The old town of Bratislava is different than others of Europe, very small and well organized with little shops

Its generally pretty, but it needs some more restauration of the old town and too many foreign cheap restaurants like dozens of kebab stands really ruin the atmosphere of a slavic old town.

The gate is located in the historic center of Bratislava, the old part of town. The gates basically separate the old and the new parts of the city. There are a lot restaurants, cafes and small traditional stores around the location, definitely worth going there.

Bratislava is a lovely place on summer and well worth a visit. We arrived by boat which is even better. St Michaels Gate is entirely encased in scaffolding at the moment and is closed to visitors but theres plenty more to see and the short climb up to the castle is well worth the slog for the view alone. Lots of shady cafes for ice cream coffee cake or larger meals.

The Michalska Gate (Michalská Bránais a symbol of Bratislava. It is crowned with a 51-meter, octagonal, Renaissance tower covered with a baroque helmet. At the top of the tower there is a figure of Archangel Michael slaying a dragon. The roof of the original gothic tower, built in the mid 14th century, was modified between 1753 and 1758 to give it its current. An octagonal tower was added over it. It is currently the only preserved city gate of Bratislava. During the reign of Maria Teresa, a baroque crown was added, and this reconstruction is commemorated by a richly decorated foundation plaque. On the street that passes through the gate is the so-called “zero kilometre” plate, listing the distances of 29 world capitals from Bratislava.Inside the gate is the Museum of Fortifications, which presents the history of the citys fortifications and the development of military technology. You can see here melee and firearms, old cannons, tournament weapons. You can also see documents, sketches and illustrations showing the history of the Bratislava city walls. From the museum you can go to the observation deck on the top floor of the tower. The superb view of the Old Town from the upper terrace of the tower is one of Bratislava’s top visitor experiences.Since 1st December 2020, Bratislava City Museum is closing the Michael’s Gate – the Museum of Weapons for approximately two years. The reason for the closure is the long-awaited general renovation of an architecturally rare building in the historic city center.

Last of the four existing main gates to medieval Bratislava or Pressburg at that time. There is a museum inside with walkway on the top of the tower. Access is from top of the SNP square or Michalská street. You can find remnants of Rybná Gate opposite of National Theatre. There are a monuments dedicated to Laurinská gate at Laurinská Street and Vydrická gate next to the St. Martins Cathedral.

Beautiful historical spot. A legend says that if you go under the gate and stay on the kilometer 0 speaking, you will die in one year and one day. Better not to play with fate and don’t speak for a while. It’s a symbol of the city.

One of the most photographic places in Bratislava. No visitant will just pass by it without being at least, little bit stunned by the cozy cuteness that it has. You can find great spots for food or drinks. Hit us up for some good recs here!

Great spot to visit in Bratislava, the street and the details of the houses and gates are so nice during winter or summer. Love this spot. There is a compass showing the distance from that spot to other many cities. Worth it.

Crowded and touristic area.Built about the year 1300, its present shape is the result of baroque reconstructions in 1758, when the statue of St. Michael and the Dragon was placed on its top. The tower houses the Exhibition of Weapons of Bratislava City Museum.

Lovely tower and gate at the top of the old town. It houses a weapons museum with displays on each floor with ancient on the bottom going to modern ish on the top. Views of the old town from here are really nice and you can walk around the tower. If you visit the red crayfish pharmacy just up the street, the ticket is good for both places. There are a lot of places to eat from point and the area is buzzing.

Within couple of squares too much detail to focus on. Every step you feel the Old Town. Enjoy your time and please attention to every inch. Sometimes, around the corner you may find a spectacle or a baroque music performance as well.

Simply magnificent. I would suggest you go at sunset, as the crowd dies down by then, and you will have the view to yourself. Unlike many tower experiences in Europe, the stairs are new and wide vs. single file, which makes things easier for the mobility impaired. There is also a historical weapons display, which may interest some.

When you’re father’s name is Michael you have to take some photos of him with the gate. (It’s bad luck not towe wanted ice cream so we walked to a small DM(Or Billathe tourist streets of old town can be a little over the top. Google does an awful job of directing you around the city as it will take you down the main tourist trap areas by default causing walking directions to take way longer than they should.

Its the first thing which told me that, Bratislava is too a lively Citi like other European Capitals. The gate actually begins to unfold the beauty of a lively and busy city. All sorts of local and international food shops are here. Night clubs, Pubs, ladies Clubs are distributed evenly and you cant find a flaw! The gate is open till 6 p.m. for visitors and can be ascended to the top of this tower, and a 5€ to spare.

In Bratislava, Slovakia, Michaels Gate is the only city gate that has been preserved of the medieval fortifications and ranks among the oldest town buildings. Built about the year 1300, its present shape is the result of baroque reconstructions in 1758, when the statue of St. Michael and the Dragon was placed on its top. The tower houses the Exhibition of Weapons of Bratislava City Museum. In the medieval times the town was surrounded by fortified walls, and entry and exit was only possible through one of the four heavily fortified gates. On the east side of the town, it was the Laurinc Gate, named after Saint Lawrence, in the south it was the Fishermens Gate (Halász kapu), (Rybná brána). This was the smallest gate of the four, used mainly by the fishermen entering the city with fish caught in the river Danube. On the west side it was the Vydrica Gate (Vödric kapu), (Vydrická brána), also called the Dark Gate or Black Gate, since it was like a tunnel—dark and long. In the north, there was St. Michaels Gate named after St. Michael and the St. Michael church that stood in front of it (outside the town wall). Later on it was put down and materials gained from it were used in the building of additional town walls.

Museum of arms + terrace high above city centre. Museum takes you through the entire history of arms around Bratislava. From ancient to modern times with a couple of foreign arms on top. View from the tower terrace gives you a view of the large part of the city centre from above. Definitely a go to place during sunny days in Bratislava.

A fabulous historical part of Bratislava. One of the original gates that allowed traffic to enter and exit the city which was surrounded by a wall. A must see and it can also be seen in many areas of the city.
