Long-running, low-key neighborhood Irish bar & grill with a pub-grub menu.
Good food and friendly service... what you expect from an Irish pub near a college campus
Phenomenal bartender! Fun atmosphere!
I feel like I’ve been coming here since the day I was born, even though that would be illegal. If McGoverns had a membership program, I would be a triple platinum gold elite ambassador. McGoverns is an institution of the local community. In one word, classic. The food is good, the beer is great, and the staff are even better. Even if you can’t remember half the time you were here, you can rest assured that 100% of the time you were here was a good time.
Superb staff. Super friendly and helpful.
Good food and drinks, but one of the staff who always seems to be working is rude and unhelpful. Owner is cool, though.
The best burgers around! The food is excellent.
This place is all about the service. If you want to go somewhere and be treated well, go to McGoverns!
Great food and service! Always a great experience at McGovern’s. Local college bar so can get busy during the academic year on weekends and holidays but during the summer/lunch time it’s really tame. Food is always fresh and servers are always really nice.
Burgers and fries are great. Great selection of beers. Nice lunch spot.
Decent burger, drinks were good, Kevin our waiter was awesome!
We had a party for my Irish immigrant Dad here yesterday. My Dad actually worked at this bar in his 20s. No he is 80. Great food, great staff, wonderful time and the Guiness and Smithwicks Ale (try it if you havent beforeare fresh and tasty. Beer goes fast here and no time to go stale in the keg
A fun pub. Mo the bartender is the best! Stop by for a drink, a burger or wings. Check out the decor
Too bad I like this bar but they have a Horrible service , rude bartender, very slow and I had to pay at the bar after waiting 15 minutes for the bartender to come for the bill. I will never go back again.
Met to pre-game for a volleyball match at Rutgers Newark. Friendly atmosphere. Guinness and Smithwicks on tap. Really good Caesar salad with grilled chicken. Really good Caesar dressing and chicken
One of my favorite bars in Newark! Love the renovations
Really cool bar in downtown Newark. We came here after seeing a show at the NJPAC. Great staff, cool vibes, nice area - definitely recommend
The owner himself had greeted my part of 6 almost immediately apon entering. He elected my boyfriend to be the representative of the group. Having him perform a “initiation” which was also a classy way to do a sobriety check. It was our first time and we were sober but very excited to take a break from the routine bar frequented at our local campus. There was a large selection of drinks and cocktails. A packed bar and even a back room that was also very busy. Allowing for tables to be put together for group and private parties. DEFINITELY A GREAT TIME,& WE ALL AGREED TO COME BACK AGAIN!!
Nostalgic, very friendly and attentive bartender
Great food needs to improve músic. There is no diversity in music.
The renovations look great. Really Nice bartender and server. Historic place. Like many bars in the area parking can be an issue at times. Look forward to going back for many more years to come.
We stopped by Mc Govern on a weekday noon for lunch. Its situated in the busy area of Newark, so parking is sorta difficult to get during lunch hours. The restaurant has nice Irish pub ambiance, but appears somewhat stale with its interiors and furniture. Food wise I did like my corn beef rueben. The ingredients blended well. Sweet potato fries were good too.We will visit this place often since it’s a decent lunch spot.
Great place to drink some beers with friends. Nice music and great staff. Recommend.
Fantastic food and staff. First time that we ate here and we were treated like family. A must go to place.
Nothing to say! Everything was perfect. Staff is friendly meals are delicious.
Service was great burgers very good. Guinness was poured right and fresh. Nice Irish pub in the heart of Newark
Very good. Staff was excellent food was good. Fast easy and a great bar area.
One of my favorite places to grab a drink in Newark! My coworkers and I go here for pretty much all of our celebratory events and good ol happy hour. But listen THE BURGERS ARE TO DIE FOR! (Closely followed by the stuffed jalapenos and mozzarella sticks-- anyway go here thank me later.
Great place, has an amazing vibe. Food is a good too, but a little expensive for what you get. Paid 15$ for three small pieces of fish it was phenomenal don’t get me wrong just wish portions were a little bigger
Thank God they re-opened! McGoverns is my go to for everything. Meetings, stress wings, celebrations...everything. Food is great. Staff is amazing. Not so sound cliche but it is where "everybody knows your name". LOL Kevin is the nicest server in the world. They all are great! When in Newark you must stop at McGoverns. Wings and sweet potato fries are my go to. The burgers are really good too.
I love this place the wings are amazing and the service is great. Everyone from the servers (shout out to Kevin and all the serversto the bartenders( shout out to Mo and all the bartendersyour experience at McGovern will definitely be a great one. Make sure to come and Have a good time.
Nice Irish Bar, good food and plenty of beers on tap. Right in the heart of downtown Newark.
The service is your typical irish bar service, rude bartender, decent food. However their menu is old, and THEY DO NOT HAVE HAPPY HOUR SPECIALS, so if thats your reason to go DO NOT
Went with some co-workers.. Great place, clean area, food was awesome!! Had a good time..
Food: Quite good, worth the price you pay, decent size portion.Location: Near Rutgers and NJIT, so the surrounding area is kept much better than 95% of Newark. Entrance is very easy to spot.Ambience: Spacious, plenty of seating, interesting Irish and American artwork/memorabilia on the walls. A big bar as you walk in with colorful characters for better... or for worse.Service: The server was nice with a positive attitude, but took forever for each step of the dining process besides bringing the credit card back after I paid. But they did apologize, repeatedly for the many delays. Make sure you have two hour lunch break when venturing here, luckily my wife did.
The food and drinks were so good! The prices here are fair too. The staff was really nice as well. They know how to treat their customers.
Got a bug in my drink due to their outdoor dinning set up being close to the trees. They said we out of lids and refused to refund my drink or give a new one. Talk about awful polices in Mangement..
McGoverns is amazing. Great location and menu options. Amazing and super friendly staff that takes care of you and makes it a great experience everytime. The outdoor siting is cool, fun and brings back the fun. 🥂Keep it up!
Decent bar, recent renovation so its clean inside. I like Irish bars 🤷🏽♀️ neither good or bad, just comfortable space with chill vibes.Perfect if your in the area after work or class.
An eclectic combination of people gathered in a friendly and warm environment, that is how I would describe McGoverns Tavern. Excellent service and good bar food. It is newly renovated and provides an atmosphere conducive to the bar crowd as well as families.
Amazing.. If you havent been.. Now is the time to go! Completely renovated! Sean, Scully, Pat, Mike and Morgan are the best!
Classic Irish pub with good food, reasonable prices, and friendly service. Recently renovated to be much larger but still has that old-fashioned college bar vibe. Great burgers!
Welcome back! Excellent rehab, just like I left it only cleaner and bigger. The wait staff was courteous and knowledgeable. The corned beef Rueben was perfect. My friend had the Dublin Decker, also was rave. With all the college students, 🚧 workers, and lawyers I expect it to always be popping.
One of the best local pubs youll go to. Cozy, warm atmosphere and friendly bartenders. Food is amazing and its the best bacon cheeseburger Ive ever had. Me and my buddies always go there before attending events at the Prudential Center. Its only a short trip down Broad St. and well worth it. Great beer, great food, great people, great prices. You wont be disappointed.
Poor service accompanied by aggressively rude manager and waitress. When you have average food, and treat customers rudely - one can only imagine how you really feel! I was charged extra for onion rings - despite the waitress Alison confirming it was all included; she even pointed to a menu selection of various sides at no charge. When I pointed this out, the Bartender actually shouted at me across the bar, the waitress denied what she said - RUDE, RUDE, RUDE! If a waitress erred, Management should have apologized - absolutely no excuse for this behavior. You compounded a small error and turned it into A BIG FAT RUDE UNFORGETTABLE INSTANCE OF POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. For a restaurant, everything is customer service. Excellent work (not)!
Fantastic customer service, great burgers and fries among other foods. Plenty choices of beer and mixed drinks. Great quality of people working and patrons. Plenty of room too. I love it here.

4 hour layover at Penn station, perfect spot to charge Phone and avoid hockey traffic. menu looks super affordable too! Hard to find tho, had to sneak in the back door as it is in a gated univ parking lot... Looks Mexican painted from outside too, but my intuition paid off, I have like a livings room of space to myself and a lovely server
Great staff and atmosphere. Good college bar. Old school Irish setup. Food is secretly good its everything youll need to have a good night out. Try the lava fries!
Huge selection on draft, the best service Ive experienced at a bar, reasonably priced menu for food, great environment, and free wifi to boot. Great place. Earned a stop from me each time when I traveling through. Have been 10+ times.
Though the painted door maybe nearly impossible to find among the 4 others that dont open, the inside is far bigger than expected and has a huge bar. It is obviously popular with locals as it was surprisingly packed on a Wednesday afternoon when the temperature was below freezing. Service was friendly, though very slow and I had to pay at the bar after waiting 15 minutes for the waitress to come for the bill. Prices were also on the high side for pub food and nothing was spectacular and the fries were very bland. The French onion soup was lacking flavor though the chicken sandwich was good. At least the Guinness was poured well and tasty.
