Main building of the Polycentric Museum of Aigai - Archaeological museum in Katerini, Greece
Anyone interested in Ancient Macedonia will find these tombs fascinating. The tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, is the main attraction. The grave goods and structures of the burial places have been expertly preserved and aesthetically displaed. Worth a side trip.
Amazing place to visit. One of the best ancient sites, beautifully presented. A must do.
Possibly the most magnificent collection of artefacts Ive ever seen, rivalling Tutankhamun etc. The display of the contents of Philip of Macedons tomb is unmissable.
A fascinating museum built into the tomb area, with the highlights being the intact tomb of Phillip the II of Macedon. Some of the artefacts are outstanding. The atmosphere of museum is excellent, being built at location. The film area near the end is extremely dusty, I could taste it after a few minutes. They need to sort that bit out. Still, very minor gripe.
VERY interesting place.
Beautiful place, a museum but also the actual graves/tombs are there in an underground place.
A reminder to live your life. Otherwise put, IOLO. But in a good way 🙂. The artifacts are impressive.
A terrific museum which is an absolute must-see for all visitors. Very well organized and the displays are described in detail.
A truly beautiful Museum, we should consider ourselves very lucky that the Tombs havent been raided before their discovery.
Very well kept and impressive display of historical artifacts.I recommend visiting with a tour guide to get the full experience. Just make sure that the guide speaks proper English 🙃
It was dark as night, so frequently bumping against other visitors was awful. The tombs of Philip II and the other tombs were bereft of their natural surroundings.
Amazing items, excellent presentation, well organized, polite personnel. It really drags you into history. I had a good impression when I visited the museum a decade ago. But now it is even better.
Great place for history lovers of the ancient Greek heritage! It is an underground museum containing the burial clusters of Philip II of Macedonia and Great Alexanders son, known as Prince of Macedonia! He was the son of Alexander the Great and Roxane died at the age of 13-14.
One of the best museums Ive ever seen. The idea to enclose the tumbs inside a modern building its simply brilliant.
I thought the museum was very interesting, but I don’t know if I’d go out of the way for it again. The tombs were impressive and the history was interesting, but I didn’t think the information was presented very well..for example there were no drawings of how the tombs would have looked inside, just paragraphs of text describing it. Difficult to digest the info in this format.
What a perfect place to visit and learn more about Philip and their dynasty. All adults and children loved it. Looking forward to visiting the new Vergina AIGAI museum, when it opens.
Not even in Spielbergs movies you see the wealth, beauty and history that you see here. Simply unbelievable. Especially to those who thought that they could find these artifacts only in the Athenian civilization. One last thing: every name or phrase or scripture was written in Greek. I am not an historian, but these people were Greeks. Cheers and yeah mas.
The tombs were big, very cool!
If you have never been to Vergina before you dont know by the signage that this is the only place you have to visit, if you dont have the whole day to visit the vast archaeological site. The museum is absolutely amazing: it is constructed over 3 royal tombs and 1 temple, offering valuable shade during the summer. Museological design clear, its clear where you are going next, the antiquities are demonstrated in awesome way, well lighted and with neat descriptions. There are no words for the masterful antiquities themselves except that they are what is left from the birthplace of the great civilization of ancient Macedonia. They offer a small glimpse on Alexander the Great and what his background was.
This is a world heritage monument which should be visited by everyone to see the ancient Macedonians prosperity and understand that Ancient Macedonians were Greeks. Photos are allowed without flash.
Wonderful collection of priceless artifacts preserved since the days of Alexander The Great, including the royal tombs of Alexanders father (Philipp IIand son (Alexander IV). Highly recommended!
The idea of keeping all archaeological treasures on-site in a tumulus-like building is brilliant! You really feel the context of the tombs. Also it seems more ethical to display like this, and not behave like grave robbers. Absolutely awesome.
The most amazing archaeological findings I have ever seen! Everyone should visit once in lifetime!!!
Magnificent exhibition of the museum itself, definitely worth visiting. The other exhibitions are a little not well presented - there are boards with scientific info, but no decent signs to orientate from where to enter, where to start, where is the Ancient Theater. Even worse, it was hard to find the site by using Google navigation. It was a complete mess and only the signs in the village of Vergina helped
We had an amazing paid guide, Gina throughout our tour. Her passion and explanation (in Englishof the Royal Tomb site including all the relics brought everything we saw to life. It was at one point an emotional experience. Very worth visiting!
One of the best museums in the world. Absolutely amazing, with treasures impossible to estimate. But what You can see outside the fence is terrifying, almost everywhere homeless dogs, adult and puppies, most od them starved, many times almost to death. Many of them also ill, with no help, no food and of course with no water. And all Greeks with no heart for them (its no problem to give bowl of water...). So the trip to Vergina was one of my most sad and painfull experience. If You drive Your own car take same extra food! Near Kolouras at od. Koulouras-Melikis from the side of Aliakmon river there are at least 4 big beautiful dogs, 2 of them I think twins, 1 cuddly but thery ill testicles, all to adopt. And so many, many more, even just 100 meters from museum. And Greeks are just watching, and even sometimes are rude and agressive for these poor dogs... What have You Greeks become as a nation, as a society???
A must see if youre in the area. Well designed display of the tombs and their contents. Nice and cool with a serene atmosphere.
An amazing historical and archeological place with many old treasures. The visit will take you about an hour. A guide is recommended. The stories behind the treasures are very interesting. You will be amazed of what is there.
A lifetime experience. Must not leave Greece having not visited this astounding museum centered on the royal burials of ancient Macedon. Just dont be a dope and go there without checking hours... info broadly available on web. 8am-8pm in summer hours.
I dont know all the limitations or costs in terms of preservation, but a bit more light in the exhibition area would be nice. A way to look into at least one of the chambers would be nice too.For the things seen I fellt it was a bit expensive.Be aware that the other sights in the city are free, however currently most of them are closed.
This museum is absolutely fantastic. The showcast of the findings and the graves itself are stunning. Absolutely worth a visit (and the 12€ entrance)!
Beautifully preserved tombs of Philip II and Alexander IV. The father and young son of Alexander the Great. The tombs had been untouched, so you can see how the ancient Macedonians cared for their dead elites.
Great exibition. The museum is underground and is build around the tombs. Artifacts mainly are from the tombs. The inside is dark but very pleasant.
Burial grounds of the father of Alexander the Great and other Kings. Well preserved, worth visiting if you are in the area.
The tombs themselves are amazing! Only reason for dropping a star is it is confusing what is and isnt open, most things are closed, and €12 a person is a bit steep when most things are closed. But the exhibit is really well put together and still a must see. We went just out of season amd the place was intermittently busy and quiet.
If you want to learn more about the ancient history and especially for Macedonia then you should definitely visit The Museum of the Royal Tombs in Vergina (Greece). You will be able to see the tomp of Kind Philip Greats Alexander father. Also thousands of ancient artifacts which are well maintained for more than 2300 years
What a fantastic experience in vergina. Definitely a must do in Greece. You get to see the tomb of Phillip the 2nd (Alexander the Greats father). Absolutely amazing
Totally unexpected! Must see in Greek Macedonia!
This place is full of wonderful treasures with real tombs and ancient armor worn by great warriors. The tour guide had an amazing way of talking about the stuff all around us that you would get really immersed and feel as if you where there inside the story. The museum is beatifully built and the representation of the items inside the tomb where very clear. Its nothing compared to the regular museums you probably have been. I wont spoil much, you need to see it with your own eyes!
If you are anywhere in the region of Macedonia, you should definitely pay a visit to this gorgeous museum in Vergina. Some of the items are extremely well preserved, you can find some of the original tombs as they were found and also the tomb of Philip, the father of Alexander the Great. This is definitely an experience of a lifetime, a must see.
In this area was the old capital of the ancient Macedonian state, AIGES. Here are the Palaces, the ancient theater and the Royal Tombs. The Tomb of Philip, father of Alexander the Great, with its unique findings (golden shrine, urn, wreaths, shield, etc.), which are elements of global radiation. The area of the Royal Tombs with its roofs, is particularly imposing for the visitor. I consider it one of the most important museums in Greece with amazing findings that take the visitors breath away. Those of you in the wider area should visit it. At least Macedonia is one and the same Greek.
You should expect a bit wait during peak covid time but the wait is worthy once seeing the splendid ancient finds by one of most famous storied family, preserved so well, as showing in my photos.
Very interesting museum. There is a free entrance for EU citizens under 25 yo.
Absolutely spectacular site! The museum is inside the tomb complex, displaying the items found in the tombs. There are explanatory signs in both Greek and English, and helpful staff in attendance as well. This is a must-see destination!
An amazing museum built around the graves of Philip II and his family. Beautifully laid out and full of incredible treasures.
Be careful for the public parking in Vergina, we went to visit the museum for 1 hour, and during this time somebody broke the window of the car and stole our luggage! And police told us is not for first time
What an amazing place! The tombs are actually inside the museum. The exhibits from the Tomb of Philip II are incredible to see. The information about the tombs and exhibits is in Greek and English. The staff were helpful. A must see if you are in Greece. The Royal Palace is currently closed for restoration and the Theatre is not open at weekends.
I am giving this attraction one star because of the mask police. The staff in the museum are like stasis following your every step in case you take your mask off. I was quietly reading descriptions on my own, hardly anyone around, I was approached by staff asking to out the mask on over my nose. I was there on my own no one around. Everywhere you go they follow you and remind you about the mask even though you are there pretty much on your own in a big open space. Also entrance fee is €12, well overpriced for 10 minute in and out. Nevertheless golden artefacts are beautiful, but unfriendly staff made our experience awful.
The first visit was held in February 2014. I felt there were a few gaps in the historical events of the season. So, I re-visited it in July 2019 on the occasion of holidaying in Macedonia . I read about the history of the Macedonians from the 8th century until the successors of Alexander the Great, I saw the film by Oliver Stone, etc. What ecstasy did I feel that in the museum were "living" and "realistically" all the elements that created Western civilization. It is a museum that serves exclusively the purpose for which it was created, that is, the place that was buried by Philip II with all the religious rituals of the time. It is simple, robust, honest, and therefore teaches the "measure" that was the basis of Greek culture. When visiting it, please respect the place and dont take photos (in the museum).
One of the most beautiful museums of northern Greece.Ticket costs 12€ and it is worth every penny! We were amazed with findings and also the history that accompanies each and everyone for them!Beware, photos are totally forbidden:(Located in the small town of Vergina, with nice houses, full with flowers and tall trees, like wallnut and cheery trees.Surrounded by taverns and coffee shops and souvenir shops, filled with local delicacies and products of neighbouring areas.
