Mayan World Museum of Mérida in Izamal

Educational place to take kids. We had fun with the whole family. Theres a lot to see so plan your day around it. Costco in Merida is a short drive away (like less than a mile or soso we picked up lunch there after we spent the morning and early afternoon at the museum.

The building is very impressive from the outside but the museum is only on the ground floor. No real hero piece, best part are the interactive videos, but still nothing you wont see on YouTube.

One of the bigger museums in Mexico. It has a large rotating exhibit and many permanent ones. My favorite part were some of the carvings from Mayan ruins.

Nice museum in city. Good walk through with lots of items to view. Nice most descriptions are in Spanish, Mayan, and English. Parking was nice.

Good history of the Mayan people...for a new museum, I was disappointed. I thought I would b going back several times to cover the topics / exhibits...we did it in less than 80min reading all the boardsThe ancient mayans was what I was expecting but that was half the story.For a new museum, its missing a lot of the new interactive ways to present its material...

I went on Sunday with my family. I showed my new residence ID from Yucatan and we went for free. Kids didnt pay and only grandma paid 25 pesos with the card for elder she has from another state so that was the rate. It is temporary exposition about bycicles and then you go to the permanent Mayan exposition. Worth a visit and complement with visits to the Museos de sitio at the arqueological sites.

This is not a world class museum, but as the biggest city in the area, it should be amazing for exhibiting artifacts from the nearby world class sites. Sorry to report it does not… it’s not good. They need to bring someone in from Mexico City’s main museum to sort this out. There is no logic to the layout. First they send you to a history of bicycles exhibit (no jokethen into the main part where it starts to get going, only to stumble into some sort of catholic “something”. As the heart of the area, I expected much much better. It slightly recovers to show the odd castaways from the basement of the excellent museum in CDMX…. Just wow. Waste of time and money. The local people deserve a much better museum. The two mini temples look fake, like plaster casting. 2 stars for something local but…. Highly disappointing.

Beautiful building. The museum is full of cultural artifacts and you can spend hours of your day getting lost in all the Mayan history and beauty.

Awesome place for people who wants to know more about Mayan culture.

Quite a disappointment. Campeche Maya museum is half the size but very well done. I’m a big museum goer and I had high expectations with such a big building and I heard it was a referent for Maya history. The main Maya permanent exposition it’s quite confusing, you will begin learning about nowadays Maya, then you’ll learn about how Christianity transformed them, then jump to their calendar, with some disconnected videos along the way. Most items exposed don’t have any tag whatsoever, you don’t know what they are, their age or where do they come from. To finish up and eerie fixation repeated again and again through the museum with the Spanish conquest and murder of the Maya.

Very fascinating exhibition, allthough I am not a real Museum-Person. I would rather suggest the historical sights, that are also quite Close.

This is a great reference for Mayan culture. Loads of interactive displays. There was an area that explains the bicycle culture in Merida.

Informative! & a must do while in Mérida! Very well-thought out museum filled with information in Spanish, English, and Mayan. Its a huge museum, but very possible to read everything and view all the exhibits in 3 hours.

For me personally this is the most disappointing museum I’ve been too. Had high expectations when we arrived since this is a nice building. Inside the museum there is not much to see actually.

Incredible! I learned a lot about the Mayan culture, both past and present. I highly recommend starting with the guided tour. The English tour leaves from the lobby at 11, and the Spanish tour at 12.

Loved this museum so much, educational, beautiful and a great way to spend a few hours. Fair warning you are not allowed to video tape inside the museum (I did until I was told not to ooppsnot suggesting anyone do this. There is alot to see and rooms to enter with short movies to learn about the ways of the Mayan people good for family, dates, or solo trip! Cost was 150 pesos =$7.38 USD

Nicely designed museum, though the architecture seems a little odd for the subject matter. The pieces interesting though there is too much of a reliance on replicas.

Great museography, very modern. Some nice pieces of art (some less interesting), and a few awesome animated videos, very creative. Some English translations are missing (especially for the videos), but its still worth it. The staff is very helpful and friendly.

Very bad museum. There is no logic in how the civilisation is presented & sometimes you have a translation in English, sometimes not.It could have been worth it but it really ain’t due to lack of coherence in the way things are presented.

I found this museum very informative and interesting, and a great supplement to my visits to several archeological sites around the Yucatán peninsula. Most of the information is also in English, in addition to Spanish and Maya. I went on a Sunday afternoon and my worries about crowdedness turned out to be unfounded. I spent close to two hours, but wished I had some more time, theres a lot to read as well as interactive screens to explore.

It’s a must when you visit Merida, everything is explained in Maya, Spanish and English. Unfortunately the videos are only in Spanish, but you’ll have plenty to enjoy

Great museum experience. Very respectful for the Mayan culture

Huge museum with many dioramas, audiovisuals & some few lovely artefacts. It does have Mayan artefacts, and these are indeed really beautiful, but in comparison to MNA in Mexico City - or even the much smaller Fuerte San Miguel in Campeche - these canonical works are fewer, and far more glossily and politically contextualized. Much of the building is given over to offices, auditoriums and empty space: the permanent collection itself is confined to the first floor.

Nice museum worth visiting. You can learn a lot more about the Mayans here than at the ruins. Lots of neat artifacts with plaques that have info about the item. Only complaint is most of the plaques are very low to the ground and on metal so they are difficult to read. Most plaques are in 3 languages. Spanish, English and I assume Mayan.

English explenations, also whole history of Mayans, not only pyramids... There are not so much real artefacts from pyramids as you would expect, the best one is in Mexico city

Easy to walk with plaques to explain what you are looking at. I had a wheel chair the museum supplied for free. The exhibits are awesome. You can take photos as long as you dont use flash. Take your time and enjoy its magic!

Meh. Strange organisation of exhibition, starting from modern days. Museum is not big at all, even the building is big and modern. Price for that is huge - 150 pesos. In CDMX in Museo Nacional de Antropologia it costs only 80 pesos for much better exhibition

Good museum! It has a lot of explanatory boards and its a joy to go around reading everything. It gives you a really good explanation about the Mayan culture. Highly recommended before going to visit archeological sites that dont have too much explanations inside.

Fantastic place to spend some cool time ! Great statues, architecture, artwork, jewelry etc from the Maya culture. Friendly staff educated me on the types of gods and their place in the Maya/Aztec religious hierarchy. A must see if in Merida highly recommend!

Excellent educational experience for myself and family. Beautifully laid out displays with detailed descriptions in Spanish, English and Mayan for most of the museum.There were some interactive screens which were fun for the kids as well.Quiet environment, low lighting to keep the items on display from deterioration. Cool,Comfortable temperature inside.

Great, specialized museum with a variety of artifacts from all over the Mayan empire. Enjoyed that most of the exhibit descriptions included English too! We also liked that there was a wide perspective of Mayan culture presented - from the explanations about the language, calendar and record keeping to stories and literature written about the culture throughout history, as well as textiles, pottery, jewelry and other artifacts to diagrams and dioramas that helped to explain the culture. We are excited to visit more of the archeological sites in the Yucatan now with all of the new information we gained here!

Nice museum (lots of interesting facts). The visit takes approximatly 1 hour, which is a good length for this kind of museum. One negative point: some of the best infographics in the museum are only in Spanish and Mayan. However 90% of the museum has an English translation.

Disappointment. Very static, compact and by far not a wholesome Mayan story. Not even a mention of cocoa, a ballgame is only briefly mentioned, poor mythology ... Not everything is in English.

Theres indeed a world of Mayan culture and artifacts housed inside this modern structure. Excellent presentation and interesting explanations guide you through this fantastic museum. Definitely worth the 150 pesos admission fee.

Súper friendly staff!! The inside its a little cold but you can always go outside. Lovely display but museum on the small side. You can easily go in and out in about an hour. Projections are in Spanish, so that might be the only downside.

Mayan cultural museum definitely worth a visit when in Mérida. It starts with the story of the dinosaur extinction by meteorites and then extends into Mayan civilization. There are several educational videos that are in Spanish. However, all the main exhibits do have English captions and descriptions. We learned a lot about Mayan history, language, beliefs and customs.

So much potential, too little to offer, the flow is weird, not everything is labeled it translated to English, I would say only 75 %, the building look huge and modern but the exhibitions are quite small. Last year I went to the Mexico City museum of anthropology and in the room dedicated to the Mayan culture they had more information and artifacts than in the Mayan world museum

Less than you expect from what youve probably read, so a bit disappointing. It starts with the meteor impact that killed the dinosaurs which admittedly has something to do with the area, but not with Mayas (its probably there because they didnt have more material). Most stuff is in English, though not all (such as the introductory video). Its still a learning experience, and if you dont have definite plans, I would still suggest a visit (even though its comparatively expensive).

Bar could be a bit nicer and it would be nice if they had the introductory video right at the start in English too, or at least with English subtitles. This is a modern building about 7 km from the old town where they have consolidated the best Mayan artefacts from a range of smaller museums. After buying a ticket you are directed towards a turnstile that takes you into their ‘temporary exhibition’ space, via a small auditorium where they show you a short film about the prehistory (mainlyof the Yucatán. While the items on display were fairly interesting in themselves I would guess that most people who visit the museum are there to see the Mayan exhibits rather than fossils.The Mayan exhibits that you do eventually get to are well worth seeing: some really impressive pieces and they are exhibited well. I’d guess about half of the exhibits have English translations of the Spanish descriptions. It would be nice if it was all translated, but how many of the exhibits in (for examplethe British Museum have information translated into Spanish? None? I stand to be corrected ...A few irritations: there’s no WiFi (which made sorting out an Uber to get us back to the old town complicated, especially as my phone chose that moment to refuse to pick up a 3G/4G - or any - networkand the signing in the museum is virtually non-existent which means you have to be guided between areas by staff; a triumph of style over practicality.Did I mention there was no WiFi...However, it’s well worth the trip out from the centre if you have the time.

AMAZING! I absolutely loved this museum, it was such an educational experience! The displays and artifacts are great, I was very impressed with the attention to detail. Definitely a must see!

Its an awesome museum, big, clean, and very well organized. Theres a lot of Mayan history to learn that u will need more time to read and see everything they have. One very important thing that I learned is that merida is the crater of the meteorite that fell down to the earth and destroy dinosaurs life.

One of the most remarkable museums I’ve been to. Very educational tours. Everything is in Spanish but most script will have English translation. My son was amazed, to find out it is the spot supposably; that was hit by the meteor that extinction the dinosaurs. Just an amazing museum.
