Mbizi Forest has been famous because it is the only remaining big forest near Sumbawanga town and other environs in Rukwa region. In the past it used to be rich in wildlife of both large and small mammals. The large mammals include giant forest pigs, common duikers, dikdiks, red colobus and sykes monkeys. Buffaloes were prevalent but have now become extinct (Ruffo et al. 1987). There are also rock hynas.
