Quaint neighborhood cafe pairing creative sandwiches, charcuterie & imported cheeses with wine.
Mercearia Flores in Porto
Description
Privilege
Lovely staff and only €2 for a pot of tea!
I like the “mercearia” concept that combines grocery store with restaurant. I went there to try the canned fish delicacies that is so foreign a concept to Americans (we usually think canned fish are just not as good as freshly cooked ones in restaurants). I’m happy to report that the Portuguese canned sardine and tuna are as good as freshly grilled ones I tried before, but with a different flavor profile. They also have cheese, cured meat and dessert, which I really liked. The staff were friendly and accommodating. And if you have an odd dollar bill, ping it on the wall (an ongoing inside joke with the staff).
MoreA bit unconventional, this review is about one of their owners, Joana. She went out of her way for me while traveling and noticing something unique in her shop, totally outside the scope of her business in tinned fish, she made good on an offer, that by all accounts, was a long shot and something she didn’t have to go out of her way to do. It tells me this shop is run by good folks. While I didn’t eat there, the place was always packed and the menu looked amazing! Great location and excellent for people watching!
MoreIts a shop for canned foods and local products with kitchen, all their goods are very tasty and of high quality. However the service is not good, they forget us after ordering and we had to remind twice. To eat one can of sardines and a platter of cheese we waited almost 45 min. Please improve.
MoreFabulous shop owner that knows hos products and gives realy good advice, everything is top quality, very good wine, beer and cheeses etc. Recommend 100%
MoreThe people here are so nice and friendly..
The place is nice but the service is too slow. We waited almost 1 hour for some cured meat and we went away before receiving it. Dont go there if you want to eat something while visiting the city center.
MoreLovely wine bar located in the centre of town with super friendly staff. Sadly when we went the kitchen has closed for a few hours so we couldn’t get any food, something to bear in mind!
MoreWhat a gem! Great local products and tinned fish but also an extensive fresh menu! Sara, the owner/chef, was extremely helpful in guiding us to the warmed cheese with bread and mushroom, walnut salad. Delicious pastes de nata and coffee too. With cute outdoor tables so you can relax and watch the activity go by. This place has it all!
MoreReally nice place to visit and grabe some lunch! The spot connects two concepts - small market and café.You can not only buy some interesting souvenirs, but also try typical products.Whats more, the personal was kind and helpful.I will recommend the sandwich with Azores cheese. I believe it was number 14 in menu.
MoreStopped here for apéro. Had a great port tasting paired with tapenade, cheese, and walnuts. Friendly service. Came back a second time for some wine and a charcuterie plate.
MoreI ordered their veal pastry and vinho verde and they were both delicious! The ambiance is very calm and relaxing, and the staff is kind. I definitely recommend this place for a lil break to enjoy a snack and drink!
MoreDelicious, creative dishes and excellent service. Whats not to love?
We stopped here for dinner when all other restaurants turned us down without a reservation. And Im so glad we ended up at Mercearia Flores! For 2 not extremely hungry people we had 2 platters, a glass of red wine and a local stout beer. The bill came to €38 which we thought was more than reasonable.A big shout out to the staff, who was lovely to chat with that evening! Thank you!
MoreAbsolutely a must if you want to taste the best of the region. Good prices untill you consider the quality....then theyre great prices....delicious
MoreSuch a lovely spot. Fresh produce, delicious food in the centre of Porto run by some friendly owners!
MoreReally nice tasty fresh food done properly, great lunch spot
Good for a drink while listening to buskers on this cool little street.
Great place! The ladies are super nice and welcoming, they recommended 2 traditional dishes to try and both were amazing! It’s located in the middle of the Flores street, which is a must to visit. If you sit outside with the sun, is a pedestrian street so you can enjoy the day. All products were high quality. the food was amazingly good! Ask for the olive bread!
MoreThis place is so lovely! Sun shines on the terrace until 6pm. Yes it is in a rather touristy area, but that’s because they own this establishment for ten years. The owner is the sweetest man, and quite a polyglot! He speaks 4 languages and is so kind. Let him talk you through the local products they have, simple plates of cheeses and sardines. I really enjoyed it 😚
MoreWonderful little place with great food and really kind and knowledgeable staff! Highly recommend
MoreVery nice little cafe, we had breakfast and lunch here couple of times. Everything is very delishious.Nice and friendly waiters.
MoreA smart little deli with a good selection of Portuguese food. The wine and meat platters are particularly good and they have lovely olive oil and bread. A must-visit if you’re in Porto. Drop by Castro afterwards for pasteis de nata.
MoreHad lunch there twice. Great food including local meat and cheese plates, delicious veal or mushroom tarts, and a very nice shiitake and walnut salad. Nice generous pour of vino verde as well. Great spot and recommended for a light and healthy meal.
MoreNothing special. Small portions. The waiter was very nice but the Cook was rude when We asked for more salad dressing. Not a place to repeat better not go.
MoreLovely little place on a pedestrian street in the centre of Porto. Not really a restaurant, since they dont have a kitchen, but a fantastic place that offers tastings of local food and wine. Perfect for a small bite while walking around the city, it offers cured meats, cheeses, canned fish, sandwiches and salads, and some very good wines and beers to wash it all down. The owners are kind and will gladly make conversation ( he speaks multiple languages). They have some tables outside to enjoy the summer sun.
MoreSaddest sandwich I have ever tried. Tuna one, fake white bread (not even the Portuguese broa I was expecting). Salad with no seasoning, tuna with little taste and pepper sauce with no taste at all.I don’t know if cans are better, as it look they have nice Portuguese brands, but my fish was tasteless. I won’t be coming back : (
MoreLovely little delicatessen. We enjoyed the variety of food on offer which was atypical of many of the cafés in Porto. An added bonus is that you can buy to take home any foods that you enjoy.
MoreReally really loved it.Port, wine, cheese, meats, cakes and sweet treats. We smashed it all, and at a really reasonable price.Quaint, pretty, lovely.
MorePerfect place for a quick bite. Everything was fresh and locally sourced. The wine was excellent and the desserts were unique
MoreTotal rip off for a few organic salad leafs and vegan mozzarella (surprise, thought it was real cheese). 8.50 for such a "salad" is disrespectful. The staff agreed to add a few slices of cherry tomatoes after negotiation.
MoreCheese and wine, youre fine!!! Perfect place for a glass/bottle of wine and some lovely deli food. Staff are great and the location is perfect. Price is also very reasonable. Enjoy 😁
MoreNice little local restaurant and shop with friendly and attentive staff. Had a great platter of organic local cheese and meats/sausage, along with artisan bread and olives, paired with Port wine. Reasonable price!!Very readonably priced for
MoreNice little place with very friendly staff! In terms of food, I only had apetizers and they were great. Would totally recommend the selection of cheese, very good! This is also a shop, so you can purchase both food (sardines, cheese, jam, honey, cake etcand wine.
MoreReally cool street art. Plenty of amazing port tasting nearby too.
The waittres was disrespectful. Most of the things we wanted werent available, the food was cold and the wine warm. There wasnt bread. And furthermore it was insanely expensive, 350€ for a tiny bowl of almonds with salt not bigger than thumb not kidding. A rip-off. The worst place that we went in Porto by far and the most expensive. Also we tried better cheeses in other places. The only good thing was the cream cake but you can try the same one warm for only one euro in other places. Seriously, dont go.
MoreWe found a large selection of local products and ate several typical tasty dishes. Definitely recommended if you’re looking for an unusual setting for lunch right in the centre of Porto.
MoreIt was a bit hard to find healthy and delicious places to eat in Porto, but this place rocked! The service was very nice. I sat outside with my dog and they were super sweet and attentive. The tuna salad was perfect! Light and fresh. I had a mushroom pastry that I give it a 10! and I had this gluten free, low sugar carrot coconut cake that was amazing. Very different than a regular carrot cake from the US. This was light and healthy. They also sell organic products.
MoreThe staff clearly do not update the working hours neither in Google maps nor at the restaurant door. We were there waiting from 11:00AM (the time posted in mapstill 11:35AM (11:30AM was the time printed on the restaurant doorand the lady who works there was inside trying not to look at us as if it would make the whole situation better. Then she got outside and was trying to avoid us as well but when we asked her she said they will open after 15 minutes. The attitude in which she replied to us when we asked her to update the working hours was very annoying and we had to leave the restaurant. In my experience, this is not a place where they respect customers.
MoreStrange little place. Youre surrounded by cans of fish, hundreds... you pick a can and they serve it to you on a plate. Or you choose the same on a menu). Quirky idea, we enjoyed the experience. Bit disappointed by the cheese, I was expecting something other than Cheddar, being that I was in Portugal, but the crackers were nice.
MoreWonderful place to stop by and sample local wine and cheese, a Porto gem
Very cute restaurant and great service. We had great rose wine and a tasty plate of cheese. The beer we had could be a colder, but it was also good.
MoreWe gave it a try because it looked nice and homely but it was a mistake. We were hosted by a waitress who could not wait to go home, who told us the kitchen was closed. We This apparently means they cant even cut a piece of cheese. Then, we ordered an average beer (a popular cheap brand), and she brought us craft beers which were much more expensive. We would have understood if they didnt have any other beers and had told us that when ordering. But that wasnt the case, when we brought it to her attention, she brought out the ones we had asked for in the beginning. They try to scam the tourists and were not here to take it.
MoreAlways very busy on a similarly busy street. Offers regional products as well as fresh pastry: their served-warm nata was actually among the ones I liked most in Porto. Nice interior with apparent dedication, the service was helpful and friendly as well.
MoreHad an amazing lunch here. Then was able to buy the wine, cheese, and crackers I had eaten to take back and share. Highly recommended.
MoreGood food, disappointing service. It wasnt peak hour and we still had to wait at least 30minutes for our order to be taken. Although we approached the counter to order they sent us back to the table and proceeded to take orders of newer customers seated outside. Definitely a number of unhappy faces amongst other customers too.
MoreI only had a double espresso there but it was one of the best coffees I ever had. It was only €0.90 which wad much cheaper than other places in the centre of Porto. Very friendly staff too.
MoreA little disappointed. The food was ok, but the olives were so salty and the fish still had scales on it. The service was fast and kind, but they seemed too busy to truly provide good service. Its ok if your hungry but I think there are better place to eat.
MoreTerrible service. I waited with four friends for over 45 minutes for four sandwiches and one salad. The food it ok, but the service and the lack of caring from the staff is staggering. The food is ok and the space is cute, but in no way worth the frustration. Avoid.
MoreI had a quick lunch here - staff were lovely, very friendly. The place is very casual and comfortable.I ordered the grilled cheese - it was simple and delicious. They have a large selection of tinned fish for purchase or ordering as part of your meal.Would definitely recommend.
