Mandarin Chinese Restaurant - Chinese restaurant in Queenstown, New Zealand
This place is so bad that it automatically makes every resturant youve ever been to or will go to better by comparison, hence the 5 stars. Went here during a music festival weekend with my mates as all other restaurants were packed out. The beers were hot the soup was cold, all the meals were obviously just using stuff from supermarket frozen aisle with a splash of sauce. For some reason they wouldnt get us water for our table. Whole experience was so memorable that we still talk bout it everytime we go out. 1 Star for the food/ service. 5 stars for the memories. Cheers.
I’ll start with the good. These guys were obviously understaffed but did an amazing job getting to every table in a timely manner and seemed to follow up on everything as well. THE REASON I was taking notice of those little things is because when my “double shot” spirit was put on the table I noticed that it was a little light on liquid. Unfortunately (as much as my liver hates itI have a pretty solid eye and taste for single or double so when I questioned it at bill paying time it was revealed that the double shot was in fact double the small side of the jigger aka the 15ml side (they are using the 30/15 split ones - for you hospo staff along for the ride). I can handle mildly unseasoned food or service that may be lacking due to staffing, but blatant ripping off is not ok, an extra $2 (doubles were listed as $12for me I don’t mind, but to charge $10 for 15ml when I’m sure 100% of people would expect 30ml isn’t ok. I hope this is enough for them to make a change because when we tried to explain at the counter it didn’t seem to carry across.
Some of the best Chinese food you can eat in Queenstown! Will be coming back!
Amazing Chinese food, best sweet and sour pork. Super busy and was able to squeeze us in (table of 7which was so nice of them. Owner was really nice as well!
The deer meat was obviously expired, a bit stinky. For those foreigners that go to this restaurant: this is not how Chinese taste like, DO NOT go if you want to get a proper Chinese food! It’s disgusting.
Very quick service nice hot food
Most of the food was bland and not even cooked the traditional way. Honey chicken was just a schnitzel with a sauce that didnt even taste like honey. The only reason I gave 2 stars was the beef noodles were amazing.
Wow, what a surprise!Great view from our window table looking over Lake Wakatipu.Food was amazing.Roast duck, sizzling Lamb in pepper sauce and the combination fried rice was fantastic.Food was tasty and plentiful, and the beer was cold!Well done Guys!
Great food, friendly service, couldnt fault it.
It was okay. The best dish was the lobster noodles followed by the steam fish and mince tofu. Veges were all good too. Fried beef noodles and seafood fried rice was average..bbq pork egg omelette was really salty and bbq pork was very dry. Service was average as it was busy.
I asked for Chongqing chicken. They gave me Kung pao chicken. Sadness prevailed
Fantastic food and even better service.
By far the best food in Queenstown. Great service, excellent food and very good location. We will definitely return here.
Food was really great, service was also good, would recommend the venison and the steamed fish!
The previous reviews have confused me as I really enjoyed the mandarin. The restaurant’s location is beautiful, looking over the serene Wakatipu lake. We walked in and had a very nice meal, the food was cooked well and the owner was such a kind lady! The highlights for me was the scampi, the salt and pepper prawns, the garlic pork ribs and the steamed fish. It sadden me to hear that the business has gotten quite the hit by covid as it deserves all the praise.
Great venue for a BYO, very tasty food, lovely views and very accommodating of a larger group. Thanks very much Anna and team! We will be back :)
Great restaurant! I got the Vegetable fried noodles and it was delicious! Awesome staff and did a good job catering for such a large group! Definitely want to go there again
Great food. Roast Duck, beef hofan, fish Mau soup and yang chow fried rice is our usual order since 2016. The best Asian food in Queenstown.
Couldnt be better
Really good ,I don’t know why just have3.5 star, service good ,and real Hong Kong favor! We order roasted duck and sweet and sour pork ,we loved it.We from Wellington we think this is better than KC Cafe .Nice
Great service, delicious food.
I dont even know where to start, the lack of customers should of been a red flag, I should of listened to my intuition. The worse Chinese food Ive EVER had. Overcooked chicken, nothing was seasoned, but most importantly there was NO love in the cooking. It was horrid
Easily the worst Chinese food youll ever experience in queenstown. I paid $20 for a massive portion of unseasoned rice with a pinch of diced pork the size your smallest fingernail. 5 uncleaned shrimp the size of ants. Dreadful doesnt begin to describe it
food decent, though fried rice very salty. filthy n didnt recieve a dish though got charged for it anyways.
A very good Chinese restaurant, the roasted duck was very juicy and crispy. The service is awesome. On overall highly recommended.
So far, it is the best Chinese restaurant in Queenstown. The sweet and sour pork, long beans veggies.. oh man! My fave. The restaurant is quite spacious so it is good for family gathering. Totally worth it.
Amazing food, amazing service!Definitely will be back.Recommended for everyone!
Really tasty food. Great place. Winton was really friendly and kind. Would definitely go again and recommend to friends. 👍🏻
Amazing find, traditional family style Chinese restaurant over looking Lake Wakatipu!Food was delicious and seafood was very fresh 😋
Food was amazing, the garlic scallop dish we had was especially a must order, but to be honest everything we had was top notch. Definitely recommended when you feel like Chinese or just a homie meal.
Not very good. One of our meals never arrived. Another made one in our party throw up in the bathroom. Wouldn’t recommend at all.
Ordered fried chicken, sweet sour pork, squid and tofu. Everything was perfect 💯Definitely the most authentic chinese restaurant in Queenstown
It was a great experience. As a Chinese, it was definitely the most authentic Chinese food Ive ever had.Especially the sweet sour chicken fillet and Peking Style Roast Duck.....soooooo yummy..
The price quite pricey and when we came, we were offered green tea which we thought free but however later was charged. We also were not given an itemized bill but instead the only bill with the total amount. Sneaky kind of restaurant.
The itemised bill was showing higher prices than the menu, and they didn’t add up (ie the total was wrong- scroll through the reviews and you’ll find that that was the case for a lot of people. Bunch of scammers. Food was very average.
Worst experience ever! Very rude and mean! Very unfriendly to our family and my baby! Refuse to serve hot water even
The menu is severely overpriced and the portions are small. There were 4 of us. We were told a medium size from their menu would feed 2-3 people. But to be safe we ordered 2 mediums and 1 large dish. The medium egg fu yong tasted average and looked like a regular omelette and could only feed 1 person. The large fried rice was a regular sized portion, just in a large plate, so it wasnt a mountain and was flat. It could only feed 1 person. It was odd seeing someone else ordered a medium fried rice because we noticed that it was a tall mountain on a normal sized plate. However, the fried rice tasted good. The medium beef brisket was fair, a little small but tasted really good. Finally, the service was okay. The waiter told to eat our food or itll get cold. We were waiting for everything to come at once so we could eat them together.Overall we paid $83 for small portions and average tasting food. We left still feeling hungry. There maybe other dishes that do this establishment justice, however, I do not recommend coming here based on our experience.
The people is friendly, but I thonk the food is not taste good for some of people, if you really want to come here for Eating food, I maybe be will suggest you, maybe
Food was cooked perfectly staff were helpful and attentive.
Terrible food and service. They only speak Chinese and absolutely not a good choice for foreigners. Maybe I should say, for everyone. We ordered Sichuan fried bean and hot and spicy lamb which are the very basic Chinese food and they were awful. I think they should close the restaurant and do something else. Here are what we ordered
We saw a lot of tour groups here which should have set alarm bells ringing. Nevertheless, we had sweet and sour pork, spinach and beef with spring onions. All very standard fare that was edible and tasted somewhat like what it should. I didn’t wanted to risk ordering others given the reviews.Air conditioning was busted when we were there. It can get hot if the place is crowded with PRC tourists.
The owner has hidden the food hygiene grade certificate, the food is expensive and not fresh, no wonder the place is quiet at dinner time.
Totally agree with all previous reviews. Food is very ordinary but very expensive, what made it the worst is the terrible service, probably the worst and rudest service I have ever received from a restaurant in Oceania or overseas. Would give zero star if I could, avoid by all means! There were so many lovely surrounding restaurants all packed with people, this was the only one thats completely empty on a busy weekend night and now I know why...
Service was terrible. People who came in after us, ordered after us were served their meals before us. Struggle to get first round of drinks. Forget even trying to order a second round. Asked for special salt for crispy chicken and normal table salt given even though plenty of other dishes came with special salt. When we again asked for special salt were told that was all they had. We were the only non-Asian people in the restaurant and the only table receiving poor service.
Awfully disgusting place, misleading menu, inedible food, questionable hygiene, poorly maintained environment, terrible customer service and unbelievably expensive! Apparently this place is a rip-off and will instantly ruin your stay in Queenstown if you dine here, so travellers please beware!
As a Chinese, the food is absolutely rubbish to me. The Services is just so bad. I would put zero star for this restaurant but google wouldnt let me.
Very basic chinese food, below average service . The business got a health downgrade recently. Nice views to lakefront.
Absolutely shocking. Really bad. Set menu cheap, food okay, no ice cream for dessert (because they didnt have any! Run out and get some from the shop next door!!they cut us up an orange to share!!The manager couldnt work the till, the waitresses were thoroughly miserable, the restaurant was empty when other places were packed. This is a business in a prime position overlooking the lake that is ripe to be taken over by someone who knows what they are doing.
I give this one star because the food wasnt to bad however the service was shocking. We ordered three dishes plus rice, a young man threw two dishes on the table and walked away, we then waited 15 minutes for the rice and third dish which never turned up.. When we told them our dishes were cold she abruptly said "its different culture sorry!" So once the rice turned up we eventually ate.. Very odd way of serving food! This place has no restaurant feeling to it, staff running around with marigolds on and when you ask for assistance it appeared that only one person could attempt very broken English.. Its very apparent this is only set up to cater to Chinese. (Certainly not made welcome)
This is my first ever review and my first ever complaint anywhere in the world in 40+ years. I was at his restaurant twice before, the last time 4 years ago with my children and my parents who were visiting from overseas, we loved it. So on my visit to Queenstown last week, this time with one child and two visitors, I was incredibly disappointed in..actually everything. The restaurant had changed places with the Thai next door, and although not quite as nice a venue, that was ok. There were maybe 4 or 5 other tables occupied. We were greeted by a male waiter in a very unfriendly manner, and very reluctantly shown to a table, at that point I was still not too worried. We were given 3 not 4 menus, again, ok no worries; he then grunted which we took as wanting to take the drinks order, we started ordering those, after 3 orders he turned to walk away, and I had to call out to him, that I would like a drink too please. We had barely time to read the menu when he returned to take the order, again not many words were spoken, and when I said we are not ready to order, he kept standing at the table, glaring at me. So we rushed the order, and managed to order 2 wrong dishes, but never mind. When the food came, it was hugely disappointing, it not only didnt look like any Chinese food Ive ever ordered before, but also tasted quite uninspiring. (I have eaten at Chinese restaurants on many many many occasion here and abroad and lived in Asia for 3 years). There were a couple of other things, which I actually cant be bothered mentioning anymore. The service didnt improve, the food didnt make up for it. If the food had been great, I would not have minded about everything else, but it was not. Hugely disappointed.
