100 ft. neon-lit star & regional landmark overlooking Roanoke from the top of Mill Mountain.
Something to do with a nice view of the city and the Blue Ridge mountains. There are some nice trails if you are looking for some exercise or the zoo right nearby. Definitely looks more impressive lit up at night.
It was a beautiful day wanted to send some pictures back to Ohio and to my brother in Alaska
Good spot in Roanoke. Beautiful views of the city and the mountains. Star is a great landmark. Limited parking on the star point. There are restrooms available.
There is no better place to view Roanoke from and at night its even better! The start truly is an incredible sight as well! It is massive!
You can driver right up to the star. Its super cool. If youve got a little extra time in Roanoke, I highly suggest this. Its beautiful views and is just a super neat thing to see. Easy walk to the star if you drive to the talk. I suggest it for a little detour.
Nice attraction in Roanoke, Virginia. Excellent views from the star. Parking may be limited. There is a gazebo that you may be able to rent or reserve. An organization appeared to be having a community event there.
This place overlooking Roanoke and surrounding areas is absolutely beautiful at any time of the year. I enjoy going in the summer and fall. Its very beautiful when the leaves are starting to turn colors in the fall. The STAR used to be colorful with white and RED lights on at night, now its just plain white. I personally like the colorful lights better! But the view is amazing at The Mill Mountain Star!
Beautiful at night looking out over the city and standing underneath the ⭐
Cool place, very pretty. The star is huge. The day we went it was raining and really overcast so we werent able to see anything from the overlook but Im sure it would have been fantastic and the trails seemed really cool so Im sure we will go back! I would probably try to plan it where you could have time to hike around some of the trails and end when it is getting dark so you could see the star lit up and the city.
Truly unique local landmark. You can drive up from near the downtown area, or access it from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Adequate parking at the top, if the crowds arent too large. You can also hike up, taking approximately 50 minutes one way, and get a little exercise.
Magnificent place! Its a beautiful area to stop and relax and take in the breath taking view of Roanoke and the Blue Ridge Mountains. I HIGHLY recommend a stop here!
If your in Roanoke then this is definitely on your to do list. Try to head up the mountain just before the sunset to get an amazing view over the valley. We stayed until it got dark so we could watch airplanes landing at the airport and catch some of the city lights. Its an Instagram hot spot, so get your selfie!!!
Spectacular view of the Roanoke skyline, would definitely recommend visiting! You can get quite close to the star. The view at night is awesome but the park gates close at 11.
Stopped here 9/5/22 for a quick touristy visit while in town for work trip. Beautiful forest up a mountain and the view is lovely! Started raining so we couldnt go waking around but Id recommend visiting!
I was reluctant to check it out since its just a big neon sign on a hill. But the views of the city at night are beautiful and the scale of the sign is pretty impressive. If youre in the area its worth a quick stop.
Truly enjoyed visiting the star. Wonderful views and it’s a very nice walk to the star. Has a playground, picnic tables, and more! Highly recommend. The star is also lit up at night. Will come back !
If visiting Roanoke, this is a must visit location. This place offers a breathtaking view of the Roanoke Valley and the City of Roanoke.
If youve never been, definitely go see the Roanoke Star. Lots of info and history to learn about up there. And the view is killer!!!
Easy. Drive right up to the star and park. No hike required. Beautiful views. Open until 11pm.
Super easy drive to a parking lot up top. Bathrooms available. Beautiful view!
Great overlook for Roanoke. I hope to see it lit up at night sometime as well as explore some more in the park. It began raining just as we got there so hope to go again. There are trails and gardens nearby
Easy access with parking close by. Also with a high probability of seeing a couple get engaged 🥰
The view from Mill Mountain was great even though the weather was not so great! Even with limited visibility and rain on our heels we were still able take in a pretty nice view from the vantage point at the base of the star. From what I could see the trails were nice(at the beginning at least)wish the weather was nicer so we could have meandered about for awhile. The restrooms…well…for guys I hope you don’t have IBS or another sensitive tummy issue. Ladies I would just hold it seriously! It’s not worth it!
As always the view of Roanoke is great from here. However, I had the not so brilliant idea to come up to the star to watch the 4th of July fireworks and that was an epic fail. We could not see them at all. They were being let off at Rivers Edge Park.
When family comes in town we head into Roanoke to eat lunch, do a little shopping and then head to the Star. Youll catch a great view in either the day or night.
Beautiful place. Im not usely a city person but looking down at the city of Roanoke is breathtaking
Great up close view of the Star. Take in views of the valley and downtown from the observation deck. Small parking lot with a very short walk. There are trails so you can hike up if you like. Rustic building with restrooms but no TP at the time of my visit.
A beautiful place to visit. The view is spectacular!!!
Really nice views. The star is worth seeing.
It’s a local icon and a great way to view the Roanoke Valley. The general area has a bunch of hiking and biking trails along with a zoo and wildflower garden.
Awesome views...was visiting Roanoke for the first time and didnt get to spend much time checking the place out but had enough time to go up and take a look. Definitely recommend it to anyone passing through, or making it a destination. Theres a zoo/wildlife exhibit up top as well but not sure of the details on that. We will be back again soon.
Ive driven by the Star on many drives through Roanoke...and finally made a trip with a friend recently; worth it! I would like to see it after dark, but seein the urban sprawl of the city, mixed with the mountain views was spectacular during the day. There is no cost to drive up to the overlook, and not much of a walk to the monument. Park area is clean and well maintained, with historical and informational signage.Definitely a great place to spend the day...there are other attractions nearby, including but not limited to the zoo, the discovery center, and hiking trails.
Our family enjoyed the view! The mountain biking was fun. When I walked our dog on the trail below the Star, we were greeted with so much broken glass. I thought it would be okay once I got into the forest area, but there was broken glass along the entire trail. I had to carry out dog. Bummer!
Really fun place to be with friends---cured our boredom and gave us some spectacular views. Well-kept and a super pleasant drive/walk. Must-see if visiting Roanoke. Parking/bathrooms available.
Great views, nice road leading up to it. Just overall a great experience
Wonderful place. Just moved to Roanoke and I can honestly say Im more in love than ever with my life.
What a cool cultural landmark! Its easy to get to, just drive up the mountain following the signs. The overlook of the city is great, and there are hiking trails all around.
The view here is incredible! It is a great place to get a quick bit of exercise (especially if you’re like me, and enjoy shorter hikes)! Thankfully the area is kept clean of trash and green with vibrant, beautiful nature aspects! I highly recommend a trip here if you’re visiting the area or simply have never been before. Whether it’s simply for the walk, photogenic properties, or to enjoy the surroundings this is a must-see location for residents and visitors alike!
The drive up is clearly marked & the roads are in good shape. Theres a small parking lot at the top behind the star. Theres a viewpoint to look out at the city & signs describing the mountains & the history of the star. We went on a foggy, rainy night so we couldnt see much at the viewpoint but the star was clearly visible & bright.
Almost 20 mins drive from Roanoke, this is an ideal getaway for half a day. Great if you have elderly who don’t want to hike a lot but still want picturesque views and a taste of hiking.Parking was easy. I even spotted a bike fixing stand if you like to take a bike here. Also if you’re there then definitely visit the zoo. I saw a bald eagle for the first time here. So majestic. All in all a great place to get a taste of Virginias nature.
I love visiting this park! Clean facilities, lots of maps and information, and a sweet little discovery center just before the parking lot at the top. Lots of trails, short and long, some paved and some natural, single track sections that wrap around the mountain with many lovely views of the city below. A beautiful park, even in the late fall/winter, free to get into and explore, very well-maintained. A must-visit if youre in SW VA.
Beautiful views!! Only God my Jesus could do this. Great place to go!×
Roanoke’s iconic spot and viewpoint of the Roanoke valley. If visiting the Star City, this is for sure a must do.11/7/2021 - Had a chance to revisit, but this time we were here in the fall. Beautiful day for a short drive from downtown.
A great way to see the Roanoke Valley that is accessible to everyone. There is a playground for kids, plenty of picnic tables, a shelter, and a nice walkway. There are two parking lots with one being right next to the star with quick access to the star and the second lot being at the bottom of a hill so its a steep walk on a paved path but it was fine walking a stroller up.
Five stars for the big star, the main attraction of the Star City of Roanoke, VA. Steeped in old history and topped with new school pride, going up to the Star is a must for all newcomers, offering the best views of the city of Roanoke and the surrounding Mountain Ranges, as well as the best natural areas to enjoy freely. There is also a wicked cool playground made from 90% natural elements.
Atop Mill Mountain in Roanoke VA. A.K.A. The Star City. Some say its the Hollywood sign of the East Coast.. The structure is 88 1/2 feet tall and is illuminated at night.. There is a viewing platform where you can see the Star and also over look the city, there is also hiking trails, a small botanical garden with local species of plants and a Z00
Beautiful place to visit and spend time. Great trails to walk. Scenery galore. Outstanding view of Roanoke and the mountains beyond. Lot of history. Plus, many many times driving I-81 and being able to see that star when its dark enough for it to be lit up.
This was a very nice stop with a very pretty view! Free! Very open and a few spots to see the view with bathrooms. A couple parking spots to park at with a garden, mini playground and zoo!
The star is an amazing structure and the view from the overlook is incredible! We went to see the sunrise, so we got a great view of the city at night followed by gorgeous pinks, blues and oranges at dawn. A must see if youre in the area.
Easy access to this free attraction. Some parking at the star but more down the hill which has a paved access trail up to the star. There are public bathrooms available at the top too. Great view of the city from the lookout patio. Some of the walkways are paved, some are gravel between 4x4 lumber and finally some dirt trails. At the discovery center there is a trail condition indicator that is updated by users.
