilet. You can tell why route 1 is so popular in November, because of all the "momiji" maple trees along the route, interspersed with giant cedar trees, including the famous old "takosugi" or octopus cedar. It was still green in Sept.My understanding is, the other trails are more trail-like, like trail 3, the Katsura Woods trail, trail 4, the suspension bridge trail, or trail 6, the Biwa Waterfall trail. Well try one of those next time. Only trails 1 and 6 have toilets. We decided to use the cable car down the last section, and its very steep and scenic. After that we had lunch at one of the soba places near the station, then dropped our stuff off at the car and went for a soak in the onsen on the other side of the train tracks. It was really crowded, but a nice way to work out some of the kinks after our hike. All in all, an enjoyable day suitable for beginners.
We enjoyed the hike the summit was very peaceful and enjoyed leisure time. There is a connection for other mountains from the summit. You can carry lunch and relish or you can buy from there. We took route 1 to ascend and route 6 decent.
Great view at the top and great temples to see. Worth it if you love to hike. Do not however go see a certain waterfall off the paths that they showcase on local maps "close by" (jitai waterfall). It was closed behind a fence when we arrived and it takes you all the way to the base of tge mounten so you are probably gonna have to continue as no sane erson would go back up that route. Wich adds quite some time and a bus ride back to not takeo station and not takaosanguchi from where you started. All i advice the mt.Takao people to do is to put a completion duration for that path and caution not an easy path warning as to not have family with children go that way.
Nice, relatively easy hike, ~3.5km up, with multiple paths. Took route 6 and it was shaded throughout, so it felt cool even on one of the hottest days this summer (34c).Nice view, seats and food stand once you reach the top. Can also take the ropeway up/down for about 500 yen each way.
A little on the touristy side but very beautiful with excellent views from the summit. Also a Japan heritage site and a monkey park.
We went for a casual hike to Takao-san. Super easy to get to via the Keio line from Shinjuku station. Make sure to grab the special/limited express train to get to Takaosanguchi station a little faster. After that its a short (but super crowdedwalk, starting at the right of the station, and up to the cable car station at the base of the mountain. We went up the Inariyama trail which starts to the left of the cable car station entrance. A little steep here and there but a very enjoyable walk up. The summit was very crowded and views were so-so, would advise taking a quick look and then spending more time on the trails. We took the Summit loop (trail 5around the top and descended via Suspension bridge trail (trail 4), did the Kasumidai loop (trail 2and then switched to Biwa waterfall (trail 6for the rest of the way down. These trails avoid the crowds on trails 1 (Omotesandoand 3 (Katsura forest), and are really enjoyable to walk. Going much earlier in the morning is the best way to avoid crowds but there are certainly ways to minimize it by taking some of the harder or steeper routes which shouldnt be a challenge for most people at an average fitness level. Would recommend outdoor/hiking shoes, sneakers are fine as long as you dont mind them getting dirty. At the cable car station at the foot of the mountain, there are a lot of Japanese food stalls, worth trying and to support the local economy. With a nice clean park nearby, its worth enjoying a small bite to eat and a local beer after a nice day out on the trails.
An easy trip from Tokyo, especially rewarding in autumn. But can be very crowded at weekends and during holidays. Expect to wait an hour for the chair-lift.
I decided to climb Mount Takao this past weekend. I had brought a backpack with my overnight gear, camera, laptop, snacks, and a couple of bottles of water. My intention was to put everything except the water in a locker at the train station but all of the lockers were taken. I had no choice but to carry my heavy load with me.You can probably guess what happened. With each ascending step, the backpack felt heavier and heavier. After about an hour, I was sweating profusely and breathing hard. When I stopped to rest and drink some water, I noticed that the lift station for the ropeway was close by.I felt a bit of shame taking the lift down the mountain but I told myself it was better than potentially coming down in an ambulance. There’s a nice onsen next to the Keio station. I relaxed there while waiting for my group to finish the climb.
Beautiful and calm place in the outskirts of Tokyo. Only 50 minutes from Shinjuku in the Keio Line. There are several roads towards the summit:Took route 6 to go up. It is very calm, few people and the path is natural and deep into the nature. The waterfall isn’t big at all, so don’t make up any expectations. The guides say the way up is 90-100 minutes, but you can make it easily in 70-80 minutes.Took route 1 to go down. It is the classic and popular since it’s suppose to be the easiest one and has all the landmarks around. It’s paved and there is obviously more people, but I found it steeper than route 6. Guides say the way down take 70-80 minutes, but it can take only 60 minutes, even stopping to see the temples.
There are several post that you can do. If you go hiking from beginning, it will be free. But if not, just pay for cable car or chair (gondola). After arriving, you can go higher to the monkey 🐒 park. And if need more challenging, you can hike more and will meet several stall that sells foods and souvenirs. Need more? You can hike again, and because I didnt do it until on top of it I dont know whats more. Maybe you can try and challenging by yourself. Preferably go with friends or family to feel more enjoyable. Good luck!
Beautiful place, wonderful views and clear path to the summit. Facilities and refreshment available throughout the climb; all in all, a pleasant hike.
Beautiful, easy mountain to climb, even for children. There is a chair lift or cable car that takes you up a small part of the way then you can walk to the summit. On a clear day you can get a great view of Fuji-san. There are plenty of places to get food, drinks and souvenirs both on the mountain and at the bottom. There’s also a small monkey park and lots of beautiful shrines. The sticky sesame balls are so delicious and only 400¥.
A nice challenging climb. A great place to see the fall foliage. Avoid the crowds if you can by going on a weekday. On the weekends you can wait for up to an hour for any shop or Train/Ropeway up the mountain. But if you can handle the climb go for it!
The hiking was tougher than I expected. It is one of the closest hiking spot from central Tokyo, and a lot of people were here. The view is breathtaking.
Great hiking, two ropeways going both ways, nice walking paths, it gives you a kick of energy spending there couple of hours, easy acces from Hachioji or even from Shinjuku with a train. On the top nice views although to see Fuji san you need a good weather and proper air conditions, try in winter. You can see a Sky Tree in skyline of Tokyo. Many big, old, wonderful trees. Crystal clear water in streams.
Mt Takao is really beautiful and serene. NOTE that walking from the base is actually quite a hike and the lower section of the mountain is VERY steep! Thee is also not much of way to see or do, besides enjoy nature 😉, until you get to where the cable car and chair lift come in. Past that point there are many shops and exciting things to do and see. For those wanting a fun and leisurely hike I would STRONGLY recommend using the cable car. Also, shops start closing down rather early before the cable cars stops running so if youre going down towards sundown make sure to purchase anything you want on the way up.Had a lovely time here, even if I almost died climbing the lower part of the mountain 😅
599.15 M ,Coolest mountain near tokyo, fresh air, hiking, dating, beautiful view ,90 minutes to climb, restaurant have on top ,autumn is the beat time.
I have had several lovely days here, and its a place you can keep coming back to on account of the various trails you can take to the top. Its an all-around beautiful spot. Theres shops on top, with food too, and several different lookout spots to see the surrounding area. You can also take a gondola if you are so inclined. Makes for a great day trip outside of Tokyo, and theres some good onsens in the surrounding area you can go to to relax afterward as well.
I love the atmosphere, it was not crowded at all on Tuesday. The chair lift is a nice attraction. Definitely try the tengu-sweet black bean treat on the cable car upper station. There is a big olympic sign on the top of the mountain.
Very fun day hike. Accessable for all capabilities. Youll see the crowd with a lot of hiking kit, but just comfortable shoes and clothes will get it done.
I love 💗 mountains. Mount Takao is my favorite mountain 🏔 around Tokyo. Easy to access! Beautiful forest! One bad thing is too many visitors during bank off days.
Not soo in height if you are a hiking lover it wont be enough for you so go further upto the Mt. kagenobu you can return back on same day it will take about 2.5 hrs to the Mt.kagenobu from Mt.takao. There is also trail to Mt.jimba which is the farthest one right after Mt.kagenobu you need to stay 1 day to reach that destination.
Good place for trekking.Saw some visitors who hike the mountain every weekend. Quite surprised. While going top, trekked and used chair car while coming down.
Mt. Takao is a beautiful natural hiking site near central Tokyo offering an all-inclusive recreational experience such as stunning views, easy to moderate hiking terrains, various temples and statues, and many more.A network of hiking trails leads up the scenic slopes of the mountain where plenty of sights and fun activities can be found on the way to the summit - monkey park, wildflower garden, and observatory areas overlooking central Tokyo, to mention a few.My friends and I had a great time strolling this amazing park-on-a-mountain! We began by taking the ski (chairlift - admission fee is 490 yen one-way and 950 yen round-trip from the foot of the mountain to the middle observation area. This is a must-try, my friends! The ride was smooth-sailing and the scenery was dazzling! You can take lots of photos at every turn as you gradually ascend. Just be extra careful when using your phones or cameras.Since there are various trails to take going to the summit, we opted for the one passing the suspension bridge. This trail is beautiful and should not be missed! In addition, there are vending machines and food stalls at the middle and summit observation areas, but it’s always good to carry enough supplies as they can be quite costly here. Washrooms are also available everywhere, so you don’t have to worry when nature calls. Also, note that there are no trash bins on Mt. Takao, so you will need to carry your rubbish with you when you descend.Overall, this experience is amazing! I hope that you and your loved ones will also have a great time hiking the beautiful Mt. Takao! 😊🏃♂️
There are so many hikes to choose from to get to the top where you can see Mt.Fuji and the city. You can also ride the gondola or lift which runs all day. It can get busy especially at the very top, but definitely recommend watching the sunset over Fuji.
Mt. Takao is a historically sacred mountain located about 55 km (approx. 34 midue west on the border of Tokyo Prefecture and Kanagawa Prefecture. With numerous temples, shrines, sacred objects including trees, and more with a history dating back more than 1,200 years. There is so much history to learn, deeply held traditions to experience, and an oasis of nature to enjoy all on the footsteps of Tokyo Prefecture. As a sightseeing destination, Mt. Takao is super easy to access, and the climb to the peak is doable without the need for any special hiking or climbing gear. With two sets of cable cars that reach close to the peak, young families with babies, or elderly parents with limited mobility should have no problem accessing the top of the mountain. As a photo shoot location, timing is very important if you want to avoid the crowds. Taking any one of the numerous trails other than Trail No. 1 will allow you to get off of the beaten path and give you closer proximity to natural woodlands, wildlife, and depending on the weather and lighting, you can have access to some beautiful panoramic views of the Tanzawa Mountain Range and the Tokyo metropolis.
Went here mid-November, and i enjoyed the colors of autumn. The waterfalls is a hike down the mountain. Its a steep path so I should have thought twice before i did it. 😅 Nevertheless, it was a cool place for a hike and adventure. My legs gave up on me.
A mountain for the beginner climbers with only 600m height. There are multiple route to the mountain top and each one is beautiful, the top view is quite eye catching as you can see many mountains from there specially mt Fuji on clear sky. Hiking to the top is not that hard,u can rest on the way ,there are many spot to rest. For anyone who wants to have a hiking experience, it is recommended.
Famous day-trip and pilgrimage site easily accessible from Tokyo. Stunning views of Mt. Fuji on a clear day. The path itself is relatively easy but may take a while so make sure to pace yourself. Many hikers frequent the trails and some are very friendly. Beautiful shrines and an eating area at the top.
One of the few mountains within Tokyo suitable for a day trip.45 minute train ride from Shinjuku, Mount Takao is easily accessible. The mountain offers multiple routes including the option of cable car and chair lift. I took route number one with an accent time of 85 minutes including breaks on the way. It is an easy climb but is steep at times and recommend going at an easy pace. Decent was around 90-95 minutes, if you decide to descend after 4:30pm when the sun goes down, be aware that the path is pitch black and limited lighting available. Also path number 1 shares the trail with cars so after 5:30 you need to be careful and stop to let them go past (hence why it takes a little longer). There is a few souvenir shops near the cable lift entrance and some food stalls along the path and when you reach the summit. After your decent, you can relax in the onsen nearby the station before heading home.Overall a great day trip if you’ve never been before.
Best place for one day trip. There are 2 options from Takaosanguchi to the midway to mountain top.Chair lift is fun especially in Autumn and spring when temperature is comfortable.Fuji san view will be spectacular in the evenings.
Technically still in Tokyo area, Mount Takao is provides nature getaway just withing 1 hr away from Tokyo central area.Easy track hikes or cables, and multiple rest area untik reach to the top where you can see beautiful calming landscape. For me personally, those hike deserve this really delicious warm cheese cake!
We climbed together to the top of Mount Takao on Sunday 。 There are a lot of many trials to get there . We chose Inariyama Trail that is 3.2km and took 1and half hour until to the top of the Mountain . It was my second time to climb the mountain experience and great experience .When we went down by Lift from the Mountain and got a little bit shock to ride the lift that was really high and only paid 490 Yen per person .I recommend you should go there and be enjoyed as a mountain man on your holidays .
One of the most popular mountains in the world it’s hiked by untold numbers a day. The hike isn’t anywhere near impossible and with food vendors and rest points throughout its a great adventure.
It’s a beautiful nature place in Tokyo! I didn’t even recognize that there’s such a place near there! It was a very good discovery to me and will for sure go back there again in the future! Got to see the beautiful Mount Fuji as well from the top of the mount Takao! It took us about a couple hours to claim up to the top from the Takao station. There are also very nice street shops on the way so you can get some yummy stuffs as well as gifts! I didn’t get to try but there’s also onsen at the Takao station and I bet that’s a great experience as well! If you are in Tokyo and feel like getting out of the City once in awhile, I recommend you to come over there! You’ll love that place! Cheers
An easy climb for people who would like to have a relaxing trek. The trails are amazingly directed towards the sights in the area. The car lift is a must have thing to enjoy, specially in the evening because its really exciting. The temple and the suspension bridge was great as well. Try to climb up in one trail and get down in another one for a better experience.Everything about nature is worth appreciation so why missing a magnificent place like Mount Takao which embraces the mother nature endearly.
Nice gentle hike. Theres a few ways to get to the summit. Theres a map to describe the trails as soon as you get off the train. The are inclines but nothing that cant be managed. I saw young children, elderly, and people of all shapes and sizes hiking. People wearing hiking gear and people wearing sandals. One trail is paved while the others are a bit more rugged. The summit is beautiful so dont let a HIKE keep you from taking on this adventure. Lots of people packed a lunch and sat out to eat at the summit. I even saw one group literally cooking what looked like miso and veggies. Yes, cooking!
Beautiful hike. It was raining/drizzling at the beginning of November, when my friends and I did this hike. There are lockers at the bottom to store items.Theres an option to take a cable car or ski lift part of the way up. We opted for the cable car; it was packed, be sure to let the elderly have a seat. I feel this hike is doable for those not that in shape. I did this hike a week after having my appendix removed, and it wasnt all that bad. Just rest when you need to. There are shrines throughout the hike, vending machines and little shops. There is even a couple of restaurants and an ice cream shop at the top. Be sure to bring cash. Theres a beautiful view at the top where you could see Mt. Fuji... however it was to cloudy for us to see Mt. Fuji. There are many different trails to take up and down, we took a different trail down, that led us to a suspension bridge.. it was really cool, especially with the fog going through the forest. There was quite a bit of foot traffic through the main hiking routes on a rainy day, so I can imagine it gets busier. The smaller trail we took down was not busy at all; besides my friends and we passed maybe 3 different groups. Oh, and try the ice cream shoo at the top, and the restuarant next to it, very good. Its a nice reward for yourself for the hiking youve done.
Visit here during middle of December. We picked trial 1, straight forward and easy walk. Very nice and beautiful view. It was around 8 to 10 degree. Any basic sportswear with windbreaker will do. You can also take a chair lift or cable car, go to midpoint, take some nice photo and head down if you dont want to sweat. Amazing place, we spent around half an hour at the small street at the mountain entrance. The whole journey was about 4 hours. If you want to get some rest from the busy Tokyo, and do not have too much time or budget, this is the place. Remember to head down to the onsen right in front of the railway station! Highly recommended.
