Mint and Mustard - Indian restaurant in Penarth, United Kingdom
One of our favourite restaurants with consistently the best Indian food we’ve ever tasted and the friendliest staff who always make us feel welcome.
This blew me away. So many levels above a normal curry restaurant. Amazing quality food, unpretentious and unassuming decor - which I love, because they’re not trying to hype themselves. This place is all about authentic cuisine. Generous portions as well. A fantastic surprise and I recommended.
I was given a service charge even though the menu said the service charge was for six people. Had Rogan Josh and all it was was brown sauce . Ill never eat there again.
Tasteful food here but the portion sizes werent very good in my opinion.
Fantastic as always. Still my favourite curry house and has been for years. Simply the best.
I cant praise this restaurant enough. Simply some of the best food weve eaten, right from the starters. Even the pickle tray was special. The service was impeccable, the surroundings nice, I just wish we lived closer. Penarth is very lucky to have such a great restaurant.
Taste and portion of the items are good. If its an occasional visit then completely worth it. Id highly suggest you to experiment with the menu in order to enjoy to its fullest. Try unknown dishes.
Wow, delicious food, absolutely stunning. Keralan cuisine but also lots of dishes from the north of India. Service was spot on and our waiter really took the time to tell us about the dishes and which parts of India our food originated from. Will definitely go back next time Im in the area. Thanks very much for an excellent meal that far exceeded our expectations. Keep it up! I didnt take any photos I was too busy concentrating on enjoying the food!!
Probably one of the best Indian cuisines I have experienced. From starters to mains the overall quality was above expectations.
From start to finish fantastic service. great food, definitely be back again.
Very clean and fresh cooking with every dish a mouth watering delight. Friendly service and a staff that would not leave until my taxi arrived after closing. Now that’s what I call service. The curry I had was Norther Indian and very different than the usual. Both spice and tomato flavors and chilli coriander naan Plus a few more dishes were super tasty and flavorful.I’d go back I. A heartbeat
Busy on a Saturday night - booked via open table. Would recommend booking prior.Had the prawn goan vindaloo- nice dish -Spicy with an amazing sauce- just disappointed by the number of prawns in the dish- 6.The Naan bread was nice- cut uk into5 slices and could be shared.Desert of carrot was too sweet, it has a layer of oil at the bottom of the dish- as to be expected for Indian deserts. The mango margarita was a classic and not made with crushed ice.Service was ok- busy which could do with more staff.
Lovely food, attentive staff. Very tasty, and although not huge portions I was satisfied when I left.
First visit based on good recommendations. Lovely air conditioned premises & friendly staff. Sadly, We were very disappointed with the food. Sheekh kebabs were good portion but very spicy n “mint” sauce was very thick & intense flavour of maybe coriander. Main meals - ordered a keralan mango / coconut delicately spiced prawn curry but, meal that arrived was green and had a pungent intense flavour no hint of delicate / coconut or mango. The butter chicken was more like a spicy tikka masala. We left wondering if we’d been served someone else’s meals as food just didn’t match up with menu description of the dishes we ordered. Was very expensive. Unlikely to return. And, jug of water was room temperature - should definitely be well chilled with ice in it in this hot weather.
Amazing food lovely staff definitely come again.
My second visit, the first was " can only say was one of the best India meal I have ever had. My second visit, Friday 8th, was again a very impressive meal, staff very friendly, just one small negative I would say the "heat" on the menu is not what I would call correct on what I have had on my 100s of visits to other Indian restaurants, I had the Goan Vindaloo, if vindaloo "heat" is 9/10, I say this was a more like a 5/10 in "heat".....but yhe meal its self was amazing. Would love to go back again soon....excellent. food
Reliably good Indian restaurant which serves somewhat out of the ordinary food in pleasant surroundings. Only opens at 2pm on a Saturday but still worth the trip for a late lunch
We were visiting Penarth and the restaurant was approx 3 minutes from the hotel. Coming from London and used to eating authentic Indian food, we, the family, visited the restaurant with no hope of finding authentic Indian food (not Bangladeshi food disguised as Indian food consisting of Dhansak, Jalfrezi, etc).To our pleasant surprise, the food quality was quite authentic, very good in flavours. We tried the veg thali, lamb and chicken thali, kids tried Delhi Chicken. The naan bread was very well made, the entire food was brilliant. My wife is extremely difficult to please in regards to food and she loved it. There was a mess up with the dessert order but it happens sometimes. We visited the restaurant again next day and tried Tandoori cauliflower wings, Tandoori Chicken and others and again the food was spot on. The manager offered us the dessert on house because of mess up last night which was a nice gesture.Must visit for authentic flavours. The only downside was the server on first day, wouldnt answer our questions properly but it didnt bother us too much.
Delicious and cooked without too much fat! Definitely order from there takeaway again!
Fantastic dining experience at the mint and mustard in Penarth, staff where very friendly and efficient the food was fantastic and full of flavour overall a great experience and will highly recommend.
Food exceptional and fab atmosphere. Service a little patchy in places, but we put that to just opening up after lockdown, hence 5 stars.
This has been (and still is, for takeaways in lockdown!our go to place for authentic Indian food. The host and staff are always welcoming and the food consistently outstanding. I can highly recommend the Parsee Dhansak and Punjabi Saag.
For what is meant to be a high end restaurant, the takeaway we had, which was over £80; was very average. Certainly had better quality from other takeaways and at a much cheaper price too. Will not be ordering from here again!!
This is our first meal with the restaurant in Penarth. I think maybe our last. We had a takeaway. Tandoori dil Salmon their signature dish, 3 pieces of salmon, nothing else, no salad, nothing £14.90. Not a big choice for vegetarians. I had vegetarian dansak. Peshwari x 2 lukewarm. Nothing was very enjoyable. And some side dishes. Total cost after 10%off £47.65. Ive been eating Indian curry for 60yrs. I know my curry. Very disappointed. Would not recommend.
We have been to lots of Indian restaurants and this by far is the best...On entry we was greeted my RAM and he was absolutely brilliant form start to finish..Anything we needed he sorted it out..NOW the food.. We came on here prior to going and seen one bad comment about the food... All Im. Going to say is.. Never believe everything you read. The food was STUNNING.. Rich, creamy, spicy. The food was plated up like a micheln star chef.. And you can see they care what comes out the kitchen..Will. Definitely be using this as my regular 👍🏼👍🏼
Incredible food and customer service. They are also incredible in accommodating for allergies or food sensitivities. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Indian cuisine.
Thank you so much Mint and Mustard Penarth for the fantastic takeaway we ordered for my sons 18th birthday during lockdown. Highly recommended!
Food is great but avoid during peak times. Service is unfortunately very slow when they are busy! Would still go for the food but wouldn’t go on Friday or Saturday evenings for sure because of service issues.
If youve ever wondered what Heinz curry soup tastes like then go to mint and mustard. Naan was nice, rice ok, but not 1 curry in sight!! It was more like chicken in tomato soup and lightly spiced lamb stew. Soooo much sauce. And no "tikka" on the chicken, just plain chicken stewed in a bland tomato soup. No flavour. We drove an hour to come here as the reviews were good, but it was so disappointing. Was greeted by a rude guy who seemed reluctant to serve us or answer any questions. The guy who delt with the complaint had a good 20 minutes of excuses up his sleeves. And just kept going on and on about the recipes and how theyd never change. It was bizarre ... I dont know what its usually like here but it appeared as though the food is made in large quantities ready to go as it was brought to us in less than 7 minutes of ordering and tasted watered down. Just buy a packet of Spice Taylor for £2 in Asda, trust me you can do better than this.
First time here and I have to say the food and service was fantastic. Especially with the added bonus of eat out to help out. Will definitely be recommending to all my friends and family.
Mint and Mustard is incredible. I have a few takeaway meals but visited with my daughter and newly relocated mum on the 18th August three weeks after it opened after Lockdown. The food was excellent. You may have to wait a little but this food is freshly prepared by a great chef. It is worth the wait. My Rara Gosht was superb. A unique recipe for mutton which definitely delivers. I fully recommend this restaurant.
Wow. Indian cuisine at it’s absolute best. Beautiful food and charming service. A must for anyone wanting a great dining experience.
Good Indian but slightly disappointed by some of the dishes: the entree king prawns were basically deep fried and the fish curry was a bit overpowering. The lentil daal was really delicious.Staff was very friendly and accommodating
Absolutely amazing food here! Atmosphere is stylish and inviting. Service warm and friendly - although as another reviewer put it can sometimes be a little confused especially on busy nights - but doesnt take away from an amazing culinary experience. First place we wanted to and go after lockdown and didnt disappoint. Love these guys.
This place!! Wowsers.Such a good curry.Mint and Mustard across Cardiff are always good, I must say penarth is the best of the best. Lovely looking restaurant, staff very very nice and always at hand. Food is outstanding.
A lovely restaurant with good service. The staff are kind and courteous and the food is lovely. The menu wasnt as full as I was expecting, but the dishes they served were beautiful.
Without question the best Indian food in South Wales. Indeed, Im struggling to think of any place in the UK that I like better. The meats are cooked well and the dishes arent greasy. Service is usually friendly but can be slow and confused, hence the reason for giving only four stars. Certainly that doesnt stop me from coming here, though. Highly recommended but be patient.
I have lived all over the world and tried curry’s from 100’s of vendors. However this truly is the best Indian cuisine I have ever had. You can taste that the food is of such a high quality and consistently delicious. Whenever I come back to Penarth Mint and Mustard is a must, whether you are eating in the restaurant or picking up a takeaway. The restaurant menu has a few extra options, the scallops for starter being my absolute favourite! My usual dishes include the onion pakora, saag paneer, Allepey prawn curry (just absolutely magical in every way!!), pilau rice & poppadoms. If you ever have the chance to dine here or pickup a takeaway, do! Amazing amazing restaurant!
Good choice of dishes at reasonable prices. Service on starters very good but quite slow when it came to drinks and main meals but it was very busy. We were overcharged for two dishes we didnt have but this was corrected when we pointed it out. My dhansak wasnt quite what I expected but very enjoyable all the same.
Food is good and different from the standard Curry House. Price is fair for good quality Indian.Service was a bit slow, though in fairness it was a busy night. But that would wouldveade it 5 star.Got dessert on the house to make up for that.
Great family celebration. We were very well looked after by the friendly and attentive staff. Every course was superb, probably the best Indian restaurant we have been to. Loved the starters especially the scallops. The prawn curry was delicious as was the dessert. We will be going again. 😀
Food was ok, mango dishes were too bitter for my palette but meat was cooked well. Slightly overpriced. Worst was, we went for a meal with my husband and 2 very young children for Mother’s Day and ordered 2 mains, starters, 4 side dishes and 2 alcoholic beverages which came to £60. It was advertised that Mum’s eat for free, I searched for terms and conditions and even rang to double check and they said my main would be free and when my husband went to pay, the staff member instantly became aggressive saying that we didn’t buy enough mains to get the deal and swiped the card out of my husbands hand in anger trying to explain himself! Staff ended up giving us the main free “out of curtesy”, but it would have been nice to be told this ahead of time, as they could clearly see we were there for a Mother’s Day meal, and I would have happily brought another main (though this would have been more than we would have been able to eat), to save the embarrassment and argument during the only time I got to spend with my children on Mother’s Day after working all day! Appalling service, very disappointed, wouldn’t recommend or return!
Lovely staff. Food to be honest, not that great. A thimble full of 3 dips to accompany the traditional poppadoms. Those who had the lamb rogan josh, said although the meat was tender, there was very little in the way of taste. My own chicken murgh was very nice.Although it is customary to provide heated wipes in Indian restaurants, I feel cloth flannels which were not to be laundered and recycled, needs addressing. Deserts overpriced
Good food, efficient, friendly service, prices slightly on the high side. Restaurant lacking in atmosphere, but it was a Monday so very quiet. Restaurant easy to find, easy parking.Would recommend, especially for a special occasion, but get a Groupon, bring the cost down a bit. We all lived the food & will visit again.
Located in Penarth, you would think Mint and Mustard would struggle to gather any traction when it comes to food. At a time when Indian food is everywhere and as its sharing a postcode with the only Michelin starred restaurant in South Wales, I am amazed to tell you how wonderful this place is. The atmosphere is cosy but not cramped meaning the staff can be attentive but not overbearing, also allowing you and your guests to have an excitable, open conversation without annoying the other diners. The dining area is lit and decorated with ambiance in mind, combining traditional with modern in a fabulously interesting way. Enough of that though, a restaurant is nothing without delicious food and M&M has an abundance of that.A six course sample menu was the order of the day and each dish was prepared with the utmost care, setting off an orchestra for your eyes, nose and mouth on arrival. Every plate was better than the last, weaving a tapestry of flavours and setting you on a culinary journey of excitement and intrigue. This is Indian cuisine like you have never had before and a million miles away from the lamb madras you had delivered the other week. Simply spectacular. If I could find one fault, it was the dessert however, by this point I was already satisfied beyond comprehension so it was purely a palette cleanser for taste buds that didnt want to be cleansed.Would recommend without hesitation. A must visit.
A friendly welcome followed by great service and delicious food. A special mothers day menu providing tasters of a range of starters, mains and dessert. Each dish had a unique spice palate. Food well presented. Comfortable pleasant ambience; very clean and tidy. I hope to return to try more from the main menu.
This place is above and beyond the beat indiand restaurant I have ever visited. I’ve had many great meals there over the past years and really enjoy the intricacies of their flavours. It’s a well thought out menu that exceeds anything I have come across. My most recent visit was the best yet, I visited with a bigger food snob than myself and we decided on the taster menu, which left us both absolutely mezmorised for days afterwards. They continue to excced my expectations everytime. It also has one of the nicest atmospheres in any surrounding restaurants. There is another branch in Heath but I would prefer to recommend this one in particular. I think it is in a league of their own.
I cannot deny, on the whole, superb food but let down by awful service. I had to open the wine myself ,as the waitress had clearly been given no training. We waited 20 minutes to order, a further 15 minutes for drinks to arrive. Extremely inattentive, and my wife and I left feeling largely satisfied but rather neglected. A bit of a disappointing night.
Recently visited and sampled the Tasting Menu 2. The food was good I cannot dispute that however I felt it was a meal rather than an experience as has been in other places that offer multi course tasting menus. The restaurant itself was really smart and clean and the staff were pretty good but wouldve like them to have explained each course, that wouldve added to the evening. Since last visit I popped in with a friend and our food and service was really good.
Good quality food, but way overpriced. Had the veggie tasting menu - it was pretty much what youd get in any other Indian restaurant. Atrocious service - so slow.
