Mexico Ponsonby - Mexican restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand
Closed an hour earlier... Have read the previous reviews and people have had a similar experience. Food wasnt up to the mark. The jackfruit quesidilla was shocking, definitely not worth the price we paid for quantity of food served. Drinks were great & staff were polite. A definite no no that the 3 staff approached us telling us that the kitchen was closing at 8.30pm when we got there at 8.15pm. Wont be going back! Thoroughly disappointed!
Great food and customer service!
good food, great atmosphere
A delicious restaurant - some of the nicest Mexican food I’ve had for a while. Unlike some, the portion sizes were not massive, nor were the dishes drowning in cheese. The drinks were good too - my Bohemian beer was an excellent Mexican Pilsner (who knew?while the lemon lime soda tasted much nicer than a usual soft drink.
Love fried chicken! However a bit burnt crisp.
Fantastic food and beverages. Excellent atmosphere with cool art everywhere. Staff are helpful and friendly. Highly recommend. I will always come back when visiting Auckland. Thanks for a fabulous evening
Great food! Ordered the set menu for lunch and was hit with so much food! From tacos to fried chicken and quesadillas. Their margarita mixes well with the food and you wont regret it. Top it off with friendly staff!
Great food and drinks, friendly staff. Uncomfortable seating
Really good meal with some great service. Margaritas were nice too
They actually close an hour earlier than advertised. Happened to me multiple times. Poor advertising.
Not sure what happened, but this place must have been having an off-night.The nachos were bearable. What used to be a real good dish of the mex style chicken nibbles, just tasted slightly better than boneless KFC.The cocktails were a tad bit disappointing. The chilli and line salt on the glass rim tasted much better than any of the 3 heavily sweetened carafes we had.Id love to visit again and improve this review. I give credit where credit is due and unfortunately there was none due that night. The staff and service were really good and extremely professional. It reminded me of the violinists who stuck it out and kept playing their violins on the Titanic, while it sank.
Awesome food Awesome staff Awesome Margs 👌 can get really busy on the weekends but they do there best to accommodate
Good atmosphere, great venue, amazing service, delicious food and drinks.
Service was sloooowwww but the food was so freakin tasty so it was kinda worth it. Plus the margaritas are always a treat. Just super slow, took 15mins to get my first drink.
The food was tasty but nothing close to resembling Mexican cuisine. The taco had a closer resemblance to roti. kind of embarrassing. I hope nobody takes ther mexican friends here. They will be offended. Atleast disclose that it’s like fusion cuisine or something. The table service was awful and lack lustre, nice girls but totally unprofessional and ditsy. our family ordered a lot of food and The table remained dirty and uncleared when desert arrived. dersert was half frozen. trash. No recomend. Seems like something some rich white property developer owns and has neglected.
Pretty bog standard Mexican cuisine, was nice though. Had the quesadilla which was nice but needed more seasoning. Food came fast however and the service was good. Plus churros
Food was good and comes out quick however portions were very disappointing for the price
I got take away/ubereats from here just now and I can say the food is delicious. Both me and my partner have different tastes and we both like the food from here. The fried cauliflower tastes just like fried chicken its amazing. Best tasting vegetable in the world when presented like this. The bag had "gracias" written on it which just made my day. I love this restaurant.
Had a wonderful meal here with my sister. Decided last minute to eat in Ponsonby and was attracted by the vibes and decor of the place. We were ushered in by the most friendly staff, Oliver, who then took our orders with wit and attentiveness. Drinks and food arrived quite quickly, and were all beautifully made with fresh ingredients. We ordered the guacamole and chips, pork belly and a selection of tacos. Really can’t think of anything to complain about except if they could sell the guac in large containers to take home. The cocktails were also fresh and well balanced - with even sugar free varieties offered. I look forward to returning to this gem of a place soon with great anticipation to try out the other items on the menu.
Tasty kitchen with beautiful smiley people, we enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Definitely be back!
Delicious fried chicken, we didn’t like the Nachos as much.Great atmosphere though.
Good beer good tacos - I rate the chef(sworking on Wednesday the 16th. Variety of sexy little micro greens and toasted papitas on my tacos little grill on the tortillas. Not too spicy just the right level of heat. And the beer was cold 👍
Staff and service were good. Food came in quick. Taste is ok, full of flavour. Pricey in my opinion and portion size a bit small.
Food was average, nothing to rave on about. Spicy chicken wasnt spicy, the fish taco was nice. Staff were friendly and the food came out fairly quick.
Ok I have no idea what kind of food this place serves but it is not Mexican. Decor may be reminiscent of fake Mexican but the food is so far from real Mexican it’s scary. I mean when was the last time you found Brussel sprouts or Broccoli as sides in Mexican, Quesadilla with no sour cream. Mexicans would die. No refried beans. I mean how can a Mexican restaurant have no refried beans. It’s like the chef tried to localize Mexican cuisine and just completely lost the plot. Margaritas tasted like cheap kids cordial. Sad. If you’ve had a good margarita in Southern California or Mexico then just order beer. They hopefully can’t screw that up. Maybe my expectations were too high but if you claim to be an ethnic restaurant be that. Dining tip. Find another place.
Food is delicious (spicy cauliflower florets!as is the sugar free lemonade.Servers have always been very nice, and even got a plastic container of water for my dog when we sat outside.Always a pleasure going, the lunch time deals are especially good.
Fantastic atmosphere, friendly staff and fabulous food! Even though there were plenty of other people inside, the food was delivered in record time. We also really enjoyed the margaritas and were lucky enough to get the deal with tacos. The fried chicken was absolutely tasty, though less spicy than expected - easily solved with the yummy hot sauce provided. Had a lovely experience here and would definitely recommend!
Cool place with interesting mexican images around. Nice vibe. Young and energetic staff. The waiter was very friendly and patiently explained the menu to us. We ordered quesadillas (chicken and beefeach portion $19. It can be shared between two if youre not so hungry. The Mexican traditional drink made with rice and cinnamon topping is really tasty. Recommended!!!
My sons (9 and 5and I went in for dinner last week -Tuesday, April 13th. The staff were all so sweet and accomodating to us. They brought out kids menus and crayons for the kids. My son had a specific request for his nachos, and they were so kind to accomodate his request. Thank you to the entire staff there that night (especially the young man from Venezuela), my kids kept going on about what a great night it was :)
Some staff were not too friendly and others were. I would say come for the tacos as they were pretty tasty, I didn’t know what to expect, but some tacos were better than others, like the beef was the best one. Patatas bravas were ok, the quesadilla was ok. The drinks were very tasty, I had a sangria.
Good mexican food. The decor is outstanding. The place is not really quite, but got some interesting vibes. Prices are reasonable and got many good options for food and drink.I feel the place is mostly busy in the weekends. I would recommend it 👌
Dined here in a group Saturday gone.Staff were responsive, accurate and friendly throughout the 3(?hours we were there. They even made it special for us considering we were a group of colleagues who had all been made redundant several months ago. Food was good, atmosphere was good, and complies with covid rules. Thanks
I ordered the chimichanga it was very small for the price and resembled chinese egg rolls more than a chimichanga. I also ordered pork belly burger which was not authentic Mexican they seem to use chinese spices. The pork was very fatty, was served with slaw and on a sweet brioche with a yoghurt sauce. As a Texan, Mexican food should be abundant, cheap and delicious and this was none of these.
Great food, great location, lovely staff. Not all too many veggie options, but the ones they do offer are fantastic. Recommend the pulled jackfruit quesidilla. Only thing I would recommend is serving standard size beers. Glasses werent full size but everything else was amazing. Cheers guys
Very tasty food. Unexpectedly not really oily. Friendly staff and interesting design( I really like pictures on the left wall).
Great food, the fried chicken was amazing and the staff were friendly. Food was really tasty, and the sangria is definitely recommended. Our group really enjoyed it.
One of the best fried chicken!!! A new menu every season which so there’s always new things to try
The food was amazing here when I came with a few colleagues. The tacos were fantastic (I had the chicken, pork and beefand the snacks were tried were also great (the corn, croquettes and Mexican chicken). The place does seem slightly crowded though and our food did take a long time to come out, but Id probably still come here again if Im craving the delicious food.
Food is amazing here. Mexico chicken, croquettes, fish tacos, pork carnitas tacos were the standout. The sangria is very refreshing as well. Service is a little slow (we waited almost 40 mins for tacos because I think they forgot our order). reservations needed for dinner or come after 830pm. Will come back again but better service please!
Food is tasty. A bit small portion though. The price is OK. Service was good and love the decor.
Ok food and ok margaritas at ok prices. The quesadillas seem to give you the most bang for your buck as far as amount of food. The carafe is pretty small and gets you ALMOST 4 small glasses of margaritas.
Great place for a bite to eat, relatively quiet and friendly service. Came for lunch, but you can tell nights will be exceptionally loud due to where its located on Ponsonby Road. The food is delicious, comes as its ready so just keep ordering and you wont be disappointed! The fried chicken is amazing too!
Always a good time at Mexico. ESPECIALLY the Ponsonby location. Amazing service. Good food. Excellent decor. Highly recommend
We only came here for drinks but it looked like a good eatery with surprisingly interesting vegan options. The melon and mint Margherita option was lovely and refreshing - the others looked to much for me.
As the name suggests, this is a Mexican restaurant with Latino offerings. They have a wide selection of margaritas which were delicious and refreshing. Food was great, the crispy chicken and quesadillas were the highlight, the churros came out warm, very drool worthy. Service was friendly, not a long wait for food, with lots of street parking available.
Buzzing - great food, great margaritas! Definitely a good night out.
I am addicted to their black plum and cinnamon margarita. They have 10 unusual margaritas and I cant get passed this one to try the others. The food is tasty. I like their chips and smoky salsa. I had a good meat taco, the fried chicken is particularly good. The guacamole was not so good. The place is fun and nicely decorated, the staff is friendly and welcoming.
Love this place - best guacamole Ive had to date. The food is simple, yet delicious. The service is friendly and welcoming and the décor adds a nice character. If you do check it out, make sure you try the guacamole and the Mexican soda. You can thank me later
Comida increíble!! Amazing food! Soft shell taco any filling were just delicious, Mexico fried chicken oh! prefect with Corona, Shoulder Pork Quesadillas with mint, leek, salsa so Mexican so yum, green salad with jalapeño crema & queso fresco, so fresh and crispy, the Margarita selection is sinful, theyre so tasty that wed one after another, cozy and relax environment perfect for after work. Must try, Amigos!
Excellent place. Love the cocktails. Food simply yum and lots to try. Must try the fried chicken and the churros it to die for.
