Buzzy and smart Malaysian restaurant with wooden benches, stools, and some shared tables, plus BYO.
Food was good-I had the nasi lemak. Service is now you order and pay your mobile app so the delivery of food is all you can rate.Atmosphere was basic but clean.
Food is great and taste really good. If you like spicy Malay food, definitely worth checking. Once you tried, definitely you’ll get back. 👍🥘
I dont usually write reviews but last night food was just horrendous. We were 12 people table. Me and my partner ordered first and our food arrived in 5 minutes if not earlier. I looks pretty dry, like microwave food. Just terrible. Not going back.I had no issue with the service or anything else. This is just foodwise review.
Their roti curry dip taste like the buffalo sauce you put on chicken wings. The other dip taste like very watery taco bell sauce packets. Fried rice and fried chicken taste almost identical to chinese cuisine.
Foods always great though satay is sometimes too strong on spices. Went today and no anchovies in stock so received nasi lemak with only egg, peanuts & cucumber for same price, no prior notification. Service is temperamental, but mostly fine and prompt. Post Covid, would be helpful if crew remained open to taking orders at tables esp if customers are pregnant, extended families w kids, etc, rather than recite the order spiel and move on.
Great food for lunch and they are busy for a reason. We had a team lunch and it was a nice experience. It is decent price and a solid option. The location is modern and clean.
A favourite for those who craved freshly made Roti Canai (not Frozen!!), vibrant curries, all at an attractive price point.I also appreciate that you can tailor the sweetness level of the Teh Tarik and Teh Halia to your preference.
Its my greatest disappointment to come here just to eat ice cold Rojak and sour prawn sambal with rice. Food has gone way out. Ice kacang was served with just red beans and Jelly topped up with corn . Horrible! Never recommend this place to anyone.
Kari Kambing (lamb curryshould hotter in temperature, it was just warmish, but still great food like in Sydney. When you guys will open a store over west? Bring one to Perth.
The roti dishes here are awesome, especially the buttery one. I initially thought that the red paste is spicy, but it turns out to be shrimp paste (which is great). Only thing is that the portion is quite small. The skewers were great as well, with very delicious sauce. The fried chicken was good, but a bit salty to my taste (But I heard that is Malay/Indo fried chicken taste standard, so maybe that’s alright). 10% off if pay by cash.
If you are craving for Malaysian food or you want to give Malaysian food a try, Mamak is the best place in my humble opinion. Their roti canai, maggi goreng, cendol and teh ais remind me of home but I can’t say the same thing for chicken satay. Don’t get me wrong, the satay is alright but it does not taste so authentic. Overall, there is no doubt that I will visit again whenever I am in Melbourne next time.
So tasty!!!We have never walked away disappointed, it’s a local favorite - reminds me of eating in Malaysia! You can watch the roti being hand made and cooked in the front window, it’s a great show! Then settle in for some very tasty dishes! The fish curry is a favorite, but everything is great. Heads up: no alcohol is served here, but they make some great sweet teas and free bottles of water. They also sell some of the sauce for take away in a jar for you to use at home.
Came here for quick light lunch with family !! Good standard fare for what little we had
Great restaurant for your Malaysian fix.The roti is buttery soft and crispy that goes so well with the curry dips. Highly recommend the slightly spicy curry dip as its the perfect level of spice to cut through the roti. Also ordered the classic Nasi Lemak with an extra piece of chicken. The chicken was big for its size and delicious! Had to also get the green peas to balance out the meal which tasted great with a fresh crunch. Will come again!
So tasty and authentic Malaysian cuisine!Mee Goreng is my favourite. Their roti are all freshly made to order.I have recommended this restaurant to a few friends and they all love it.
Felt quite bad when me and friends were treated differently. (If you know what I mean)There was some empty place infront of the restaurant but we were placed at the corner of the shop- near the kitchen. We could smell the cooking and it was not really pleasant. Kinda isolated. Not sure why was that. Service was horrible- the staff was not friendly. We were craving for some Malaysian food and the mood was just off.- we didn’t wanna waste our money there. - looking for a awesome Malaysian taste food? I’d always recommend RotiBar Melbourne- BEST service and the food won’t disappoint you and the price fits.
Extremely overrated. These guys are the ultimate in stingy. You will get the bare minimum meat in every dish you order. I cannot believe these guys think people wont notice. I ordered Nasi Lemak with curry chicken and they gave me chicken with 90% bone. I also ordered Murtabak with lamb and there was barely any lamb, it was mostly egg!Lift your game guys, people arent silly, we know what youre doing!
I remembered chicken curry at sydney mamak long years ago. I intentionally came to eat same menu at melbourne.
It took 25 minutes to get a plate of Nasi Lemak came with 3 three sambal prawns. The portion is too small for $17 meal. It tasted pretty average. I would not recommend visiting this place.
Delightful experience in Melbourne CBD.All the dishes were hot on arrival, the downside was the wait time for some dishes - Customers who ordered after us received the same dish first.Overall, the spiciness of the chicken was up to standard, and the roti was fresh and crispy.Would recommend this spot on a cold evening for dinner!
Team lunch @MamakMelbourne, plenty of Malaysian dishes to choose from, we shared the following:- Roti planta- Roti Telur (roti filled with egg)- Chicken satay skewers- Mee goreng- Kari Kambin (slow cooked spicy lamb curry)Great to have the variety. I enjoyed the flaky roti which comes with a lentil curry, a curry, and a sambal chilli jam. The chicken skewers are tasty with a good helping of peanut sauce. Cant go past mee goreng, the classic Malaysian noodle dish, and the rice to sop up the lamb curry is delicious.#Malaysianfood #roti #chickensatay #satayskewers #meegoreng #foodie #melbournefood #melbournecbd @zomatomelb
Got nasi goreng ($16and sotong sambal ($22). The nasi goreng was FAR from authentic, they must have added tomato sauce in it - I could taste the tomato flavour in every spoon. Also, they used the frozen mixed carrot, peas, corn and beans veggie packet for the nasi goreng. You are better off making your own nasi goreng/fried rice at home instead of paying a visit here. The sambal sotong was slightly better, a little salty. Overall, it was utterly disappointing. The fact that they could ruin a basic Malaysian/Indonesian dish like nasi goreng says everything about the authenticity of the food here.
Ordered roti tissue (good, a little priceyand iced cendol (the green cendol didnt taste as good as usual).Service is good and quite prompt.
My husband and I are their regular customers, I like the Rotti there, they are so soft and chewy, the fish curry is a must-try dish, they have different yummy dishes with good price
Malaysian food that just seemed off.Had the spicy lamb curry with a milk tea. Felt like there was something off with both of them. They tasted decent, but slightly worse than other curry and milk teas.Food was good value for money at around $15.
Authentic food and very much a guilty pleasure. The food is pretty much exactly what youd want from an Asian canteen / casual restaurant that serves Malaysian food. The curry is somewhat mild and thin compared to other cuisines such as Indian or Japanese curries, which means that you definitely want rice to go with them. The meats were delicious and fresh, and I find that in general they are great value. I also tried the fish curry which was very generous in the portion of fish and I would say probably the best curry Ive had at Mamak. Dessert cone is very interesting if you dont mind getting your hands a bit sticky.
Great price and great service. I went there 5 mins before they were closing their kitchen, but they took my order and it was served hot and it was yummy
Good meal. Few veg options but were good. Wanted to try roti and sambal but its not vegan. Worth money.
Mamak specialises in Malaysian street food served FAST, informal dining, and is a consistent performer. I’ve been eating here and at the sister restaurant in Sydney for years and never disappointed. It’s unbelievable how fast the food arrives. Just for fun, I set my stopwatch today - food hit the table 4:08 after ordering. Crazy efficient. If you’re reading this, Mamak, please add a couple more vegetarian options to your menu. Food is delicious and fresh. Specialities are roti canai and chicken satay skewers. i think only it’s getting a little bit expensive for street food - todays bill was $60 for one vege curry, one serve roti and one serve skewers
This place used to be amazing. Got takeaway last night and it was very average to say the least. Didn’t eat it all. The nasi goreng was very greasy and almost tasteless. The beef skewers used to have a nice charred taste from the grill, they were tasteless too. Very disappointing to say the least. Won’t be returning. (Pics posted are from when Mamak was amazing).
Mamak served Malaysian cuisine in a casual environment. Their menu wasn’t large and I’d been here a few times so I’d tried most of their dishes. My favourites were their nasi lemak and ayam berempah, but I also enjoyed their range of roti. Service was pretty much non-existent but overall very decent and good value.
The smell, it was nice, and you know its Asian. A frozen flower manager, great food and the Roti is heaven. If your looking for a Malaysian food, this is the place.
Amazingly tasty Malaysian food. Well recommended place. One downside is price. It’s a bit on the higher side
Good food with reasonable price. Pay with cash earns some discount 😂.But I like the chicken curries in Roti road than here. Here roti chanai is great.
It was a reasonably good dinner.Food was delicious and good price. Also you can get 10% discount if you pay in cash. Negative point was the loud noise. Kitchen was too noisy while they were cooking and even the people were talking too loud.
Mamak is always a good time! Close to work for a quick dinner. Get the roti and the chicken satay. That sauce is like crack. They actually bottle it and sell it in store. We also have been loving the mee goreng noodles too. It’s really filling and tasty.
Such a great place !Food is absolutely delicious, and always consistent. Been here a few times now, and never been disappointed. The curries are perfect, so much flavour and spice. The roti is amazing!Being able to order from a QR-code and pay at the same time is a great new way of service.Highly recommend this place
Busy Malaysian restaurant. Tasty roti with a variety of dips, satay with delicious peanut sauce. When ordering some dishes they say it will take 20 minutes but comes much quicker. Good variety of noodle and rice dishes. Did not try the desserts.
This has been in our list for a while, as I love Malaysian food, and I am a big fan of Nasi Lemak, Malaysias national dish, we decided to finally visit. This place gets packed very quick, so you’ll have to wait for a while before getting yourself a table.Once we were seated by the friendly staff, we ordered the following:- Nasi Lemak - Fragrant coconut rice accompanied by an ensemble of sambal, peanuts, crispy anchovies, cucumber, and hard-boiled egg. You have the option to add curry chicken/fish/lamb/vegetarian. I opted for the Fish Curry.- Kari ikan - A tangy fish curry cooked with fresh tomatoes, okra, and eggplant.- Ayam goreng - Malaysian-style fried chicken. Marinated with herbs and spices and full of flavour. ($5 per piece)- Nasi goreng - Malaysian-style fried rice with spicy sambal, eggs, prawns, French beans, assorted veggies, topped with fried shallots.Loved the Nasi Lemak! Everything about it is exactly how I had it in Malaysia. The fried chicken was nice & juicy, if a bit oily. The Kari Ikan (fish currywas not as tangy as we expected it. The Nasi Goreng wasn’t served with the traditional fried eggs on top, so it was just a mixture of fried rice with prawns. Didn’t feel traditional. We asked for single rotis, but were surprised that they don’t serve them individually, and you have to order the curry dips and spicy sambal sauce with. It was a real let down, as we just wanted some bread with the curry. At the end of the meal, we ordered the Kopi Tarik (Malaysian white coffee), and asked for no sugar as we know it it’s made with condensed and evaporated milk which is already sweet. Apparently, that is not possible, and it has to come with sugar!!! So even with one spoon of sugar, it was way too sweet for us, and we honestly couldn’t be bothered to drink it.This place has potentials to be better if they are a bit more flexible with stuff that can either not be added or can be purchased as a single item. We are not asking to change the food, just don’t add sugar to the drinks, and charge us for single rotis, similar to the fried chicken.
Awesome Malaysian cuisine you can have in the city! All the dishes are delicious and the customer services are on point! And it’s halal. I highly recommend this place.
just wanna say, “ I LOVE IT “they definitely do better than the other malaysia restaurant out there. the roti definitely taste like what you can get in malaysia. for the price we pay was pretty worth it, but still can’t believe price is higher then the malaysia mamak 😝the Teh taste awesome, the roti telur bawang is pretty oniony and eggy . just like in malaysia. cendol was okay, the portion can be serve for a little bit more
Popular joint and good crowd, food is closest to authentic Malaysian, though there is room for perfection. With that said I do recommend this place for your cravings of Malaysian dishes.
I was worried about foods because I heard so many tourist visiting here. From time to time people good comment even if there got bad experience. When I took foods from here, I was too much worried about it. foods were amazing, reasonable price.I would recommend it to friends or other tourist .
Quick service, staff is friendly and very professional. They already let you know which items on the menu are not available prior to ordering.Food was amazing - totally value for money. I don’t eat spicy and was worried about the Sambal but everything was just perfect. They also took into account allergies and altered the ingredients to cater for that; food was still DELICIOUS without prawns & prawn paste.Toilets were clean. Lots of space in the restaurant.Overall 10/10! Would absolutely recommend and will absolutely eat there again. Could not be more satisfied.
One of the most well known Malaysian establishment which originated from Sydney. We tried the rojak and the nasi Lemak. Both food are well presented but lacking anything special to make us want to come back again. Prices are also on the steeper side compared to the servings.Food - 6Service - 8Vibe - 6Price - $$$
Mamak has a range of good Malaysian food. However, they are a bit lacking in seasonings. Also, the service was slow even though the restaurant was not busy.Overall, it is a good place to grab lunch or dinner, but nothing really stood out that will make me come back for more.
The food at Mamak is stunning! The dishes are presented beautifully and are loaded with flavor. We tried a roti, noodle dish, and a rice dish with fried chicken and goat curry; everything was delicious. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for excellent Malaysian food at great prices.
Good tasting food, quick service and a great spot for lunch.Honestly the currys we had were ok, but the satay chicken is fantastic! I definitely recommend them if you are going here! The only thing would be is that its a pretty cramped but big restaurant, but this isnt a big deal.
pretty good quality for Malay/Mamak styled food, but prices are a little on the upper end for their quantity - its still pretty affordable though, and the taste quality does more than make up for it. the Fish Curry here is definitely highly recommended.
The place to go when you have major Malaysian food cravings. The fried chicken is pretty incredible. The curry and fried rice was enjoyable too. Theyre just a tad pricey but it does come at a substantial portion size. Get the roti bomb for dessert its chewy buttery sweet goodness Id eat 3 portions if I could.
