Grand 1500s royal monastery with a lavishly decorated Renaissance interior & 2-tiered cloisters.
Lovely place to visit...give yourself about an hour.
In most cities this would score a 5 star rating, but in the city with the Alhambra it has to be relative. The monestary itself is a nice quiet visit in charming old buildings, but what really gets the score up is the beautiful church in the monestary, certainly worth a visit. It costs 4 euro per person to get it and despite having visited it in August it was not crowded at all.
The architecture of this church is amazing. It was completed in 1522. It has so many nice sculptures that I realized that I needed to learn a lot about the history of Granada and the church. I believe it’s a must see place in Granada. You need to check the open time before you go. Admission ticket is very reasonable.
Not an exciting place to go. The ticket allows for visiting the pateo around the orange garden, some not-interesting rooms and the church. The church is impressive, baroque, beautiful, but there are other better options to see in Granada. I think it was ok, but a bit expensive for the price.
Beautiful and quiet place. The church is one of the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen. Definitely recommend to visit
There is a nice courtyard, but, for me, the church is the most impressive one in Granada... a must see
So I at first was REALLY annoyed with this place, as unlike the three other spots I went to earlier that day with a combined ticket, this place did NOT have free Wifi to download the app audioguide. Rather a locked network showed and the grouchy staff member claimed there was no Wifi password for me to use. My phone data wasn’t working which meant I wandered annoyed with NO info anywhere on what I was seeing. I was ready to give this place totally negative reviews as before you reach the STUNNING chapel, the rest of the rooms to visit are mediocre. But my god, the chapel. WOW. I bought a ticket under the multipass option: this, the cathedra and chapel, and another monastery, for €17.
very beautiful site
It’s not a big place but the church inside is very beautiful. It’s worth to see it.
This monastery is probably not listed as a "top attraction" in Granada but it is definitely a "must see". The hallways are simple but very telling of the sacred religious life that is exemplified by the nuns and friars that live there. The gardens are beautiful and the religious art throughout is beautiful too. But the most impressive and surprising part is the amazing church that catches you by surprise in one of the doors that looks just like another door. The altarpieces are breathtaking and so are all the paintings and religious art found inside. Cost is 4 euros, best money spent!
Could definitely be used for a movie scene. On the negatives, I would.say the the fact that they charge an entry fee to a monastery
A breathtaking monastery of baroque design,Every inch has been frescoed leaving nothing behindGold leaf everywhere you cant help but stare,With such meticulous detail to show God they care!
Worthwhile stop, you may choose a guide or not, but quite an impressive renascence showcase and burial site of the @Great Captain
A real surprise attraction. The church in an otherwise standard monastery is stunning.
Your eyes cannot get enough of this place! Its gorgeous, opulent, and yet not overwhelming... You still feel peaceful, despite the intensity and detail of the surroundings.
If it werent for the church, it would be extremely boring. The inside takes you by surprise.
Great place to visit! Monastery is quite plain but the church is magnificient!
Well worth visiting! We came here to kill some time before our Alhambra visit and it took us by surprised! It was absolutely beautiful and intricate inside. There werent a lot of people inside, so we got to escape from the crowds and just enjoy the peaceful courtyard (with oranges!)Note: Visited in January 2020, but catching up reviews because of COVID.
Don’t miss this place, quiet and inspiring. This is where el Gran Capitan rest in peace.
I was more impressed by this church and its rugged authenticity than by the Granada Cathedral. Peaceful and genuine. There is a 4 euro entry fee.
Beautiful place for a short visit.
Great monastery and entrance fee is 3 euro. There is not a lot of tourist since its few minutes walk from the catheral and royal chapel.
We didn’t go in, but a beautiful outside with all of the orange trees!
Amazing Spanish Baroque altar not to be missed. Tickets are €4 (09/2019). Small venue that can be finished in 30 minutes but we stayed longer to fully admire the beauty of the church, also because it was raining outside. We caught the nuns doing there evensong at around 1800 on a Sunday. Unassuming from the outside and all the other rooms were simple so we were blown away when we saw the church in all of its glory. Definitely recommended.
Really pretty monastery, quiet and peaceful. Restoration is underway in some areas, sadly much more is needed. That being said its well worth a visit especially if you have a Granada pass. Pretty orange grove in the centre and theres is a hidden gem in the form of highly decorative worship area. Only 7 or so minutes from the cathedral so easy to reach. Enjoy
The sense of history here is amazing. Its fascinating to consider that centuries of nuns have cloistered themselves here, shut away from the outside world. My wife and I went at 4:30 and were present in the monastery when the nuns started chanting the afternoon hours. Hearing them perform a ceremony that so many others have performed over the centuries was profound.
This monastery is a great way to be introduced into a life of monks. This place is very peaceful and allows for a very quick tour. The orange orchard inside the monastery makes it beautiful. They sell pastries and jams inside, which I was very tempted to buy, but...
A real hidden gem. Peaceful and serene, with relatively few tourists. The Church is packed with interesting art. The guide is worth picking up for a euro.
Excellent and worth the trip!Be sure to check hours and days off.
We were lucky to see a choir singing the Requium which was very moving even though I am not religious. The paintings and architecture are excellent
Starts off very basic nothing fancy but the end of your visit is well worth the wait. Amazing paintings and sculptures, not many tourists travel this far outside the city center either.
Gorgeous cathedral in a uniquely Portuguese Manuelite style. Beautiful and fascinating history of Portugal in the lower courtyard burial room.
Definitely one of the things you should do while in Toledo. Not a huge Monastary, but very pretty. The chapel is beautiful.
Pay the little price for ticket entrance, it absolutely deserves it. Begin your visit in counterclockwise order, going on your right when you reach the first cloister. In this way, you will live your visit like in a climax: you will think to have waste your money and your time, just to take a look to apparently valueless pictures or forniture. Then you will become aware of little details, like the tombs of the former friars, who lie just under your feet, all around the cloister. They are still there, quiet and silent. Eventually, you will reach the church and you will be hit by an explosion of colours. The church is simply incredible, you will spend some minutes with an open mouth and the head pointed to the fine decored ceiling. This was one of the best place to see in Granada, definitely.
One of the best things Ive seen in Granada. You have to pay 4€ to get in but this is totally worth it. Ive seen a lot of churches but this one is the most amazing one you have to go there
I only saw the outside and its impossing, beautiful. Bear in mind when visiting Spanish cities the siesta hours. By the time I arrived to Granada, they were closing for siesta break. And so were the other basilicas nearby, except the Cathedral that does remain open.
Grandiose majesty well worth a short walk from the centre of Granada and stopping off at the Botanical Gardens. Entry 2019 is €4 to the Monastery.
Worth a visit to see the lovely altar inside
There is a very nice courtyard in the monastery which is the oart that I enjoyed the most. The rest was not as interesting, probably because the paper guide was poorly written and we couldn’t understand where things were. 4€ to enter + 1€ for the paper guide. I wouldn’t go there again.
Beautiful monastery that is a bit off the beaten path. Because of this it does not receive as many visitors. This is a shame because it is absolutely worth a visit when you are in Granada. Take your time and really admire the space.Small entrance fee of 4 euros when I went.
Arguably Granada’s best kept secret: a dazzling Renaissance church which is the collective work of the best artists of the time in early 16th century Spain. Although founded by the Catholic Monarchs, hence the ‘Royal’ in the name, it is really devoted to the memory of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, el Gran Capitán, who is buried in the temple. His genius ensured Spain’s military supremacy for 150 years. Don’t miss this rarely visited gem.
Dont miss this exquisite off the beaten path spot. Breathtaking frescoed and ornate interior.
Ive been to many monasteries & is really hard to find anything to top Lisbons. The actual chapel is interesting fue its intrinsic design. The monetary on its own is not tgat interesting.
Wonderful mix of austere monastic setting with rich baroque church interiors. As one enters, there isnt much to see -- an orange grove in the courtyard, a number of reflection rooms with spartan furniture and some interesting paintings. But the end reveals the wonderful church. 4 euros. Closed for siesta between 130pm to 4pm on weekdays.
Beautiful interior, nice and calm. The guide booklet could have done a better job to clarify which pictures and sights its talking about but other than that well worth the visit.
Very nice, despite that the entrance is not well indicated so its not easy to spot
Worth a look although the lighting and interpretation are not nearly as good as Granada Cathedral the Basilica of San Juan. An interesting style where all the walls and ceilings are painted as works of art.
You cannot tell it from the outside. It looked like a normal monastery. But when you stepped into the chapel, wow! Its can easily be the most beautiful chapel I have seen in Spain. Small, but gorgeous.
When u enter it does not look great but when u see the main vault u r mesmerised by the detailed paintings. Worth a quick visit. There is parking on the street as well.
An underrated monastery in the heart of the city. Very few visitors come here and the place is often very quiet and empty.Theres a nice cloister with lemon/orange trees inside, and the rooms are pretty bare since its a monastery. However, the church inside is absolutely breathtaking. The entrance price might seem a little steep for a small place (4€but the church makes it worth it.
