Rue de Maredsous 11, 5537 Denée, Belgium, Charleroi
A working Gothic-style Benedictine monastery built in the 19th century offering tours & retreats.
Very good place for a day trip.
Love this place! Food is amazing
Very large abbey, 150 years old.
There is nothing to do there.. only a big cafeteria with many people. The abbey is not that interesting…
Truly historical place! Book a visit with guide and enjoy after the beer and cheese on outside tables and playground for kids
Very friendly place, especially for family. Free playground and toilet = perfect.
Beautiful and massive abbey. The church is marvelous, and if you’re lucky enough you can hear the monks sing in the crypt. There is also a restaurant to try Maredsous’ beer and cheese. This is a MUST-SEE in the region, which is by the way full of beautiful landscapes.
Beautiful, calm. Would have loved some little cards with explanation on it, with the history and all. But honestly its fine. It was a rainy day but still enjoyed it. Would have liked to walk in the surroundings. Will come back later to do that!
We visited the abbey on a sunny January Sunday. The place is beautiful, but was extremely crowded. We also went into their shop to buy some beer and cheese. They are very delicious, but really expensive. Nevertheless, the place is worth a visit
The magnificent cathedral church in ancient times was built by a very rich German family.. it is very spacious. The shape of the building is also very luxurious and the architecture is beautiful. Its architecture was built in 20 years.. but now it is no longer used.. only just for visiting tourism..maredsous abbaye produces delicious cheese and the best beer in Belgium...Ive tried the product...its really good taste
Good place to visit. Me and a friend rode our bikes from Philippville (where I lived as the only American in a totally French-speaking village, while working in nearby Florennes). We were just a little wobbly on the ride back after visiting their bistro...
Amazing Abbey where you can explore history for first and then you can enjoy an excellent Belgian beer in the bistrot nearby, ideal to visit in a hot summer day. The area around the Abbey is an ideal place for cycling. Ive been there several times, too bad the I last visited it it was closed due to Covid restrictions ... it will be for another time for sure.
historical and very attractive place. I like it
The place overall is well organized , restaurant is really great, the Abbey is not so impressive and the cheese tour didn’t offer much about the cheese, rather the history of the place. Also the tour was only in Dutch and French.
Not very impressive abbey, far too recently build to be called historical. Built in neogothic style. The interior of the church is the only publicly accessible area, which is very sparsely decorated. Not really worth a visit, unless you want to buy cheese or beer.
Best abbey beer in Namur; you have to go!! 🍻⛪️
Very impressive Abbey, with majestic buildings and an equally beautiful church. The admission is free and there is a big parking lot. Do not miss the info center, from where you can take a guided tour.
Pretty building with interesting history but the only two zones that are accessible to the public are the church and the visitors centre. Outside of Covid regulations, one can take guided tours of the area, including another monastery about a kilometer away.It would be harsh to say it was disappointing but it was not really that different from any other abbey and the beer they brew there (named after the abbeyis available from most supermarkets.Their cheese and liqueurs are very good, however, and well worth the price we paid.
Beautiful and impressive abbey with a shop in a side building where you can buy e.g. Cheese and beer produced here next to some artisanal local products and the typical religious souvenirs.
Lovely place for some extraordinary beer. Had the extra, and then bought the rest per bottle.
Did a very nice 20k cycle ride up to the Abbey from Dinant. Beers were absolutely great. Service was way too slow and prices a bit on the high end. Nevertheless, amazing experience. Highly recommended.
Beautiful peaceful location, very nice shop with local bread, beer, liquor, accessories, candles, perfume, books and so on. There’s also a large cafe next door.
Wonderful nature and architecture. There is also place where you can eat & drink.
Very nice architecture and good accomodations, but make sure to book a visit because otherwise youre missing the nice stuff
Great place to have a short day trip. There is a play ground for kids as well. Inside there is a mini restaurant, you can buy drinks and food. There are many bicycle routes that goes to there for biking lovers.
Very nice place, not far from Dinant, to visit in the Ardennes. You can find the famous products (beer, cheese, breadfrom the Maredsous abbey, although it is no longer produced there. But definitely worth a visit, also with children, there is a large playground.
clean environment, nice free parking....great walks. Nice well maintained building. Artisanal shops. Good cheese and beer from abbey.
Beautiful place, interesting history and walk around. Lovely food and beer. No entrance charge and no parking charge. Nice play area for children, again free. A lovely day out.
Beautiful and quiet place. I went there and slept there for 4 days. It was amazing. In fact, if you want to ressource yourself you can stay at the Hotellerie and eat with the monk. You will meet amazing people, enjoy nature and God. For me it was one of the best time I had in my life. Intellectually and spiritually.
If you think you can see the brewery or the cheese factory, you are going to get disappointed... almost everything is closed for public except for the church, the restaurant and off course the gift shop. If you are nearby, the architecture is worth the visit, but this place is certainly not worth a big detour...
Great recent abbey to visit. Yes a pretty young abbey in comparison to the others. Take time to buy a guided visit tour. Worth it. Very knowledgeable guide explaining the how and why the construction of this abbey
Very interesting historical place.
What a nice discovery, the Belgian country side. The abbey is amazing, lets of space for children. The surrounding villages cute and well kept. Great possibility for cycling on the ravel
30min drive from Dinant. It’s got a visitor area with ice-cream, 4 kinds beer, only two kinds of the cheese on display are from here. Bread and sausages also available. Bit of a tourist trap. The church is surprisingly active and with karaoke display, lots of activities.
A group of us cycled from Dinant to the Abbey and stopped over for lunch. We had an excellent lunch and small beer or two. Had to be careful given that we were on the bike again. It is a very spiritual place full of contentment.
Historical place to visit. Here you can try some Belgian specialities (Maredsous beers and cheese). Since it’s in the middle of nature, it’s also nice to have a walk around inside de forest.
This is one of the best Abbeys in Belgium in terms of historical preservation. The tour was full of great information and the food and beer were excellent.
Went there without any expectations. There is the visit of the church, which is ok. The abbey itself is off-limits for tourists. There is also the touristic center, where you can buy some commercial stuff, like beer and cheese, which you can also buy in most supermarkets. Or get a meal or a drink, and enjoy it on the big terrace outside. There is also a small playground for the kids. Without any guided tour, calculate about 1 to 2 hours for a visit.
A very peaceful place, nestled in the Molignée valley. The monastery is beautiful. Even though you cannot visit the monastery (except with a tour), you can visit their restaurant with good stuff produced here. A ten-minute walk would take you to the neighboring Maredret Abbey.
Benedictine monastery, known also for cheese and beer own production.
So nice to visit. Good food and beer. Free parking. Big terras. But when it is a stormy weather...you must watch out for the trees on the road😉😉
Lovely place to visit, good beer and spirits
Beautiful grounds and lots of good food and beer options. You can freely visit the church but to see the main Abbey you must join a tour.
Loved it!They have the Maredsous Extra beer, which you can only get at the Abbey, super tasty!Good lunch, big portions and good price, and they make their own bread which was delicious
we planned to go here the day after we arrived from the USA. I made reservations via email for our party of 4. Upon arrival, we were taken to a table... with a bowl of chips. Finally got to order beer, and only ours came in stoneware mugs. Everyone around us had beautiful glasses. It came to be over an hour later, only chips and beer. This was advertised as a moule and frites dinner. No one brought food. We paid our bar tab and found out that they had charged us $25 per person for dinner (we expected thatbut never brought us any food. We got a refund for that. Very disappointed to start off our 20th anniversary trip this way.
Very beautiful just to bad it turned in to a business and you can not find the real spirit of the monastery anymore. Prices are not cheaper then in local stores so why rush and but there. Just try to enjoy the history and forget the business...
I stayed 4 days in the Abbey, and it was the most precious time of my life! Time to find myself, to stay away from the consumer/outside world. Just some time to meditate, pray, walk, draw etc... It is a place of great power and peace.
we unfortunately couldn’t visit the abbey when we stopped by, which was a shame. but it’s a wonderful place to stop by if you’re in the area.
while their beer may be good it is more expensive here than a bar or food store. the breads and cheeses are more expensive here than at the food store. this is kind of a tourist trap. you can see from the receipt the cost of a pizza, soda and two coffees.
Good place for tasting the beers and cheeses made by the monks. The visit inside the abbey is not recommended if you think you are going to see their brewery. Only how monks live. Visits are not in English.
