Maloka Sandoval Lodge - in Tambopata, Peru

Never ever stay in this lodge. They ruined my memory of the Peruvian Amazonas. They lack organization with the reservations. As they dont manage rooms well, they accommodate people in another lodge nearby (Koshiri Eco Lodge), which is the most disgusting place I have ever seen. The quality of the food is terrible. In three days, our meals were based on yuca and rice and the portions were rather small. Basically, we starved for the 3 days of our stay. The staff is sick and tired of dealing with customers complaints they cant solve as its all the managers fault. The manager, Mr Elmer, is despicable, rude and disrespectful with guests. He rejected talking to us when we requested for responsibilities and on top of that, he abandoned us in the lake without notice as he found out we had written a formal complaint in the park. In fact, if you ask in IPeru in Puerto Maldonado, they will show you the endless list of complaints they have been getting in the recent years. DONT LET THESE PEOPLE RUIN YOUR JUNGLE HOLIDAYS.
I came to this lodge in a group of seven, and we had a fantastic experience! The rooms are kind of basic, but exactly what youd look for in this type of retreat. All our beds were clean and had mosquito nets. Not really locks on the doors, but still very safe. There is only electricity in the rooms from 6pm-9pm at night. There are hammocks all over the lot which are perfect for relaxing in the down time.Food was awesome as well! Each meal was different. Most lunch dishes came with a side of rice, some veggies, and meat, and we got a dessert then as well. The dinners started with a soup and followed by similar meals as lunch but no dessert. There was fresh juice and cold water for every meal. One of the girls in our group is vegan, and her meals were packed with veggies and fruits, and were very filling as well! They made a special effort to accommodate her diet, which was awesome. Breakfast was at 8am, lunch at 1pm, and dinner at 7:30pm. (There are pictures of some of the meals below). Our tour guide was Alberto, and he was the best! He took us out on the boat to see wildlife, including caimans, monkeys, river otters, and a variety of birds. We went on some very well guided hikes where we all learned a lot about the plants and wildlife. We even saw macaws on the last morning! Alberto is super knowledgeable about the species living around and in the lake! The rest of the staff was so kind and helpful as well. This is definitely worth the time and effort to get here! We stayed for 3 days and 2 nights. To get here, we took an overnight bus to Puerto Maldonado where a taxi driver met us and drove us to the tour company. From there we had breakfast at a nearby cafe, then were provided another taxi to the dock. We took a 30-45 minute boat ride down the river. After that we hiked for about an hour to Lake Sandoval, then got on another boat for about 30 minutes to our lodge. The travel time is definitely worth it though, so make sure to stay as many days as you can!!PS, bring a swimsuit, bugspray, sunscreen, a hat, and a small water bottle! And sandals during the dry season!
Basic. No lock on the door. Veggie food was just carbs repeated.Lovely setting though and at least there was a mosquito net.
Lugar impresionante. Fauna y paisajes únicos. Deben mejorar urgente las instalaciones. Los guías buenísimos. Música fuerte en los horarios de comida.
Good place to stay. Definitely needs some upgrading, but I believe they were doing some when I was leaving. Good location for tours etc, lots of wildlife nearby. Great food.
I have a good memory of this place. If you like nature and you came here forva true experience of the jungle is an appropriate location and structure. We stayed only one night and washed ourselves in a stream because they were building showers by the time many years ago. We had a personal guide that lived by the lodge very smart good boy Cesar. If you need to stay for long time or need amenities and luxury you will probably need to stay at Sandoval lake lodge. If you are young in search of adventure like camping for few days maybe you will be fine.
Very basic facilities eg cold showers & electricity only for a few hours in the evening. Location was excellent however as long as youre prepared for the long muddy walk from the river.
