Undeveloped sand beach, where shore breaks can be strong, offers swimming, surfing & shore fishing.
Stomping grounds in my hanabada days! Choke good & bad memories here growing up on Maui!
Love this beach. Even on a kind of cloudy day the water was just beautiful. It’s a nice calm beach and not super windy. Because it’s in the state park there is a fee, so it’s not too crowded. Absolutely beautiful!
Beautiful white sand beach, small beach on the right has numerous corals, beautiful
Beautiful beach. Parking is $10 per vehicle and entrance is $5 per person. The beach is prone to various dangers so be prepared to be disappointed. The lifeguards will announce if there is any danger in enjoying the beach. The water was clear and we got a chance to swim with a turtle. Plenty of space to just sit back and relax. One of the best beaches in south Maui.
Big Beach! We had a swell and waves were great for body surfing!
We loved this beach! The waves are slightly bigger than others on this side of the island but nothing to dangerous. As long as you get past the wave break it is peaceful and easy going! Parking fills up quick, and if you don’t want to pay you have to park a long ways down the road because those slots fill up fast. I would just pay to park in the parking lot because it is quite a bit closer
This is a really good beach to come to for swimming, snorkeling and watching the sunset. We came here first thing in the morning one day and we were one of the only ones out there. The waves arent that great for boogie boarding or surfing, but once you pass the break then the snorkeling is good. We loved this beach so much that we came back the next day later in the afternoon to swim and watch the sunset. There werent too many people there at that time either.
Beach is awesome, like the signs say, there is a strong current, so keep an eye on your kids. Parking is limited, it is a pay to park, $10 for the auto and $5 per person. Attendant is there to help with payment on credit card or download the masterpark app and pay by phone. Two life guard stations on the main beach ⛱️. Both are staffed. Great time as we enjoyed. If you go by the rocky outcroppings you can see marine life for snorkeling, we also saw turtles 🐢 and octopuses 🐙Great beach day on an awesome beach.
Beautiful place, giant waves. Red flag alert was on when we were there so we cant even go for a swim or even stay by the shore break because its more dangerous. But its a great place to get a tan! Parking is road side, we got lucky and got a legitimate free parking spot that day.
Beautiful ocean view with soft sand! This is by far the most scenic beach Ive visited.
My favorite beach on the planet! Golden sands, Incredible sunset spot, amazing local surfers, boogie boarders and water acrobats to spend hours watching if you dont want to brave the surf.
Big Beach has always been a family fav since I can remember as a small child visiting Maui. However, you must respect the ocean and its strength. You have to be experienced in reading waves and be a strong swimmer. Has a BIG shore break and is known for creating the most spinal injuries in all of Hawaii. I consider myself a strong swimmer but as I get older I know my limits.Absolutely beautiful beach, blue ocean and some good snorkeling near reefs when it’s not too crazy of a surf.
Beautiful, but the beach was closed due to high surf. Normally the surf isnt this high, but the remnants of Hurricane Darby and the Tahitian swell created record swells. Hope to go back another day because boogie boarding is fun here...but heed the warnings.
beautiful beach, but the waves are like "tsunamis".. like my daughter said. we have to leave after 10 minutes, because the kids are not allowed to go to the water. the place is good for Surfers
The beach is some of the nicest sand, in our opinion, in Maui. The neighbourhood you pass through is beautiful and opens up to this wonderful beach that wasnt too crowded. The beach did not have many spots for shade and the waves were pretty aggressive but if you come prepared this place will not disappoint!
One of my favorite beaches! But can be very dangerous shore break waves. Be Careful
Beautiful beach with stunning views. Also the #1 beach for spinal injuries. The shore break is crazy and rather dangerous. As a pregnant woman, I couldn’t risk going in to deep so I appreciated the beauty from the sand.
Pretty beach, but dangerous to swim in so be cautious if you attempt to go into the water. We did enjoy watching the waves come in.
Wow the waves here are incredible! It is quite a show even from the sand! If you plan on goi g in the water, pay attention to the lifeguards warnings! If you have young children or are not a strong swimmer you may want to try a different beach!
Nice bike ride ,but if you drive be prepared to pay for parking.
I visited Makena Little Beach, and I loved it! It was such a pretty beach. Of the beaches in Maui I visited, this one had the biggest waves. The sand was sooo soft as well! The rocks lining the beach were amazing, I took some amazing pictures of them and as a background for family pictures. Over all, I would highly recommend visiting Makena State Park and its beaches!!For food, although it is a ways out of town, there were some food trucks to eat at.For parking, there is a parking fee per person and hour. I cant remember what the pricing is, but there is one.
Absolutely breathtaking. You have Big Beach on east side . Little Beach on west side ( clothing optional).
Very nice soft sandy beach. Fun large waves. Active Life gaurd was on duty until 5pm and lifeguard announced good warnings of the dangers of the beach every hour.
Very windy beach. Dangerous surf and shore breaks!! There are about 2-3 lifeguards posted here and occasionally will have to announce the dangerous conditions. After about 30 minutes of the wind, hot sun and surf conditions we left. Also very few shady spots to lay out.
Super nice beach. Clear water, nice Sandy. Very little lava rocks compared to close by beaches. Family friendly.
Gorgeous beach with lots of waves to get crazy in and body board. Lifeguards around during the day. Couple different entrances parking can be crazy. Great views at sunset!
Made a couple hour trip to Mākena Park and it was well worth it. There is paid parking or you can try to park on the side of the road. The water here is a beautiful blue but the waves can get a little crazy so you just need to be safe. Highly recommend coming to this park!
Absolutely gorgeous beach. Gold sand, blue crystal clear sea, amazing waves. All you need in one place. For me the top beach in Maui.
This is a beautiful beach park. There are no chair or umbrella rentals and shade is limited. The scenery is amazing! The water is great.
Beautiful secluded beach, the waves are huge and is perfect for surfing. Sand is really soft. Perfect for spending a day out at the beach!
This is easily one of Maui’s most scenic natural feeling beaches. Burning hot white sand is hemmed in by volcanic cliffs amid shore breaking waves. Follow the road past Wailea as it worsens and narrows noticeably. Turn right into the first of several pay parking lots. Just past the “shave ice” stand(sthis hidden beach is accessed by a path sheltered by Maui’s natural indigenous trees. A worthy piece of advice? Don’t boogie board here unless you wear a neck brace or hate your dentist. Getting slammed is all too easy. Bring a lawn chair and ample (“ample”sun prophylactics along with plenty of liquids. The aqua marine/turquoise water should not be missed. This is not a reefed beach but a scenic one- you’ll find some brightly coloured fish and small corals. If you arrive early, the wind and surf are noticeably milder. A life guard station was added in recent years…. Continuing further down the road brings you to an exposed single lane road with great views and pricey homes. The last real stop is a 600 year old lava field some 10-15 min past Makena.
The sand is soft and smooth. There are not many rocks at the bottom so snorkeling is possible but no fishes. The waves can be quite strong. There are portable toilets but no beach showers.
Big beach is big. The waves are big. If you dont know what youre doing dont go in the water. Keep and eye or better yet stay right with your kids. People can easily get hurt in surf like this beach has. Lots of sandy beach for playing in the sand relaxing or just people watching. This beach does have lifeguards so respect them and do what they say. They are there to keep everyone safe: dont make their job harder by not respecting the power of the ocean at this beach.Barbra the parking attendant is super kind and helpful.
We loved this beach. Easy access parking, paid online, lifeguard, swimmer friendly beach and sand. Mahalo 🤙
Beautiful sandy beach, lots of shade, They are restrooms too. Best to go before 10 am, to find parking. There is a secluded lagoon where the big rocks are around the middle of the beach, it is covered in coral pieces! They are restrooms too.
Big beach is a must see when visiting Maui. Be sure to bring an umbrella as theres not too many spots to find shade. The shore break in the summer is fun but dangerous. Winter tends to be best for playing in the safer smaller surf.
Usually pretty windy and waves break too late making it hard to body surf. Beautiful beach though.
Beautiful Big Beach! Stunning views and many whales were putting on a show
Wow...cloudy over Makena Beach today but the whale action was incredible!! Saw several full breaches, more blow spouts than I could count and lots of other shenanigans. If you want to see whales so close to shore you do not need binoculars this is a great place to experience it.
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!! This beach is amazing:lots of beach to relax, surf, play. The views are incredible, especially at sunset
Easily, one of my favorite beaches on the island. When you visit Big Beach youll understand why. Be careful, check with lifeguard on daily conditions, respect and enjoy! One of the many reasons were lucky we live Hawaii. 🤙✌
Nice warm sandy beach in the shadow of a mini dormant cinder cone volcano and a nice view of the Island of Kahoʻolawe on the horizon. Pretty cool to check out the lava rocks on both the northern and southern ends of the Big Beach. There were some fish beneath the waves, but most of them were near the reefs by the rocks, which you should be careful not to swim too close, don’t want the waves hurting you. Waves were pretty large and choppy in the afternoon, maybe it’s just the day I went. The beach had portable toilets, but not any shower facilities that I saw, but did bring along some tap water to clean off before getting in the car. Also, there is a parking fee.
Beach is gorgeous. Super windy in the afternoon. The signage for parking wasn’t super clear but once you use the machine it’s simple. $5/person.No lifeguard when we were there around 3pm.Not too crowded and plenty of parking spots 11/5.Choppy water when the wind picked up. Sand blowing and umbrellas flying as well.
Beautiful beach park, not too busy during the week, nice sand and no big rocks in the water! Only down side is no wash station to wash the sand off after the beach! Parking is a $10 flat rate
Paid parking available that leads onto the beach. Plenty of space along the long beach to settle in and have a great view of the sunset. The surf was a little too strong for me to feel comfortable swimming but I saw plenty of people/ groups having fun in the water -- either way, the view and sound of the waves was fun to enjoy 👍🏼
I went to Makena Beach in August 2021, around 11am and found that parking was available and beach was not too crowded. You have to pay for parking at a meter. There was a lifeguard station but I don’t believe seeing anyone there. I don’t believe I spotted any public facilities like a shower or bathroom. However, the beach was truly beautiful. Pics do not do justice to how blue-green the water was. Be careful though!! The shore break here can be very dangerous and the waves are deceptively strong. I think I read somewhere that they also call this breakneck beach. I believe it. I got wiped out by a seeming harmless wave as I was taken by a strong undercurrent. I recommend swimming here for strong swimmers and - while it seems obvious to say - never turn your back on the ocean! There are also some food trucks on the road alongside Makena Beach. Didn’t get to try any of them but they looked good.I will go back to this beach next time I’m on Maui. Aloha!
We entered the northern most entrance. The walk was fairly short and the portable toilets were accessible and as well maintains as beach toilets can be.We made our way to Tiny Beach, full of comfortable body positivity 😉 Be aware of what youre walking into before climbing the hill. The waves can be treacherous so watch the surf and only go in if you can handle it. Nobody wants to be rescued as a nude swimmer.
Perfectly fine, active beach for adults. (And if you go to the clothing-optional Little Beach, for adults-only But the surf is too strong for kids. My 70-pounder was getting thrashed around like a wet rag. The $15 parking is a tad excessive IMHO.
Beautiful beaches, perhaps the nicest in all of Maui. There’s also a nude section for those interested, just climb over the rocks at the right edge (when enteringand lose your sense of inhibition! The water is pristine and the sand so fine to stroll through.Absolutely worth a visit, even if staying in Lahaina.
Very beautiful and spacious beach. Nice snorkeling and skim boarding. Only negative thing is that there was too much people. And you need to pay for parking. But good overall!
