Hearty dining in a splashy steakhouse and bar with exposed concrete walls and leather banquettes.
Marble and Grain in Canberra
Description
Privilege
Top-notch food, excellent attentive, friendly service and atmosphere. Steak was, and continues to be cooked exactly how I like it every time Ive visited. Consistency is key. Worth the price you pay.
MoreThis place is amazing. They know how to cook steak & cook it well.We were in Canberra for our anniversary & wanted to dine out at some fancy restaurants for dinner. Our Friday night meal was a disaster (please see my review of that restaurant). This meal was exactly what a steak should be. The presentation. The size of the meals & the ambience of the restaurant ticked all the boxes. We will definitely be back here when in Canberra next time.Thank you for a pleasant dining experience.
MoreIt is a dark restaurant, Our waitress was a little unsure as it was her first day but she was great. The oysters killpatrick the sauce was a little to thick, rich, and over powering. My husband ordered a dozen natural oysters but he got 6 with a sweet, sour kind of sauce on them. He did like them but it just wasnt what he had ordered. I ordered the slow roasted beef cheeks they were delicious. And the brussel sprouts were amazing. My husband was a little disappointed with his steak as it was quiet chewy compared to other steak restaurants we have been to. The dessert was a major let down. The panacotta wasvery different. The creme brulee had a very unpleasant taste. We drank a coke each and sparkling water. Our bill came to $250+ which I thought was a little high for the amount and overall quality. We really wanted to try this restaurant but I dont think we would go back.
MoreThe bone marrow was the highlight, absolutely perfect! The steaks were both sadly over cooked (we ordered rare; was medium). Service was great
MoreNoice, tasty and thoroughly enjoyable
A few colleagues and I went here for dinner on Monday night. Food was quite expensive but serving sizes were pretty decent. I had the baby back pork ribs which had quite a hot glaze that wasn’t mentioned in the menu. Made eating them a bit of a challenge. A finger bowl for those served ribs would be handy. Sides were tasty and drink prices fair. Overall, would recommend
MoreI had high expectations of their steak and it didnt disappoint, was perfectly cooked. Lots of gluten free options (and even coeliac friendly chips!). Overall a great night of excellent food and excellent service.
MoreWhat a disappointment. Booking made for four people for a birthday celebration, $200 security deposit required for a Tuesday evening to confirm reservation. Arrived and taken to our reserved table which had only 3 place settings. Asked if we would like water to which we asked for still and sparkling. Two glasses filled with still and that was it for the next 30 minutes. After asking again for sparkling it arrived 10 minutes later. Said we would like to order our food and drinks and the waiter just left us and tended to another table. It was 50 minutes in the restaurant before they took our drinks and food order and an hour and 15 minutes in before we received our entree....then 10 minutes later our drinks, but still missing one. Asked again for the missing drink....nothing came....main course arrived and again asked for the missing drink which eventually arrived half way through eating our mains. Steak tasting board was cooked well but the two individual steak orders were not medium-rare but rather well-done. Offered dessert which we declined, there was no way we were waiting another hour and a half for that. Over $300 spent on a meal that was not cooked to order and service that was nothing short of appalling. Asked on departure how everything was to which I explained all the above and was met with a "Oh sorry bout that (as the eftpos was shoved our way), if you come back again just let us know if your steak isnt to your liking"....ahhh were good, wont be back and wont be recommending.
MoreExquisite variety of foods, service very friendly and professional, the Spa suite accomodation upstairs was one of the best we have stayed in. 👌 Had the most amazing birthday! The luxuries were worth the money! Thankyou to all the staff for an outstanding stay 🙏💫💫💫💫💫
MoreReally disappointed with the quality and taste of the food, after trying meat and wine co we thought we would give marble and grain a go after having really good food at meat and wine co walking out extremely satisfied, we went to marble and grain tonight and ordered quite similar dishes only to get small servings, under seasoned steak and entree, grainy texture on the ribs sauce and funky sides… would have been happy with chips and salad. The mushroom sauce was good. Also ordered oysters and they weren’t shucked properly having shell inside them. Really poor experience overall.Won’t be visiting again anytime soon.
MoreAwesome breakfast. Really enjoyed. They had scrambled eggs, mushrooms (very yummy), bacon, roasted potatoes, roasted tomatoes, orange and apple juice. Very tasty collection of pasteries at the end. Overall enjoyed their breakfast.
MoreWent there for table a dinner. There is no table available okay thats fair cuz I didnt book. Just came for a one night Quick trip. Asked to be seated in bar section. Not walking me to table okayy alright… Didnt provide any service. No asking water or sparkling water?? Need to walk and see the menu at the bar and ordered there. Like a normal pub but the price of foods and ambiance are pretty high up there. After ordered a steak, the order taker gave me cutleries with knife by giving a sharp side to me without any warning. After I had the food, to be honest it was great. But again with this service just mehhhhhh. I regret went there instead of their competitors. At the end the staff came and ask very simple “u done?” and take my plate. Not even ask for the food is it alright or anything. Terrible terrible…… i worked in hospitality for 4 years with this experience I just cant stand it.
MoreFantastic food and wonderful service. We were a group of 8 celebrating 2 Birthdays. Arthur took good care of us. Gave us helpful recommendations for the food and even remembered my kid name throughout the service. Made her feel special ☺️ The steaks were cooked perfectly and were very juicy. We ordered a variety but the star for me was the Pork Tomahawk. Definitely going again.
MoreGreat food, great ambience, perfect portion sizes. We had a birthday celebration, a party of 8, so we had a variety of food. Everything was perfectly prepared. Steaks just the way we wanted them, oysters, prawns, lamb, veggie dishes... Yum! We were taken care of by Arthur, who ensured everything was just right. Arthur helped us by recommending and guiding our selections, and checked-in the right amount of times. Thank you chef, team and Arthur for the memorable evening. Cheers.
MoreI liked the soft lighting, and the setting was pretty good. Food was ok, service was amateurish. The new waiter wasnt supported by his peers, so it was all a bit awkward. Also, they dont split bills which was painful for our group.
MoreGreat atmosphere and diverse selection of meals. Pity the weeknight night we were there the service for food and drinks was slow, low kitchen staff numbers? Otherwise nothing else to fault.
MoreUnfortunately I walked out very disappointed tonight.Rib Eye was way undercooked, chewy and needed a chainsaw to cut it, entree was not bad and others at the table seem to be happy with their meal. (Happy not raving about how good it was). I guess what disappointed me the most was when they asked how your meal was, and then u give them polite constructive criticism, they didn’t seem to care. I wouldn’t return after this.
MoreA vibrant restaurant and bar with excellent food and brilliant service team anytime of the day! The meals I had were tasty and filling. The bar is beautifully stocked with a good range of beverages. I was fortunate to try some special dishes, Spiced Lamb Rump that was amazing, however the dessert Watalappan was a true feast of the senses, crafted in such a way that texture and tastes was a sensation (highly recommended)!
MoreAlways amazing service and quality meals. The steaks are amazing would thoroughly recommend if you are looking for a great meal while sho in camera also a great for groups and they have a well stocked bar
MoreAmong 4 of us, we shared the 2 tasting boards, crispy baby calamari, Arancini balls and 2 deserts. We were stuffed with medium rare steaks full of flavour, lamb that didn’t need any sausage to enhance the taste and a feeling that we’ve had a sampler of everything on the menu. A must try!!
MoreThis place was so disappointing. The worst service I have had in Australia. It’s the little things that make a restaurant great. Like the waiter refilling your wine, him talking to you like a customer and not being rude to you and your guests, him not blatantly hitting on your guests. The food was okay, but not so amazing to support such poorly trained waitstaff. They even looked disheveled and like they wanted to be else where. My suggestion is meat and wine co or black fire. Give this one a miss.
MoreLamb tomahawk was nice but after you worked through the fat and sinew it ended up with what looked like a singe cutlet …expected way more for $49. The $38 pork tomahawk look big but upon closer look it just a thick layer of fat. The $42 beef cheek was soft but lacked seasoning and very greasy, which was unpleasant after dish cools down the oil started to solidify. Overall, 2/5 as severely lacking on any value for money. It’s saving grace was the wait staff who were very nice and attentive (although we were at the bar section)
MoreNot particularly welcoming or friendly staff for todays service.Food was good but I feel it’s not as good as it was pre-covid. Bit disappointed because it’s usually super tasty. Food portions relative to price has improved.
MoreA classy establishment with a great menu, catering well for coeliacs too.
Was definitely not what I was expecting coming from WA. I was expecting to have a Rockpool equivalent meal or getting to that standard. The service especially at first wasnt up to par for the cost of the meals, it did get better but they say that first impressions count. The pork ribs were awful, underdone, ribs and meat and bones nearly all impossible to separate without flying off your seat after finally tearing them apart. Sauce was a tad on the thin side for my liking too.The fries were the worst part of the experience by far sadly. WAY TOO MUCH SALT!!! Someone watching their salt intake could end up in hospital due to the excess amounts of salt on the fries, nearly inedible. The sparkling water wasnt chilled enough either, cold but not icey cold.
MoreFor the price I paid, I would have expected a thicker steak. The scotch fillet was cooked well but not a great cut of beef. We sat in the bar area and were not overwhelmed with the service either. Ill think we will try other steak options next time.
MoreI expected the food to be good particularly the grilled menu but it was not great. The meat is so fatty. The price is not worth. But I will compliment side the sauce and the mushroom which is good.Customer service, so happy with girl in the bar section that shes so nice.Facility and ambient is good.
MoreAbsolutely fantastic, l took the wife here for her birthday, We all had an amazing night. The food was delicious and the drinks even better. The staff were amazing and were always there to top up drinks.Couldnt knock the whole experience to be honest and will definitely go back.
MoreEasily a Top 5 steak place in Canberra! The inside dining area is lush! The entrees are superb. As are the sides. As are the drinks and the desserts. The Old Fashioned cocktail I had was top notch. But its the steak that is most supreme here. I had the 300g Scotch Fillet with mushroom porcini cream sauce. Cooked to medium rare perfection. The side fries were the best ever – cooked in duck fat were they? Service is friendly and accommodating. Five stars, easily! *****
MoreThis review is based upon being seated in the bar section and not the restaurant section. The order consisted of two steaks, one sirloin ordered medium and the other a Scotch fillet medium rare. The sirloin was delivered perfectly, well seasoned and it was HUGE.Sadly the Scotch fillet was more on the medium side - perhaps it rested under the heat lamp a little too long whilst awaiting the sirloin. Despite this, it was HUGE, perfectly seasoned and was inhaled.Sides, lets not forget the sides... These are also HUGE and would definitely suggest sharing one between two.The steaks were washed down with a great selection of beers and wines.Definitely not a cheap place to eat, but definitely worth it for a lovely feed and drink.I would give M&G 4.5 stars but cant due to Google limitations, so Im forced to take a whole star off purely for the the over cooked steak. Despite this Ill be back to try the "Rib Eye bone in".
MoreGreat experience.I went the scallops a and my partner calamari for entree. Both perfectly cooked and full of flavours.Went scotch fillet steaks for mains with garlic prawn sauce. AmazingTreat yourselves for a serving of rustic fries!Would have had dessert but were well and truly full after ample serves of the aboveService was also great. Only shortcoming is that they ran out of oysters !
MoreWas taken here for my birthday, the food was amazing, great place to celebrate.
A solo trip to Canberra and I decided to treat myself to some dinners out alone. First stop here - and it was delightful.Nice ambiance - not at all too loud and very attentive servers. My first course was the wagyu carpaccio - that course brings the average down to 4 stars. The accompanying items on the carpaccio were wonderful: figs, truffle honey, rocket, Parmesan - yum! However the carpaccio itself was a little stringy in parts - with tough fat chunks which spoiled the overall flavour.Nevermind onto the next course: the Murray Cod (goodbut the sides were great. I strongly recommend the cauliflower Mac and cheese. Amazing. Add the mash and the only downside was I couldn’t finish them! They’re the perfect size to share however.I will definitely add this to the list of restaurants to revisit on any trip back to Canberra.
MoreI really like this restaurant. We could not find a table on the restaurant side, fully booked till 8:30pm so we sat on the café side. The food is still very nice. We tried the duck pate, beef capaccio, steak, beef cheek and murray cod. All top notch and tasty. Will come back again next time I am in Canberra
MoreI made the mistake of assuming that I would not need reservations for one person on a Saturday night in Canberra. Marble and Grain was full in the dining room but they have a great bar area with lots of tables. The staff was efficient and quick, ordered at the bar and got a steak and a calamari appetizer in about 20 minutes. Both the calamari and the steak 🥩 were very tasty but outside of garnish did not come with any sides such as a salad or vegetables. Great restaurant but gave 4 stars due to the relatively high prices for the small portions. Everything else was great though.
MoreHad an enjoyable meal myself. Scotch fillet, b medium rare. Cauliflower mac n cheese and the potatoes. My steak and my sisters, were cooked to perfection. My brother in law however, had the rib eye, bone in. It was more like medium well.I feel like for $64 for that steak, it would be prudent for the servers to ask for the meat to be checked before leaving the table. Some of us eat the sides 1st after all.An apology was given, as was the offer of another steak. But by then the waiting would have been too long, and the steak was eaten regardless. No reduction of meal cost offered. Interesting. Ive not had that happen before.Aside from that, an overall pleasant night.
MoreDinner at the Marble and Grain for the Saturday 8:00 pm setting, Feb 2022.Seating was on time and despite the restaurant being at capacity, the service was good. The food, however, was spectacular. We chose the Local Lamb Tasting Board, and added a Roasted Bone Marrow. The meal was so succulent, I found myself dreaming about it for days. Will be back to try the Steak Tasting Board at the first opportunity.- Book early. They take a deposit to ensure you turn up. Booking is fair and easy.- Try the later sitting to allow plenty of time to enjoy.- Use the Hotel parking from 80 Northbourne Ave. Much easier/cheaper than finding a park on the Braddon side. The lift takes you to the restaurant.- Go the Tasting Boards, no regrets.- Bone Marrow = Pure Buttery Bliss. My only regret was not ordering two.
MoreDelicious food, great cocktail, lovely service, comfy seating & nice ambient atmosphere 🤩Ordered the steak platter with bone marrow, chips & watercress salad. Steak was so well cooked (actually medium rare). Salad was crisp & refreshing with a tangy dressing & marrow was melt-in-your-mouth but with a little caramelised smoke edge 🤤.Also got the arancini with hint of truffle mixed with mushroom & cheesy goodness 😍. Plus sides including charred brocolini, fennel & apple salad, brussel sprouts that had crispy pork rind or smth crunchy, and artisan bread with olives, oil & butter. All very delish! 🥰Topped off with sweet fruity Love potion cocktail and watermelon sorbet for dessert....soooo good, would def go for those again 💞Went with a few girlfriends and we could have stayed all night chatting & drinking if we didnt notice the lights go up and that all the other customers had gone already. We werent even rushed out or asked to finish up 👍💖
MoreI’ve been to Marble and Grain a few times over the years and I felt the quality has declined on my most recent visit. The staff were pretty nice and atmosphere lively + classy, but the food quality was not up to standard. The meat tasted a bit “old” as the texture was unpleasant and had a distinct smell. The signature smoked butter and bread still lives up to expectations gladly. Overall an okay option in the Braddon/CBD area for modern Australian cuisine.
MoreExcellent staff, atmosphere, and food. Very accommodating for us as well, with a 10 month old. Limited parking is available in the street outside, metered during the day. A bit on the pricey side, but would still definitely recommend. Social distancing for diners seems to be well considered.
MoreThe dark, romantic, yet powerful atmosphere is the perfect setting for a romantic dinner or a quiet night out.The food is amazing, and presented without flashy clutter. Just delicious, well cooked food.
MoreI love the food here. Steak is great and you can even order bone marrow as an extra for your plate. This restaurant can be pretty busy so its best to book a table in advance if you dont want to risk waiting or being turned away. The restaurant is on one side of the building and the bar is on the other side of the same building, and theres a counter/reception in the middle. Food and drinks can be a bit pricey, so its not somewhere you want to visit daily, but its definitely a good place to visit if you want a nice meal to enjoy when you have enough budget to spend and when you want to pamper yourself and your loved ones. Nice decoration and a pretty chill vibe. Will definitely come back to visit with friends and families. Please keep the high standard and I will return for sure.
MoreRib eye & Scotch Fillet were brilliantly cooked! Had awesome charring plus tender juicy done perfectly inside. Garlic bread was toasted & well-seasoned! Perfect appetizer along with the Beef Wagyu croquettes!Had a fantastic experience in this restaurant! Our server was on top of it too!The one thing I didn’t like about this place was that when we walked in, the lady at the counter turned us away saying that they’re fully booked and they’re only accepting bookings. We were a bit disappointed but she didn’t care much about us and basically told us to go away😅We ended up sitting at the bar, ordering a drink and I checked their booking platform. They actually had lots of tables available. So I don’t know what her problem was, but I booked a seat and was glad we weren’t served by her🤗
MoreThe food here was absolutely delicious and the staff were very very attentive to things like allergies/intolerances. The meat was cooked to perfection. Looking forward to coming back!
MorePopped in on a cold rainy Canberra evening to celebrate a special birthday. On arrival, we were greeted with warm smiles and thankfully showed to a nice cosy spot. Cedric our waiter, was very attentive and helpful. Having perused the menu while enjoying pre dinner drinks, our party of 6 settled on 2 serves of artisanal bread, olives and aioli and 1 serve of garlic bread-delicious! Entrees were overlooked and we went straight to mains. 4 decided on the smoked baby pork ribs, 1 went the lamb rump and 1 for pork belly. We also ordered sides of kipfler potatoes and absolutely delicious Brussels sprouts. The meals arrived in good time and all were generous servings. We all enjoyed our meals and can I say, my husband who never eats Brussels sprouts, actually tried and enjoyed them!!!! No room for dessert. For us, this was a special night out, not cheap but absolutely worth every dollar. Will definitely be back but will not eat lunch beforehand so perhaps I can look at the dessert menu. Thanks for a memorable meal/night Cedric and Marble and Grain.
MoreCame here for dinner last night with my mum and 8 year old. What an experience! Great kid’s menu with simple options. My son had the spaghetti which was delicious! We ordered the meat platter to share with potatoes in duck fat and mashed potatoes... let me tell you this was the most enjoyable experience. The mash was so velvety and smooth. The roast potatoes in duck fat, couldn’t have enough! We also had the salt and pepper calamari which again was cooked to perfection and very fresh. The ambiance was great, the quality of food was amazing. The staff were lovely. I couldn’t fault anything about this place! For dessert we had the cream brûlée and coffees. Everything had a perfect balance of flavours. Thank you Jerry the chef for speaking with us you and your team did a superb job! Will definitely be back when visiting Canberra!
MoreFriendly service with a modern vibe. A wide variety of dishes available, each with flavours that take it up a gear. Can get noisy when full. There is a bar section as well as restaurant section. Located on Mort Street near the intersection of Barry drive, opposite Officeworks.
MoreMarble and Grain is an upmarket steakhouse located just behind Canberra’s restaurant and bar strip. They accept card only which their website doesn’t state and greatly inconvenienced me as I had to spend 30 minutes going to an ATM to deposit cash and then finding parking again. Once arriving for a second time I was told I could not be seated in the restaurant section and could only order from the bar. I ordered a Rib Eye steak with sides which was delicious and cooked to perfection.Although the food was good... the lack of service when paying close to $100 for steak and drinks for 1 doesn’t sit well with me.
MoreMy favourite place for the steaks in Canberra! Amazing! I have been here few times it’s always good. I always get the scotch fillet stake, it’s really juicy and tender. It’s good for special occasions and just dinner as well.
MoreWhy 5 stars? That’s not to say It was the best I’ve ever had, but the whole experience was very good. Genuinely good quality food, fantastic kitchen and open plan, first class fit out, lovely staff, greens cooked perfectly, steaks sliced like butter and perfectly cooked. If anything the steak portions could be a little larger, they’re not small don’t get me wrong but I miss being able to order a 750gr if you want a big feed. The 300gr scotch was delicious, a tad thin is all I could say. Overall I’m surprised to read any poor reviews based on our experience.
