Materuni Waterfall - Tourist attraction in Same, Tanzania
Highly recommend! I came with a guide from Shimbwe Meadows Guesthouse (highly recommend!and there was no entrance fee. As we got closer to the waterfall, there were a few tours we passed that had already visited the waterfall, but once we arrived (around 12pmwe only shared the waterfall with one other couple. It was nice to see and great to learn about the villages and the Chagga people on the way. I would recommend a guide that is Chagga or knows about the Chagga people so you can understand more about the culture and the agriculture. From the Shimbwe guesthouse our walk was only about 30 minutes and it was an easy walk. I also recommend stopping by Dr. Coffee for a tour. He’s been living in the village his whole life and has lots of knowledge about the history of coffee. I visited plenty of coffee farms around the world and his was a unique experience filled with education, singing, and dancing!
A wonderful waterfall in the foot of Kilimanjaro mountain. The waterfall is very high and majestic to stand right below it. A short hike of about 45 minutes is needed to reach the waterfall from the place that the 4x4 car leaves you. This is usually part of a day-trip where after the hike you get to try local stuff like homemade coffee from nearby coffee plantations and banana beer/honey.
Been there for more than 50 times as a client support and guide is a beautiful place to visitAnd everyone likes it
Better get your knees ready😄. Hiking ain’t for the weak😅
A beautiful dayClear views of the Kibo peakTasty Coffee.
Great Waterfall for Sure.Wonders nature
A fascinating walk up and down the mountains. To see the waterfalls is a unique experience.A challenge that worth while.
The waterfalls is amazing, the entrance fee is 10000 Shillings, the only problem is they dont let you go in without a guide which I dont understand.. but its beautiful
The people around just run for money to get. Super anoying and pushy. Every person on the street allready will ask for money. After rejecting they start bagging. A very unconfortable situation for any visitor. Just a waste of time, i recoment not to go there...
Beautiful 80 meter waterfall.
Mesmerizing! The hiking is easy and nice
Hike was long but the waterfalls was beautiful to see
Trekking distance is exhilarating but the views down there are spectacular.I visited the falls around 7pm night and was the best time Ive ever had of my life..
One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Tanzania. A great hike and a great place to connect with nature. The water are really cold but if youre up to it its great! I recommend staying at Shimbwe meadows guesthouse. That way you can stay away from town, and you can plan more hikes and cultural tours in the area.
Really amazing waterfall though takes you some sweat to reach there..😅
These falls are beautiful and the hike to get there is around 40 mins from the parking area. It was very sad to see that tourists and tourist operators did not seem to care enough about protecting the environment as plastic bottles were visible throughout the hike and at the bottom of the water fall. Locals overseeing the falls were instead very good at charging the entrance fee but not eager enough to tell people not to throw the trash away during the hike ( they only clean once a week, on Mondays, which is clearly not enough). Tourists should be more mindful and keep their trash until they are back from the trail where they can put it away. I took a picture of all the bottles my group picked up on our way back from the water fall.Unfortunately we ran out of hands and space in our bags to pick them all up so if you want to do the extra mile, bring your bag and collect them too: we only have one planet Earth!
Nice waterfall but...Even though we came with our licensed guide the entrace guys forced us to take an extra guide from the village which for sure charges extra (after 10.000TZN entrance fee). The guy did not even speak english, very bad performance and we felt once more like tourism here is just to get as much money as possible from the white cash cows. Great!
The waterfalls is very beautiful. You Should Be Here
You need to pay money to the government while receiving nothing in return. No signs to the waterfall, nothing. You are also forced into hiring a guide even if you dont want to. It is not needed, so easy to find it by yourself. The waterfall itself is very nice and beautiful. Unfortunately very poorly managed and the local people have only one goal: extract as much money out of every Mzungu as possible.
I been here so many times this place is so wonderful
Good place to see sunset and coffee Experience
Amazing experience. Book with Twanga touring for a good price and a guide who speaks English well. We decided to go up to the village where the hike starts by public transport and that was a fun experience in of itself. The guide met is in Moshi to accompany us. He gave us a coffee roasting experience and good local food was included. 5 stars!
Very beautful walk to the waterfall. The waterfall was amazing. You can take a dip.
Truly amazing place and environment!
the place is beautiful, of course, but Id like to write about experience of going there on your own. its doable, but involve a bit of a hassle, even if its close to Moshi. cheapest way is to grab a dala dala described with MOSHI - URU - MRUWIA til the end of the route & from there walk a bit to the main waterfall "office". bajaj or boda boda are more convenient option, but the former will have some hard time to go all the way up, as the road is rather bumpy. both options can be negotiated down to ~ 20.000 TZS with waiting time, but its better to be precise about how long will it last (up to 3-4 hours if one plan to visit both waterfall & home-made coffee workshop).now - once in the waterfall "office" you have to pay a fee of 10.000 TZS per person + obligatory guide - another 10.000 TZS. seems like this obligatory status has been made up by local youngsters, who are making living out of it. its hard to discuss whether its a scam or some entreprenous community action, but its not a matter of contemplation - if you wont take a guide, they wont let you in. it seems like the only space for negotiation is to lower this fee, while traveling in bigger group.visiting home-made coffee workshop (lets not call it "plantation"is another 5000 TZS per pax, which is fair enough. it consists of watching the process and sipping a freshly brewed cuppa. of course, selling overpriced coffee packs, roasted by a local aunt is something you cant avoid in the end.to sum up, what youre paying independently is only a fraction of organised tours in the area, which are priced between 40 and 100 (sic!USD. going solo, extra adventure is free :)
Best waterfalls around there. Definitely go there if you have time
It is amazing place, for those who love coffee, you get a chance to prepare from the scratch up to the real organic coffee #localbarista
The waterfalls are amazing but again , almost like everywhere else in the country - the people there will try to screw you up and make you pay for a guide you don’t want or need. Be aware.
Stunning!
very green and cool place to hiking in materuni village after organic coffee tour, very friendly people and a good place to exprience the real life of chagga people in kilimanjaro
Loved the experience ❤️. Its not so far from when the buses stop but for a better experience ensure that you are wearing comfortable shoes.
Nice place for adventure and site seeing , awesome waterfall
Beautiful walk to the waterfall. It might be slippery during rain so wear good shoes/boots.
Nice tall waterfall but getting pricey. Its 10,000tsh for the entry fee but theyre charging double now for the guide they oblige you to take, although if you insist you might be able to go by yourself (its not complicated, just use a proper map). You can get to the village by dalla-dalla from Moshi (1000tsh). Its actually much cheaper than companies want to charge you for (about 50$).
Wonderful scenary of the materuni falls
Beautiful hike. Very magical waterfall
Amazing waterfall!!! Possibly the best day of my year. Swimming in the icy cold water from the glaciers of Kilimanjaro - bloody freezing - but what a rush. I would definitely do it again.
Situated in the small village of Materuni the falls are a short distance from the bus stop and you have to pay the locals for entrance to the waterfalls. The hike there is worth it and you can have the beat views from the bottom and if the water is not too cold you can enjoy a swim
Took a group from work for a tour at the Waterfalls on Sunday morning. The weather was pretty good. There is a about 6 km walk from where we left the car. We started with a coffee tour and then the falls. We used local guides.
Be in the natural around mount Kilimanjaro Tanzania. Moshi town. Day trip to materuni waterfalls. #anuari_tours_guide_tanzania.
A wonderful waterfall near mount Kilimanjaro.
Incredible day at materuni waterfall. Named after the local tribe of the area. Absolutely get a guide as it is inexpensive and they enhance the experience. After the waterfall have your guide take you to coffee plantation and local bar. The people there are the nicest you will ever meet. You are immediately treated like family and have inexpensive gifts you can buy to remember the trip. Try banana wine!! "Zeek" was my guide a nickname.
Quite long way in mountains from parking - and you can see this flow of energy.
Materuni waterfalls Is one of the longest falls within Kilimanjaro area. Its located few kilometers from Moshi town . Slight hike through some homesteads and coffee plantations will lead you there. Its advisable to take guide with you from the entrance . Also combine it with a coffee tour and taste some banana wine :)
An incredible place that is a must see when in Kilimanjaro Region. The hike to the waterfalls is not so challenging but on a rainy day can get quite slippery so watch out and walk on the grass instead of the muddy road. Get a local guide to take you there as you might easily get lost in one of the several diverging paths. The waterfall itself is magniticent! Extremely powerful and makes you feel so tiny, exhilerated and humbled all at the same time. You can swim there but at your own risk as it doesnt have such a huge basin like Udzungwa for instance. Its also a great place for a photoshoot.
This place is amazingThe sound of the waterfall and the water flowing in the streams below. The view is amazingIts very quietEspecially when theres no people around
Unbelievable beauty nature. You will drop down to the bottom to see one of the wonderful places. Its an adventure for young people. A bit challenge for old people they can manage. Down you will see a very beautiful view for the waterfalls. When you pass front of waterfalls you will feel very cold because water coming from the ice on the top of Kilimanjaro mountain. The place is great also for a group journey.
Materuni waterfall is found within Moshi area. This very impressive Waterfall is one of the tallest in the area, spewing crystal clear glacier water 70m into its basin. The beautiful path leading to Materuni Waterfall is located 2500m above sea level.
Awesome waterfall but be extremely aware of local "guides". They may leave you stranded. Arrange the trip beforehand and pay afterwards. Such a great place ruined by corruption
Such a great place to visit with family or couples. Escape for holidays
