Mathallen Tromsø - Restaurant in Tromso, Norway
Absolutely amazing. From our first step into the restaurant until we left, everything was perfect. The waiters were attentive without being unpleasant. The composition of each and every meal was very well thought through and a piece of art in itself. The chef came to our table twice to personally explain the idea behind the dish and to ensure we enjoy the food.Every second in the restaurant was worth the price tag.An experience we will cherish for years to come.
Quality of food is very good. Delicious meal. The service is not the same quality. They don’t have espresso or coffee like that😟
Was ok, too fancy and pricey for the level of food. Burger was cooked unevenly. Curry soup was tasty and nice but came quite cold. Would i reccomend my friends or go myself again? Probably not. Staff were friendly tho.
Expensive for the quality. The dishes really lack audacity
Nice place and good food!
Great food and ambience.
very professional staff, and nice experience of tasty food.
Delicious high quality four course meal. If you can, go here over the standard dinner option in Tromsø. You pay a bit more but it is so worth it!
Fish was good, but small dish overall.Asking for extra potatoes, but getting small amount. Waiter was dissapointed and turned swiftly away when saying no thanks to dessert. From a place with this high price tag a more professional service is expected.Better value found elsewhere in Tromsø.
A unique fine dining expirience with a local twist. A lot of fish in the menu. Salmon tartar stood out for me the most, very fresh, vernal combination of flavours.Staff is very polite and helpful.
A great restaurant that I managed to snag an early table for my last night in Norway 🇳🇴. Wanted a proper Norwegian feast and was not disappointed. I had the 4 course menu which I thought was excellent value for the portion size and quality of cooking. The staff were very friendly and thankfully spoke excellent English to this uneducated fool. The food was superb and introduced me to some new ingredients that I wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to try outside of Norway. This is an excellent restaurant. I would definitely be a regular if I lived in this beautiful part of the world.
TO DO when visiting Tromso:1. Make sure you have an evening free for dinner at Mathallen2. Book a table at Mathallen3. GO TO MATHALLEN!4. Enjoy the warm embrace of the staff when entering Mathallen. We had this amazing black hair Asian looking lady (no offensewith tattoos. She was amazing!!!5. Experience the simple but classy design6. Order the 6 course menu7. Sit back and let the chefs tickle your scenes. Visual, smell and taste! Its not the cheapest hotel in Tromsø, but its worth every cent!
Great fish soup and amazing collection of vines ! The sommelier is very knowledgeable and provides a great service.
Had my birthday dinner there and had the most wonderful time! The four course menu is definitely worth it! The mix of the tastes, colour, smells and textures is simply perfectly mastered. As I don’t eat meat, they even accepted to change one of the dish with a vegetarian one. I highly recommend!
I can only recommend it! I think there is a big gap between the pictures from the reviews and the reality. The picture don’t do any justice to how it well it was presented and how good the food was.
Good food and friendly service. Can highly recommend! They offer multiple course menus as well as single dishes. Menu is small but very delicious.
Amazing food. Would highly recommend a visit here if you are in Tromsø. Staff were all friendly and the food was outstanding.
Tastefull food with focus on local produce.
Really delicious food. You wont regret taking the wine paired to the menu..
I went with family, we ordered the 3 different main dishes. They were all great, the meat was the most tender Ive ever had and the fish and whale was also amazing. The wegetables and sauses were original and intresting, all with a unique touch. Great compositions, very nice staff whom also knew their wine. The price was quite high, but considering the quality of the food, drinks and service it was definitely fair
Loved Mathallen. Came in for lunch with the aim in ordering a burger ans enjoying a beautiful glass of wine. That I did. Amazing. Great knowledge in wines, great ambience and staff but most of all, amazing food. Great work guys
Superb tasting menu with a great choice of wine. Definitely one for booking well ahead of your trip to Tromsø you will not be disappointed!Friendly and engaged staff too.
One of the coziest places in town, delicious food, everything was made with incredible attention to the smallest detail. The staff is sweet and friendly. The wine list is beautiful too.Its just such a lovely experience!
The taste of Tromso for us is hereMust try Nordic salmon ceviche, COD as catch of the day and the meatsOnly one thing - double check the number of wine glasses in the bill, we find one extra there)
Beautiful and tasty lunch at Mathallen 👍Good service and location. Recommended 👏
Nice restaurant and tasty food. Unfortunately, choices during lunch time is quite limited. Also, portion size could be a bit more generous.
Even though the place might look understated and a bit unassuming from the outside, its quite the nice little gem for a dinner with care to details. The local raw ingredients are carefully put together to give genuinely amazing tasting experiences. We had the raindeer, and far from being the kind of tourist trap dish sometimes you get served in Norway it was perfectly medium rare, juicy and tender with the proper sides. The wine menu is extensive and show a great attention for different taste and palates, and finding a good pairing for the food should be easy.Staff was polite and confident, not too intrusive but supporting when needed, just as I prefer it to be.Allin all a very nice and quite unexpected fine dining experience in a relaxed and not too formal setting.
Found this gem in tromso. Food, wine, service ambience of a very high quality. Not cheap but in this price range Aud $50 for main, aud $30 for entry you will be happy to pay this once youve tried other restaurants in town.We both had the de-boned beef rib with a nice glass of barbeta, and every mouthful was delicious.Desserts not a huge selection but also unique and delicious.Would go back again and again just for the beef rib...but am sure the love snd attention to detail is present in every dish.
4-course menu was really good. Main dish Sirloin of reindeer was awesome. Very recommend!!!
Great food and awesome wine selection. I had scallops which were just jelly in the middle. Fish was perfect with a crispy outer hiding jucy flakes of obviously fresh pollock.
Service at Mathallen was very good. The decoration is very nice and welcoming. The lunch menu was not as good as we were hoping for. Potatoes with the cod were not great, and the fish burger without taste. An average experience after all.
Good or I should rather say "acceptable". Cant complain coz you get what is sold, its not bad, properly cooked/prepared but really nothing special. I found it too expenssive for what it is and the waiter gave us some attitude and spent more time flinging around one of the yound blond lady in the kitchen or on the phone than taking care of the clients (4 people). Im nice to give a 3* actually... without the waiter and 5-10% cheaper (for what it is commonand you dessrve an easy 4*
Suggested from our Airbnb host, visited on the night of my birthday. Had a really lovely dinner. Tiny little restaurant with a welcoming atmosphere. Not a huge variety of choices for mains, but the ones they have are amazing. Got the catch of the day and the reindeer. The dishes are curated by eye. Amazing presentation and perfect combination of flavours. The waitress explains you the dish once at the table. For sure recommended if you are going to be in Tromsø. Make sure you book your table in advance though since the restaurant is pretty tiny and can get filled up easily and quickly.
Delicious food prepared with local products
Read positive reviews about this place and heard prices were reasonable given Norwegian prices. Booked table in evening and upon taking my seat and seeing prices wanted to tip over the table and run...however, so pleased I didnt. The food was nothing short of divine, local ingredients and quintessentially Norwegian. I had cat fish whilst my wife had reindeer which both were absolutely first class. The waitress was very friendly and explained our dishes thoroughly - a nice touch. OK - so the mains start at £35 and youll pay £10 for a bottle of beer but hey, this is Norway. If youre planning on splashing out on one restaurant in Tromso and want to taste local food; make it Mathallan
A very nice restaurant with an exciting menu. The place is small, with very nice interior. The acoustic is bit the best, and was quite loud when the restaurant was full.We selected the taste-menu, with, it my memory serves me right, 8 dishes. What came out of the kitchen ranged from very good to quite bland. The soup with dried fish was the biggest disappointment, just no taste. Also the waffle with fish roe was a hit and miss in my opinion. In contrast was the herring and the reindeer very good, except I was a bit unlucky with one of the pieces of reindeer beeing quite though. All in all a nice, but a bit varied experience food wise. I think some of the dishes were just too complicated for my taste. The service was perfect, with friendy, and knowledgeable waiters. Very nice information about the food, and several good tips about wine and beer that matched the food.
The right place if you want eat something of real quality! The dish with gamberetti salad was amazingly tasty and fresh!Theres also a little market to buy the great local specialities !Prices a little bit high as everywhere in Tromso.Nice and hospitable staff.Place not so big!
Excellent coffee. Friendly staff and great design. Very cool place they even have art in the toilet !
Really really good food inspired from northern norway. The menu was nicely set together and with perfectly accompanying wines. Best food experience in Tromsø, maybe even in Norway. Not very pricey even for non Norwegians compared to what you get. This is highly recommend and a must place to eat while you are here!
Nice restaurant serving Norwegian cuisine. Friendly service.
Summary: Amazing local food, awesome service, relaxed atmosphere, gourmet food.Great place to have a taste of Norway, they have a great food selection with locally sourced items that all have a story. I choose one of their multi-course options, while my girlfriend chose their catch of the day. I have to say, both options were amazing! As they brought each of my courses, they told me the story behind each one which adds to the experience of being here. I loved this restaurant and I have to say, the food, service, and ambiance are all top-notch here.
A well-decorated but simple room presents an understated introduction for what the menu has to offer. The best marinated herring dish Ive ever tasted served as a suitable starter (had it twicefor a wonderful tomato and fish soup as thick as Catalan Romesco sauce (with almonds to boot). Main course was the monkfish of the day with sublime creamy sauce and a "steak" of chargrilled pointed cabbage on the side. The three dishes were excellent but the first and last make my shortlist of "worth a detour." Chocolate cake was more like a parfait - haute patisserie nevertheless. An unambiguous 5 stars. One of the best meals this year. Mathallen lives by its mission statement, shared by Chef Gunnar Jensen when he came to our table: "We cook what we like to eat." And by the gods do they like to eat well!
Amazing food and service. We would come back!
Ate lunch here and the food was nowhere near as good as it should have been. We had the burger and it was small and tasteless, and the clipfish made no sense - definitely not worth 235kr!!! The restaurant is nicely decorated, otherwise it would get a 1 star review
Arctic char was perfect, cod fresh, pork cheeks tender, sauces delicious, wine pairing lovely, service impeccable. Casual elegance. Truly a top notch restaurant that would do extremely well in any city in the world. Reservations essential.
Easy to find and it has a nice industrial look with open cuisine. The menu is amazing, we took the 6course menu. The food is local with a mainly fish when we were there. The food tastes amazing! With very good combinations. And small appetizers to start of with. Our compliments for that. The service was okay. There were three girls working. They helped us correctly, the youngest one welcomed us. Once we ordered our 6course menu, they brought delicious appetizers, simple but nicely presented. The older waitress of the three brought our food, most courses that is. At first she explainened everything, but after a while she left part out. And she never looked us in the eye. She seemed a bit off, not interested in us maybe? And at a certain point she took 2courses back without saying anything. But halfway through she went home. The younger girl continued serving us. She did ask how Everything was going. And explained the dishes, as far as she could. She did not know everything on the menu. But that was complety fine with us. She tried her best, showed interest and did her best. We could ask her questions and have a laugh with her. So overall the food was superb! Service was okay. Some room for improvement, but it was good enough. This is definetly a place to go if i come back. Thanks
I enjoyed a three-course tasting menu for dinner. With wine it was ~1600NOK, not bad for the quality. There was a fish dish which was absolutely incredible, 5/5. The lamb was cooked medium, a little more cooked than I expected but seasoned well and with good sides (especially the lamb fat sticks), 4/5. The dessert was phenomenal as well, some raspberry mousse and chocolate cake with some sort of vanilla ice cream but with several more layers of flavor, 5/5. The waitress did not know to explain the dishes and when asked had only basic knowledge, but the casual aspect with chef-quality food can be refreshing. All in all a great place to go for some finer food if you are wiling to spend the money.
We enjoyed a nice brunch at Mathallen. Its not difficult to find this place in Tromso city; just along the main road. Lunch option was till 4pm. They had an open concept kitchen. Food prices are quite similar among the area. There was a daily lunch special promotion for 100 nok - reindeer sausage . It was good! Pickled onions added a zest to the salty sausages, it was a good combination. mash potatoes were creamy and thick too.We also tried the beef burger and cod fish. They tasted superb. the beef burger buns were toasted with butter and a hint of cinnamon, very unique taste. We never tried anything like this. Fries were crispy and freshly fried.Cod fish was fresh and good. It was a good combination with the white sauce. Our meal came up to a total of 545 nok.
LOVE THIS PLACE! Proper Norwegian food, and if you go at lunchtime its super-reasonably priced; you can get the lunch of the week (was a soya glazed rib sandwichfor just 100NOK. Service was grand but be warned - it gets very busy; we tried to go again today and they were fully booked till 3pm.
The service here was not the best, but the food certainly makes up for it. We had the menu and it was delicious. They have the most diversified wine list I saw in town so far. The dining room is nice, but some of the tables can be really close together. All in all, its definitely worth to come back for dinner again.
