Marinid Tombs - Tourist attraction in Taza, Morocco
The Tombs can be reached from the plato near the Borj Nord. The location is very popular among the locals. You can reach it by a car or take a walk. The hill is not so high and the tour is very pleasant. To reach the city, it is also possible via the cemetery.
Nice place to visit and apparently not very popular during the day. There were only a handful of people. The view is amazing. Its maybe a 30 min walk from the MedinaAnd even if it is not the most pleasant walk along the road, I think it is well worth the effort as you will get different views on Fez and the surrounding. There is also an alternative off-track path which is not on any map. There was no harassment or begging kids along the way however I would probably not recommend to walk it alone during the night.
Worth the hike: hardly any tourists and the view from up high is fantastic!
Nice overview over the old Medina
Beautiful view across the whole city from this location. The ruins themselves are very interesting too. It is recommended to take a taxi to the top, the hike was quite long and exhausting. It was also very hard to find the right path to the top.
Place is like abandoned. Its nice to see because of the view to Fes.
Really cool place to see the sunset
Good place to visit but its dirty and not equipped at all.
Old city views
Great viewpoint close medina, perfect for a sunset picnic.
Cool spot, nice to follow the sunset from here. The only issue is getting there (through the cementeryand the begging/selling kids who wont leave you alone
Everyone loves a little mystery, and that is exactly what you will get when you visit the enigmatic ruins of theMerenid Tombs (also known asMarinid Tombs). Located on a hill just above the bustling city of Fez, there is very little that is actually known about these tombs besides the fact that they were built in the 14th century. The time period suggests that these were built during the Merenid dynasty, but it is not certain who specifically was buried there and why. All of this mystery only entices us even more, and the tombs are one of the most visited sites in Fez. The spectacular panoramic views of the city and mountains may also have a little something to do with it.
Your sunset spot. View over the old medina. A bit isolated location (although with plenty of people), so bring a bottle of water. Be aware of children asking for money or for your personal objects (scarf, hair acessories).
Lovely view of the city from a great elevated position.Downside, the place, as a lot of its surroundings was covered in garbage
Lovely place, if you are in Fes you should definetely vist this place. It has a view on the entire city and the sunset/sunrise experience is the best in Fes.Bonus: Bring Binoculars if you have them + timelapse the sunset.
Too high thus place, so nice views to city.
Went on 2018 p here , took my gears and shot some great photos , visits are free , you can spend day camping there , feeling the culture and the harmony of this exotic city , you also can view the whole city from this spot , the view at night is amazing with shining city light , this old tombs outstanding in top of the hill , landscape photography here is worth it , enjoy your visit , contact me if you have any question how to go or directionbest regardsNassim
Worth the climb to have a nice view of Fes Medina
Beautiful location with panoramic views of the city
While the tombs are nothing spectacular, because they are not in the best shape, the best part of taking the walk up the small hill here are the views overlooking Fes. The hill is very popular with locals and the best time to visit is during sunset period from from blue gate it is about a 20 minute walk down the main road and just look for the steps that lead up to the top of the hill.
Graves of the Marinids, there was a palace previously but now only some ruins. Actually you can see all Fes medina from the top. If you dont have too much time in Fes it is not on your list. There is nothing to see or visit. If you have enough time you can visit sometime for see the panoramic view of the Fes.
Beautiful hill top panoramic city view with the historical of ruins that was built in 14 century.
This place is called the Graves of the Marinids, and it is one of the public places open to everyone, overlooking the ancient city, which makes it an attractive sight.
Definitely recommend a visit to the tombs. The views are amazing. Make sure to bring a blanket or cushion and enjoy the views! The taxi driver should take you to the top , if not it is a relatively simple walk.
Great view over city, tombs nothing special...
Lovely view of the city from top with mountains in the background.
The tombs are not very well kept but does provide a great view of Fez. If your accomodation has a rooftop view, you can give it a miss. Taxis are hard to find here so either ask them to wait or get a driver and include it in a guided tour.
Easy enough to walk up to (and found a shortcut down the side of the hill which made it easier to get back to townbut not much else to see once there. Worth the walk for the view though.
Nice ruins. Slightly disappointed by the fact that people can drive up and park in between them. You’d hope people would park outside the ruins and walk for 1 minute to see them without cars in the way.
This is an excellent location to see the city. Skip the tour bus and take the pathway through the cemetery from the Bab Guissa gate entrance to the Medina. Takes about 15 minutes along this pathway. Also dont expect much from the ruins, the locals use it as a pit stop for their mules... 🤮
I enjoyed the tombs, but more so enjoyed the view of the city. It was about a 20 min walk from the blue gate.
Went up there right before sunset during Ramadan, I was not expecting much about this place but turned out to be such wonderful experience, day light going down and fresh wind blowing refreshing you and taking you in very deep thoughts. Then you can hear prays to break Ramadan fasting and see locals setting up tables to have their first meal of the day
Old tombs - spiritual place.Stunning view from top of the hill onto Medina el BaliOne of must be places to see how big Fez is and enjoy the panorama. No shops etc in the area. Dont expect coffee shop etc.
It is a quiet place filled with ruins. You can get a great panoramic view of medina but beside this is not that special.
The site has some really interesting ruins but there is no indication of what they are from, who built them, etc. There is nothing. The site is also littered with a lot of trash and stray dogs and goats. The tombs or small caverns are also unlabeled and filled with garbage. It is very sad.
Highly recommend taking the hike up here. Theres a nice walking path on the west side that we didnt realize until our way down because we came up through the cemetery. It gives a nice view of Fes and is interesting to see!
The ruins are worth visiting. As well as the interesting architecture of the tombs you will get a very scenic view of the whole of Fez, city and countryside. The fresh air and open space with little other people around is a good contrast from the hustle & bustle of the town. You can easily drive and park here if you have your own car, otherwise a taxi can take you there. Walking from old Fez is possible but can be tiring. Itll take around 15-20 minutes to enjoy the place.
Nothing to really "explore" here, but great vantage point for a panoramic view of the downtown Fes Medina. You can just have your taxi driver drop you off at the small parking area, have the taxi wait for a few mins while you take some pics, and jump back into the taxi. Most people say that sunset is the best time to go, which is when we went and the views were beautiful. The area itself is not so amazing - as its got plenty of garbage etc., but if you are clever with your pics you can shoot around that.
Visiting the Marinid Tombs its a worthwhile half-day excursion that will really only take you a few hours. I recommend checking it out in the early morning while visiting Fes El Bali. The small hike up a moderately steep hill is rewarded with breathtaking views of the Médina.
There is not much left of this ancient Tombe, and there are no signs providing you with information. Then again most places in Fez either require a travel guide or a local guide for detailed/accurate information. But the view from here on the old medina and its surrounding areas is terrific, especially with sunrise (in the afternoon the sun is in the wrong positions to take photos of the surrounding areas). All in all, quite the walk to get there, but worth it
This is the place for sunrises and sunsets as the sun passes directly over Fes from east to west. My preference though, because this place gets so busy, is to cross the road that runs below and to climb the walls of an ancient wall that isn’t on the maps. The view is better as well as sheep and horses being kept in the enclosure - wondrous
Great view. Goats and sheep eating nearby. There are a couple food vendors up there around sunset.Unfortunatly there is a lot of garbage everywhere
A great view on Fes. We were just disappointed cause this important has not maintenance and it seems not safe.
Great viewpoint of the city, easy to reach by taxi, very quiet in the morning. It’s a nice retreat from the scammers in the Médina, but just like the rest of Morocco, it’s covered with trash and not well maintained.
Old tombs on the middle of nowhere. Even though it is just a 20m walk from the blue gate I would strongly recommend taking a taxi, because you would walk into some suspicious and creepy areas. The area is full of trash and there is no information about the place once you are there. It is actually quite sad to see such a beautiful piece of history getting worse each day and nobody caring. You can see the entire city of Fes from it.It could be a 5 star attraction if the government took care of it.
Its a very nice place to get rid of annoying salesmen in the medina. You will get absolute calm even under high temperature in Fes. The fare is around 15-20dh by taxi from Tannery. In Fes, Taxi is usually charged by meter, so just double confirm it with the driver before you get in. But most of the taxi driver don’t know English. It is better for you to show the destination on Google Map. And before you go there, you should prepare enough waters because there are no store.
Great views of the city with some old ruins
Lovely viewpoint over the city - walkable from town (although its a highway so a bit awkward). Ruins themselves are limited.
Worth a trip for the view on the city and the hills around. Possible to reach both by taxi and by walking. Nice during sundown / evening prayer
Not too far a walk out of the city with incredible views. You can see all of the old town and surrounds.
