Molly - Cocktail bar in Canberra, Australia
Do yourself a favour! Old fashioned was quality! Bar peeps were super Knowledgeable
This bar has a great feel with welcoming staff and a great selection of liquor. The old fashioned was super flavoursome and well presented.
Jazz Jam is a must see.Biggest selection of whiskey Ive ever seen with some quality cocktails and fitting food.
Amazing speakeasy I the centre of Canberra. amazing cocktails and great Jazz make this the perfect place for romantic drinks or small gatherings.
A favourite! Great cocktails, a great collection of whisky, friendly service, chill vibe, and awesome music!
gabby, riley and brodie make the best drinks ever!!! 10/10 for hospitality, character and drinks. would highly recommend!!
racist bar. only checked our ids upon entry out of the whole line when we’re asian only accepted our passports. we accepted and went back to retrieve our passports. after we came back, the bartender wanted to check our ids again after checking it upon check in and was very aggressive when i couldn’t hear him. tried to over charge us THEN forgot our drink. spilled our drink upon arrival with no apology or cleaning. really disappointing behaviour from a bar with great reviews
two of the staff had very poor attitude and spilled beer on the table during service without apologising, and another forgot my order so I had to reorder my drink again. Change was also short of $10 so I feel that people should avoid using cash here. Although the ambience was good, the bartenders were clearly not interested in serving the customers.Overall, the experience was a very poor one and the bar does not live up to its name as “one of Canberra’s best bars”.
What a sublime bar. Incredible selection, and things typically very hard to find. The bartenders are fantastic and very helpful.
One of the good thing about living in civic is that I can go to Molly everyday, every night.A fantastic whisky & cocktail bar. As a whisky enthusiast, I like their selection, and also love to try their new products. Teams are friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Great atmosphere with some cozy jazz performances. Would love to recommend this place to all my friends.
Secret room behind a funky door, I was too plastered to really appreciate this place!! But would love to go back again if ever in Canberra
Excellent selection of whisky (despite 400% mark up on retail), nice atmosphere and mostly friendly bartenders. Ive been here before and have had nothing but nice things to say about the place, even if it is a little difficult to find. HOWEVER, my most recent experience will be the reason why I wont be coming back here again. We booked a table here for a friends birthday. Things were fine for the first couple of hours that we were there, but when we accidentally spilt some water on the table, thats when things changed. I should note that we were far from inebriated at this time.We asked one of the table staff if they could bring us some paper towel or something to clean the water up, which they did. We even cleaned up the spillage ourselves, and advised the table staff that the spillage was only water. Despite it not being more than about 100ml of water and not a large mess, we still apologised to the staff.Soon after this event, we had bartenders/table staff coming to our table to clear glasses every 10-15 minutes - even when we often didnt have any (or sometimes only a single glass to clear). This was hardly necessary, but it would soon become apparent why this was being done. By about the fourth visit from one of the bartenders, they started some small talk with us, and asked what we were drinking, followed by offering some really obscure improv analogy/description about one of the drinks that seemed really out of place. It was clear at this stage that the bartenders/wait staff were likely checking up on us to see if we were drunk. This feeling made us uncomfortable, and definitely impacted on our enjoyment of the special occasion for the remainder of the night.Ill be the first to admit when Im in the wrong, but even after personally only consuming 4 drinks in the space of 4 hours and being essentially sober, I definitely did not think that we were being loud, rowdy or disturbing other patrons - neither were any other drinks spilled. None of the bartenders or wait staff ever mentioned any issues or complaints about our behaviour. Later in the evening, a couple of our guests were refused service of alcohol. I completely understand that business requirements exist in licenced premises, however no such indication was made to these guests that they were being refused alcohol based on the assumption that they were intoxicated. Again, we would have been more than open to any concerns that the staff had about our behaviour or otherwise. The only other thing that we believed may have been a cause for concern from the staff was in regards to one of the oil candles/laterns that was on the table, which we had changed the setting on to increase the strength of the flame. I completely understand if this was perceived as an issue by staff, and would have refrained from doing so, had this been raised by the staff there as a problem.Eventually, one of the staff there summoned the courage to come to the table. They snatched the candle from the table, turned it off, told us to finish our drinks and leave. ZERO explanation, ZERO warnings or concerns raised. We were still perplexed by this, given the above. However, given we had been planning to leave, accepted the directions given by the staff member.Molly drinks are not cheap, so when I say that between 5 of us that we spent $600+, it is not necessarily a reflection of the total volume of drinks consumed between us (I was tasting whiskies that were $30-$60 each and only had 5 drinks over a 5 hour period).I have to say, this was absolutely poor form by your staff, especially considering how much we spent there. Great way to show your appreciation for people who help keep your business viable, and a great way to put a sour taste on what was meant to be a special occasion for a close friend. We wont be back again. Will it matter to Molly? Probably not, but I hope that some people think twice about coming here if theyre looking to celebrate a special occasion.
Hidden gem. Im reluctant to post a review because I dont want this place getting too busy for me to attend.Awesome selection of cocktails and house drinks. If you are nice to the staff they will also make you off menu drinks if they have the bottles in stock.
Im so pleased that Molly has reopened at this new secluded location. Nice whiskeys and jazz music makes it worth a visit.
Fun hidden location, good for functions. Nice atmosphere, could benefit from some additional standard cocktails, the hardened spirits menu does not suit every mood, nice cheese and meat platters.
hidden gem.lovely ambience (maybe abit too darkdespite being a speak easy bar.
Hidden bar up 2 flights of stairs behind a big wooden door. Once you open the door, youre greeted with a warm dim ambience, with jazzy music playing in the background. A piano stage to the right and bar to the left. We were sat in the second room dawned with chandeliers. I had the salty dog and my partner had the passion fruit. Both drinks were very enjoyable. The salty dog was sweet with a minor note of bitterness from the grapefruit, relieved from the sweetness of the honey blended with the salt crystals from the glass. The passion fruit was different with a hint of Almond from the orgreat.
Cosy atmosphere with classic decor. Drinks are really good. Another place Ill call my comfort zone.
One of the best bar with fabulous varieties of malt whiskies. I tasted all new variety of my favourite whiskey, Laphroag.
Visited Molly Bar during a trip to Canberra for my partners 30th birthday. What a gem! We got there pretty early in the evening for some drinks and something small to eat. Tried the gunshop fizz and got the cheese board. Both delicious! The staff were amazing, and when I told them about my partners 30th they cut the fruit on top of the drink in a fan. And the cheese board had an apple with a smiley face cut into it. It was very sweet! Stayed for a couple more cocktails, negroni and old fashioned before moving on. We did come back later in the night to enjoy some jazz and try more cocktails. Tried the jackaroo, salty dog and blue blazer. All of which were great. The atmosphere was amazing, the staff great, the jazz wonderful. Definitely a new favourite and a must visit whenever Im in Canberra.
My daughter took us to this hole-in-the-wall, or speakeasy style bar. The range of whisky was made manageable by the knowledge of the staff behind the bar. The live jazz was loud, but was perfect for sitting and tasting. A place I would always return to (and did).
Great place. Fantastic drink selection and fun atmosphere. I had a drink accidently spilled on me, but the staff went above and beyond to address the issue. I feel these efforts deserve a 5* review. Recommend
Nice n cozy place with an old world charm. Good experience.
The best cocktail bar in town with varieties of cocktails, love the ambience and knowledgable staff. Not sure what you are after, just ask the bartender and they will be able to recommend something that suits your palate.
Absolutely loved our experience at Molly, great array of drinks and food. We were lucky enough to be seated in the Vault alone - what an experience! Would highly recommend their Gunshop Fizz.
Really nice quite little gem of a bar. Freidly service and a great vibe!
Fantastic place! I had the best time here last night. 1920s jazz vibes, delicious cocktails, friendly and fun bartenders! Will definitely be back and 10/10 would recommend!
A United States 1920s version of a speakeasy bar in Australia with no markings outside so you need to go with a friend of a friend. Whiskey 🥃 is the drink of choice here but I am a light weight so I got a Shiraz instead. They had live jazz band and it is so loud you can barely talk. Beautiful woman but too loud to chat with them.
Amazing selection of whisky. Live music really set the tone. All cocktails were great
Tasty cocktails and great Ambiance.Great place to hangout and enjoy a glass of drink with live music.
Classy & sophisticated whiskey bar in the heart of Canberra. The whiskey was smooth and so was the jazz. Definitely recommended
One of our new favourite spots. A huge selection of whisky and other beverages with staff who know their stuff. Also, some great bar bites to add to the night.
Wasn’t serving cocktails 1.5 hours before they close at a cocktail bar…I was a quite disappointed last night when I arrived late into town and searched for the best cocktail bar in town and Molly came up. It was a nice entrance with from what I saw a great back bar. However when I walked in I was greeted with “do you have a mask” and “we’re not serving cocktails”(I have an exemption mind you)I used to work in hospitality for many years earlier on in my life and I find that it’s generally young management that make these decisions to try and cut time and save a couple of bucks. Although in all this they loose the essence of an individuals experience. I’m sure it’s a great bar, I just think it’s a bit of a shame to stop cocktails so early.
Hands down one of the best places to go to if you want to have a drink, if youre a lover of jazz music and if you enjoy good quality whisky being served by bartenders who know their stuff. I love this place and how hard it is to find. The ambience and environment is fantastic and I love how they hold tastings every month and there is a separate basement area so its not too crowded. Great music, brilliant range of whisky and a fantastic place to come to with friends, with your partner or even by yourself.
Molly is one of the must do bars in Canberra. It has a great vibe and great staff (though there was one salty dude who served us last time). I am a fan of whisky so every time I look at the bar I just want to work my way through everything from left to right! Great array of snack foods… love this place!
Great speakeasy thats really no secret to anyone in Canberra. They have an amazing selection of cocktails. The mocktails also taste like real alcoholic drinks!!! ( They only have 2, I like the ginger raspberry one.). Massive selection of expensive and aged whiskeys.... Im not a whiskey person myself. If you do happen to be a whiskey lover, you must MUST sample some here. The vibe is super chilled, & often theres a live band playing. Bar staff are very friendly and nice. Food selection is limited, and although tasty, they are at most, bar snacks. They have tables but dont be fooled, its not a dinner place.
Great atmosphere and music. Large selection of drinks. Only issue is deciding what to drink!
Absolute love it. The whole theme, concept, or really is like a step back to a simpler, classy time. It would be nice to have more sound dampening as it can be hard to talk, but otherwise perfect. An obvious level of careful thought has gone in to creating something original and special that has rapidly become a centre of Canberras social scene.
I love Molly!!!!! Really fantastic drink and superb service from the two men working there. Fantastic venue fantastic vibe. Place my body in the walls when I die
One of my favourite bars in Canberra. Definitely recommend to add to your Saturday night out schedule! Virtuous handsome bartenders will meet your cocktails’ demand. best widest spirits’ choice, scotch range is splendid! From old good classics to exquisite aged ones. My love is old school negroni!Form time time you can catch a sexy jazz band! Loving atmosphere! Walk in only, secret entrance, but worth it
Sweet place! Theres no signage to show that it exists. Pricey for some, but worth it to see the bartender produce a "fig the cops". Oh and the jazzy atmosphere makes it worth the visit.
Great little speakeasy bar in Canberra. Huge whisky list and lovely old fashioneds. There was live music when we stopped in, and they offer memberships to regulars.
What a sensational place to chill. Live jazz, amazing cocktails/whiskey and incredible atmosphere. You wont regret your visit.
Awesome speakeasy, huge whiskey selection, hidden away in Odgers Lane. Awesome ambience, cocktails, charcuterie plate, live jazz, love this place!
Great little bar in a atotally unassuming lane. The atmosphere is kept true to its intended theme and the bar has got an excellent range of cocktails. Some light finger food with a good range of meats/ characterise and cheeses are also available. The whiskeys are also particularly prolific with good range of origins and years for single malts.
We were heading to Canberra and some friends of ours recommended Molly Bar. I took a quick look on Instagram and immediately knew this was somewhere we just had to visit. We expected it to be hard to find, given it is a speakeasy. However it wasn’t too hard, since we saw a dashing barman in a vest exiting an old building in an alleyway off Odgers lane in Canberra’s ‘Civic’ area.Head up the inconspicuous stairwell and you’ll see the tiled/mosaic Molly doormat. Enter into the space and take a moment to take it all in.The bar is uber cool. A dimly lit space with a mix of booths, lounges and tables, with candles to provide light for you to peruse the menu. An 100 year old piano sits in the corner, ready for live music to entertain the crowds.Drink wise, you’ll be wowed by the expansive bar which is fully stocked with the most extensive whiskey list you’ll find, with over 300 on the list alone. Whilst it specialises in whisky, they’ve also got plenty of gins and other cocktails too. I wasn’t sure what to order and gave my taste preferences to the barman and he whipped me up a cocktail with Gin, Grenadine, Sweet Vermouth, Lemon And Egg white. It was light and sweet and delicious. It was tough to decide whether this was the favourite or “Alfie’s Bakery cocktail”. We’ve never had anything like it; infused with rum, demara sugar, burnt butter and raisin toast. This stiff drink brought out all those flavours in spades. We would certainly return for this alone.Although we didn’t eat, since our bar visit preceded a previously booked dinner, the cheese and charcuterie platters looked incredible and we’ll certainly be up for ordering one of these next time.A visit here will certainly take you back in time, for all the right reasons. It is contextually fitting to the prohibition era, it has a whole lot of class and character and great drinks to boot.Add the map coordinates to you phone and make your way to the bar. Half the fun is finding it and the rest is waiting for you behind the unmarked wooden door.
Always a good time to be had at Molly. Excellent drink selection, good space to relax in a booth or at a table and on the busy nights the downstairs section is a good overflow. Just make sure you get a couch to relax on. The live music line up mid week is spot on and the bar tenders are knowledgeable and ready to offer a suggestion. Take a moment and ask to see the walk in safe - many valuable whiskies are deposited here in the old commonwealth bank.
Wow, thats all I can say! Well, after another drink at Molly I could elaborate a bit: mystical, nostalgic, beautiful, unique, secretive, qwerty, good old fashioned cocktail bar that seems to play only my favourite Spotify playlists. I could not love it more and will come back to Canberra just to visit it again. An extra special thank you to the staff that fits in so perfectly and adds extra character to a place thats already so full of character. Do not miss this place, even if finding it might not be easy. Its well worth the search.
Excellent bar with live jazz music every Tuesday and Thursday. Specialises in whiskey, cognac and the likes. Very friendly bartenders who are helpful and can suggest drinks. Fun 5o watch also whilst they make your drinks. Intimate atmosphere during the week. Less so on weekends. Relaxed, classy and sophisticated.
One of my favourite hidden cocktails bars in Canberra. Wonderful atmosphere and worth the difficult find, staff are lovely. Extensive menu and thankfully it is now larger than the old venue. If you come on a Thursday evening they have live jazz music playing which is a real treat and definitely worth experiencing.
