Melina on the Rooftop - Tapas restaurant in Melbourne, Australia
On Saturday night my partner and friends had dinner at Melina on the Rooftop. As other google reviews mention the food we felt was over priced along with small serving portions. We ordered 4 sharing entree plates followed by 5 main meals. The fries ordered and the 2 meat skewer dishes were served to our table cold. We also ordered a Greek salad which we never got from our order. Overall the food was average. Our dining experience was a disappointment. On receiving the bill we noticed a 10% surcharge ? We question this charge and was told apparently it was for dining on a Saturday night, which was not a public holiday. After questioning the waiter /manager about this he could not explain to me why there was a surcharge on the bill. While in discussion with the manager to rectify the situation a lady staff member rudely interrupted and shoved the menu to my face to point out the fine print of the surcharge. She continued to argue with me claiming that the venue was a fine FIVE STAR restaurant, thats why they charge a surcharge. This waitress looking after our table didnt even pour water into our glasses, so I would hardly call this a 5 star service establishment. The manager to his credit did refund us back the $20 surcharge.
I found it to be extremely overpriced for what it was… meat skewers with pita bread. As others have said, you’re paying for the view and the atmosphere, but if you go on a cold night (so, you know, anytime in winterthe rooftop is closed off and you can’t really see the view! All in all I wouldn’t be able to justify coming back again.
Food was good, the meats are cooked to perfection. The recent renovation makes it so much better too. Also fine even if its raining, its completely closed in with the roof on.
Food was good but a bit too expensive for what it was. Most staff members were lovely and professional, except one lady who started pooling together the content of several plates because we were running out of space on our table while her colleague was checking if we could get an extra table, which we got in the end. The view from the rooftop and general atmosphere is also nice.
Had dinner here last night. Food was nice although the serves are quite small. One skewer with a side of dip and some pita bread was under whelming. We shared lots of entrees first. No banquet on offer like other Greek restaurants so that was also disappointing. Food is over priced!! You really are paying for the view and the atmosphere. The worst part was we were slugged with a 10% surcharge on top of an already expensive bill. Not sure what that was about?? It was a Saturday night not a public holiday. Best to stick with the suburbs if youre looking for a good Greek restaurant if you like to leave like youve been fed well!!
I went with my boyfriend last Saturday, around 5 in the afternoon, there was only one couple sitting in the booths, they told us to sit in the hall, I asked if we could sit in the booths and they told us no because there were other reservations. During the time we were there, about 1 hour, none of the booths reservations were presented and we could notice how some boys dressed in casual clothes were seated in the hall, while two young people with a more refined appearance and residents were sitting in the boothBeyond this bad "welcome" the food left much to be desired.I would not recommend it.
We went for a birthday dinner and I just think it was ok. The restaurant is lovely but still needs to work on some things. The food was good, but overpriced for the size. We order 8 pork ribs and then the waitress told us they only have ribs for four plates which was embarrassing. Anyway thanks for having us despite all of that we enjoyed our night!
The venue is gorgeous and has a great intimate feel and most of the food was delicious but value for money wise it was pretty overpriced. The skewers I dont think could be classified as a main meal for the price you pay but they were cooked beautifully. Had both the octopus and calamari and both were horribly chewy.Highly reccommend the saganaki and chorizo/halloumi starters.Cocktails at $24 were pretty steep considering the small glasses.Would come back for a bit of a graze and a drink but I cant see the value in mains.
It was a great dining experience. Friendly and helpful staff, great view and delicious dishes. My date is vegetarian so I ditched meat for the night. Their veggie skewers were surprisingly satisfying for a meat eater like me. Mushrooms especially, were amazing. Zucchini balls were very enjoyable too. Saganaki cheese was so great that we are sorry to say well never be able to go vegan. They made the virgin mojito just right as well. Not overly minty or too sweet.
Dined for NYE, they had set menus at $125pp which included 1 complimentary cocktail. Set menu ended up being all shared plates, main dish was 1 thin slice of lamb rib about the size of half of your palm. We also ordered 3 extra cocktails, received 1 and then had to ask about the remaining 2 cocktails to come; only to then be notified they had run out. Dessert on the set menu stated “House made brownie with blueberries, cotton candy and vanilla ice cream.” What we actually received was chocolate brownie with a marshmallow on top which was so hard it was inedible. To top it off in the end there was about a $100 variance on the bill, they had charged us for our cocktails which were to be included in the set menus and also the cocktails we never received. It was a shame to have such a poor experience and I only hope this criticism will help improve your quality of food and dining experience.
I rated 5 stars first visit i loved it!UPDATEWent back and they have renovated. It looks a million bucks! ......But the tables at the booth (4 seatsare a bit small for the large share plates/platters they have. We didnt order too much but with share plates and drinks we could hardly fit 3 dishes on the table. It felt crowded and less comfortable. I dont think the food was as nice as last time either.Plus our server just seemed really rude. He seemed distracted, he forgot a drink order, was very slow after we asked for the bill and just overall wasnt friendly. Sorry mate, but your co-worker was lovely with a big smile and helped us out when you werent there, no problems at all.So im dropping it down to 3 stars. Great for instagram pics and a drink/many drinks overlooking city lights.I wouldnt go back for dinner.
A Greek Restaurant, that can be hard to find but offers a very beautiful view of the city. The initial few seconds of check-in werent the most engaging one as the staff seemed a bit lost or new, but it picked up, for good.Orders a Kheftetakiya and Chicken Skewers with glasses of wine. Everything on the plate was yum....Succulent and juicy!! The food on plate just made our day, and guess what, it.isnt expensive at all.A must !!
Great place for our date night. Excellent service and yummy food! We had the grilled octopus, trio.of dips and chicken skewers. The pita bread went so well with everything. Also tried the strawberry mojito which was yum!
Good service. Good food. Pricing is neither cheap nor expensive.
Wonderful viewsFoods was really niceReally nice and personal serviceA couple of beers on tap
Fabulous food, if youre a meat eater. Only fries a basic salad, (tomato, red onion, olives in a red wine vinegarette), or a veggie kebab, if youre not.We even checked beforehand, and they said they could do many dishes as Vegan. They couldnt. But overall its a lovely atmosphere, and absolutely fantastic staff!!If you love Greek meat dishes, youll love it.
MAD MELINA VIBES ! 👌 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷Came here for a quick drink late one night. This place has AWESOME views. 🏙Drink were tasty and proper serving sizes! Very rare to see. 🍸Prices were obviously city prices so prepare yourselves.Didnt try any of the food so cant comment.Great music playing as well. This place would be perfect for a function room.Staff service was friendly but not super speedy.Easy to find. Lift access up and city parking around if you dare.Would recommend and return here. 🤝🙏👌
Im not sure what the focus is for this restaurant. The menu is disappointing to say the least. My chicken skewer was cold and was precooked or had been sitting there for a while. So you order large plates or small plate either way the menu looked foolproof and a boffin could cook it. As for the ambiance and music, zero. My wife booked this place for our anniversary. A big fail.
What an amazing location! Great views! Great service - friendly and welcoming! Great selection of food and all of it was absolutely delicious - loved it all! Theo and his team looked after us and made us feel very special! Highly recommended!
Having a birthday party or a date? This is the place you need to take your loved ones! The food is great, they have live music sometimes (not always), they also serve cake and candle and flares if you want to surprise a friend. The view is lovely and the vibe is good, the owner is super lovely!
My husband and I spent the weekend in the City for our Wedding Anniversary. We wanted a nice little escape for a night to celebrate and found this place. Melina’s On The Rooftop is a brilliant space. Food was good. They gave us free shots on the house. Our waitress was incredibly welcoming and accommodating. The Manager was very lovely, and made me an exclusive signature drink. Sadly, two downfalls of this place include, the two guys who are co-owners of this establishment were arrogant, rude and more interested in talking up pretty dames rather than coordinating, communicating and maintaining the rest of the environment. And the second being that toilets are uni-sex. I had to witness one of the male owners taking a dump, the sound effects and the smell are unforgettable. Not something you want to experience, especially right before you’re about to eat your meal. I really hope they build separate male and female toilets, as this will go a long way. However to conclude on a redeemable note, a little more on the Manager. She was friendly, gorgeous, lively, bubbly, professional, switched-on and a very clever lass. I look forward to her Rooftop Restaurant & Bar come to life with her brilliant ideas, because the place is thriving with potential. Definitely coming back here again. If you’ll still have me after this slightly macabre review!
The food was over priced for what it was, mine was uncooked and couldnt be eaten. The service was extremely poor. Wine was delivered with the waiter not knowing what she was doing or there for, very basic.Very disappointing although the bill was slashed acknowledging our disappointment. It may have been a bad night but post Covid they need to get their act right. 5% surcharge on card when you are encourage to use a card for health and with 10% surcharge because it was saturday all equals to a 15% surcharge before you have order anything.Dont care what the cost as long as it was good. This wasntNot a pleasant dinning experience.
Fantastic night... celebrating Annas Birthday... excellent service, beautiful venue... Amazing Views ... cant wait to go back ... Theo and staff deserve much praise on a Melbourne icon...
We came on a Saturday at 1pm. The food was very tasty and fresh. Sat next to a window and had a lovely view of the city. Roof was rolled back and we sat in glorious sunshine. Given 4 out of 5 stars as there is a very limited wine menu. Would have been nice to pair the lunch with a Riesling, but this is not an option. Food was served in a reasonable time. Atmosphere was very intimate and perfect for our anniversary. We will return.
Had a fabulous evening, great service, cocktails & delicious selection of food offerings (we pretty much tried it all, was the best! - dont go changing the menu), great views across the city and a magical lightening show. What more can one want? Will be back for another relaxing night with friends at Melina.
We had a group of 12 for New Year’s Eve and paid $125 per head for the “banquet” in which we shared 1 tiny entree, main and desert between 4 people. Then they claimed that we ordered 7 extra cocktails $24 each. The service was appalling. A knife was dropped by a waiter on one of us, another waiter dropped a glass of champagne on one of our laps. The tiny chocolate cake was hard as a rock. The can of coke was $12!Overall, the portions were tiny, let alone sharing them between 4 others. There was a lack of consideration for covid, being that we have to all share dishes. The waiters were impolite and seemed unprofessional. The food was lacklustre and boring. And the experience was over priced for what you get.
I had a reservation for an important birthday celebration for a week, got the reservation canceled less than a day before. There was no real attempt at explaining beyond "we were not supposed to take reservations for breakfast, sorry". There was no effort to accommodate as or mend their mistake. Its a shame, the place sounded great, but if you cant trust them to keep their reservations and honor at least a 24h minimum cancellation policy I do not see my self ever giving them a chance.
Great location and views. The food was ok, disappointed with the summer banquet set menu though, not great presentation and some of the dishes were a let down. The service was a bit hot and miss too. Very slow given the restaurant was pretty empty with only a few tables booked up. Overall expensive for what you get.
Great venue and menu options. Being a vegetarian, there is a variety for me to choose from. I thoroughly enjoy the Halloumi and vegetable skewers here. The Risoni pasta tasted like canned tomatoes so that can definitely be improved. Last night I had my wedding anniversary dinner here and a staff member called Kripa went out of her way to make us feel special. Lovely service from her.
The most memorable dining experience three friends and I have had. Everything from location, waiting staff, kitchen staff, the band and ambience all contributed. The stand out, the Greek cuisine on showcase. We shared dip platters, chargrilled octopus, and an array of meat and vegetable dishes. But one thing I didnt want to share, but did eventually, was the massive cocktail they have, omg so good...the best thing we all agreed on was the chargrilled octopus, it was amazing and comes highly recommended. If you are wanting truly authentic Greek cuisine in Melbourne, this is the place hands down. And a big shout out to the owners and managers who went out of their way to make sure everyone was happy with their evening, thank you! Never see so many smiling patrons in restaurant before. #greekstyle
We had a delicious meal and enjoyed the live music. Our waitress was attentive and the food came out quickly. We had pita and dips, white bait, octopus and the Mediterranean salad. All delicious especially the octopus and salad. Would happily go back.
Really nice food, good quality. The live music was awesome and relaxing. We went December 20th and it was extremely hot, the roofs are open so it was a little uncomfrtable, would be really nice on a 28 below degree day :DI would recommend their giant Mojito!
I never leave reviews but I went here for my 21st birthday dinner with friends a while ago in May 2019, food and drinks were good, and the staff were so lovely and really made the experience great here! One of the lovely waitresses bought a complimentary dessert with sprinklers to my table for my birthday. Really nice location too.
so.. well... very small portions, big prices, good view. That kind of sums it up.Food is OK but not on par with what one is accustomed to in Melbourne. What I realy found to bother me is the blatant violation of the Fire safety rules (see photo)We went to Stalactites afterwards as we sti were hungry.
Greek spirit in the heart of Melbourne!!! Delicious food always. Thats one of my favorites greek restaurant since... long time ago. Every time surprise me with good texture and now with live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights makes the environment more awesome. Let me mention every Saturday night is a Greek night and the rest of it is a great Spanish band. Absolutely, stunning view on 13th floor can make the dinner more exciting for couples, groups or families too. The staff looks after each single table all the time!!! Highly recommended for everyone to visit it ones... and it will become a favorite place to many of you!!!
Food was tasty and view was awesome from roof top.. service was quick and reasonable serving..
Great view and food.Excellent staff! Lumb is fantastic.
Food was ok...lamb skewers were good, saganaki a bit too oily, waitress could have been a bit more accommodating or understanding because we had a baby but seated outside in stool section.View is great. Was a bit hard to find. Its next to goody burger on lonsdale st. Need to enter through glass doors and take elevator to top floor
The view and service is fantastic. The food also came out quickly and was great. The mist breeze that is installed is great on a hot day especially with a cold beer in your hand.
The view is fantastic! We were so thankful we were given a great table considering we were celebrating our anniversary. The food however needed a little work for the price theyre presented at. Very small portions for a large price that were somewhat lacking in flavour. Staff were fantastic however and wouldnt mind going back for the atmosphere and a bit of meze but not for a full dinner.
Great atmosphere, excellent customer service, gorgeous location, and delicious Greek food! Please make sure you book in advance!
It was the first time that I had the Greek food. The food was so good and the staff was really helpful. Definitely go back again.
Nice location, not too crowded. Good food.Delicious lamb chops :)
Greek food was so good. Located on the top floor of the Greek building (that is how i recognize itLamp + calamari + salad + chorizo + flourless chocolate cake ~$100 Tuesday evening and the place was packed. Wonder what it is like during the weekend ^^
Delicious Greek food, hidden up the top of the Greek centre. Visited here with a few friends for dinner, as you walk in - youre greeted with a very modern Greek interior with a slight touch of tradition. It felt very classy like a warm Greek island setting. The FoodThe menu had a good variety of traditional Greek dishes and was great for sharing between a small group. We ordered the chicken and lamb skewers, ravioli, dip, chips and a few salads. Must say everything was on point. Nothing really stood out but we enjoyed the dishes thoroughly.DesertGood selection, perhaps a few of them were too sweet. The Baklava was too sweet, the mud cake was so good and the lemon tart was average.ServiceWaiters were attentive, one of them was funny and the manager/owner came out and said hello.OverallGreat views, good food and extremely atmospheric. Good for dates, business lunches and small group divers.8/10
Food was beautiful, would like to come in summer. It is not value for money. Drinks seems crazy over priced. If you dont mind cashing out, you will enjoy .
My new favourite greek place, great setting and view, great food and great service. Also love how they have a great selection of Greek beers. Keep up the great work.
Nice place, good food but the service was pretty slow. There were just a couple of tables when we arrived. Our waitress was really nice but not attentive, we had to call her all the time. Moreover, what made it worse was they have been eating in front of us, on a corner, standing!! Notcaring if we needed something because, obviously they must have been starving, but this is not the way!!
Yummy food, nice ambience.Food was great: calamari, saganaki, lamb skewer, greek salad, friesEspresso martini was niceGreek coffee was really strongBooked a table at 5pm, have to clear by 8.30pm (Fridays and Saturdays).
Superb service for a massive Christmas party. They sat us on the terrace, overlooking Lonsdale and seeing David Jones Bridge and the top of the arts centre. My photos do no justice, the venue is stunning!Unfortunately the amenities were under construction (which they did not inform the party of 39, 1 of whom was heavily pregnantand we then had to go down 8 floors to a 2 cubicle unisex bathroom that the Greek celebrations on level 2 were also sharing. Lucky for elevators, but extremely annoying all the same as they appeared to have people constantly in and out of the elevators and so you could wait up to 5 minutes just to get on a lift.Otherwise tho, I could not fault the service, we had some wonderful waiters and the manager stayed on top of our table. From being in hospitality, I know how difficult managing a crowd like that can be, but he never let us down.Chef is phenomenal! Im not overly fond of Greek cuisine (apart from the basicsbut they served a spectacular spread of dishes for all. The Saganaki was perfection!
