Historical building with stands selling rare fruit, vegetables & dairy produce, plus a food court.
BEWARE! Horrible tourist trap for fruits, okay to grab a bite to eat like a sandwich or a drink at one of the mini restaurants/bars, however the fruit vendors let you taste fruits then try to sell you at ABSURD PRICES, 200 grams of fruit for 275 Reals ($52they wanted to charge me so I simply gave it back, you can buy the same at a normal market for 25 Reals ($5), don’t fall for it and don’t be afraid to say no or give whatever you picked back… horrible how they try to take advantage of people when you are visiting their country and contributing to their economy… you are better off going elsewhere
My experience is with one vendor however based on other reviews, this is a prevalent problem among the fruit sellers here. They highly inflate the fruit prices. I would personally avoid them but if you decide to buy, make sure you know the price beforehand(of course they don’t post their prices which by itself is a warning sign). It is unfortunate because this could be an interesting and fun place to visit but at least some of the fruit sellers are scammers and have turned this place into a tourist trap. Surprised that the management and other businesses don’t reign in these sellers.
Nice place to eat a coconut water (in the nut), some traditional pastel or bacalhau (codroll. The access by subway is easy but dirty, a lot of homeless on the streets. Get a ride to go and come home.
It is a must-see place in Sap Paulo - again it is located in dangerous area but you can go there by cab. It is very lively and vivid place.
Very interesting market with many fruits stalls selling all kind of fruits. Including cocoa pods. There are also stalls selling cheese and all sort of food. There are food stalls at the side that seem to attract the after work crowd or watch soccer matches
Not great! There are actually 3 markets in the area: one for wholesale, one for fruits and vegetables and one, the famous one, for all the rest, from fish, meat, cheese and nuts. The prices are far from great, there are many sellers but they all sell the same things.Good for a touristic tour, not good for buying
Great food, free samples, music and more
Loved how beautiful the food looks, the building has great features too. Too bad you get the feeling you have to excuse yourself if you dont want to try the products from every other stand. I can imagine some people like to sample everything, but I dont feel comfortable. The famous sandwich is great, but a bit too much meat, but hey thats the typical Brazilian style!
The building is pretty but the route to it is not very safe and you need to doble check which streets to go. The market itself offers a lot of fruit and vegetables but relatively expensive and the fruit sellers are very pushy. Since the moment we entered they were pushing some fruits in our hand and of we didnt buy anything, they were kind of getting annoyed. We ate there pretty nice and typical for the city sandwiches, which were very good and on good price. Its ok but not necessarily place to visit.
Buzzing market surrounded by more stands outside. Very busy over the weekend. Upstairs you’ll find many restaurants offering Brazilian food. Most places will offer you fresh fruit to try, dried cod and cervesas.
A great place to visit though I don’t think you need a tour unless you are really intrigued by the international fruit, cheese and meat options. The workers are very aggressive and you may find yourself paying lots of money (from what I was toldso I avoided that experience altogether and just went to the second floor to the restaurants where I enjoyed a DELICIOUS Mortadella Sandwhich. DO NOT LEAVE THE MARKET WITHOUT TRYING ONE!
A place with real character and vibe, just ignore the merchants hassling you to buy and keep moving through the aisles of shops offering a great array of fruits, spices, fish cheese and cured meats. Be sure to try the famous pastel or mortadella sandwiches available upstairs and wash it all down with an ice cold chopp.
Great market with plenty of selection, whether fruits, meat, spices, drinks, specialty items, etc. It has it all.Location is central, not too far from the metro. One note, exotic fruits can be pricey, just be aware of the prices before you decide to purchase.
The largest city in South America SAO PAULOwith the biggest and busiest markt place.Very diverse lots of friendly people and also a lot not so friendly but definitely a place u need to check out when visiting sao paulo’ just be very careful around these parts because of all the poverty around the markt. But overall a very nice and big place if you want to see the sao paulo live in action!!Visit the market !!!
Interesting place to visit while in São Paulo! Lots of fruit, meat, cheese stalls. The second level has about 5-10 restaurants. It’s very colorful, busy & has a variety of scents in the air because of all the meat, fish, cheeses sold there. Like most places in São Paulo - it would be helpful to know a few phrases in Portuguese before going there cause not many people speak anything else. It’s located in a very busy area. We were told to take care of our phones by our Uber driver who dropped us there. We tried the famous mortadella sandwich at Bar Do Mane and it was really good especially with the house sauces, but my favorite dish was the croquette de carne seca - it tasted like deep fried & seasoned corn beef.
A very large and beautiful market with lots to see. If youre visiting, there are lots of unique local items to purchase here. I loved seeing all the hand made items that were being made there. There are great restaurants on the second floor as well. The mortadella sandwiches are an absolute must try! They are heavy but extremely delicious.
I really like this place. As a child my parents used to take us there . It’s a colourful place, with a variety of fruits, meats, fishes, wines and more. The famous mortadella sandwich is big and delicious you must try it .
Eat the famous Mortadela Sandwich is mandatory. Try bolinho de bacalhau either. Ask for no ice in your drinks. Try to get to mercadão by Uber or Subway, parking at the mercadão costs R$25,00 per hour.
Good place to visit when you visit Sao Paulo. Huge types of fruits. You most likely to see some kinds of fruits that you have never seen before.
Great place to visit! Big advices. Do not accept the fruits or anything they offer you. People will try to trick you. Just say no. They have a very traditional sandwich made of processed meat that is in the picture. This sandwich is insane! You will get very full!
So many free samples of fruit, you will be full!! Its a beautiful old building with lots of yummy food!
Top! This was my first time here. Variety of fruits, nuts, meats, cheeses and personas. Lol. I’d recommend you go and experience it at least one time. Sellers are aggressive but that’s what makes this an experience. For those that love to explore, I wondered out 2 blocks and grabbed a street hotdog. It was safe. Police surveillance in the area.
Don’t buy anything without knowing the price first. Or buy small quantity to figure out the price before buying more. The places without price displayed are potentially a tourist trap. I bought less than 30 strawberries for US$ 27 here. It is the same outside. The vendors that dont have price showing are always more expensive.Nighttime, the side streets become a produce wholesale market full of trucks that is cheap. If you want street food, you have to come to the night market but the selection isnt great. The only problem is walking in this area can feel sketchy at night.
Best best best place to go.Food and fruits a lot. Please, taste the bologna sandwich. Amazing and tasty. If you are in SP, you must eat this. And the shrimp"pastel" .
Cool vibe. Real travelers know that central city markets are one of the best places to understand the food and trade culture of a city. This aplies to virtually anywhere.
The mercado is a must stop while visiting Sao Paulo it has the finest of fruits, seafood, cheeses, bacalau and more the famous sandwich mane. Enjoy the photos.
Mercado de municipal de São Paulo. The biggest market I’ve ever seen. They have every fruit that you could ever need 😩😩😩.This market had like the most amount of nuts Ive seen in a small place. Its like a zoo for markets. The sellers will try to Coerce you to taste stuff or buy stuff. But overall its an amazing place in a slightly dodgy area - it was definitely a highlight of my trip to São Paulo.
too much crowded..and the people.who is sselling fruits be carefull of them..they are giving fruits for tasting but later they are selling fruits over price therefor just taste it enough.. And the area is very dirty even toilets..
beautiful place full of colour and people.a milion sort of magnificent fruits, all the cheese you can imagine.tasty food, beer and wine.a great place to visit
Good to see if youre in the area, but dont go out of your way.Plenty of places to eat in here, loads of tropical fruit stalls, crafts beers, meat and cheeses... but it is very much for tourists so you can expect to pay much higher prices here compared to elsewhere.Be careful when being offered fruit to sample, some of these expect you to pay for the samples after youve tried them, just check its free before tasting. If this review was helpful please give it a like :enjoy.
Very nice place, for fruit and meat options really good. Specially for breakfast or lunch Mane is amazing place. Lots of varieties for meat lovers. Also at the end of bazaar, you find a brewery, he has really nice choices for beers. You can spend a day easily here. Out side of this market you can find almost everything at shops but not high quality and of course very reasonable prices
Very nice market! We have bought so many exotic tropical fruits here! The cheese and ham sandwich is also extremely famous here and you should try if you visit!
The home to very special dishes, the market is really a busy area of town and has everything you might need. It’s housed by quite a nice building from history. Don’t let the locals trick you into tasting dishes or fruits before asking the price or paying! They might force you to pay higher than its real price when you’re done eating or tasting. Tip: ask the price first.
Nice market. Well organised and clean. Lots of local foods and eateries. The surroundings of the market are not as nice, though, be wary. Also be cautious about touts from fruit stalls.
A must visit to get a sense of the local flavor of Brazil. There are a lot of vendors selling mostly meats or fruits. You can sample before you buy as well. There are also quite a few places to grab a bite (dont forget to check out the upstairsand drink. Definitely try the famous mortadella sandwich ! The place can be very crowded but pretty safe to walk around and explore.
What an amazing experience this market was, I got to drink fresh juice and taste the most delicious and amazing fruit there was before I bought some to take home. The shop packed it so well that I could even travel with it back home! What an amazing place!
This is an incredible popular market for the variety of fruits and other products. The sandwiches are enormous and tasty. The local draft is tasty to. The parking is a problem, might take an Uber.
Best thing to do Saturday around 10am - 2pm with your family: this market has just all of the best in terms of fresh fruits, meats, and other types of high quality food (don’t expect anything inexpensive). The mezzanine has a bunch of nice restaurants with a panoramic view of the market and the stained glasses from the beginning of last century. The most famous restaurant there is the Hocca Bar, which has the traditional Mortadela sandwich (it’s a type of bologna, but not bologna... must try), Bolinho de Bacalhau (cod fish fried cake/dumpling), Pastel de Bacalhau and Pernil Sandwich (knuckle of pork)... they also have al types of fruit Caipirinhas, unfortunately I can’t drink, but at least they look amazing for me.The market is located in a safe area, by station São Bento of blue line of the underground system.
I went to se the Mercato Municipal for the first time in many years in São Paulo, upon insistence of many friends and after having read many comments on tourist guides. The building is nice and very lively, very chaotic and crowded. It is worth a visit, but be prepared to withstand a continuous stream of proposals and requests from the workers of the fruit stands. You could also have a typical lunch, if you can find a place that suits you.
Sao Paulo is certainly not an overwhelming touristic experience, however the municipal market stands out as a major cultural and gastronomic experience! I strongly recommend a visit + bacalao (cod fish experience:
Excellent place. All the stalls look amazing, fruit, food, drinks is just out of this world. The building is beautiful and the whole atmosphere is a lot of fun. Try to avoid weekends as it gets busy.
Neat spot. Nice place to try some exotic (by tourist standardfruits but be aware how much you may be compelled to purchase! If the Hocca Bar upstairs is too crowded, they have a smaller stand on the main floor that is less busy with a lot of the same stuff.
What a nice market! You can fine almost a everything, I recommend to have breakfast there or lunch really nice restaurants in the top of the market. And downstairs you can fine fruit, meat, fish and liquors and wine. I really like this please
So the good...the fruit is absolutely delicious and even though it might be the same as something youve already had, such as grapes, it tastes completely different. S/N there is no such thing as seedless fruit in Brazil. The bad...the vendors are very generous with the free samples, but this is because they are trying to sell fruit. I bought some because it was so good, but be prepared it is VERY expensive. I argued it down because there were two styrofoam plates wrapped in saran wrap which contributed to the weight. Overall, a good experience though
Fruits, dry fruits, spices and restaurants, restro pubs, ask for it and you have it here and the very best... Pretty crowded so be careful of pick pockets and please keep mobiles inside whilst looking at things. Look for the turkish fruit shop owner with beard in the pictures below, a fab person who will let you taste various exotic fruits before you buy.
A huge market where you can find and taste anything.... just be little careful with the guys who offers you free fruits to taste, yes its free but they insist then to buy and when you do you will be surprised from the extreme high prices. I bought a bunch of fruits and they gave me a total of 930reals and at the end I paid 350 for all of them.
If you are from Northern Europe youll be amazed by the variety of the fruits. The nice thing is that you can get free samples. The website culturetrip suggested not to buy anything, but I wanted to have some nice finger grapes for dinner. The retailer tried to sell it to me for 46 R$(11€300g! At the end I brought it down to 10R$, but he reduced the weight to 100g.. Later I realized it was still a bit expensive for the given amount. Mistakenly, I associated the 10 R$(3,40€with 10 DKK(1,30€). Well at least I got a free hug from the retailer.
Great market, super chaotic, but well-organized with high-quality restaurants and shops. Pork sandwiches, spices, cheese and dairy, butchers, fishmongers, desserts, fruit salads, wine and beer. Not diluted by souvenir shops. Very packed, but well-worth the experience.
What a brilliant market where the shopkeepers are more than keen to help a ‘gringo’ with plenty of samples of exotic fruits! There’s so much to try from strawberry to dragonfruit to mango and a whole lot more. Apart from fruit, you can pretty much buy any culinary ingredient. The second level provides great views and there are heaps of places to eat if you’re not full already from the fruit samples
Nice food markt with fruit, vegetables, cheese and meat. Nice to wander around even though feels a bit like a tourist place. The area around the market does not feel safe at all. The walk from Luz metro station to the market was rather disturbing, once inside it felt safe. Best grab a taxi to get there.
