Modelled on London Zoo, this family-friendly establishment has animals from all around the world.
Beautiful place, really enjoyed the interesting keeper talks. Animal lovers can easily spend a whole day here. Big place with several trails and a large variety of animals. My favourite place to sit and eat or relax is at the cafe near the giraffe and zebra enclosure (level 2, open air). Also loved watching the baboons and elephants.Buy coffee here - support coffee for wildlife ($5.20 for large, $4.50 for regular).Great conservation messages. Use 100% recycled toilet paper, avoid unsustainable palm oil products.Glad Im a member of the zoos :)
Nice adventure! It was during school holidays so packed with people .Also difficult to get a parking spot.Overall my son had a lovely time.We got to see some animals.Wish we were able to see more animals. Nice coffee and sandwich! Wouldn’t mind taking my son there again!
My daughters and I had a great experience at the Melbourne Zoo. It was really interesting finding out information and facts from the zoo keeper about the animals. The website is very informative on how to get there and pricing. That helped me a lot because its been a while since Ive caught a train. Its important to plan your day and give yourself at least 3-4 hours to see all the animals. You can bring your own food or buy from the kiosk and I recommend to buy souvenirs from the zoo. Also get the map the staff give you at the entrance because that will help you to find where everything is.
Going to the zoo has been my fav childhood memory. Now that i’m a bit grown up, I wanna give the same memory to my niece. We arrived there on Monday, filled with excitement.Unfortunately, it was the worst zoo exp for me and my niece wasn’t impressed as well (she’s 4). The animals look lonely and not all advertised animals were there to be seen. To be precise, there were 2 elephants (advertised on the way in 4-5 different names), 0 tiger, 1 snow leopard, 0 penguins. Almost every part of the zoo is under maintenance. There’s ppl building things in the cage at every corner. We paid $105 for the ticket and felt it was a ripped off! 🫠🫠
A good 3 to 4 hours spent with kids and friends. A few areas were closed for renovation. Easy to find drinks and snacks (muffin and chips). Toilets and bins can be easily found. There is a pinic area. Good to bring your own lunch as there isnt any restaurant or cafe for food. Parking is $2 for 5 hours.
We visited to mainly see the animals in the Australian bush but didn’t really see much at 11:30. There was no indication online on what time was best to visit the zoo. No kangaroos which lots of children were disappointed and most of the other animals were sleeping (kola, wombat, Tasmanian devil). It was also quite expensive at $42 (adultso if visiting with a family, get the membership pass which is an annual membership $125 and kids go free which gives you access to other zoos too and come with a picnic! Food was also expensive. Probably a better time to come would be when it opens and pay for an animal encounter for $33 but I still don’t think we would have seen the kangaroos as I think they were moved. Crowd pleasers were the giraffes, lemurs and meerkats that were easier to see. The zoo was doing quite a bit of work to a few key enclosures which again wasn’t listed. Gift shop was expensive too. Not sure I’d be back or recommend it.
Always a family favourite. The little one cant get enough of the animals, however if you want to use the carousel, you better go on weekends, public and school holidays. Too bad for the tourists that comes during the week as they miss out on an opportunity to ride a classic century old carousel. Bonus though is that crowds arent as busy.
Excellent experience with so much to explore within the zoo. It gets very busy quite quickly so be sure to arrive early. The zoo keepers were very informative and there was so much to see. Great for children with so many enclosures to see and a childrens playground at one side of the zoo too. Definitely an experience to do when visiting Melbourne.
This is our 3rd visit and enjoyed our family time. You need atleast 4-5hours to leisurely cover most of the animals. Some sealife areas were empty.Tiger, snow leopard, lions den, platypus was the most enjoyable. The rainforrest area was quite soothing to walk. This is the first time I visited in winter and I think it is better in winter than in scorching summer.Parking is tricky if you come pass 11am or during publix holidays but you might be lucky to get off street parking on Sundays when it is free.
Really worth visiting. Lots of animals to see. Youll spend 6 hours to see all of them. The cafes also have vegan and vegetarian options. Wish they could provide a vehicle this service like werribee. Too much walking.
We loved the zoo. It is very beautiful that all the animals are kept in their natural environment (almost natural :). You can reach zoo with tram. If you buy ticket online, you dont have to wait for enter.Instagram: @balondandunya
Excellent adventure…! I really enjoyed the beautiful environment and scenery! It’s a great experience to see the Australian animals. It’s better to book the ticket in advance. The price is affordable. You can either bring your lunch or buy it from several cafes in there. It takes almost a full day to visit all parts of the zoo. Highly recommended in school holidays…
We all had a great time. Right from the beginning everything was so easy. An app for parking which means your dont need to find coins. We hired a wheelchair for my daughter which was super quick and easy to organise. Entry was quick and easy. Some of the animals werent there or hiding but we still saw a huge range of animals. Kids loved it, and kids free on holidays. You cant beat that!
Went on a Monday afternoon last week. It was such a delightful experience, kids were everywhere shouting in excitement. Picked a sunny day so the shots look amazing.
Surprisingly great experience with our 2.5 year old toddler. We love it that we did not have to walk very far between the enclosures of different animals. The design of the enclosures were not only well thought out to mimic their natural habitats but also to ensure that us humans get a chance to get up close to them without us being a nuisance at the same time. Two thumbs up!
Absolutely loved it here!Went with my family and the kids and adults both had such a wonderful time!Easy accessibility for everyone, easy access to clean and fresh drinking water along with lots of opportunities to sit and relax around the gardens. The staff were so polite, professional and welcoming and you can tell they have a passion for the animals safety and wellbeing.
Okay firstly I have to say I love the Melbourne Zoo. It has only scored two stars though for various reasons.- The Parking is terrible. Wondering around driving up and down trying to find a park is horrendous. Then you have to pay for the parking at the ticket machines and walk a few minutes to the gate. We did arrive at 10 am though which is late for the zoo.- The $40 price tag for adults which only includes entry is well and truly overpriced.- There are alot of enclosures with zero animals in them. Some were hiding which is fair enough but lots had nothing. I spent alot of time photographing structure.- There is now no way of purchasing a bottle of water to carry around with you. They make you pay for a cup which forces you to have it there and then and buy another later in the day. Just another way of making money disguised as being good for the environment. The typical time to spend here would be 4-5 hours and that is rushed with alot of tourist dodging.
If youre a Melbournian, a zoo pass is must!!My 2yr old loves going to the zoo, the grounds are very easy to navigate, the staff are wonderful and the option to byo lunch and use bbqs is wonderful.Toilets are available across the zoo with disabled and parents rooms.Kiosks are extremely expensive, avoid if you can. Gift store is also quite pricey.I do suggest checking out the map beforehand, seeing if theres keeper talks youd like to do and make a plan, you can donthe entire zoo in a few hours but if you want to get the most out of your day plan ahead.
First time ever going to a proper Zoo. Didnt expect too much going in, but was definitley surprised going out. First of all, as a student, the tickets were pretty affordable at 30 bucks. I mistakenly booked my tickets for the wrong day but the staff in the zoo were nice enough to let us in. There are definitley a wide variety of animals in this zoo from giraffes to penguins. The zoo was split in several zones with each zone having its own theme. Unfortunately some of the animals were just nowhere to be seen which was quite a shame. As someone who is still quite new to Australia, I really really wanted to see some Kangaroos but unfortunately, although I did technically see them, they were extremely far away and hard to spot. Highlight of the zoo, in my opinion was definitley the giraffes. I had never seen a giraffe before coming here and was genuienly surprised by how tall they were.If you are considering coming here, please do book in advance. We went on a Sunday around half past 12 and the Zoo was packed. So unless you want to wait a long queue, definitely book tickets.
Great place to visit with the kids. Awesome first time experience of seeing the kangaroos, penguins🐧 and koala 🐨. Full day trip is a must. Definitely follow the map to complete all the routes and visit all the animals.
I have been a few times to Melbourne zoo. Its a big Park with lots to see. Can definitely spend the whole day there. Im feel sorry though for large animals like elements that dont seem to have much space. Melbourne zoo however seems quite tidy and organised, with plenty to see and lots of food and beverage stalls. The parking is $2 for 5 hours. 5 hours is rushed though so i do feel that parking should be at least 6 hours. It would also be good to know what time is feeding time for the animals giving you a chance to see them more active.
I love the zoo. Really enjoy observing the animals. Was disappointing on this day that no lions on display which is usually one of the marquee displays. I just think that they need to make it a must see. You don’t think Melbourne Zoo when you are a visitor. Whether they go the Arctic route with polar bears, grizzly bears and fox etc? Just need head turning at every corner to really stand out. Also some more water refill stations around the place please. Please note that kids go in free on weekends and school holidays. So get there and support your favourite animals
We had a fun experience here. We got to see: the seals being trained, the little penguins and snow leopard being fed, very curious red panda, a restless Sumatran tiger, glorious lions and an ancient Aldabra tortoise.
Was a great day out , also as kids where free entry during school holidays made for a cheap day out ,pack your picnic bag and , enjoy the animals was very busy so suggest getting there at opening time aswell.
Bought tickets in advance online and had no wait to get in, arrived at 9:30am and had little trouble getting a park for the car (which cost $2 for 5 hours), could see them filling quickly though and would advise arriving early to avoid missing a spot.Wonderful day with the family going from exhibit to exhibit here, loved the gorillas, tortoises and the butterflies.Food on site cost around $50 for four drinks and four buckets of chips with nuggets (at the elephant food area)If you’re planning on buying soft toys from the gift shop be aware that pricing starts around $20 for small plush toys.Face painting was on site at the elephant viewing area at a cost of $10 per person, was worth the money for it, they were fantastic with the kids and amazing artwork that they loved!
I am not generally a fan of zoos as they always remind me of prisons for animals, but i think an exception can be made for Melbourne Zoo. Unique wildlife in natural surrounding and most animals appear to be thriving, roaming around with vitality, not stuck in a corner looking sad. We particularly enjoyed the big cats, the giraffes who look amazing and a wonderful butterfly house. A must visit if you are in Melbourne
Great Day out! Plenty to do but only down side going on a public holiday is that the Zoo lets in way to many people and its to packed to really enjoy anything or even walk around without getting pushed around, better off going at a different time!
Good Zoo with plenty to see. Easy to navigate around and not get lost or miss anything. Can be kinda busy at peak times so would avoid attending at these times if you want a hassle free visit. Will be back.
Sometimes you forget how big this zoo is. We did maybe half of it and had to leave for our little man started getting tired. The enclosures here are beautiful and it does seem like the animals are all comfortable. Though I must say some of the grouping of animals are a little strange. Eg butterfly house with elephants.Cant wait for our next trip to the zoo. Maybe when it is a little less hot too.
The keepers were very friendly and happy to chat to us, all about the animals. They were full of fascinating information. The grounds are beautiful and its enjoyable walking through the natural environments. The animals have spacious habitats and enclosures with plenty of viewing points.
Friendly kid friendly zoo with a great variety of animals. These include tigers, lions, elephants, snow leopards, cassowary and of course western lowland gorillasPlenty of cafes and kiosks scattered throughout the trails. There are also multiple water misters to cool yourself down during a warm summer day.Melbourne Zoo promotes eco sustainability and strives for zero waste. Make sure you bring your own water bottles and straws.
Best zoo Ive ever been to and Ive been to zoos from all across Europe and the wider world. I went on valentines Day with my partner. This zoo has a massive variety of animals and the enclosures are large and well maintained. We were in the zoo for 4.5 hours and only saw half the animals - luckily we purchased memberships and will be visiting again next week to see the rest. The keepers are friendly and knowledgeable and always happy to answer questions. For us, the butterfly house was the highlight and was truly breathtaking.Cannot recommend highly enough, especially if you really care about the welfare of animals and love being able to see a large variety.
We enjoyed our visit to the zoo. We can spend a whole day and its better to start early, before 10am.We took the train from cbd to Royal Park station in Upfield line. Zoo rail entrance is very close to the railway station. Most of the exhibits were available and I loved to see lion, tiger and giraffe. It was like walking through a fenced forest, and they didnt do any cruel animal shows which was good. Ive been to some zoo where they do elephant shows and elephants have to play along to get food.Lunch at lakeside cafe was okay.Overall a good experience. Thanks.
Love taking my children to the Melbourne zoo we go every holidaysThere’s so much to see and doAnd wonderful eating areas to picnic
Fantastic day at the zoo. Place has really improved from when i was a kid.Young fella loved it.Heaps of shady areas to put down a rug and have a picnic.Food and drink is also available. We ordered the hamper for 2, must be done at lease 3 days prior to your visit to the zoo. Heaps of places to get an ice cream as well.
Melbourne Zoo is the oldest Zoo in Australia when it was established in 1862. Located in the Royal park just north of the Melbourne city. It has animals from all over the world and has more than 320 species. It also has helps in fighting extinction of few vulnerable species. $2 parking is available outside the zoo which is run by city of Melbourne. Keepers talks happen throughout the day and you can also do close encounters with few animals. Definitely worth a visit especially if you have kids with you.
Plenty of animals and greenry to see. various educational boards and signs are around the zoo. Some animals such as monkeys and meerkats come very close to the glass. We got to see the elephants being fed, which is always wonderful. I am however disappointed in the card only payment policy in most stores and vending machines. Several animal enclosures also have large amounts of algae sludge in the water and all over the waters edge.
Its great zoo that i never see before. Over 300 animals around you, the time will Run so quickly so go ther early. Every think is available food , drinks.
It was great to be back. All the animals were out. Absolute favourites were the butterflies, tassie devil and lemurs. We felt very covid safe. A couple of new enclosures since we haven’t been there in years. Lots of lovely friendly staff around who made us feel very welcome. Parking outside is still $2 for 5 hrs. Lots of food options with sitting areas. Not many sheltered areas if the weathers bad so definitely bring an umbrella if the weather forecast is horrible. Locker rental available at the front. Overall a great family fun day with lots of photo opportunities. Definitely worth being a zoo member if you are looking to visit frequently. Would also recommend public transport if you want to save yourself the trouble of driving in.
Melbourne zoo is a wonderful day out for all ages and especially for kids. Very spacious and plenty of rest and open areas to relax. Good food and drink options without being over priced but can also take your own. Good variety of animals and experiences on offer. Plan for 3 hours minimum but you can easily spend a whole day here. Good Place to Visit.
Best place to learn and see different kinds of animals. the highlight for me was the lion, leopards, elephants, giraffes and tiger. its a big place so prepare 4-5 hours if your planing to see everything. membership passes are also available if you want to come back and cafes are located in different areas to energize you.
Fantastic experience for all ages within Melbourne city limits. Allow at least 4 hours to leisurely enjoy all the habitats and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Car parking is only $2 for 5 hours. Highlights for us were the lion and the snow leopards. Good commentary sessions from staff too.. also, enough cafes and restaurants with good food and beverages.
Always wonderful to visit. Love the different areas to visit and learn about animals, animals on endangered lists, conservation and lots of information on how you can help.Almost all of the Zoo is accessible to all abilities!Lots of restrooms and shady eating areas.
Been here a few times, I love taking photos of the animals (I’ll add them later). It’s great, all you have to do is to show them vaccination proof and scan the code. Then, you’re in! Such a fun place to be, it’s a must see when visiting Melbourne for a holiday!
Melbourne Zoo has definitely improved its facilities and some new animals to watch.A very good excursion for kids to enjoy and learn.Butterfly house is still an attraction and is very enchanting to watch.Nice picnic spots and few cafes around with good sitting arrangements make it worth a visit.
Pleasant experience visiting the zoo. Convenient prior booking. Ample parking upon arrival. Smooth entry despite the additional precautionary measures required because of the pandemic situation. Helpful map distributed. Convenient food outlets available. Found most places to be clean and neat. The animal population inside did not appear to be large, but we could meet a good variety of them.
Such a great zoo! I like that some times you just dont see some animals because they have enclosures that allow them to be hidden. Beautiful gardens and paths with cool shady spots even on hot days.
Had the most amazing day at Melbourne zoo! The animals are enjoying the sunshine and being super cute! Its so nice to see how much space the animals have to explore and play! A fantastic place to take the family or kids. I would however recommend bringing your own lunch as the food isnt the greatest but other than that it was truly amazing!
Good variety of animals here. Its clean, pleasantly spaced out and the staff here were all smiles! Love how the zookeepers really took their time to talk about the animals under their care. Special shout out to the elephant and giraffe enclosures! Well done guys!Food is quite limited, typical grub at attractions. Fried food, pies, pastries, salads, amazed that theres a bakery there!Bring your own food if you dont wanna spend too much on ready made food.
This is an absolute must when visiting Melbourne. We live in Melbourne and go every year. The animals are well loved and taken care of and the habitats they live in are spacious and very well looked after. They staff who work there clearly love what they do and are very friendly and helpful, particularly those who work with the animals. I recommend visiting our zoo to anyone looking for a fun day trip spent outdoors.
