Educational garden featuring habitats with native butterflies, plus a center with insects & spiders.
I really enjoyed an informative tour with a knowledgeable guide where I learned about the areas beautiful insect life.I even got to release a butterfly as part of my tour. It was a highlight of my time in Monteverde.
We came on a cold day, most butterflies were "sleepy" so dont go on a cold day
Such a beautiful garden and Francis was the absolute best tour guide! A must see in Monteverde. Keiran and Megan gave us some great suggestions for food :)
Butterfly garden was very good. We learned so much about butterflies and reptiles. Our tour guide Antoni was excellent. Highly recommended.
The volunteer guide was very knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the tour. We were able to keep the receipt and use it for the duration of our time in the Monteverde area. We went another day just to take pictures.
This is the best place ever and a must for anybody traveling in the area.Bryna is incredibly knowledgable and funny, a world-class presenter. Her staff are diverse and come from around the world to teach people about the wonderful and rich diversity of insects on Costa Rica.Youll come away laughing and with a new appreciation for everything that crawls in the night. Oh! And the butterflies are spectacular.
Fascinating! Beautiful!Amazing tour. Highly recommended!
All praise Mini, and Mark, the guides. They were full of knowledge and enthusiasm. Thank you! We held a hercules beetle, and more! Loved the tour! We learned so much!
It was different than expected, we expected that we would have a big garden to walk throught, which was shown on internet, but it where 3 (accourding to me smallgardens. We only saw maybe 5 species of butterflies. The beginning of the tour was quite nice with the bugs.
I enjoyed going here and seeing some of the local butterfly species. I have been to larger & similar ones in Malaysia and Bornea area so have seen much more diversity so that is why I gave 4 stars. That said, it was a lovely day out to walk there also, enjoy some trails and pics of both flora and butterflies. There is a local eco lodge nearby that also have very good lemon pie and coffee with views so stop in there after!
Had a great experience visiting here! Definitely worth checking out! Great guiding and close encounters with cockroaches, butterfly and other insects. Very interesting and great fun for kids!
We did the tour with Amanda and she was so sweet and fun! We had a blast. You wont be disappointed here.
If you have time and/or are looking for a less physically tasking activity I highly recommend it. My guide (I cant remember her namewas very knowledgeable and I learned quiet a bit. As a added bonus you get great views from by the reception area and if its clear enough can see the Pacific.Check them out and dont forget to get something from the gift shop. Better prices then a lot of other places.
The best part about this place was the insect room. Learned so much about local insects and got to see them chrysalis of multiple kinds of butterflies, and some newly hatched ines that needed transfer to the butterfly rooms. The guide caught the new butterfly and let.one if the guests release it which was cool. Its very hard to get pics of butterflies. But it was cool seeing the different kinds. A bit expensive for the entry fee but overall a nice experience.
We had a great time exploring this area with the guide.
You get a free tour and can come back anytime you want as long as you stay in the area. Under these conditions its a pretty good Deal. The litten insect "Show" at the end was awesome thanks to the enthusiastic host.
The butterfly gardens were an informative tour of many insects native to Costa Rica, including tarantulas, goliath beetles, headlamp beetles, walking sticks, scorpions, moths, butterflies, and more. Additionally they have three large butterfly enclosures to walk through. My family had a lot of fun.
Beautiful gardens if you like butterflies or bugs I can only recommend. We had the luck to release 4 blue morpho butterflies in one of the gardens 🦋
Tour guide was professional and knowledgeable! You go with them through all the areas and they explain the different habitat, butterflies, and plants in great detail. There is also a presentation where they show you other popular bugs and it is almost TOO interactive! Then you are free to wander and go back to anything. There is walking, but nothing too strenuous.
Absolutely marvelous! The tour starts with a insect lecture where you can fold some of them followed by a gorgeous stroll through multiple butterfly habitats and a little nature tour. Loved it!
This was a great little place. The butterflies and in insects were probably the highlight for us and our kids. We really like handling the insects and even found some of our own a couple days later. Our tour guide really got my kids excited about all of the cool bugs in Costa Rica. Its not nearly as high up in the mountains as the big parks, but it was close, not too expensive and hands on. If you have the time, one entry fee allows 3 days of visiting.
A true piece of paradise. Unfortunately one of the butterfly houses were closed when I went but the 3 that were open were a delight. Not as big as I expected but still very pleasant and interesting. Event got to hold some bugs in the bug house
The staff was very friendly, the guides were extremely knowledgeable, biologist level. They walk you through different butterfly houses and are extremely informative. Many beautiful flowers and plants within the location. They also have other insects that they talked about. Obviously, the different butterflies were beautiful. I learned a lot.
We had a fabulous tour guide who was very knowledgeable and fun. However, there were not as many butterflies as expected, which made for an overall disappointing experience.
Wonderful casual tour. Lots of butterflies close enough for pictures. Phone camera works well but SLR works bestTour guides friendly and knowledgeable. Had a great time
Awesome experience, I never thought it might be this interesting to listen about insects and butterflies. Our guide was amazing too, she was so much energetic and devoted to those little crratures :definitely worth visiting and the entrance fee is really not much and it is supporting a good thing as these guys are really helping to study and protect these creatures. We have seen butterflies hatching right in front of our eyes and we have reliesed others to the garden back to nature. We learnt so much during the tour. Really recommend visiting!
Knowledgeable guides with good nature stories. And of course a lot of beautiful butterflies.Really enjoyed the tour that was included in the entrance fee!!
SO COOL and magical! Sahej was my tour guide and she was knowledgeable, patient, and informative. Many of the facts shared stuck to me and now I can look at a butterfly and confidently state that they are “drunk”. Fantastic experience and all due to the equally fantastic staff!Picture attached of a butterfly chilling out with me.
Well worth a visit, especially if you join one of the guided tours. Very informative and interesting. The butterflies are of course beautiful, but there are also bugs and spiders in the exhibition.
I love to visit butterfly gardens and preserves anywhere I go. This one is very beautiful and well-organized and has great guides that explained the butterflies in the context of the whole insect world with their resident examples of various insects such as Hercules beetle, various tarantulas and spiders, crickets, and millipedesMany of which you can hd as well. Highly recommended. I got there just before 3 as they were closing but they stayed for me. However, earlier in the morning when the sun is stronger is when there is more activity of the butterflies.
Had an amazing tour today at the Monteverde Butterfly Garden; our guide was able to give us the tour in French, and we greatly enjoyed the clear information provided. Learned a lot today, it was entertaining and pleasant, and we’re glad that we chose to go. A must-go place if you’re in the area!
We loved our visit to the Monte Verde butterfly gardens. The host did a great job showing us through the gardens and describing the various gardens and butterflies. The additional insects were also fun to view. It was very much worth our time.
Amazing tour of beetles , tarantulas and spiders. Stuff I never knew and our guide knew SO much. Butterfly tour was equally amazing. Truly a zen experience in the greenhouses.
A wonderful experience. Our guide Mira was great. Were staying at the Monteverde Inn, so we can take advantage of the ability to go back for the length of our stay in Monteverde. Definately go visit here.
Very cool and informative tour. The entrance fee is 15.5$ plus taxes per person. The guides are very enthusiastic about all creatures.
Unique and excellent place in time to learn about invertebrates. Fantastic spot for birding too. All the people I encountered were kind and helpful, even when I went full nerd talking about tarantulas. Cheers! -Joshua of the Fun Ukulele Co.
We absolutely loved the relaxed tour in the different serres. We were thrilled to see butterfly getting out of its pupae and stretching out its wings. Spectacular. 0
Small but pretty area. Dont expect spectacular, but nice enough to spend an hour. Some fun other creatures on display as well.
In this butterfly garden you can also learn about other small animals in Costa Rica: tarantulas, cockroaches, leafcutter ants, scorpions and other beetles. If you come towards the end of the opening hours and a guided tour (free of charge - a donation is appropriate), you get not only a lot of details told by the volunteers working here, you can also the last hatched breed of butterflies in the appropriate enclosure (three different there aredismissed. The visit is really recommendable.
A lovely little place to see the beautiful butterflies if Costa Rica. Lots to learn about other insects and spiders too. The guided tour lasts about an hour with plenty of time afterwards to see it at your leisure or come back another day!
Absolutely wonderful experience! The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The butterfly gardens themselves are beautiful, and they also have a bug room that hosts an impressive array of all sorts of Costa Rican bugs. Its a must for any trip to monteverde!
We trotted along to the butterfly garden simply because we had an hour or so to kill, but it seriously exceeded our expectations! We were hosted, in a private tour, by a young Aussie woman who was both extremely knowledgeable and passionate about insects generally. Im not mad keen on bugs or spiders but after her introduction to the myriad of species Costa Rica has to offer I was hooked. After checking out beautiful tarantulas, stick insects and beetles we made it to the butterfly gardens. We saw a spectacular array of butterflies and got to release our own newly emerged, from the chrysalis, butterflies. I cannot emphasise enough how worthwhile this visit is.
Very educational about not only butter flies but also other insects and arracnoids too. Great place to bring the kids. The guides are all internal that are very knowledgeable and well trained.
BEAUTIFUL Butterflies! We joined a tour in English with a super nice guide that explained a lot about the different butterflies and insects. We got to free butterflies that have just been born 5 hours before. The whole guided tour took an hour. Good for kids and adults. Fair entry fee and free parking! Recommended 😁👍
Yes I was a tourist and yes I loved everything about Costa Rica. However, the butterfly gardens were wonderful and our guide was very knowledgeable. If in Monteverde make this a place to see.
Had a fantastic tour of the Butterfly Garden and learned about a variety of butterflies and insects. Great spots to sit and enjoy the sounds of the surrounding forest.
Nice place to explore butterfliesWe spent a couple of hours in this garden (on the way back to town after visiting Monteverde Reserve). They have several types of butterflies there (not too many, maybe around 10?). We were lucky - it was a very sunny day and butterflies were active. The guided tour is interesting, we learned some facts about local butterflies and also got to see caterpillars of various butterflies + some interesting plants (like Dutch pipe and passion flower). After the guided tour in the garden we also attended a presentation/demonstration of some other Costa Rican insects - some really cool leaf-looking bugs, tarantula, centipedes, etc. We were relieved to learn that none of CR creatures have poison strong enough to kill a human being (even scorpions- what a relief . I would say visiting at least one butterfly garden during your CR trip is a good idea as you can see those beautiful creatures close and personal (picking a sunny day would certainly help to see them active). We enjoyed our visit - staff was very friendly and helpful, and the owner helped us to order a taxi to go back to town.
Walked from hotel. Friendly staff an ok tour. One issue. Same price for all. Should be a tourist price and a tico price. Might attract more people.
The butterfly garden was a fun informative exhibit. Jane was our guide and she was extremely enthusiastic about her job and made the experience. In addition to her knowledge on the butterflies she also talked to us about the other insect exhibits they have. Worth the trip for a few hours.
Such a neat place! Tons of butterflies, an informational leaf cutter ant colony and insect exhibit, and the staff are super friendly and helpful.
