Moni Timiou Prodromou / Monastery of St John the Baptist - Monastery in Pyrgos, Greece
Moni Timiou Prodromou / Monastery of St John the Baptist in Pyrgos
Description
Beautiful and still inhabited
Absolutely fantastic!
Παρακαλώ διατηρείτε τον χώρο καθαρό!(ENGLocated on a hiking trail. 15 to 30 minutes distance from the church of John the Baptist. Definitely a monastery that you should visit. Hospitable priests and picturesque buildings. It can not be reached by car. Pay attention to sunless places! Please keep the space clean!
MoreΤι υπέροχη μονή!
MoreThe monastery was a 15-minute walk from the parking lot through a beautiful woodland path. No shorts / short skirts are allowed to enter the monastery, however clean, spare fabrics are provided for that purpose. The monastery is built on the cliff wall and we visited the interior - the view was amazing! The monks were very friendly and offered us fresh Greek coffee, water and a dessert called loukoumia - true representatives of Greek hospitality! We bought some handmade soap to support them, such a lovely visit. :)

MoreThis place was quite breathtaking! There is a.long walk from where you park your car, you should wear the sports shoes or hiking shoes as there rocks and slippery ground. During the summer months the use of a hat is also a good idea.
MoreAbsolutely worth if you look for vernacular and picturesque architecture in a dramatic landscape. You can visit the interior guided by the monks.PS: Bad access road
MoreUnbelievable experience and a very spectacular sight.Moni Agiou Ioannou Prodromou is a monastery glued against the canyan walls of the Loussios gorge. The monastery dates from the 12th century. It is one of the most spectacular sites along the Loussios gorge.

Spiritual monastery. Amazing construction. Unbelievable scenery.
The friendly cat made this a 5-star experience
A historical monastery in a beautiful natural setting
I dont think I need to justify the rating- the location is breathtaking and the buildings seem to hang from the rocks like bats. We did the Stemnitsa to Dimitsana trail (12.5km)and this was our first stop-coffee, water and a sweet treat included courtesy of the monks!
MoreHoly place inside huge rocks. You have to walk a bit to reach the Monastery.
A really impressive monastery hanging from the cliff...a 10-15 minute walk from the car parking, closes at 13:00.
MoreVery cool place! Simple but inspiring.

Amazing, well worth the walk, although you’ll need trousers on if you want to get inside.
MoreMight be my favourite place in Peloponnese. Go there if you have a chance.

Very impressive site and views. Its well worth the trip, especially when you want to do something other tourist stuff. The papas will welcome you with coffee and sweets. Need good shoes for the walk down there, but even small children will manage.
MoreMagnetic church fixe on the rock!

MoreThe monastery is fascinating. The monks are humble and nice. I am truly touched by their hospitality. Thank you for being who you are and keeping this place.
MoreAtmospheric, awe inspiring and reflective. A truly beautiful place.
An incredible sight
Very nice Monastery and very friendly monks. There is an option for a beautiful hike to the Filosofou Moni which takes 45 minutes, half of the way is going down to the river and the second half is climbing to the Moni, which was not easy to our kids. The path is beautiful especially near the Lucius river, most of the path is shaded but hard walking.
MoreMust see, really authentic monastery, few tourist!
Must have been! Monks were very polite and helpful. We have tasted real Greek coffee. Stunning views
MoreThe Timiou Moni Prodromou (Greek: Μονή Τιμίου Προδρόμου(i.e. for Greek Monastery of the Holy Precursoris a famous Greek monastery, very picturesquely situated on the eastern bank of the Lousios gorge. It houses today still an important monastic community (± 15 monks? And is accessible from Stemnitsa , Dimitsana and Ellinikon through a very meandering and not too good way.According to tradition it was founded in 1167 by Emperor Manuel Comnenus, but reliable sources situate the foundation of the current monastery rather somewhere in the 16th century. It is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, which is called in the Orthodox tradition usually Prodromos, i.e. Precursor (of Christ). The monastery has two churches. The oldest is very small (only 2.25 x 4.90 mand lies against the rock face. The peculiar arrangement of the iconostasis (which forms an angle of ± 45 ° with the naveis explained by the lack of available space. The frescoes late 16th / early 17th century were applied directly to the wall. Around this church were gradually built on the other monastic buildings whose balconies hang high above the Lousios gorge. A second church, architecturally less important, more recent (1911), and is isolated at a distance from the other buildings. She is committed to the orthodox Holy Athanasios of Christianoupolis, who lived around the turn of the 18th century, and was buried in the monastery after his death. From here you can descend via a walkway to the bed of the Lousios, and hence reach the nearby monastery of the Philosopher.-From "Wikipedia" the free encyclopedia
MoreBeautiful old Orthodox monastery located at the gorge of Lousios river. It is built into the rocks, pretty impressive and picturesque scenery. The access is not a difficult one, by car and then 15 minutes approximately, on foot. Peaceful place, good photo opportunities.
MoreWorth the hike. Unreal that dedicated monks still live and meditate here. Credit to them! This is rural
Morean original MUST DO in Acadia
Breath taking monastery in to the wild of Lousios river with a unique view
Fantastic spectacle
Gob smacking collection of rooms stuck on to the side of the cliffs! The entrance is fairly conventional, although the building is cut into the rock. The church is the usual beautiful mystical Greek chapel youd expect. You then proceed upstairs and suddenly there you are - on the balcony. It looks so safe from there - it looks scary from below. You dont get as far as the rooms supported on rotting pit props.A bit of a pull back up to the car park, but then youll probably be walking along the gorge anyway.
MoreThis place is hard to get. It takes hours of driving BUT its worth the whole trip. The atmosphere - the view. I recommend this trip to everyone who likes religious historical sights out of the ordinary. You can go all day long without entering.Closed from 13.00 to 17.00.
