Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery in Nantes
Description
Super!
Useless
Mostly vapid quotes and timelines. No explanation of why it started or how it stopped.
MoreIts really good place when the weather is so hot.
Boulversant
Here, freedom is written in all the languages.Good explanation of the trade of slavery, you can consult the books with quotes about freedom. The visit takes around 30 minutes.
MoreMust see a Nantes. Very well portrated, the slavery that existed in the world and in particular Europe. The monument explains the unfortunate incidents briefly till date. The name of the ships inscribed on the floor shows the gravity of slavery which existed
MoreVery peaceful memorial. The message is strong and the museum transmits it well.
A good place to learn about the sad, unforgettable slave trade legacy
Never seen a slavery memorial this large! The team definitely did their due diligence in gathering their information!
Morea must-see place in Nantes to understand the historical raise of the city
Interesting, unexpected and well laid out! However, it was upsetting to see some kids in a solemn place climbing the structure and treating the wooden planks like a jungle gym, with parents not telling them off.
MoreUnusual memorial with floor lights depicting all the names of the slave ships which left the city. Dont make a special visit but it was on the way to the elephant of Nantes.
MoreYoull see the most inspirational quotes there and its located down next to the river of nantes and the island of nantes.
MoreVery moving, seeing so many glass (?bricks each representing a ship with slaves that had passed through Nantes. Really hit home the ridiculous numbers of people that were involved.
MoreRespect to anyone who remember that slavery still exist!!!
its really small.
Get a view of atrocities people committed with slavery.
Hidden gem. Stumbled across it walking through Nantes and so glad we did. Learned loads and truly humbled by the experience. Fantastic installation.
MoreIt gives you a mix of feelings, specially with the new wing of racism in the new world today. It is sad that this place is like a secret place, not many people know about it! Not listed in any suggested tourism to see list..
MoreSubtle but educational memorial.
Nice Plaza with good restaurants
Powerful. But wish it was its own museum.
❤️❤️❤️
Very moving memorial. It has got a street level part and a down stairs part. It is both in french and english and it describes slavery and slavery abolishing. It is a beautifully doen memorial site. Worth the visit
MoreIt could be more lively
Very well thought through and executed memorial
Nice place for walk with partner
A memorial to the end of French slavery.
I really like this place and the ambiance inside it. Well, honestly, I was crying. Slavery as a forced bondage by others, or willful submission towards our own self deceit, both are just the same old craps.
MoreNever knew how many counties had slaves!
It was impressive. Every involved town should have one like this. Why is this so hard for a town like Amsterdam? Shame on us dutchees.
MoreExciting. Add more depth to our visit and make us made us more sensitive
Memory is good, action is better !
Very important memorial
I liked it, but felt very sad reading the history of slavery done by french
A beautiful Memorial. When you walk down the stairs, the interior and sound effects create an atmosphere where of almost feels like being in the belly of a boat. You van read many quotes from famous and less famous people.
MoreTop
It was kind of a relaxing walk. I didnt realize it would all be outside but it was refreshing
MoreVery interesting place to have details regarding the slavery!!! And to see that some people have fought this barbarism and that others recognize that it was a crime against humanity...
MoreWorth a quick deviation from the Green Line! Very thought provoking. And many of the slavery reforms are so relatively recent 😓.
MoreIt’s cool but very simple. Check it out in like 15 minutes.
Touching underground memorial which looks back on Nantes history as a slave trading port.
MoreA moving tribute to what was the slave trade, providing details about it before, during and after, as well as giving insight into slavery as a human rights issue as well. Plus its free! I highly recommend visiting.
MoreA very moving memorial, both unusual in design and very effective. Putting it beneath street level with the concrete pillars shaped liked ships timbers really creates the impression that one is in the bowels of an old slaving ship. The descriptions and time line are well thought out and detailed enough to give a history of the slaving trade not only that was run from the very river one sees so close by but also the extent and scope of the trade across the world and for so long.Very impressive and highly recommended if you are visiting Nantes.
MoreA very subtle, yet informative to describe a terrible part of world history
The place is peaceful and historical. The museum is small and informative.
Top !
