Cozy local institution serving hearty portions of breakfast fare at communal tables.
So much has already been said about MDB. The friendly folks you meet in line, the coffee cake you always order to slake your waiting in line hunger. The pancakes 🥞 are outsized and delicious and everything else is well prepared and delicious. Remember to bring cash. They dont take credit cards
Love this place. We include it in every trip to Madison. Shakes, burgers, fries, classic breakfast and lunch diner food. Cant be beat.
Just glad it was a cool, misty, early Saturday morning on campus and that the Badgers had an away game. Otherwise, theres not a chance youd be able to walk into this institution like we did today. The food is beyond good. Its incredible and theres a lot of it. If the fresh baked pans of coffee cake arent enticing enough, the Griddle Cakes and Scramblers will take your breath, and your appetite away. Run, dont walk here. But be aware, theres often a line out the door. Its that good. Unless your timing is perfect like ours was this morning.
Great pancakes and eggs, pretty fast even though it was busy, nice waiter and good service
First time at this location. Food is good and plenty of it!! I had the banana nut pancakes and my son had the cheeseburger and fries. Both were very good portion sizes. I could not eat all of my pancakes as they were too big!!!This is a cash only diner so plan accordingly. Prices are low but the portions are huge.Had brunch here today. Ruban omelette with yanks!! Super delicious. Had to take leftovers home!! Look forward to returning!!
Great little diner with fantastic food. A classic breakfast spot in Madison. The pancakes are top notch.
Awesome little place that everyone must check out! Prices are very fair but the atmosphere and old-timey theme is something extremely unique about this place. Good food, I should have got breakfast. They do not take anything but cash!
How could you not love Mickies? Perfect for breakfast or lunch, very good food, large portions and reasonable prices. The retro atmosphere is great!
I love the old time atmosphere of the restaurant and how they haven’t changed any of that since they first started. However, it is quite crowded and loud inside and although the line outside did move fast, you still do have to wait outside. The fries were very good and the burger was pretty average. It wasn’t bad but nothing amazing. Overall I think this restaurant is cool for the appearance of the building and food is quite average.
Great service, great prices, and great food.. Only complaint was that it was a little warm inside but it’s understandable since the place is semi small and super busy with people! Couldn’t recommend this place enough!! Thanks Mickies!
Nothing was wrong with this place, but for me, I dont understand the legendary status. Had a veggie omelet with pepper jack cheese. Not sure all veggies were fresh and they were minimal.Ill try the pancakes next time.
I love this place, and by the way I installed the black and red tile floor 35 years ago. Its still there! But yes, it does need repair. Five stars for the floor, and the omelets are also fantastic.
Great place. It is a basic old school diner, so dont expect anything fancy. Food is simple and expected. Service is always good. It is small, so it can get packed quickly. The prices have gone up a tad, but it far less expensive than a ton of other locations in and around the University and Downtown.
Our waiter was so nice. Food was good. I should have gotten one pancake instead of two, they are so big!
Very quaint and historical place. I remember coming here in the late 70s and 80s and nothing has changed. Food (breakfaststill great with just the right sized portions. Staff funny and courteous. Street parking is metered so be sure to have change. You can get in and out in less than 45 minutes if you time it right. Would go back again and again if I could just to try all the items on the menu (lunch).
Everyone was nice and friendly good service but the scrambler is nasty dude too much cheese and it’s probs plastic cheese it looks like my barf after a long night of drinking. would recommend a burger instead.
The food is incredible. Get one of the scratch made cinnamon rolls, you wont regret it!
My first time there, and I got emotional. Its just old school, hometown, homemade goodness. I watched them make everything. No heat and eat here. The moment of pause you find yourself in while in their company is very curative and rejuvenating. And the best thing about it....you always find room for something sweet.
It was a very cute place to go. It was crowded but that is kinda the appeal. We got brunch and it was amazing!! We literally could only finish half of our meals. The service was fast and it was a cool experience! Definitely recommend!
We got there after the grill was suppose to shut down, but they brought us in and took our order. It came promptly and the food was as good as a Jonathan Davis jumper. Our waiter, the musician, was a great server and conversationalist. Retro diner 5 stars.
The sign of a good restaurant is one that can be slamming busy and still turn over tables! This place was popping but we only waited maybe 20 minutes! Great food fast service and a cute decor.
came on recommendation. scramble for breakfast feeds like 3 people easily and is just $10. and it was awesome. didnt have the pancakes but they looked incredible. bigger is better rules here. all the dishes could feed many people. service was very friendly. and didnt have to wait when we arrived at 11:45am on a Sat.
Amazing ambience as always and really good food! I ordered the Cajun chicken sandwich with cheese curds and they were just bomb!! Place is crowded as always for the weekend brunch .. so plan accordingly !You could never go wrong at Mickies with scrambler , pancakes or the shakes !!
I had cheese curds and veggie omelette for breakfast. Cheese curds were tasting excellent. Omelette was just ok.Service was excellent.
This place is a GEM. tiny lil hole in the wall. The food was really really good. The scrambler was huge. The gravy that comes with it is off the hook amazing. Super nice waitress. She was amazing. Five stars all the way on this one folks.
This was the first time weve eaten here and it did not disappoint. Our server Victoria gave us some great recommendations since we had not eaten here before. Portions are large. My husband got the scrambler which he really enjoyed. I tried the delicious buttermilk pancakes and apple coffee cake. Looking forward to coming back and trying other items on the menu.
This is one of those places where you can actually be excited to go. I love their omelettes. Great portion to price ratio. Pancakes here are much better than most. The menu has a good variety as well. Customer service is also great.
Came in Sunday at 9 and were able to sit without a wait. Friendly service and the food came out very fast. Great prices, especially for the large serving sizes. We will be back!
First time going to Mickies and wow what an experience. I love old places that have items from their past and Mickies does this in spades from the menues on the walls to the coke machine that was here before us and will be here long after us. The service was great and the food was fenomminal. If you have a moment you should definitely stop in.
This place is an absolutely gem. Ive been going here for 10 years and it is always amazing. Old-school diner food that is great. This place is always busy on weeknds; expect to wait.
Very cool place to dine. Huge portions and great food.
Food and service was fast. Patty melt and yanks (potatoestasted great, but the chocolate chip pancakes were only okay according to the rest of the table. One of the orders of pancakes maybe had batter that wasnt mixed well, but the taste and texture were really off. We didnt eat any of it, so the staff replaced it with an omelette for us super quick at no charge. Staff and speed were very impressive for how busy the place was. I would definitely come back to try some other food in the future.
I ordered 2 eggs, 3 sausage links, 3 pcs of bacon, one sausage patty, cinnamon roll French toast and a strawberry milkshake Everything was subpar and expensive I wont be returning.
Visited from out of state before the Penn State vs. University of Wisconsin football game on 9/2/21.Must stop for anyone visiting Madison for the first time. Exactly the type of place you would see on ESPN’s college football “Campus Eats” tour hosted by Todd Blackledge. You get a massive amount of food for such a cheap price! Definitely want to go here on an empty stomach - a true throwback!Only complaint is the place is cash only/no credit cards
Great little spot for breakfast, have to go the scrambler with sausage, green peppers & mushrooms with gravy.
Nice meal with very friendly and cozy environment! The owner is super friendly :)
Great experience. Was just riding by on my bike and saw it. Its an old school diner so no Beermosas or mimosas. The diner is traditional and if youre into that style of restaurants youll love this place! Tons of classic breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Savanna was my server and she was super friendly and helpful. Thanks for the Reuben is was excellent!
Just as good as I remember from college! My husband swears that they have the best corned beef and hash that hes ever had. If you want to get in without a wait, especially on the weekend, show up early - theyre definitely busy by 8:30 or 9 am.You wont go away hungry!
Great diner! The whole place was cozy and warm. Service was super nice and friendly. Food was delicious and fresh. We got the scrambler, the reuben Omelette, the strawberry pancakes, and the coffee malt and they all tasted just fantastic. The cheese in the omelette and the scrambler was so good and just the right amount (dont get me wrong it was a ton but just right). And the gravy on the scrambler was phenomenal. Now the strawberry pancakes were the best Ive had in a while. Finally, the malt. It was so good and the perfect addition to this feast.Would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a hearty breakfast/brunch/lunch.
Went with a couple co-workers for a mid-morning Saturday brunch before a long shift, and it was a great experience. Busy, but good overall buzz and atmosphere, plus the prices are reasonable and the portions are big. Not to mention its in a prime location! Little bit of a wait time, but thats to be expected for the area. Had about a 25 minute wait for 3 - not bad!
HUMONGOUS Meals. Great food, great service, great environment. Love this place, dont know why we dont come more often. Pancakes were the size of a Wisconsin dinner plate and over an inch thick. Everything tasted great, theres a good mix of healthy or indulgent options, you wont be disappointed.
Very old school diner. Specialising in breakfast and shakes. Table or counter service. Good value/come hungry because portions are generous. Waitress was very helpful with suggestions of specialties. Note: CASH only.
Really great local spot! The host did a great job getting/fitting various parties in to maximize the space. Our waiter did a terrific job and was very knowledgeable. The breakfast! We got the scrambles, pancakes, corn beef hash, and a malt. All very delicious and large portioned! Very happy with our experience - we will be back!
One of the best places to go in Madison for breakfast. The portion of food is mind blowing. Definitely try the classic scrambler (pictured). Its a mix of yanks, omelet, gravy, and loads of cheese. Two meals in one! The banana nut pancakes are great, but you cant go wrong with any of the options. My experience with customer service was top notch for a diner. Expect a long line for the weekend rush hour.
Had a scrambler with ham and cheddar and corned beef gravy. Shared a cinnamon roll, if you really like cinnamon, its a must-try. Huge portions! The cheddar cheese tasted really good No wait, food was delivered very quickly by a friendly and attentive waitress.
We went for breakfast and it was a great place to go for good food and really good value. It is very small and I wouldnt advise really large groups go unless you have time to kill. Also they will not sit anyone until everyone in the party is there. They are a cash only establishment but they have an ATM on site to use of needed. We had the scrambler and it was great! It is a ton of food, but the cheese and gravy is fantastic. For next time I would get extra gravy on the side because the potatoes are lightly seasoned and can lack flavor if you dont eat all of the ingredients together.
Love this place. I used to be the paperbpy fornthe neighborhood 40 years ago. I would have.breakfest and do my route. Today french toast and bacon. Friend had hash browns smothered in cheese and wnglia muffin. Service was awsome. The booth seemed to keep getting smaller? Love it
I had been hearing all about Mickies so I finally caved and went for breakfast on a Saturday morning.I ordered the pancakes, but they were so big and dry. My boyfriend ordered the chili omelet which was outstanding, so I definitely would suggest that. They only accept cash too, which conveniently they have an ATM there if it catches you by surprise like us.The decor was cute, straight out of the 1950s ish era. The biggest downfall for me was how small and crowded this place is. For being so popular, you would think they would invest in a larger space. People were on top one another and it was very uncomfortable to eat there. You felt rushed to eat, especially as the line of people outside waiting to get in stared at you.I dont think I will go back due to that. The food didnt impress me too much to make the trip either.
Wonderful restaurant rich in history, and amazing food with huge portions. Loved how the menu is up on the wall, and that the whole feel is old timey. Make sure to bring cash to pay! That’s how old school this gem is.
Just go, but go hungry. Very friendly, great service. My coffee never got below half. Food was great. Restroom was very clean.
