Mercado Modelo - Market in Bani, Dominican Republic
You can find nice dominican souvenirs, fruits and other markets. The place is a little crowded and you might be subjected to pickpockets.
Plenty of stalls to buy souvenirs from, however please be mindful of the hassle you might receive from the stall owners. I understand they are trying to earn a living but if you were looking for a peaceful, leisurely shop, I wouldn’t recommend coming here.
Excellent shopping for souvenirs and Dominican artwork. I loved the bargaining with local vendors.
If you ever visit Santo Doming this is the place were to go and shop for your family back home.. Just make sure you take pesos. If you dont have its ok. You can pay with American dollars . But make sure you know the curancy of the pesos.. People are very nice . Just becarefull with those on the street asking for money..
A good place to buy souvenir.
Is not what it used to be at all. Many of the shops are now closed, probably due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Still a good place if all you want is some local art and gifts mostly made by Dominican artisans.
Good place to buy souvenirs many item to buy and shop to choose from . Remember to bargain with the shop staff for a better deal . Item they sell mark up a lot and I feel they also expect buyer to negotiate on the price . Overall a good experience
Lots of great deals with prices that can be negotiated. Any souvenir you can imagine can be purchased here. I only took off one star because the location can be sketchy. Be careful with phones, purses, and wallets outside the market and make sure you’re fine by 5pm.
This is a good place to buy souvenirs. My only tip is to negotiate the prices. Because some spots would try to charge you extra. And also be careful. It didn’t seem like the safest place to be shopping at
Yeap a market with locals and so traditional touristic things to buy. You have to go only if you like old ,tiny, not well organized shops. I loved this place :)
Went into the first store on the right. The ladies were extremely helpful and attentive. Gave us very reasonable prices for everything. I didnt have to go anywhere else, they had everything I needed.
Great for souvenirs but it was almost "scary" walking in there. Pushy salesmen
Had a great time shopping and learning about the culture even danced at the musical instruments shops! “Colmado La Simpatía” Casilla #19
Great for souvenirs but not much else. Many shops with the same stuff. 1 money changer. They need a cafe.
Fun place to shop ! First store in the right is the best deals
Good shopping experience at the Mercado
Just souvenirs, not an actual market. Sellers are beyond annoying. Took me longer to get there than the actual stay, it was unbearable to have all these sellers behind you not even letting you see what they have.
This is a wild experience if you’ve never been in a local area of a latin american country - the neighborhood has A LOT going on! Be prepared. Inside, the vendors have more or less exactly the same products and they’ll try to engage you to come into their store for the sale - which is one of the only ways to differentiate their offerings. Some shops will have some hidden gems that don’t seem to be mass produced - though there’s almost no way to really tell.We tried to find some more authentic artesian goods in the city but they don’t seem to produce much or make them widely available, as the demand looks like it’s for the cheesy kitchsy items.
I love this mercado... A whole bunch of local "artesanías" with their own business inside one place. One can buy all kinds of souveniers here, from tee shirts to towels, key chains, mugs, tamboras and awesome cigars!! The people are exceptionally friendly and warm. Everyone is willing to help.
Mercado Modelo is a classic Latin American marketplace with many stalls selling everything - clothes, fake brands, fake cigars, souvenirs, paintings,...you name it, its there.Sellers are not that pushy, but rather mostly friendly, ready to chat and joke. Haggling is a must.
Lots of arts and crafts! Local farmers and exquisite tobacco and coffee!. Not expensive at all
Great placeto find a little bit of everything specially if you are looking for souvenirs from the dominican Republic. Jewelry in Larimar and ambar are also sold here.
As a tourist from North America avoid this area. You’ll see live chickens getting slaughtered and not a hygienic area.
Always come here for the best and most fresh fruits and veggies!! Fresh flowers and much more
Just pure fun. Bartering. Lots of jewelry and all kinds of souvenirs. Coffee, cigars, figurines. Great local vendors.
This is one of the main marketplaces where you can buy Larimar, Amber and souvenirs in Santo Domingo
not very many vendors and didnt feel safe at all. Not worth the drive.
Beautiful place
Go see Carlitos and you will get excellent prices. He sells top quality, hes very talented and reasonable. My family and I have been seeing him for over 20 years!
RICK THE ROVERS REPORT,This is the place to get all your souvenirs! Remember its ok to haggle, esp. since some things r overpriced for u. U can even find cheaper prices in the stores along the same street. The first vendor Popeye is my favorite. Hes a major larimar and amber salesman, whom aims to beat any price. The area is shady, so watch your back and u should b back.
Nice but abit worn a place for your trinkets for back home! The street needs to be alittle cleaner but inside is ok
It is a good makert and place for traditional gifts and cultural sivouners. Friendly people and owners.
Uff...some areas at the MM are dirty and smelly. Others are not too clean. There are lots of stores and beautiful dominican souvenir vendors.. but please be aware of your surroundings.
This is the place to get an authentic feeling of shopping in the city. The prices are reasonable. The retailers are eagered to serve. I recommend a visit. Pleasantly pleased.
Prices arent too bad, but you have to haggle for it and you will get SWARM by vendors, not pleasant.. However you do find good souvenirs here
Several shops are still open, but most are closed due to Covid-19. The new weekend curfew made it difficult to check out the place like we wanted.
If you are looking for a gift or souvenier of the Dom.Rep. this is the place. Wstch out for the prices especially tourist. Alway take off 40% of tje original price. They will lower the price
Vendors are to pushy and like to harass you into buying things you didn’t want or need, but you can find pretty much any kind of souvenir or gift, just make sure to know the actual value and negotiate the price always!
Great place to find a perfect souvenir! Theres endless items from a whole bunch of vendors here. Naturally, people in the area will be pushy to have you buy from them. Things can get pricey, even to the point where you kind find a similar item in the USA for cheaper. Nonetheless, you can find some really really cool things that you cant find anywhere else.
The best place to find Dominican souvenir! Soooo cheap!!!
Messy but great prices. Keep close watch of your things tho and remember to hagle
Too crowded. Doesnt feel safeeven when we were with "bodyguards". Sellers overwhem you. Every seller wants you to "help" them. Prices go up or down depending on your looks and accent.
Its an oldest tourist market, there are many gifts shops over there, they sale souvenirs, pictures, cigars rum mamajana, and diferentes local produce, hand made article, like, rood mask, a lot of tourist go to shopping there, if you go for visit or excursions to Santo Domingo, dont forget to visit this beautiful old Artistic market
Recommended for a visit, but not to shop there, unless you like to haggle. Vendors are very pushy since they all sell the same merchandise, in fact, the merchandise isn’t anything special, you can find the same knick-knacks elsewhere without the constant harassment.
Not worthy the trip. Most products seem mass production and not original. Vendors are quite pushy. The whole experience was disappointing.
A cool market to explore in Santo Domingo, but it can be a tourist trap. Be sure to just walk away from pushy shop owners but there are good deals and good souvenirs to take home. Security is around and this is a safe place to go.
It was a nice little place to find souvenirs, all the shops sell pretty much the same thing so not much variety. Always haggle the price and pay in pesos as the US dollar price is extortionate. Be prepared to be taken into almost every shop as each owner wants to show you their products.
This place is beautiful place very history
Tourist trap - avoid!!! Souvenir shops and sellers chasing you to buy.
You can get amazing deals here! There are some crazy items like machetes that you can get for pennies on the peso! However, some of the vendors in this area are ridiculously aggressive. There was one man that grabbed me by the arm simply for him to get me into his store. Another man stopped me at the door as I was leaving to buy some coffee from him as well. I mean, hey, whatever works, though. I did get to pick up some wonderful items here, like a starfish necklace for my mom, along with other things. If youd like to experience somewhat of a thrill and get great deals while youre at it, this is the place for you.Just remember: always negotiate the price down by at least by 30% always, and act a little disinterested when buying things, because when you walk away, they will usually rethink turning down your offer. Never pay full price for anything. As poor as some of these people may be, getting ripped off doesnt help the economy or them that much. There is always the sucker right in front of you they have to sell to also.
