Modern building of an institution founded in 1854 containing dinosaur and regional history exhibits.
You can buy tickets offline (thought you can’t pay in cash). if you buy the basic general admission then the museum are divided by different sections (prehistoric-premodern-natural). you can safely spend a few hours or even a day here. overall a nice small get away form the city!
A vast and varied array of exhibits to delight all the ages. More than a days worth of exciting things to see. Loved the open air native flora and fauna section.
Cool place to visit. Lot of interesting displays. Was quite bust during school holidays. Dinosaur display seemed most popular.
Visited the Melbourne Museum yesterday with my two little ones. This Museum is accessible by pram, with ramps and lifts. We pre-booked tickets online and had no wait when we entered around 9am in the morning. We visited the station cafe for a morning tea pit stop opposite the childrens gallery. They served us quickly with some pre-made snacks and drinks. We spent the majority of our time between the childrens gallery (which I recommend you book in advance a time slot, so you can enjoy 50 mins of uninterrupted exploration time), forrest gallery and the dinosaur exhibition. Each exhibition has been carefully tailored to involve the little ones, with each section having interactive parts for the kids to get involved in. We spent a good 2-3 hours here with a 1 and 2 year old and I felt like that was an adequate amount of time to enjoy a portion of the museum. After our visit, we decided to drop into the new Mercury restaurant which is outside the gift shop and down the corridor. They have highchairs and a kids menu available, as well as a menu for adults which has some simple meals. I found the meals to be okay at best, in terms of quality and size. The museum has lots of toilets around - including lots with baby change tables/baby change facilities which were clean and large to fit a pram inside.Parking wise, underneath there is parking that is accessible via a lift for those who have prams with them.I would definitely recommend visiting as its such a great museum, but anticipate if you are visiting with kids that you might need to visit multiple times to see everything thats on offer!
The place was absolutely packed and the process of getting in was fast because we could book tickets through the QR code link.Dinosaurs were cool. Spiders were cool. Dead things are cool, had a great time.
Many students from different school were on a learning journey and somehow affected my experience due to them crowding around the exhibits to do their homework/acitivities. Was a bit noisy but otherwise most exhibits were informative and interesting. Liked the outdoor forest too.
Super cool experience! I easily spent hours and lost track of time. Definitely worth while! I would highly recommend buying your ticket online to avoid waiting in line.
It’s so good place. It’s worth to come. They told story about the original then the history of Melbourne. Various Animal exhibition here. For university student, they provided the special fare for you. Love it !!!
Every visit is a great one, interactive and educational. Especially good for an immersive experience on your own, with a friend or with the little ones. Dinosaur exhibit a highlight as well as the seasonal museum exhibits
One of my favourite museums in the world to visit 🥰 managed to catch the Tyama interactive/immersive exhibit and am still in awe days later! The regular exhibits are also lovely - would recommend seeing the central forest, dinosaurs among us, and mini museum 🦕🌲
My 9 year old loved visiting for interstate. Lots to see and so much information available. Some more interactive areas would be engaging but overall a great day out
Great place to disappear for hours. So many areas with really interesting and well put together collections.Ive added a picture of the lockers which are not mentioned anywhere on the website and are a must for travellers as we were. They are free and have various sizes perfect for on the way to or from airport with luggage.Reasonable entry price and the cafe had heaps of food selections again well priced.
If youre in Melbourne this is a place that you must go! So much to learn with some amazing scientific specimens. If you plan to go on a weekend, highly recommend you book your tickets in advance, its an easy process through their website. And if you want to go through everything, youll need a full day so may be consider going early in the morning.Itll be an amazing experience for both adults and kids
Well done to the museum staff. I really enjoyed the first nation exhibition. I believe they have put a lot of time and energy fir this exhibition. I for one learned a lot about our aboriginal people and first people living on this land. Also the other parts looked interesting but didn’t had time to go.With general admission of 15 you can see different exhibition.Good museum.
Great family fun time. Cafe nice. Hot and cold food. Kids enjoyed dinosaurs, earth, and gift shop. Very pricey the gift shop. But free entry not including special exhibitions. Outdoor rain forecast relaxing.
Such an amazing venue. There is so much going on. We took our boys (4 & 1and they were engaged and interested in each of the areas! Plan a full day, and make sure you explore! The building and exhibitions are made even more interesting by the staff. The staff are enthusiastic and so knowledgeable. One even helped point us to a quiet area to have our lunch when one of our boys way getting a bit overwhelming.Lovely place and lovely people.100% recommended. And keep an eye on the changing special experiences. Always something new to see!!
So much to see and do for all ages, even when you go a few times a year!... we missed some great things last time, today our favs were the tiny machines & models and the gigantic doll house in Melbourne exhibition.Accessibility ♿️ excellent & plenty of parking below.
I went around lunchtime midweek and it was busy with school groups and mums with prams. So lovely to see people out and about making the most of this wonderful attraction. I only toured the outdoor gallery and the early Melbourne area and it still took me 3 hours. I did read and look at everything in those areas. I really enjoyed myself. Staff were very friendly and helpful too. I saw the Tyama exhibition and loved it!
One our favourite places to play at as a family. The Forrest Walk, Dinosaur exhibits and Gandel Children’s Gallery are our top three things to see/do. The delicious, healthy and affordable packed lunches sold at the Museum Cafe are one of the big reasons we keep returning as we are able to “make a day of it” without needing to rush off home for sustenance or settling for unhealthy foods out of desperation. According to my child the visit is incomplete without the Junior Pack (wholemeal ham/cheese sandwich with a mini muffin and small apple).
One of my all time favourite places in Melbourne. Never disappoints! Really love the dinosaur and first people sections. They make a museum into almost an art gallery, yet the science and natural aspects of it are still of high standard. Brilliant work! The gift shop is so good its a crime! Cuteness overload and makes me really want to spend the last penny on me!
I took my 5 year old brother to the Melbourne Museum and he loved it!Just as I remembered as a little kid, there are so many things to see and interact with.We went specifically to see the Triceratops: Fate of the Dinosaurs exhibition. It was really cool and was a great hit with my brother who loves dinosaurs. He also especially loved the insect and bugs section which had all kinds of creepy crawlys. But even if you’re not a fan of bugs there’s still something for everyone. Personally my favourite section is the Australian history room - especially the history relating to Melbourne. We have a museum membership so we were able to visit the museum for free, including the triceratops exhibition. I think if you have kids and they enjoy the museum it is definitely worth considering purchasing a membership. You even get discounts at the gift shop and cheaper parking too.The museum was clean, had friendly and welcoming staff and overall we had a great time.
A brilliant experience with lots of different areas to explore and learn. The different displays range from dinosaurs to aboriginal history, and theres activities for all ages within the museum. The childrens play area was a great addition for wearing the little ones out. You could easily spend half a day here depending on how much you want to see.
Enjoy my visit at Melbourne museum. Few minutes waited to buy the ticket(15$there, recommend buying it online on busy days. Spent couple hours there, staffs were nice and helpful. Very suitable for kids.
Really nice exhibits with some really interesting ones on the ground floor. If you read through everything and watch most of the videos may take you more than a day so start early. Plus its free for students so students dont need to rush through it, just make multiple visits.I went during the triceratops exhibit and it was pretty cool.
✩ A wonderful place to spend your weekend. All the exhibits are interactive, educational and awe-inspiring. Not having been to the museum in a few years, I was pleasantly surprised at the small changes and updates that were made to the exhibit.✩ The Horridus Triceratops is a must visit! We also loved the First Nations Peoples and The Melbourne Story exhibits.✩ We loved the Museum Cafe and its use of eco-friendly coffee cups.
A must visit in Melbourne. Kids enter free, while for adults it is $15. Forest walk and triceratops are interesting. You can add 45 minutes IMAX movies along with the entry ticket. Food is a bit expensive. But you can carry your food if you feel so. The souvenir shop is stuffed with many attractive items.
Really cool experience overall with lots of things to see and do! Different displays and detailed explanations to match the work on display. Great activity for any age and is an overall great learning experience. I didnt go myself, but the Cafe seemed a little over priced for the products, but other than that, I had a really great time!
Well, this is definitely a better place than the exhibits displayed in National Gallery of Victoria. There were so many exhibitions inside and students get a concession on their tickets, so yay. There are plenty of amazing artworks, sculptures and information for people of all ages. Would definitely recommend this place. I spent about 3.5 hours here.
I like the museum alot. Especially the kids area and the forest reserve. This is an amazing day activity for kids. They can spend much time. Very helpful to keep kids bsy under a roof......
Really loved all of the dinosaur skeletons on display, and an impressive collection of crystals/gems. Phar lap is a classic Melbourne must see. The tiny models exhibit was really great as well, and we liked seeing the year 12 VCE students deisgn products. Very cheap entry- adults are only $15, and kids under 16 are free.
Amazing museum experience! We were there for 5 hours and didnt even see the first floor. Coming back many times for sure. Only next time on a weekday, as it is quite busy and loud on a Sunday.
Melbourne Museum is a great place to visit. You can easily spend a few hours there looking at dinosaurs, and other prehistoric animals. Great for kids. The culture and history section was very informative and interesting. You can have lunch there as well.
we went to see the Triceratops exhibition and it was a great day out with the kids...would have liked to have seen more information or interactive activities for the 5+ yo kids but they just loved being out and about...
This is a great museum but I cannot compare to other museums on size or exhibits as I havent been to many others.Phar Lap lives here and he is still amazing. The dinosaur exhibits are pretty big lol, the bug section is really cool and the amenities are clean. Hard to get a coffee at 4pm on a Sunday though. Room for improvement there! Thought I found a cool cafe for cake and coffee then realised it was an exhibit. Great miniature world exhibit with life size cafe ;)
Amazing! We were blown away by the triceratops exhibition. The staff and whole team at the museum do an incredible job keeping the museum to such a high standard.A little something for everyone and well worth a visit.
The Melbourne Museum is one of our favourite Melbourne hangouts. Its a wonderland of curiosity and knowledge for every age and we come away inspired and feeling more connected to our planet and the human experience on earth. The cafe offers a great selection including healthy ones which is amazing and I love that they use eco friendly packaging for containers and coffee cups. They also make great coffee! My little one loves the childrens gallery but this is only for 0-5, I hope they think about holding older kids sessions, my son will be heartbroken when he turn 6 and can no longer go in. We also love the live animal exhibits (bugs, lizardsand the lovely outdoor spaces to learn about the natural world outdoors, which includes an eel feeding talk and some lovely forest walks. As with all things its worth planning your visit, booking ahead and booking parking if you can, especially if you are visiting on peak days.
A great way to spend a day exploring. Highly recommend it. I wish the exhibits were more written with adults in mind (more detailed language, as currently most of it is written for childrenhowever I found the experience very enjoyable. The short haired lady working at the ticket booth was a delight.
Melbourne Museum is awesome. We have an annual membership which is definitely worth the money! We just did the Triceratops exhibit and it was breathtaking. The 3D lights makes you feel like you are living in the era! The Childrens Gallery is also the best! The climbing display is super safe and kids go crazy there. The lighting show at this gallery is amazing for babies! My 8 month old was super entranced by that. Highly recommend. I will update my membership as soon as it runs out. Super worthwhile!
This review is primarily for Triceratops: Fate of the Dinosaurs, which sees the world’s most finely preserved Triceratops skeleton displayed in the museum as the cornerstone attraction of the larger dinosaur exhibit. So, firstly, the Museum itself. Melbourne does not boast a sprawling expanse like the American Museum of Natural History in New York or Londons Natural History Museum, what we have is a compact building that is ideal for parents with younger kids, because the limited exhibitions align with their attention span.In terms of attending, I used the underground car park, which you can prebook, and which was a reasonable $13 charge on a weekend. However, while trams and trains are close, neither are at the door, and buses...those I dont know about, sorry. The Triceratops exhibition is not included with entry, so you have to buy a specific ticket. That surprised some attendees in the queue to enter, but the staff dealing with this were polite and positive and the size of the building means heading back to the entrance to purchase a ticket is not a trek.My words cant do justice to the exhibit itself. Horridus (as our triceratops has been namedis awesome to behold, despite being merely a skeleton 65-million odd years old. He/she looks dipped in some metallic primer and the lighting is moody, its just terrific staging. It impressed me, and it impressed everyone else if the reactions from young and old were anything to go by.The other dinosaur skeletons are amazing, but Horridus is next level awesome, so kudos to the Museum staff for securing such a complete example and managing to convey the majestic terror that seeing a triceratops in the flesh, 65 million-odd years ago, would invoke.
Fantastic experience..Very neatly arranged..We were amazed by the beetle section display! My daughter had fun and it was educational too..But need to buy separate tickets to attend some events..Better to book your tickets online and check out for special events..
Gorgeous, informative exhibit for all ages. We spent hours here perusing the collection, everything is kept in wonderful condition. Lots of kids running around which is great to see — I’m glad that families are coming here to learn about different aspects of the world and its history. Perfect place to bring any person who loves their science.
Spent a wonderful day at the Melbourne Museum at Carlton Gardens. State of the art architecture. Fantastic display of First Nations artifacts and dinosaurs amd a variety of insects. 👌Definitely must visit.
Me and my 2 year old had a great time. Easy pram access to all exhibits. He could see everything whilst sat in the pram and was in awe at the dinosaurs. The childrens gallery is a great place for the young kids to stretch their legs. It gets quite busy but the kids dont seem to care and thats what matters. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Well be back!
Was very fun and and an interesting experience! Was pretty crowded but if you wish to avoid this i suggest going outside of school hours. The cafe inside has a range of options too.
This is one of my favourite places to go with kids. Always so much things to learn and explore. The childrens gallery is always a must. Kids love it. The triceratops exhibition is amazing. Everything is so well made and displayed.
Had the most wonderful visit to the Melbourne Museum. The collection is just amazing, I could spend hours here. Friendly staff, nice coffee bar and museum shop. The only downside was that one section was closed for the development of a new (very excitingexhibition - ah well great excuse to visit again in June. Definitely recommended for all ages. If only Sydney had a museum like this I would visit every week.
Very disappointed. 1 whole section not open. I remember previous visits so much to see, this time not much at all. Took my grandson & he loved it. There is a lot of interactive stuff for kids & the special kids exhibit was pretty good
Really a good place for adults and kids. You would be able to spend at least 2 hours here with the kids to explore around. Even the souvenirs shop are amazing too.
Great place to visit for kids and adults alike.Different sections where you can learn about earth, moon, insects, dinasours, and many more things.Make sure to visit the First People gallery where you can see amazing history (past and present). The mini to scale section is just amazing with huge effort done that cant be ignored. The 3D movie about volcanos is super amazing as you dont need to put on any glasses. All in all, its a place that is worth visiting.Staff are very nice and helpful.
This was a fantastic place to go to on our day off. On a week day (not school holidays), it is pretty quiet. There were a few school groups around but they left by around 2pm. Lots to see at the museum, we only saw the main part (not the extra exhibitions), but there were 4 sections. My favourite was the marine section, and biology area. You could easily spend a whole day here.I also visited the cafe, and ordered the fish and chips, and the vegetarian burger. This is where I can only give 4 stars. The fish was quite dry. And the salad had far too much vinegar dressing. The burger was quite good, better than expected. The chips were great though! For the price, it was pretty good (apart from the dry fish). Around $15 for each meal. The coffee was good. No complaints, but nothing special. Ordered it extra hot and came at the perfect temperature (coffee is preferred on the hotter side).Would definitely come here again, but personally, I would pack my own lunch.
