A medieval trader's house restored to its former 14th-century glory, open April to September.
I real unexpected find. Absolutely original. Check opening times.
One gets a feeling for the people who lived and worked here. The interior walls are now plain and the floor uncovered. A house without the modern soft furnishings and electric light. It is worth a visit and will will not take long to see it all.
The member of staff was lovely and knowledgeable, but the house itself was such a disappointment. No information in the rooms, we were literally there for ten minutes.
Beautiful and well preserved
Really interesting if quick visit. Nice to realise how some of the original maritime trading history of my home town is still visible despite all the changes Southampton has been through.
A total waste of 10 minutes. Spent most of my time in the toilet provided just outside the building. I certainly wouldnt pay £5 to enter. No information about the building, nothing to read, just a simple quick browse around the few rooms the building offers and that is it. I honestly dont know how English Heritage can charge for this historic building, it looks neglected and youre better off spending an extra pound to visit the Tudor House and Garden which is located in the next street along as that is a lot better value and worth your time. Avoid the Medieval Merchant House if you have any sense.
Gorgeous in its simplicity if you like old building afew in this area
Weekends are free entry. If you like to see the old construction of 14th century, do give a visit
Not much to see here!
Was OK for what it was. Definitely needs more light and more information boards
Well worth the visit.
The only remaining merchant house in Southhampton. Showcasing how it wouldve looked, during the rich merchantile days.
Good place to visit to have an idea about the local history. It would help if some signs where in each telling a bit of a story. We did asked some questions and the receptionist was very knowledgeable. Welcoming place.
Its a great way to step back into the past and enjoy one of the few remaining historic places in Southampton. I went for a Saturday day out and I enjoyed it. My only criticism is that more lighting is needed and maybe some more information around the house. I knew all there is to know about this place because I love history and read up on places like that , but causal visitors may need some more information which they would have had no way of finding in the house.
Spooky 😁
Love this place. SO much history and the exhibits are excellent here. Have visited twice and still discovering things I never spotted first time there.Great for kids.
Not much to see. No guided tour because of pandemic. Saw everything within 5mins.
Like stepping back intime. This restored Merchants house is like going back to Medieval times. Worth visiting if your in Southampton
A small house, great for a quick look in a busy day. It is also rather special as it is one of the only medieval houses still in tacked in the world. There isnt any information on displays but there is a guide which gives plenty of detail about the house and the surrounding area.
Fantastic piece of history. Todays on-sight historian, Fern, provided insightful info and enthusiasm that connects the house to the area and people of the time.
Small but perfectly restored medieval house. A lack of explanatory boards actually helps with the atmosphere, you really do feel like you have stepped back in time. Any questions we had were expertly and confidently handled by the person looking after the house.
Quite a quick visit - allow maybe 30-40 mins, but absolutely charming insight into how people lived. Well worth a visit - itll set your imagination alight. Dont be shy about asking the person on the desk what the rooms were used for - they lay there when we went was very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions.
A nice place to visit, interesting displays, activities also on when we visited. Places to have a picnic but also a cafe.
Very small polite helpers not slot to see
Interesting to look at, but would benefit from more written information being available as you look.round it.
We came here as part of a day visiting English heritage and National trust properties. You dont have to be a member of English heritage to visit here as non members pay the entry charge. The house is set on 2 levels. The rooms have furniture in them depicting the era from which the house is from. Its nice to see how people used to live. The lady at reception was very friendly and informative. Thanks English Heritage for saving this propery and continue your good work.
Not much to see.
House, which captures the history of Southampton really well. Beautiful herb garden.
Excellent restoration - a small building but a gem.
Good place...
A rare and wonderful building. Worth my 250 mile journey to see it. Reconstructed interiors add further interest to the structure.
Amazingly interesting peek into the Medieval story of Southampton
Excellent, a must visit😊
Stumbled across this heritage building by chance. Most unusual location in the middle of an estate of flats. Little house but I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.
Very interesting and lots of history to learn about
Its a shame there is nothing to read about each room as you go into it as although its beautifully set up nothing is clear. I remember having a recording to listen to years ago. Kids and I had a nice half an hour. They especially enjoyed dressing up.
Well preserved.
Wooow 😍
amazing
Didnt go inside.
Seen from the outside.
Great piece of history
This is a fourteenth century Marchants house. Very nice to see and enjoy.
Great morning out with two young kids.
A quick visit. Beautiful little place. Bit of a shame there is no information panels anyway but the lady on reception was very happy to answer any questions.
Love it great place for history
Small English Heritage Property , presented as it may have looked in its heyday , with its dirt floor and reproduction furniture . You are free to explore the few rooms on your own and open and inspect the reproduction furniture. Not a great deal to see and it wont take hours up of you time but this is more quality over quantity. The property has no carpark to it , but there is limited parking on the surrounding roads which is pay and display .... oh and pop round the corner the The Duke Of Wellington Pub whilst you are there , old World charm & friendly atmosphere
Do not expect to see much here, but its fair to say that its well worth a visit. Nice little house in the middle of an estate!
Interesting to look but pity so much litter around
A little pricey for what it is, and Im not really sure what it is. Pretty from the outside, mostly.
