Part of a local chain, this family-friendly 1950s-style diner serves classic American comfort fare.
Had a few eggs and 2 pancakes and my friend had the same plus two coffees. Paid almost 40 bucks. Definitely overpriced but since Im a older guy I appreciate the decor 👍but ask yourself do I want to spend twenty bucks for 2 eggs and two pancakes?
I usually eat there at least once, or twice a week. No complaints except everytime I come in, it seems the prices have gone up. I ordered an Omlete with Spinach and Swiss cheese and those diced potatoes, a hamburger patty on the side and a glass of orange juice. The hamburger was $6.00 and the orange juice was $5.99. The eggs and potatoes which came with toast was $14.00 ! The constant problem is the parking. Especially since the outdoor patio went in. Sometimes I drive in and drive right back out and go somewhere else !
Great breakfast. I got over easy eggs with hash browns well done bacon and an English muffin. He got short rib grilled cheese and loved it!
Fun retro atmosphere, quick but non intrusive service. Great late night option. Garlic parmesan fries were perfectly crispy and had huge garlic flavor. Impossible burger was good, Tina salad and rye bread in the tuna melt were both superb. Sweet potato fries were amazing. Finished with the waffle sundae - very tasty, but note that while the description doesnt include chocolate sauce or nuts it comes with both, so ask if you have food allergies. All in all delicious food, reasonable prices, at a time not many restaurants are open, and more food than it had any right to be. My wife and I split an app, 2 entrees, and a dessert, and took more than half of it to go when we were full to bursting!
Always love a good diner vibe. A classic in LA
Believe it Or Not? I had never been to Mels ... This Will Now Be A Frequent Place To Dine love the Food and the service 😀 😋 👌
Nice classic style diner. We enjoyed the burgers and try the milk shakes!
My favorite here is the Hangover Omelet with home fries & sourdough toast. The Chili has good sized chunks of Beef in it. The coffee & iced tea are great. The iced tea at most places are either weak or slightly fermented or taste like it was brewed with unfiltered tap water. Not here, its brewed perfectly! 👌👍😁
Exceptional customer service and my lettuce wrapped mushroom burger and side salad tasted fresh and delicious.
We stopped for dessert after seeing "PROM".The milkshakes were delicious and my husbands chili made him happy. And he is quite the connoisseur of chili.
OMG. Needed ice cream. Found Mels. Ordered the black and white sundae. Vanolla ice cream, chocolate sauce and marshmallow covered with whipped cream, nuts and a cherry. AND HUGE!
🍜 Food:The food was delicious, my order hit the spot. We had breakfast, their burgers looked good also, so we are going back soon.👩💼Service:Very friendly staff, they seem to be great at their jobs.🏠 Atmosphere:Simply a cool looking diner, one of the best in Los Angeles. Great place to visit for an authentic American diner experience.💸 Price:They have fair value menu items, I wouldnt complain in this department. You get what you pay for.
Food was delicious. If you are vegan they have a vegan milkshake any flavor. My friend ordered a impossible Burger and fries she loved it. I order the Santa Fe chicken salad with chipotle dressing it was delicious. I had to travel 1hour to have lunch here it was well worth the drive. Beautiful restaurant. Very iconic.
Great service and 4/5 food. Loved my Arepo cocktail
Love Mels drive in style, a must stop to eat in LA. Deserts and shakes are definitely worth it, love the vintage and retro coin machine juke boxes!Don’t recommend the turkey plate that I took the last time as it was not as great and a bit filthy with a bunch of sauce-cheese or something but yeah!Cool visit on our day off, will visit soon.
The service here is great. Ive been to both of the Hollywood locations and this is definitely superior to both Hollywood locations. The food was perfect and I received exactly what I ordered. I specifically asked for extra crispy fries and for literally the first time ever, I actually received extra crispy fries. I ordered the French dip and it was actually pretty amazing. My kid ordered the tuna sandwich with a few modifications and she received her meal exactly as ordered.
This was my 1st time to this Mels diner always wanted to stop in. I didnt think about taking pictures the service was great the ambience was old school and everybody was was just mining their own business eating and talking a nice quaint place to eat
I love old diners like these, but the food I ordered was horrible. I ordered the "Spaghetti & Meatballs" price was $16, the pasta was very soft, and the meatballs seemed like they came from a frozen bag, boiled, then just thrown onto my pasta. It was horrendous. Really not worth the price of this food when the quality was so bad. Also, I ordered the "Bacon Ranch Fries" from the appetizer category and it was alright with a price of $9, but I can go somewhere else that served the same appetizer with a much more serving size at a cheaper price. Lastly, the milkshakes; I say they do really well for their milkshakes, I ordered the $8 "The Penguin", which is a chocolate milkshake with marshmallow fluff and Hersheys chocolate syrup on the inner sides of the cup with whipcreame and cherry on top, it was very good. Overall, I think I would just come here to hang out, drink milkshakes, and relax while listening to jukebox tunes instead.
The food here was very good, I am not the biggest fan of breakfast so kept it simple with an omelette but I really enjoyed this and was surprised by how nice it was. The decor was really cool and fun to see everything, the service was decent - not particularly friendly but nice enough.
Great food, wonderful service personnel there. One of my favorite places
We didn’t even get to get the food. Staff was very rude. Asked simple questions about the menu and the waiter got rude with us. Sat for about 15 min and didn’t even get a drink. Very unhappy with the service, we left.
I went to Mels for a burger and fries and was very disappointed! The patty was not medium like I ask for and was kinda thin no flavor just bland not flavorful! Yhe waitress was too busy to complain or even get me mustard for the burger had to take it from an empty table. The fries were a huge disappointment! Tiny and same not flavorful at all? The place was more Busier than I have ever seen which is very surprising with a Bland hamburger? Save yourself the awful experience dont buy the burger and fries.
Im an overseas tourist here on business and I was taken here by a group of colleagues. The service here was was exceptional. Friendly, courteous and attentive without going overboard. Stand out dish for me, the pineapple chicken hard shell taco. Would definitely recommend Mels as a place to stop and eat.
What a great diner- went in by myself, treated me to their amazing patty melt- the service was great- food delicious on my cheat day the perfect choice! Their fries are really yummy too! Highly recommend!!!
I met a friend of mine who lives out of town. We hadnt seen each other in about 5 years and we are talkers. We enjoyed our food and our waitress was very pleasant and made sure our meals were correct. Mine was wrong at first and she offered to take it back. Excellent service up to that point. We told her that we were catching up and asked if that was an issue. She told us the limit was "typically" 2 hours but shed let us know if she needed the table. At this point there were about 4 other people in the diner. We were not there at a busy time.At about 2 hours and 15 min she came over to the table and asked if we needed anything else and we paid our bill, leaving a tip on the card and then my friend was going to leave cash as well for us staying over. When she brought over to-go boxes over she informed us we were "almost at the 3 hour mark." There were approx 8 people in the diner. They were not even close to busy and had they been, she wouldnt have had to ask us to leave. She said that its almost been 3 hours. It had been 2 hours and 20 min.My friend was going to be driving for the next 4 hours and then asked for a Sprite. She said "To go?" He asked if it have to be to go. Her irritation was written all over her face (well, eyes and forehead because she was wearing a maskand with out saying anything, she went, got the drink in a regular glass, and dropped off the bill. Well left within 5 minutes. We were stunned by her rudeness, but trying to give her the benefit of the doubt and considered that maybe her manager was pushing her. Regardless of the reason, there were more polite ways to handle it. When we first told her we were going to be chatty, she could have said their policy was firm. We would have gone elsewhere and not been upset. She could have politely said that she was really sorry but she needed the table. We would have questioned that, but we would have left. There was just no reason to be rude. We always tip well and ask ahead of time if our staying longer is OK. Weve never had a waitress be so disdainful. It was really strange. We wont be returning despite the food being good.
The food was arrived quickly! Delicious food and nice service!!
This was my first visit to Mels. I had the best short rib I have eaten in years. The vegetables and mashed potatoes were also excellent. This was truly delicious comfort food. And the service was exceptional. I will return.
The server was friendly and nice. Took care us really good. The food came out really fast. The food was ok for the price but chili was better than I thought but oily. Garlic parmasan cheese was tates good but too oily. Hamburger bun was really good but patty was just ok. Too much sauce. I think sandwich option tastes better than burgers. One of my family member got it and looked good and he enjoyed it. Cornslaw was fresh but too much mustard seeds. I will go back one more time to try.
Staff was super friendly and the environment and atmosphere is always so cool. The espresso milkshake is absolutely amazing and the spicy chicken sandwich is good, the only thing is that the spicy chicken sandwich was a little too salty. Other then that it’s great service and taste amazing.
Mels drive in got the best milkshake shake in town. Very rich and thick :)
My girlfriend thoroughly enjoyed her Nutella French Toast. I also loved my Classic Buttermilk Pancakes. We both added some extras that hit the spot... totally delicious. Food came out quickly, and our server was awesome 👌🏼
Mels is a great neighborhood diner. We had a large group and sat outside. The inside looks cozy and is a vintage diner feel The Acadia toast looked amazing and was probably really good since I couldnt find a way to steal a bite. That staff was friendly and helpful too.So way just 3 stars ... I had the burrito and was very underwhelmed. Everyone else in our party enjoyed their particular meals so from that perspective I would tell you to try Mels ... just maybe avoid the burrito 😜
We had breakfast, and it was really good. Great service and good coffee. Would recommend.
Great food and service. Upgrade your breakfast and casual dining. My friend visiting from San Diego wanted to dine at a popular chain. I refused.I’m not a diner girl but this place was awesome. Fresh squeezed orange juice. My little guy order fried chicken and potato salad. I ate classic 2 eggs, bacon and crispy hash browns. We loved it all. My friend loved his steak. Our server Julie was fabulous and helpful. I’m definitely going back to try the burger and potpie.
Nice and cozy place. The food was great but the service wasnt that good and the server served us with regular fries instead of American cut fries, but as I said the food was very delicious so that covered everything.
Thanks to yelp i found this hidden little gem ...a lil flash from the past ...even though it was for take out i enjoyed listening to oldskool music from the jukebox while i waited for my food ..many of the dinning tables have mini jukeboxes and for only 25cents :it was a blissful morning ..i sure enjoyed my expresso and breakfast burrito ...sadly i had left my cell in the car...i wasnt able to capture the moment
Hello hungry Valley peeps! Lets get straight to the point. Judging on pricing to taste. The food is mediocre. Possibly even a little over priced. We got the “Famous Mel Burger” with a side of sweet potato fries and some mozzarella sticks. The taste of the burger was nothing special and a bit overcooked. Much like McDonalds, this patty was mostly likely frozen along with the fries. There is no doubt that the mozzarella sticks were frozen as they came hard as a rock, greasy, and looked far from fresh. The shake is probably the best thing on the menu and the silverware is a tad bit old. I would say the unique experience of the restaurant does somewhat make up for the lack of food quality, as it does have a nice 50’s vibe with it’s own radio filled with classics on each booth. The food server was very helpful considering the lack of help in the restaurant. The restaurant did refund us the Mozzarella Sticks as the server noticed that we did not enjoy them at all. Overall we would this Restaurant a decent 5/10. Thank you and stay hungry :D
Food as really good. Nice proportions with the perfect price and the service was excellent! We will definitely be back 😊
Classic diner experience. Just like American Graffiti. The mushroom omelette was great. Nicely done with onions and green peppers. It came with grill potatoes which were tastey slightly peppered and cooked just right.Mom smiled as we left the restaurant in the blue eyed girl mustang.
This particular Mels left my family with a customer service experience worth 6 stars. The waiter Chris and the busser (didnt catch his namewere beyond excellent. They were charming, funny, and genuinely friendly. Both were attentive to my kids, and every detail of our order right; Chris was even generous with requested extras. The food itself was standard American Diner style fare, but better than I remembered. Nothing looked or tasted like it had been refrigerated at any point, and the portion sizes were quite fair. Even though seating was space out due to COVID-19 restrictions, every table seemed to be having a quality time, and my family was no exception. Would visit again! Unfortunately, I didnt think to take photos until after the meal was done.P.S.The Espresso shake with cherries was very, very good. Perfect balance of being thick but not too thick, sweet but not cloyingly so, and the ground espresso beans brought both flavor and a delightful element to the mouth feel (dont lie, thats a big part of milkshakes).
This place was awesome!! I came here on graduation Day June 9th, 2020!! Class of 2020! The food was amazing, I got the original Mel’s Burger and Nachos!! The waitress I had was very nice, she got me graduation balloons🎈She goes to a sister school of mine! I meant to tag her on Instagram but I can’t remember if her name was spelled Zeraiza or not. She was very nice an professional and nice. I want to thank her so much again! With COVID going on and all, she made my day that day!! I will be visiting again soon 💖
Mels drive-in its great for that classic car enthusiasts or Somebody that just loves the 1950 or the 60 They did open in 1947 I believe somewhere in San Francisco. Make sure you try one of their great Burger And you can never go wrong with ordering one other amazing milkshakes!!
Had a chocolate cake because it was one of the few items less than $10. Im sure the food here is to die for, but for a budget-conscious individual, so are the prices.
The service was wonderful. The food was only so so. My ham and cheese omelet was very dry. The burgers were good but the fries were very hard. They have impossible burgers which is very nice.
The Nutella French Toast was OUT OF THIS WORLD!! It was even better than it looks. There was so much we couldnt finish it all, but best believe we took it home with us to finish. We also had a El Rancho Burrito and it was probably one of the BEST burritos Ive ever had. It wasnt too spicy, but it was just the right amount of kick. Very GOOD!! Definitely be back.
I ordered the Short Rib slider it was yummy. It came with Creamy Tomatoe Basil Soup and it was delicious! My bf ordered the Eggcellent Breakfast Sandwich with fries and get loved it. His daughter ordered the Sunrise breakfast sandwich in which she loved too. It came with seasoned potatoes. The portions were great. We had left orders to take home. The place is super cute & clean. Old school diner style. The bathroom is clean, but its only one stale. You seat yourself & pay upfront. They have 15% off for VETERANS❤🙏👍🏾Theres a server name Nicole and she is lovely! Shes so nice & has the brightest smile. My boyfriend and I were dining and this younger couple could not pay for their food. For some odd reason their card would not going through. Im noisy so I was kind of listening. The manager did his best to try and work it out with the young couple discreetly. Needless to say, my bf and I paid for their food and let them know so they could stop stressing out. The only reason why im telling this story is because the manager was so nice & I love that! He cares enough to be discreet & help the young couple. I love the positivity.
A very quaint place, perfect for a lovely high school first date. I visit with my husband to pretend we were back in the 1950s without racism haha. Definitely take a date here, they will fall in love as you fall back in time.
I love old school diners and Mels Drive-In is one that would take you back in time. Great music from the 50s playing on the jukebox and excellent food I strongly recommend it.
A mixed bag...Its far more expensive than the portions and quality warrant, and that alone would be enough disincentive for a return visit. Despite that, Im tempted to give 4 🌟 s based entirely on the outstanding service. Jessica was so accommodating and imperturbable. She comes across like a genuinely kind lady. This place is lucky to have her.
Absolutely loved and enjoyed the food at Mels. The prices are reasonable, the staff are attentive and restaurant is clean. The parking is limited sometimes; however, its worth the trip if you are in the area. Great for family. When I am in the is area, no other restaurant will do.
