Methavalai Sorndaeng - Thai restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand
True Thai experience. This was undoubtedly the best Thai cuisine we tried in Bangkok with the best Tom Yum soup we tried so far.
Bring long shirt because of AC. Great authentic Thai food. Very good service. One page for vegetarian food in the menu. Cost us 1,500 for a meal for 2
Place is really unique (deco, service, live musicwith delicious food. I was, however, expecting a bit more from the Michelin star restaurant.
Traditional elegance throughout - from the tables to the attentiveness of the staff to th presentation of the food. What a treat. So fresh and great flavors. Go here !!
This restaurant brings you back to Bangkok of the 1960s! Traditional Thai food that is unadulterated and bereft of western tweaking. Everything i ordered was great. If some haute restaurants give a play with your multiple senses like mind, emotion and visual perfection, Methavalai brings the satisfaction straight to your tummy like how grandmothers and family dinners do. Plus, you can hear the Aunties of Bangkok sing live!
Had a great time trying various michelin star dishes. The food was delicious. The staff were very nice and knowledgeable. They were helpful in selecting dishes that worked well for us.It closed quite early with last orders permitted up to 9:30pm
Authentic thai food restaurants, tatse isnt spicy as necessary, foreigner can enjoyable 😉
A Michelin star? Really?! What for? For live music and the waiters’ navy white uniform?!Good quality food but really nothing remarkable or outstanding.
If you can get past the 80’s decor and daggy setting this place is out of this world! No wonder they have a Michelin star ⭐️ we came for dinner twice during our stay and both times had incredible meals 👌🏻 my mouth waters just thinking about the pomelo salad! Can also highly recommend the som tam, shrimp tom yum, duck curry and larb. 🤤P.S. live music was an unexpected bonus 😆👍🏻
Come to listen to piano…another good one ! Recommend…Clockwise ~ pickles also taste good, pandan chicken, fried shrimp cake, spring rolls, shrimp/crab/cashew nuts crispy pancakes all goes well with beer 🍻😋Atmosphere is good, service is good as well 🤙
The food here is amazing and the catfish there is absolutely delicious. Would love to come here again in my next trip to Bangkok.
Very kitsch. Loved the singer. Extensive Thai menu. Beautiful evening view of the Democracy Monument.
Slightly overated. Although some of the dish tasted great but it still wasnt exceptional. The service could have been improved as I found the servers were pretty inattentive. Also while having plenty of space, therere very limited tables and most were placed pretty close to another ones.
Traditional atmosphere with delicious Michelin Star options. Methavalai Sorndaeng is hidden gem found during my travels in Bangkok. Simply great food and service.
Traditional Thai Food. Not worst to visit.
Beautiful restaurant. Delicious food. There is also live music. That was mesmerising. When we went there, the restaurant was almost closing. But the staff was great and they said we could take all the time we needed.
Good service, friendly staff good music by old fashion musicians and singers. Looking around, most of the customers are my age. I wished some of the old fashion dishes were on the menu again.
Old famous international restaurant in BKK for long, long time, till now, with live famous singer with piano, violin, nice tasty taste food.
Long standing Thai restaurant with old time vibes. A singer and a pianist will keep you entertained during your meal. The food is authentic Thai but price is on a high side.
Thai restaurant with blend of Chinese touch in some menus. Unique setting and vintage decoration. Staff uniform and the brass cutlery make distinct character. Live music by piano and violin fill in the vibe with cosiness.Though the place seem upscale, no dress code required. Sandals and shorts are fine. Just be neat. However, in my opinion, sport singlet will not be appropriate.Great food, exceptional service at the right price. Highly recommended for dining with family, friends or business.
Classy with long history restaurant. Authentic Thai food at reasonable price. Good vibes. Excellent service. Live music is awesome.
This is a great restaurant and very elegant .The live music adds to this .I took my thai friends here. They now use it for family celebrations. The fact that so many Thai people dine here tells me they are doing something right. .I always feel privileged to dine here. It makes me feel special.
4 consecutive year (2019-2022Michelin star restaurant with very traditional and authentic Thai food. Sublime n yummilicious.
Great flavors, service and atmosphere. Michelin star well deserved.Atmosphere: there was live piano and singer serenading the scene. Ask for a window seat and you can view the democracy monument while eating.Service: waiters and waitresses were in uniform or Thai costume. They quickly filled our glasses with water as quickly as we drink them and were attentive throughout.Flavors: ordered the spicy salad, crispy noodle and crab curry as recommended in the Michelin guide. All were delicious although not extremely memorable yet still deserving of the five stars
The quality of food was good, though not exceptional. That said, they definitely stayed true to Thai flavors and cooking methods and nailed them. Great balance of sour, sweet, spicy, salty in general. I particularly enjoyed the eggplant salad with shrimp.
Certainly good, but not particularly overwhelming. Prices are very affordable for a Michelin star restaurant, with most small portions available around 250THB.Tom Yum Goong: river prawn was large and fresh, perfectly firm. Soup itself wasnt really outstanding; essentially the same as streetside vendors.Duck curry: curry sauce itself was quite good, but the duck was really lean and felt a little dry. Ive had better in Canada (!although its surprisingly cheaper here.Shrimp and eggplant salad: honestly the standout highlight of the meal. Thai eggplant was sweet and tender, and worked well with the shallots, onions, and chilis. Shrimp was cooked well and quite large.Mango sticky rice: underwhelming at best. Mango wasnt that sweet, and the sticky rice tasted kind of stale.Overall experience: decent for the price, but very much just a fancier Thai restaurant with a star rather than something outstanding or worth going out of your way for. Service and environment were standard for fine dining.
Nice location: it’s difficult to find such a big fancy restaurant in the old town, unless it’s opening for a long time. Since this restaurant is ‘since 1957’ no wonder.Food: nice Thai food with good taste. Some of the food is not easy seen in the other restaurant. Not sure if the basil spaghetti was invented here, which is one of the best combination with Thai and western food. This restaurant wins Michelin 1 star since 2019 till now 2022. Worth visiting with the taste of history.
We’ve been here on 25th of December 2021 and this was poor. The service was really bad, we ordered soup, shrimps, salad and rice, and they forgot about rice at all, but include in bill. Dishes was brought slowly. But the flavour was good. Better visit another restaurant than that.
I personally love the decoration of the restaurant. The old school, majestic, Asian-meet-European matching tables and chairs, waiters in hotel uniform, nicely folded napkins… sure add up to the 80s Asian-wedding-venue-ish vibe, but it feels intentional and works well with their classic offerings on the menu. They have many traditional Thai dishes that were too old schooled to be found easily these days even in Thailand. Although the price is a bit high, it does match the quality of the meal. Besides, they have smaller portion so guests can compile a meals with different dishes to try. We were very happy with the foods and would love to come back again to try other dishes.
Those who say that the restaurant is too old or not modern enough do not appreciate the tremendous legacy behind this restaurant. It’s a pretty solid place with exquisitely delicious food, everything is still memorable after the meal. Nothing disappointed. Sorndaeng serves “Chaowang” cuisine with some Isaan dishes (i.e. Larb and Somtum), and basic Thai desserts. When you eat here you feel like all the dishes have been mastered: it deserves it’s Michelin star.On a Saturday afternoon at one PM the restaurant has a lively atmosphere with cheery patrons. In the background, blissful singing from a piano and voice duet. The waiters here are well dressed and approachable (it feels like they are honored by their jobs). The pinnacle of the experience is the view. It’s the Democracy statue in all of it’s glory. The arches protruded like large giants and the gold paint shimmered.Four of us with desserts ran for ~3,200 baht: fair enough given it’s one-star rating, the live music, expertly crew and the impeccable food. Keep in mind that down the road people are buying thousand baht omelettes from Jay Fai and mysteriously not complaining about that. We were stuffed to the brim and could have spent 500 baht less…Will come back.
The best kratong thong i ever had. Thai res with one michelin star for 3 years since 2019. Decoration and food taste is so authentic. Dessert also really great. Might suit foriegner more than Thai people as the taste is not too strong. But i love it
One of the best original Thai premium restuarant in BKK. Pineapple fried rice and fried egg with crab meat are my favorites.
All dishes are good. The way people treat restaurant staff is, I think, a kind of poker tell, revealing a persons character.
Our family has been coming here since I was young. It’s not a pricey place, but when you dine here, the atmosphere feels like you’re at a high-end restaurant but with a 80s/90s vibe. There’s live music if you don’t mind listening to songs from your dad’s and grandpa’s periods. All the dishes here are great. I particularly love their drunken chicken (ไก่แช่เหล้า - they used white meatand red curry (แกงป่า).
Great, precious and delicious Thai foods. This place is Old Thai restaurant where you have to try!!
Great food, good service, nice oldies songs. If you are in the area, this restaurant is a must-try place.
Very authentic and supremely tasty Thai cuisine, at a very reasonable price tag, worth our one hour taxi travel on this valentines day. Sincerely recommended, must book in advance
The taste is excellent!I was so impressive with the green curry with beef. Beyond my expectation, the beef is soft and juicy. The taste of Thai spice is well done with the meat.I would recommend any tourists to visit this restaurant if you want to experience an authentic Thai food. Please visit this restaurant.
Sorndaeng was amazing. The food was great and the staff were very friendly. The atmosphere inside was superb along with the live band. It serves great thai food and I definitely recommend it!
Everything is tasty but can be expensive. Their single dish meal started at 250 baht. They have live music in the evening which is like Thai 70s, as well as the atmosphere in the restaurant. I was surprised that they have enough parking for such location. If you come here early, you can park in the back of the restaurant. But if you come here later, you can park on the road in front of the place.Their mee-krob is a must try.
Good food, good drinks, excellent service, a huge menu and really good air conditioning. When I was there for Sunday lunch they had live music which was very nice as well. All good!Stylistically this is very old-school which may not be your thing or, on the other hand, you might find quite charming.
Ive worn a shameless backpacker sleeveless, but a nice waiter greeted me with Thai kindness. He gave great recommendations, so I had an appetizer, a main dish and a dessert. The dessert. Sesame dumpling with hot ginger sauce was really amazing. By far my best restaurant experience and with a class. The way I dressed never deserved a single cup of water there and yet I had the one of the finest dishes. Will visit again with my tux on.
High quality food, high price but extraordinary service Thai restaurant . Near democracy Monument . I ordered Fluffy Catfish with spicy shredded mango salad 180 baht and Crab omelette 280 baht and Chang beer 150 baht and steamed rice 30 baht. 17% ++ more, so 753 baht. Credit card accepted. Maybe next time I want to order shrimp dish and soup.
Wow just amazing spot on traditional thai food made to perfection! Everything we ordered and everything I have tried in the past is amazing. The prices here are nothing compared to the Michelin restaurants in America or Europe but the food is way better, just the right flavors and balance! I suggest the fluffy catfish with the mango salad, banana flower salad, the steamed red seafood curry in banana leaf, beef panang, fish ball eggplant green curry with the nice and chewy fermented white noodles as well as any other dish to be honest. You are guaranteed to get the real deal authentic food without getting sick. Dress semi formal if you want to blend in with the high society aristocratic filthy rich asians but if you are a foreigner they wont mind how you look. Dont eat anything before you come here so you can try many dishes! You can order several dishes as half orders too. Oh yeah and try the chilled rice in jasmine water if you get the chance, its usually only during the summer in other restaurants as well!
Michelin recommendation. Delicious food with fair price. Piano player and Singer even during lunch time. Decent customers and elegant atmosphere, good services and all these cost very low price. My favorite restaurant.
good thai food with reasonable price. superb service and theres live band singing all the olden days songs which my parents enjoy a lot. Ordered 9 dishes for 4 pax and finished everything. Will definitely go back for more.
Had dinner there just now. Great food. We were the only Caucasians there which always a good sign in an Asian restaurant. There was also live music. I ate too much. Thats the only complaint :). I would definitely recommend it. Try it. It is alway a good idea to ask for recommendations and then make your choice.
Third time here and never disappoints. Great food! We had a nice window view of Democracy Monument. Live piano and singing. Place was almost full at 13:30 on a Thursday - mostly locals. Highly recommend.
Lovely place. The vibe is all vintage 70s-80s fine dining matched by the crowd that are mostly 50 years old up. Wouldve given 5 stars if only the serving amount was a bit more generous. Taste-wise of their Tom Yam Shrimp and Chicken Pandan are a 5.
A good variety of traditional Thai food. Cozy atmosphere with enjoyable Thai music from 80s. Excellent service overall. Totally worth a try if you happen to be in the neighborhood.
